Model X Canada part 1

  • Jun 3, 2016
    yz778
Hi all, I'm new to the TMC Forums. I just took delivery of my Model X Signature P90D today (VIN ending 602).

I took delivery from the new store at West 4th in Vancouver. They brought me in to do paperwork, and then took me to the garage where the car was waiting with a little sign next to it with my name. Signature holders get an additional gift (spoiler alert: it's a paper weight in the shape of the Model X).

    Initial impressions:
    • It's powerful, this thing just pulls. Took it up Burnaby mountain and there is no shortage of power :)
    • It's silent, feels weird to go so fast with no noise.
    • The regenerative breaking is great, I hardly touch the brakes.
    • The windows do a pretty good job of keeping out the sun/heat.
    • Those falcon wing doors are pretty neat, but now my kids have no cup holders on the doors.
    • Still struggling to figure out the keyfob, half the time the wrong doors open LOL.
    • Noticing some glitches. My wife's iPhone 6s won't play music through Bluetooth, for instance
I'll be updating this thread with things I discover about the car, feel free to send me questions!

Here are some pictures and videos that I took, they are on my instgram feed:

Congrats!! Would love it if you could put this into ModelXTracker.com. Also put a note on your Instragram account about Electafest and BC Club. Would love a show an tell for the club and Electafest is looking for a Model X (it'll be the star of the show I'm sure). PM me for details if you can help or are interested.

Thanks SMSMD and SSD420! How do I change my profile picture,

So here we go, day 2 with the Model X - my impressions so far.

    The good:
    • THIS THING IS SO FREAKING POWERFUL
I love the acceleration in this. From a dead stop, just flooring it to hit 50kmph is such an awesome feeling. Since I don't want to get it impounded right away, I do obey the speed limits. We don't have many places to go fast in Vancouver, so I've been going up hills and just love how this keeps pulling and pulling and pulling. Gobs of torque from 0 to let's not go to jail.

    • Roomy for passengers
Had the car loaded up with 5 guys, 3 were 6ft+, and everyone fit comfortably. When I was powering up Burnaby mountain, they were in the car squealing like little kids and expletives were thrown about freely. 5 grown men going uphill could not slow it down, this thing is a beast. Also took the wives up for a spin, in general, they were probably more giddy than the men with the rollercoaster-like acceleration. Oh right, it's plenty roomy for passengers.

    • It drives like a normal car
It looks and feels very ordinary. Until you mash the accelerator or toss it around like you're going around pylons. This car is on rails and you kinda think to yourself that it has no right to be this big and this fast :) But, driven normally it doesn't attract too much attention. It's not overly showy, which is perfect for me. Well, until you open the falcon wing doors and then you do get a lot of attention.

    • It's electric
It's silent, it's fast, it charges in my garage like my phone. I woke up this AM and pulled up my phone to check on it, fully charged with 412KM of range. Neat! I'm sure I'll save money on gas, but it will never make up for the price of this thing. Besides, I don't drive much as I commute to and from work by bike or my electric scooter
    The bad:
    • It's deceivingly big
Before the Model X, my family car was a 2006 Honda Pilot. The Model X is actually longer than the Pilot and takes up more room in my garage. BTW: the Pilot was a fantastic car, and if that was available fully electric like a TESLA I'd get that in a heartbeat.

    • It's a fingerprint magnet
Why is everything glossy? The door handles have fingerprints all over them, and the interior trim and screen will be covered in oily fingerprints soon I'm sure. I'd prefer material that held up better after daily use, esp since I'm carrying kids around.

    • Key fob, not sure about it
The keyfob is a bit too futuristic for me. I like to know what I'm pressing, and it took reading the manual to what and where to press. I'm sure over time I'll get used to it, but I'd chalk this up to fashion over function -- cool, but needlessly complex. Also, the key fob doesn't open the driver or passenger door -- why is that?? Also, I had to turn off the feature where the driver door opens when you walk up to it. It kept opening and closing in my garage and was spanking me as I was reaching in to get something. Sensors and the computer code need some tuning.

