Model S Insurance part 1

Got a phone call from my insurance company today (Amica Mutual) that the Model S is finally in their system for underwriting. When I called about 6 weeks ago, they told me the car was not yet in their database, but estimated the cost for insurance at between $1000 and $1100 (if I recall correctly). Today, they called and informed me that the Model S was added to their underwriting database, and the cost for insurance for 1 year will be $1808/year. That is the premium for adding the Model S as a fourth car with 2 adult drivers in the family. For comparison, our Toyota Prius is about $750/year, our Lexus is about $900/year, and our Mercedes sports car is $950/year. The Model S is twice as expensive as our other cars. The agent said the rate is based on the fact that the car has no theft/accident history, and they are concerned about break-ins to steal the 17 inch display, among other items of the car. Not happy with this news.

    Most disappointed in this news...

I bet that 17" display will be all but useless when removed from the car.
It isn't like they have an iPad in there - it is purpose built hardware.
Sounds like your insurance company is starting out with a "let's assume worst case" plan with the idea to adjust down later as they learn from experience.
I think some other insurance companies start out low on new models, and raise if they have to.

I had a different experience. My state farm agent quoted me in the mid 700's, less if not primary vehicle. That was for a non-performance 85kwh. Think you need to shop around...

Yeah sweg...sounds like your insurance company is out to screw you. I'd advise you to look elsewhere...or at least threaten it, and see if they respond.

Saw that one coming. I think I even mentioned it when we were discussing the Model X unveiling.

The risk of car theft will be much lower with a Tesla. Most thieves will walk away because they don't 'know' the car and how to get it started, because they are afraid they will stick out among other cars on the road, or because - if they do know it's electric - they are afraid they will run out of battery power (most people are ignorant to the range of the Model S). So a lower rather than a higher insurance premium would be fair.

It's probably been discussed before but I'd bet if the car were somehow stolen that Tesla could find it immediately. Think of it as built in lo-jack. Has this been discussed before?

And back to the topic, you absolutely should talk to a different insurance company and get a quote for switching all your cars over, then take that quote to your company.

I think a rumor should be started out on the street that the nav displays inside Tesla EVs are electrified and when tampered with, produce an electric shock strong enough to incapacitate.

Actually, screw the rumor. I think the cars should just come with that as a standard option ;)

Sorry to hear that about the insurance rates. As others have said, I'd suggest shopping around at least to see what other places offer.

Time to start shopping around for a new insurance company... seriously, they're trying to hose you.

Frankly the rates for your other rides seem pretty high to me... then again, they vary so much by location...
  • Jun 19, 2012
    Grendal
They're definitely trying to screw you because they don't know anything about the car. It has an all around 5 star crash rating which should mean a lot to them. Other companies will be hungry for your business - 4 cars.

No kidding. The expensive thing to insure against isn't replacing the car it's medical expensive for the people who're hurt in an accident.

Rates vary significantly state to state. But in general, there is little benefit of being "loyal" to your insurance company IMO. Unless you get some sort of significant savings by having a policy that covers lots of different things (life, auto, boat, home, etc.) it doesnt pay to stay with one nowadays. In many cases, they repackage your policy via different entities anyways. I'As others have said, i'd shop around.

    CapitalistOppressor
They are worried about theft of the display console??

It's not an IPad, its a touch sensitive screen. It's likely that the CPU isn't even integrated and it's not like there is a consumer market for it. You can't take it to McDonalds to use the free WiFi because a.) It doesn't have WiFi capability, and b.) It doesn't have a power source, and c.) It will have wires and junk dangling from the back of it. And even if it has all of those things it doesn't have a consumer operating system installed and consumer operating systems don't have drivers for all of the proprietary equipment.

Of course some crack head might rip it out anyways, but once he finds out its useless and has no street value he'll tell all the rest of the crack heads in the world and they'll stop trying.

Personally, I think your insurance company assumes that if you are willing to pay what they assume to be a huge premium for an electric vehicle, you'll be willing to pay through the nose for coverage. They are soaking you basically. Try shopping around.

I think there maybe some apples to oranges comparison here (or maybe not). Most insurance companies quote per 6 months, as I would expect the State Farm is doing, but Swegman is saying his quote is for the year. Translated = $904 / 6mo. Still sounds pretty darn steep.