    • Falcon wing doors
They are cool to look at, but not practical. My kids like to sit together, and in my Pilot (and any other car with normal doors) they could put their drinks in cup holders on the door. Since the doors go up, you can't really put anything there so lots of "wasted" space. There are 2 cup holders in the middle, but that would mean the kid that sits in the middle has to keep their legs in an uncomfortable position. Also, my parents are thoroughly confused as to how the doors work and pretty sure as it was opening it nearly clocked them in the face. Cool, but I'd be happy with doors that opened like doors.
The negatives are just complaints that maybe TESLA will take into account for future. I wouldn't trade my Model X for anything :) That's all the time I have for now, still have many more thoughts. It's time to go driving :) Happy weekend eveyone!

I don't think any of us have but I was told that my 90D goes into production this coming week.

I believe I was told that some of the Toronto Sigs are finished production, and are currently waiting in limbo to be moved to Toronto for deliveries

I just learned about the checklist today and will go over it. When I took delivery, we didn't go over much of the car with the TESLA rep. I signed a bunch of papers and handed over a draft. I had to leave to go somewhere else so I didn't spend much time at the store.

Also, regarding insurance. I was asked if I had an insurance agent, so I asked my friend to come do that part. After my Roadstar 43% discount, I'm paying just over $2600 for leisure use w/ $3M liability. All other coverage I think was pretty standard. I think I will splurge and get vanity plates :)

    yz778
Thanks @xkwizit! Sounds like quite the road trip, are you planning your route along where the superchargers are? The service center is at the new location on West 4th. Yesterday was opening day, but I did get a glance inside and all the service bays were set up and ready to go. They don't have a car wash on premise, so I think they will be figuring out how to detail new deliveries. My rep told me they didn't do the full detail job on my delivery, so I can bring it back next time to get a proper detailing.

Sharing a few more thoughts on the Model X before heading to bed.

    Drive settings:
    • Steering in Sport mode, makes steering wheel heavier to go with a heavy car
    • Creep mode is turned off, so the car behaves as if it's in neutral when you're not moving
Took a scenic drive to Cypress Mountain via Lions Gate Bridge. Traffic was crawling, but with my drive settings it wasn't too bad. Once I got onto the bridge, it was a fun and spirited drive.

The ascent is in the X is amazing. There's more torque than you need, press down on your right foot do go fast. It hugs the corners, really enjoyed the hairpin turns.

The descent is even more amazing. I maybe used my brakes twice while coming down from Cypress. The regenerative braking alone was enough to slow the X to a near full stop. Brakes will last a long time at this rate.

    Falcon Wing Doors
Kids have it figured out, they like to open and close their own doors. It's cool and makes the Model X unique. Now for the bad parts, I've counted at least two situations where this hit me on its way down. It didn't hurt but I can imagine I'll see similar comments. I'm also worried how this will do in low clearance areas, will head to the mall to figure that out tomorrow. So, as per my last post - I am not impressed witth the doors.

    Great information, thanks!

Have you tried autopilot yet? I'm curious how well it will work crawling through traffic downtown and waiting in the Lions Gate line-ups. If you ever head up to Whistler or out on the Coquihalla, please let us know what your range is like. Cheers!
  • Jun 5, 2016
    yz778
Hi @Porfiry, I have not tried autopilot -- not sure how to use it yet, still going through the manual :) I did try the Summon feature and backed it out of my garage. It's like driving an RC car -- the phone app only gives options to go forward or reverse.

Will let you know how it goes when I do try and take some videos the next time I'm able to take a longer drive. Itching to try out the supercharger stations in Squamish and Hope. I don't think I'll get the 400KM range though, I have a bit of a heavy foot :)

Day 3 with the Model X.

    Summon
Tried Summon mode this morning to take the car out of my garage. Installed the TESLA phone app and logged in. My car was already registered, I'm guessing because it's tied to my TESLA account.

In Summon mode, I can make the car go forward or reverse. It's like an RC car that only goes forward and backwards really really slowly. At least that is all I was able to do. I could see using this if I had to park the car in a tight spot and get it back out? Otherwise, it doesn't do much right now.

    Falcon Wing Doors
Really not sure about these. I've been hit twice by them now as they were coming down. Actually I've been hit by the trunk lid coming down too so maybe it's just me being clumsy LOL. Seriously, these things are not idiot proof but this isn't a mass market vehicle so buyer beware. And passenger beware. And anyone nearby beware, these doors move by themselves!

    Drive Settings
I turned off Creep mode, turned on Range mode - will post a photo on my Instagram account with the settings screen. I absolutely love the fact that I rarely have to use the brakes. I highly recommend turning off Creep mode. It's like having your regular car in neutral, which I like to do in my stick shift Mini.

    EV Charging
Went to Oakridge to eat at the food court and used the TESLA chargers. It's the wall charger, not a supercharger but it's so convenient because you get a prime parking spot while you charge. Also found free charging / parking at Granville Island. There are 2 Chargepoint EV charging spots outside Edible Canada Bistro. I can get used to this special treatment :)

Heading out to enjoy the beautiful weather. Let me know if you have any questions or anything you want me to test.
  • Jun 5, 2016
    goneskiian
Just be courteous of other EV owners who need the charge more than you do. Plug it in or don't park there at all if you really don't need the juice.
  • Jun 5, 2016
    Martin VanB
Very True. It's pretty harsh needing a charge and not finding an open spot.
  • Jun 6, 2016
    yz778
@goneskiian @Martin VanB good point. Hope the charging infrastructure improves as EV adoption increases.

Existing owners, do you avoid parking spots that are charge stations unless you need them? What about TESLA charge stations parking spots? As I'm new to all this, would like to get other view points. Is there a mechanism for EV owners to reserve spots if they are running low, or some way to notify others that someone with a more urgent need is going to be in the area? What's the proper etiquette?

    End of day 3 updates.

    Underground Parking
The Falcon Wing Doors will work in underground parking. I found a spot that had a beam running across and was lower than other areas and the doors stopped short of hitting the ceiling. There's actually quite a bit of room to spare, good to know I won't need to worry about indoor parking. You can see it in action on my Instagram feed:
Instagram video by @yz778 Jun 5, 2016 at 5:32pm UTC

    Bike Racks
I purchased the towing upgrade, which gives the 2" hitch receiver. I was surprised to learn that I had to install this myself! It's a bit of a pain, you have to go on your back to install it. Took me awhile to figure out how to do this. TIP: read the manual and follow the instructions carefully. It works, and I carried 4 bikes on the rack, and 1 foldable bike went into the rear trunk. The hitch is a Swagman 4 bike carrier. Here's what it looks like after I got everything installed:

Another thing, birds love pooping on this car. I had to spray it with a hose when I got home - there was some nasty bird poop on the top of my Model X.

There is never a proper time to park like this.

In my youth, I had a "friend" (I use this term lightly) who parked like this over 3 spots in a school parking lot at 2am.. Less than an hour he was arrested (for an unrelated matter) but it was his shitty parking job that alerted the cops that something weird was up.

    Don't park like a jackass!
  • Jun 6, 2016
    yz778
Was that photo really of someone who left their car like that to charge? It looks more like someone doing that to take a picture and the Internet went crazy without context. There is a lot of red and white in that picture, it looks too perfect to be a real park job. I can't imagine someone would actually do that and think it's OK.
  • Jun 6, 2016
    yz778
    Thoughts on the touchscreen.

    Physical Buttons (lack of)
I was really worried about not physical buttons to operate the car, and how that would be distracting when driving. The fan controls are always on screen at the bottom and are pretty easy to operate. You can also control a few things on the steering wheel with the controls (left controls music, right controls can operate temperature, fan speed, etc.). I still prefer having real buttons to push, but this hasn't been the terrible experience I was worried about.

    Fingerprints
I hate fingerprints showing up on things, but what do you expect this is a giant iPad. TESLA has been thoughtful enough to include a little cloth for you to wipe it down.