I called my Allstate agent, and they still don't have it in their system yet. They did have the Fiskar Karma, and if the Standard is priced at $110,000 (I'm guessing at the price), then the insurance would be $1100 every 6 months. My agent thinks the Model S may fall in around the $580 to 640 range - based on a $60k value. I didn't get a chance to ask him about an $85k priced S.
  • Jun 19, 2012
    Thumper
I called State Farm, and they gave me a quote of $490 for 6 mo. This is less than my Safeco policy now on a 2003 Passat wagon.
  • Jun 19, 2012
    gg_got_a_tesla
My experience with Liberty Mutual was similar to Thumper's with State Farm. My current premium of about $950 for 12 months for 1 car ('08 Mini Clubman) and 2 drivers is going to go up to about $1,950 for 12 months.

My agent indicated that it'll primarily be a function of the price of the car (the quote was for $80K).

Yup, loyalty means jack. After ten years of ever-increasing premiums with AllState (sure, my driving record wasn't particularly clean), switched to Liberty Mutual last year and saved more than 30% on the premium.
  • Jun 19, 2012
    AnOutsider
I'm with Liberty Mutual and my agent actually recommend switching providers every few years to get the best rate. I guess things tend change, and if rates drop not all agencies pass that on to the customer.

It's very prudent to have a $1 million umbrella policy; such a policy sits over all your vehicle and home policies. The terms of the umbrella policy dictate what the coverage needs to be in the underlying policies.

At least. I carry $5mil. It's (relatively) cheap if you carry a decent level of coverage in your auto policy.

I just had a crazy experience with Progressive. Tesla's not in their system and the first person quoted me roughly $3000 for 50/100/50, etc. coverage. WOW! I'm not sure what her role was--not an underwriter (she couldn't even advise on the coverage I had, but I forget who she said I'd have to talk with...not an underwriter but some other type of role).

I called back, annoyed and wanting that "we'll quote our competitors" thing they do. Apparently they only do that for new people (or new quotes?), but I was shuffled to an underwriter, who had to call me a couple of times while researching my quote (after getting the basic info from my account and a few more details from me). She was baffled how the original quote had been done without being asked the value of the car! ;-) For value, I had to admin $93,300 (she wanted tax and title included, but not tax credits).

Long story short, the absurd $3000 quote dropped to $1435/6 months when she updated my old policy--apparently grandfathered and without all the cool stuff they do now. I hate insurance companies....

But then with a couple more Qs, she quoted me a final $699/6 months as a new policy (including paid-in-full discount)! Not as good as my $533/6 months on the 2000 Miata, but tons better than the absurd $3000 or even the $1435 "updated existing policy" quote.

That's not counting a $18 discount for paperless, raising my comprehensive deductible, and adding $28 new "full glass" coverage (essentially $0 deductible for comprehensive for glass, which I'd never heard of).

So it's not as good as Todd's $1070/year Progressive quote for two cars ;-P and I will check Geico and USAA (my other half's on USAA and multi-car apparently helps a ton; if I kept the Miata, the combined rate would be $868/6 months).

So my lessons learned, which I knew but didn't realize would affect things so much, are (a) talk to an underwriter and (b) have any quote rewritten as a new quote. Sheesh, this should just be automagic.

    - - - Updated - - -

Whoops, ignore that part; the multi-car/one-person discount is huge, but it's just like 10% or so savings with the two of us with two cars...still, worth me checking out.

    - - - Updated - - -

Geico online quote (not sure how accurate those are) is $891/6 months. ;-( They make me claim my other half, though, unlike Progressive, and also we've each had a speeding ticket in the past few years but Progressive doesn't seem to care (or it just doesn't affect us as much, or maybe they just haven't noticed yet?)...hmm.
  • Dec 12, 2012

I strongly recommend the $0 deductible on glass. That's the only claim I've ever made on my BMW policy, and I've used it to buy 3 new front windshields -- for free. Stone chips, etc are all too common around here.
  • Dec 12, 2012
    kendallpb
Same here! It's got to be the most common comprehensive claim out there. I'm surprised, but thrilled, they have this. Geico doesn't appear to.

And I figured out Geico's quote; they are really sticking it to me on the collision deductible; a $500 deductible costs $431.58 for the Model S, while Progressive's $500 deductible costs only $180. Some of that may be due to Progressive letting me exclude my other half, but still.

Weird. I selected Tesla Model S online when signing up and encountered no issues. That would be nuts if having a make/model in their system would be state-specific! (the *rates*, yes, but the car?)

When I tried it a few days ago, it wasn't an option on the web site, but I was logged in and I don't remember just how I got to the page. When I called, I spoke with two people--one, an underwriter!--and both said it wasn't in their list! But looking at the site right now (and it's creepy that going in anonymously, it pulls up the cars at my house...only one of which is insured by them!...), I do get it via their Flash interface. The interface I used before was different though, as a customer, didn't look anything like the one I get from progressive.com. Maybe that's why?