    Browser
Don't fiddle with it while you're driving, distracted driving can get someone hurt. It's OK to use it while parked - but.. not that you'd want to. It's slow, disappointingly slow. For this price, I'd expect the performance and features I'd find in a modern day tablet browser. It's no Chrome or Safari. I can't see anyone using this seriously, you'll always have your phone with you to do browsing. If there was a way to hook up video to this or some screen mirroring through the TESLA app, this would be awesome.

Hopefully the hardware is upgradable because I feel the CPU could use a speed bump already :)

As I don't have my 90X yet, I was expecting the transfer speeds to be LTE speeds like my iPhone 6? Is this not the case or is it simply very variable depending on location?
  • Jun 6, 2016
    Porfiry
That's a pretty unforgiving attitude. I think it's an entirely reasonable way to park IF there are other stalls open and IF the owner remains nearby to move in case things get busy.

Tesla has built back-in charging stations with extremely short cables. Tesla is building cars with hitches and actively promotes the use of hitch racks. This parking job is the obvious consequence of these two incompatible actions by Tesla.

Maybe (for this supercharger configuration) we should leave the farthest right stall (when facing superchargers) open for people towing or with bike racks. That way, they would at most take up 1 extra spot and a bunch of regular parking spots. I guess that would be the opposite of getting ICEd.
  • Jun 6, 2016
    Porfiry
Huh? It's the way he had to park to get plugged in that's the issue. Tesla should have anticipated this problem.

    From my DS:

Everything still on track. Your Model X is in production and has begun the painting process. I think we should still be good for June delivery. I cant be more exact until the vehicle has been loaded for shipping.

I'm with @Porfiry on this one. As a cyclist, if I'm traveling with a full rack full of bikes I will be blocking spots too until and unless Tesla makes concessions for those of us with hitch mount racks that don't allow us to get closer to the short cabled Superchargers.

No, I won't leave the car, or if I do I'll be sure it's somewhere I can see it so if folks need it I'll be able to move it promptly.

Those S and X owners mad at the drive should instead be pressuring Tesla to make changes to the Supercharger installations.
  • Jun 7, 2016
    yz778
Not sure how long the supercharger station cords are, but the wall charger cords are not long enough to run to the charge port unless the car is backed in. That presents a problem, because it's hard to back into a spot carrying bikes. If the cords were longer, a lot of the problem could be resolved, I think.

Side note: I attached my Swagman 4 bike carrier to my Model X over the weekend, and visibility is pretty bad out back. Photo here. I drive with the rear view camera on, but the way it's angled I can't see the last bike. May end up mounting a remote camera on top of the spoiler just for peace of mind when driving.

More thoughts now that I've had a few more days with the Model X.

    Falcon Wing Doors
    • These attract a lot of attention! People get a real kick out of watching it open and close.
    • Not sure if there is a manual way to open the Falcon Wing Doors, have not looked into it.
    • Really need sensors on the underside, it will hit you if you're under it when it comes down. My kids have closed the door on me a few times, so it does happen - be careful!
    Wishlist
    • Touchscreen: It would be awesome if there was a "screen mirror" mode, to mirror my phone screen in a portion of the touchscreen. Perhaps this could be a function of the Tesla phone app?

    • Voice Recognition: Not sure what commands are available, but if it connected to Siri or Google Now that would be amazing. Since I use Android, I'd love to hold down the voice recognition button then say "Ok Google, find me a restaurant nearby" and have my Google Maps popup directions.

    • Side Mirrors: I drove a Prius that tilted the passenger side mirror down to see the road when making a right turn. Would be awesome if Tesla did the same thing as it would make it easier to judge the distance from the curb. Would also be nice if it had indicators on the side mirrors to show there were people in my blindspot

    • Cameras: wish there was a front facing camera, and maybe side cameras. It'd really help when I'm parking. I'm paranoid about curbing my wheels so it'd be awesome if there were cameras that showed those angles. Also a camera showing the underside of the car would be cool too so that I can go to the lowest suspension setting and make sure I don't scrape :D

    • Google Map: the map is great, and the night mode is cool. A few things to make it even better:
      • remember my zoom level
      • when approaching a turn, zoom in the map to show the turn
      • give other voice options
    Annoyances
    • Phone: the microphone is pretty quiet. I'm practically yelling for people to hear me. Don't see any options to increase mic sensitivity.