I dunno, I think they are a confused company and I am a confused customer of theirs. ;-)

Just visited my Allstate rep here in the Bay Area. Model S is $692/6 months as a daily driver, 12k miles/year, 100/300/100 and $1k deductible, clean record. For reference, Roadster is $742/6 months, same coverage.

Erie (who can't give me a quote without a VIN, huh) said that speed cameras don't count, only real in person ones. So I redid the Geico online quote out of curiosity and now it's $661, a little less than Progressive (but ultimately not enough to make me change, methinks, given the "full glass" option from Progressive and a little customer loyalty on my part). ;-) Still gotta check USAA though.

I live in NC and my current insurance Co., AllState quoted me $607/6-months, State Farm, $450 and Geico $254. In addition, Geico quoted my other 2 cars about 50% less with my family good driving records. I know which insurance company I will go next.

Best insurance for my model s!

I would like some opinions on what auto insurance companies are the best, regardless of price! I want the best coverage I can get including if my friend drives the car and crashes it, knock on wood! I heard Geico and Progressive are good. My dad always had AAA but I don't know if I like them. I have Safeco now which I don't think is good enough. I want the best for my baby! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Got my first call from my DS yesterday so I'm putting all my ducks in a row to be ready for the car. Soooo excited! Hard to sleep!

The quoted rates are especially interesting in light of the J.D. Power Customer Satisfaction Survey that rated Allstate toward the bottom and both GEICO and State Farm in the mid-range. The Hartford, Liberty Mutual, and American Family were the top rated car insurance companies http://www.forbes.com/sites/jimgorzelany/2012/05/11/auto-insurance-companies-with-the-most-satisfied-customers/ .

Live in Arizona. I was quoted $1100/6 months by my original insurance company American Commerce, but then I got a great rate from Progressive - $490/6 months. In fact I switch all of our 4 cars and 3 drivers (including my 16 year-old daughter) to Progressive for about $1700/6 months which was less than I was paying for American Commerce for only 3 cars without the Model S.

My delivery is scheduled for next week. I've got a Model S performance coming and I live in Southern California. I've been with AAA auto insurance for over 15 years, but their quote was insane. Here is what I got today:

    AAA = $2750 / yearWawanesa - $1643/year
    GEICO = $1425 / year

I kept my other 3 cars on AAA, but the Model S will be on GEICO. This is for 100/300 BI coverage, 50 property, 100/300 Uninsured Motorist, and $500 deductable.

A lot of companies are struggling to finance and insure the cars, since they are so new.

What company? From the ones I've looked at online and spoken with, some seem to require it and some not. The Progressive underwriter didn't need one; I think USAA's site required it (I may be misremembering--might've been another company). I don't know why they'd need one unless they just can't trust someone when they say "it's a Tesla Model S year 2012" or whatever (some kinda legal/liability thing their lawyers require). I'm sure once I go to start the insurance they'll require the VIN.

Doing an online quote from Geico for our 2 existing vehicles (Toyota Tacoma pickup and Chevy Volt), plus the P85 Model S, is over $500 less that what AAA is charging is for 2 vehicles ($2127 vs. $2647).

I'm on hold with AAA, who can't seem to find the Model S by VIN, or even by looking up Tesla. Geez, I can't be the first of their insured to try to get a quote for one, can I?

After 27 years with AAA, it looks we will be saying goodbye to them. Their service is great, but their prices have shot up over the past few years, and though I would pay a small premium to stick with them, I'm guessing even if they do find the car, it will be about $1250 more a year to stick with them.

EDIT: AAA finally came back and said the policy for the 3 cars would be over $5200! Insane!

Y'know, it begins to sound like the whole industry operates on WAGs; there is no rational metric or standard that could account for such discrepancies. So the customers' best strategy is to survey the field, every time, and see who is guessing low.

If cost is no object and customer service and responsiveness are primary, then Chubb is fantastic. I would summarize them as insurance for extremely wealthy people, which they basically specialize in.

I have no association to Chubb. My father worked in business insurance for nearly 30 years before a total career change, and although he is nowhere near wealthy, he places a premium on insurance service after all his years in the industry. He has had Chubb insurance on his home and cars forever and would never switch.