    • Slacker Radio: need more caching on Slacker Radio, a few times the music stopped after the song played when I stayed in an area with no cell/wifi coverage. Would also like to see more Internet radio choices, like Spotify and Google Music for instance

    • Tesla app: connecting to the car is really slow, I'm probably waiting 30 seconds to a minute for it to connect.

    • Trailer Hitch Attachment: the trailer hitch attachment sticks out of the car probably 15cm, so watch out as you walk around the back. I suppose this is an extra buffer in case someone rear ends you, you'll really stick it to them :). But the real problem is that with the hitch installed, there is an exposed part of your car where dirt and water can get in. Not sure how you'd clean that out, I think Tesla should make some sort of cover attachment that seals the area even when you have your hitch on. I'll take a picture at some point and post that.

    • Delivery: I just saw pictures on the Internet where people had bows on top of their Model S' on delivery. I didn't get this treatment... LOL
That's it for now. Let me know if you have questions.

Windshield replacement costs might be less than originally feared. See this post where someone reports the price is $880 USD. That's not bad at all, just a little more than what I paid for my normal SUV last year.

I got a quote for $1700 CDN for Xpel for the entire front, waiting on another quote before I decide what to do. Didn't ask about C Quartz (what is that?)

Haven't though about the interior trim and seat backs, but since this thing is so glossy all over it might not be a bad idea. Seems like things would scratch up easily, and the gloss may make it show quite prominently?

One week with the Model X, thoughts.

I'm super happy with my Model X! It has quirks and bugs, but no other car that I've driven compares to this.

    Highlights
    • It's electric! Such a joy to not worry about gas prices.
    • So. Much. Power. Push the pedal and you'll shoot off like a slot car.
    • Falcon wing doors. Love-hate relationship with the doors but there's no denying that they are impressive.
    • The dashboard display is great, now that I've figured out how to turn on the side displays (see attached).
    • The touchscreen for maps is amazing. It's so clear and so ... BIG. Waze would be cool as an alternative to Google Maps.
    • The regenerative braking is AWESOME, changes the way I drive. I hardly touch the brakes.
    • The Tesla staff are amazing, they proactively sent in rebate forms and HOV lane application forms on my behalf - saving me a ton of time. Wow! I feel I will be very well taken care of (and not taken for a ride) if I ever need to bring the car in for work.

    Nitpicking
    • Falcon wing doors. As cool as they are, I've walked into it and been hit by it coming down many times. I'm clumsy, sure, but something motorized coming down is just an accident waiting to happen. Some sort of sensor on the underside would go a long way.
    • Wish it had a parking camera on the that was side/front facing. I am paranoid about curbing the wheels, and it's a pretty big car. For the price of this, adding some front and side cameras should be a no-brainer.
    • I can't park straight in this car! But that's my problem I think. I have not figured out how to auto-park yet, looking forward to trying that.
    • The rear view mirror is useless. It's tiny, and combined with the tinted sloped rear, you don't see much out of the back. You have to use the rear camera, which is pretty fantastic.
    • The trunk is narrow, it's a good foot narrower than the 2006 Honda Pilot this is replacing. However, the exterior dimensions are larger.
    • It's a fingerprint magnet, there are too many glossy surfaces and that's pretty annoying because it makes the car look dirty.
    • Cover-art on music could be larger.
    • Can't figure out any useful commands for the voice commands. Wish this connected to Siri or Google Now.
    • A few bugs I have encountered already:
      • One incident where the charge port door wouldn't close, had to try a few different things before it finally did.
      • One incident where it complained the key wasn't in the car when it was, had to exit and come back in for it to figure that out key was there.
      • One incident where I was in the car and it just powered off or something, had to exit and come back in to turn things on.
      • Spotify cover-art goes out of sync after the playlist repeats, but maybe this is a Spotify or Nexus 6P issue. I've never had a car that displayed cover-art over Bluetooth :)
I've never owned such a high tech amazing car. Love this thing. The nitpicking in no way takes away from the experience of owning this. I feel very lucky to own this amazing vehicle. Love driving it!

I just picked up my MX from Vancouver yesterday and drove it to Kelowna. Anyone else making this trip should make sure to fully charge in Hope. I drive quick and this combined with the elevation gain led to an alert with over 80 km to the next charger that we should be driving at 85 km/hr if we wanted to make it home. We got in with 3% on the battery after driving 10 km below speed limit for a bit and taking advantage of the 15 km descent into West Kelowna. My friends with an S have not had this issue and perhaps it is the added weight of the X going up long hills.

The autopilot is really amazing, especially in stop and go traffic (Hastings street exiting Vancouver) or on the highway. It got a bit squirrelly when the dotted line disappeared on one side due to a passing lane or turning lane starting. Once I understood that, it was easy to guide it along for a few seconds and then let it take over again. You have to pay attention but it sure is relaxing having your hands and feet free for extended periods. True autopilot will likely need high resolution GPS tech down the road.

Aside from that, the car is fantastic. I am one of the lucky ones with no visible defects and all the doors work perfectly. Shaun and the rest at the Vancouver dealership really take care of you well. It drives smooth as silk and even in non Ludicrous mode the highway passing is brisk enough. The upgraded stereo sounds amazing and that front window.......

I fully agree with yz778's comments above. A front camera would be great since it is hard to see the front edge of the car and the ultrasonic warning graphic is not as intuitive. Also hard to see on the display under the steering wheel when you are 6'4" (it is a bit of a dark graphic and I had trouble following it at the same time as looking out the windshield for visual feedback). I wish that you could tilt the steering wheel up more. Then again that has been an issue in all my cars.

I am making a trip to Summerland at some point and, to be very honest, a bit worried about range since there is not much charging infrastructure along the way. Thank you for sharing your experience! You've very brave to make such a long trip after just getting the car :D. I read that there are chargers in Meritt, would you recommend making a stop there given your experience?

Have not tried Auto Pilot, and I haven't figured out how to do the Auto Park either -- on my list of Todos. But I did try the Slack Radio voice search tip from @SMSMD, works beautifully!

I don't think there are any chargers in Merritt. The Tesla website does not show any destination chargers at all. I have sent an email to [emailprotected] regarding Merritt since you are crossing a pass in two directions from there and it sits in a valley between Hope, Lillooet, Kamloops and Kelowna. It also opens up the Spence's bridge option. Apparently their team comes up to Canada twice a year to look at where to put more infrastructure. If others give their opinion, we might sway them to look at Merritt, Oliver and Castlegar sooner. Our US friends would likely welcome those as well since they are close to the border :D

In all fairness to the SC tech fellow in Vancouver, he told me twice that I should charge fully in Hope. I did not listen to him and only charged to 90%. The app in fact told me I was good to go and we charged for 5-10 minutes more. I thought 360 km range should be good for 200 km of travel but it was close and a bit scary.

I also wonder if the extra mass of the MX over the MS is not factored into the range calculations when there is climbing involved over mountain passes. The range might be even on a flat highway but 12,000' of elevation gain over two passes likely takes its toll. I pointed that out to them as well.

Congratulations on your new Model X. I expect to be picking up my Sig X in Montreal in the coming weeks.

I'm also 6'4". Apart from the dash/steering wheel concern, how's the comfort and access feel?

Really comfortable. A lot of head room. I wish the front of the seat came up a touch more to support behind the knees but overall the front seats are really good. I think the autopilot helps a lot as you can sit straight without the usual tension on your right leg on the pedals. Also the windshield is a game changer for us taller folk. I am sitting up straighter without feeling like i need to hunch to see traffic lights, etc..

Car designers must be vertically challenged IMO since building in another inch of steering wheel lift cannot be that hard and yet they persistently under engineer the range of steering wheel positions. It is surely their secret revenge on tall people. It is odd how small things can have such an effect on comfort and after 20 years of adjustable steering wheels we still have to put up with our frustrated mashing of the adjustment lever at the top of the "allowed" range. Why this concept repeatedly defeats such brilliant car designers I will never know.
  • Jun 12, 2016
    Jon
Agreed! Looking forward to the big windshield and the ability to sit straight while waiting at a traffic light.

Have you ever tried to get into a Roadster? I had that opportunity at the TMC conference last year. Felt like I was being born again when I got out.

Thanks for the info. If I'm ever in Kelowna, I'll park next to you so you will wonder why your door doesn't open in what appears to be your car.

    Cheers,

    Jon

Definitely check out Plugshare, there are a handful of EV chargers and one CHAdeMO in town. Also, Merritt is on Tesla's 2016 future supercharger map, so if this can be trusted one should be already in the works.

CQuartz is a spray on protective coating that keeps the car shiney, cleaner looking, and protects a bit from surface damage. It repels water I believe. Probably better the wrap the whole car if you can afford it though.
  • Jun 13, 2016
    yz778
Do you have the CHAdeMO adapter? Looks to be a separate and rather pricey addition, and not sure if it's worth the cost if Tesla will be putting in Super Chargers in more places.
  • Jun 13, 2016
    Porfiry
I'd say it all depends where you're traveling. Interior BC, CHAdeMO isn't worth it. Then there are places that probably won't get superchargers anytime soon that do have CHAdeMO - Sunshine Coast, Vancouver Island, the 101 highway down the Washington/Oregon/California coast. In fact the density of chargers in WA/OR seems a lot better than superchargers.

Buying the adapter probably seems like a waste of money when you get it, but it's invaluable if/when you really need it.

To the Model X owners here, have you had issues with the Falcon Wing Doors?

I had it bump into a post while I was parking under a deck. I happened to be filming it to see how it would handle the low roof, but instead it hit the side. Totally wasn't expecting that.

Having the CHAdeMO adapter on-board can keep you moving on a long trip with far shorter charging times.

Or, it allows you to explore 'off the SC-network' again, with fairly convenient charging times, and your horizon of reachability will continue to expand as the SC-network grows to overtake your favorite CHAdeMO spots (*).

Of course, the physical connector on CHAdeMO is an abominable beast: Bulky beyond its purpose. Confounding, muscular, cryptic sequence of mechanical motions to hook the adapter up, multiple swipes of ChargePoint/GreenLots RFID cards. Although the stations themselves have been wonky in the past... they are improving. Most of them are nameplate power in the 50kW range. But apparently some were only tested with vehicles which pull at most ~20kW. So, after 10-20 minutes of draw from a Tesla, they would overheat.

As others have indicated: PlugShare is a fine tool for planning/navigating the CHAdeMO space.

There are a few stations available heading into the [southern] interior on BC Hwy 3: Manning Park, Princeton, Keremeos. My drive to the service centre ( Rossland -> Vancouver ) used to involve Revelstoke, Kamloops, Hope but is now 'direct' on Hwy 3: Princeton, Hope. This is enabled by availability of CHAdeMO in Princeton and Keremeos.

Or, you could slow your travel down a bit, and use the in-car nav (or PlugShare) to follow the trail of 'level 2' chargers, specifically, the 'destination chargers'. Stop and immerse yourself in some local 'culture' :)

(*) Jun-Aug 2015, I traveled 'all over' the US, mostly on the SC-network. I used CHAdeMO 10 times (**). If I were to re-run that route in June of 2016, the SC-network would have obsoleted 5 of those uses.

(**) Santa Fe NM, Albuquerque NM, Greenfield MA, Winooski VT(2), Portland ME, Auburn ME, Burlington MA, Shawnee KS, Loveland CO

Sorry to see this. I hope your X wasn't damaged in any way. I have seen similar things in the forums. There seem to be only a couple of sensors on the FWDs so if the object between the sensors or if the vehicle is staggered to the adjacent vehicle, the sensors don't sense the obstruction.
  • Jun 13, 2016
    yz778
Thanks @Gymee! The bottom of the door is plastic, so no paint damage. However, that could have been a person or some other object that the sensors don't pick up. I have a feeling there are dead spots that don't register, and the doors will keep going until it physically hits something. In this case, there was a little mark left on the post and that was it. I've mentioned in previous posts, the doors have hit me a couple times on it's way down o_O

It's cool technology, but not fool proof. Hope the Model 3's don't have anything like this, as I don't think the larger customer population will be nearly as forgiving as MS and MX owners. I'll be sharing this experience with my Tesla service centre the next time I go there.

That video will go a long way! Since we are now able to easily record things, I'm going to have the Blackvue dashcam professionally installed in my X.

A couple of months ago, my mom was driving my wife's SUV. Some one backed into her while she was parked at a red light while he was trying to get around a stalled vehicle. Without any proof, there was no way to prove who was at fault. I ended up paying for the repairs to my wife's vehicle but had there been a dashcam, I would have been able to stuff that in his pipe to smoke it!!! For damages to a $150k, I wouldn't want to be put in that position again!

There was another discussion about that question here on TMC. The challenge is getting power to the middle of the windshield. Apparently there is power available, but at least one person took apart the lead to the rear view mirror.

More random musings from Model X ownership
    • On a few occasions now, I'm getting thumbs up from passing drivers and a few have rolled down their windows to ask questions. Neat! I've never had this much attention :)

    • The driver assist features are cool. I tried the speed sensitive cruise control and auto-steer today. The auto-steer is trippy, you do have to keep your hand on the wheel but it's so weird with the wheel moving all by itself. Writing this post as I'm watching the Space X EUTELSAT/ABS launch webcast. Go technology, go every Elon Musk company!

    • Service has been great so far, every email I've sent has been replied to promptly and with useful information or at least with a commitment to follow up. Really liking this customer service experience. Hope Tesla is able to continue this as they go more mass market, it's a real differentiator.
    Some more nitpicking:
    • The frunk should have grocery hooks that divide the space. I'll probably look for something aftermarket, little collapsible storage bins or something - it's a great usable space.

    • Why is the frunk not motorized? Seems like an odd omission considering every other door is motorized. I have to use my hands to open/close this (the horror!).

    • The centre console storage is pretty basic, the weird dividers they give you are not very good. In fact, there aren't very many compartments for such a large car. I'll probably buy some storage bins and velcro them under the seats to store random things that the kids like to bring along on trips.

    • Why is the glove box so small?

    • Why can't I favourite a song with Slacker Radio? It can only favourite the playlist or station.

    • Cover art should be larger in the music player, there's so much space there and it's wasted.

    • Icons could use some work, maybe someone artistically inclined can make a new cohesive looking set of icons and suggest to Tesla? :D Actually, it'd be great if we could apply different themes to the Touchscreen UI. I'd love a Knight Rider theme.

    • Would like more Google Map options, e.g. ability to choose different routes. Anyone know if it's possible to send driving directions from my phone to the car?

    • The voice synth on Google Maps is weird, strange pronunciation on some street names. Also, want some other voice options. Like KITT, from Knight Rider.

    • Disappointed the car does not play a welcome prompt when I get in. It should say "Welcome" or play a little customizable tune. Like the Knight Rider intro, as soon as I open the door. :p

    • The charge port door doesn't pop open by itself anymore. Will check this out at some point.

    • The driver side window. When it's wet, it makes a weird sound coming up and down. Adding to the list of things to check out when I go to the service centre.

    • I think my car knows what I weight. It should connect to my phone and record my weight for those fitness trackers.

    • Why doesn't the driver door handle have an option for fingerprint recognition? Ok I'm having too much fun with this, I should stop now and get on with my day. :p
Absolutely love driving this car. Any tips or tricks from other MS/MX owners?