I never have paid for Chubb because they were always so much more expensive than other companies, but my father has always nagged me with: "you get what you pay for"

    Hope that helps

I have had GEICO for about 5 years now, switched yesterday to Progressive because their rate was much better than GEICO's for my model S (same limits as logan). Plus GEICO wouldn't do gap insurance. I am paying about $780 for 6 months for the Tesla and a 2007 Civic (in Atlanta, garaged car) with gap insurance on the Tesla.

My GEICO quote was about 800 for the Tesla, and 100 for the Civic.

Spend a lot of time insurance shopping yesterday and ended up disappointed. I was hoping to keep my home and auto insurance together, but since I have an unusual house, and soon an unusual car (or at least not yet mass-market) it doesn't look like it's going to be possible. (Notes below apply to Texas, insurers have very different pricing and approaches for different states)

    * Allstate- Been with them for years and been very happy, but they didn't have the Model S in their system and wanted $2000 more a year to cover it than most competitors.
    * Geico - Had the Model S in the system and the best price to date on the Model S and other cars, but they don't work with an underwriter who will work touch my house.
    * State Farm - Just increased Texas home insurance rates by 20%. They did have the MS in their system, but at a higher rate than Geico.
    * Farmers - Had the MS in their system, but at a rate 3 times what Geico offered.
    * Progressive - Had the MS in their system and the pricing is close to Geico, but not quite as good. They would insure the house, but jacked the deductible for hail damage up so high the insurance was practically useless except for a fire.

At this point I gave up and went to an independent insurance agent. Hopefully they can find some better options otherwise. I'll let you know next week. If they can't find anything better, I'll probably move my auto insurance to Geico and leave my homeowners with Allstate. Hopefully by the time I renew Allstate next year will have their act together when it comes to Tesla.

My Allstate agent was understanding that I wouldn't be able to stay with them for auto at that crazy price, but he did warn me that Geico's collision coverage, unlike Allstate, doesn't provide cover you if you loan the car to someone else and let them drive it. That does give my pause since I was hoping to let plenty of others drive the Model S. I want to help sell more Teslas, but I don't want to have to pay out of pocket or deal with issues trying to collect from a friend if they get in a wreck while giving a run around the block.

Does anyone know about how other insurers handle this?

EDIT: As logan pointed out below the information I received from my Allstate agent about Geico was false. I called Geico back today and the collision coverage will cover any driver who has the owner's permission to drive the vehicle.

With regard to Allstate, my Allstate agent (in Florida) couldn't find the Model S in their system either until she looked under 2012 rather than 2013. The rates were very reasonable even with low comprehensive and collision deductibles.

It would be difficult to determine what your exact premium would be based on the quotes listed in this forum, since insurance rates vary based on a variety of factors including state/county, claims experience, number of drivers/cars, multi-policy discounts, policy limits/deductibles, etc. Nevertheless, it is helpful to hear from others on this forum regarding their experience with different carriers and the comparative differences in rates for the MS. In my case, USAA quoted me $733 for six-months, which was about $100 lower than State Farm.

Thanx for all your posts. It seemed like GEICO was the best and they also are amongst my favo(u)rite commercials and its easy to online quote me. Of course I had to use my aforementioned accident and so my apples to apples quote was for $2,378/yr. I'll stick with AAA for the $18!

I don't know the answer to this question-

Can you cover car 1 with insurer A and car 2 with insurer B? Or do insurance companies have clauses against this? My guess is you would end up with double liability coverage and therefore it should price out unfavorably. But with the wide range on premium quotes on the S right now, who knows?

I had usaa for 7 years but they were no longer competitive. I switched to Allstate who I had used previously.

Just amazing how messed up these companies can be state to state. A month ago I waltzed into my Allstate agent's office here in NorCal and they pulled the Model S right up (even noting it was Performance which I'm sure didn't help my rate) and charged me $659 per 6 months. I can see the rates being different but you'd think they'd share a computer system and so would at least list the car. Weird.

As I explained to Steve in posting #232, the problem might be that the agent tried looking up a 2013 model and not a 2012 model.

Larry - Thanks again for the suggestion. I asked the agent to find the car under 2012 and she was shocked that is was there. As you mentioned, the price was competitive. Almost as low as Geico and when you add the multipy policy discount that I can't get with Geico because they won't cover my home Allstate wins with a very reasonable rate.

    Thanks again!

USAA hooked me up yesterday and added my Model S to the policy. It came out to be $25 more a quarter veruses my 2002 Honda S2000. Overall the car is not bad to insure.

I called my insurance company (Amica) yesterday. The still don't have the car in their database and said they need to contact underwriting. They told me they would call back in about 30 minutes. No callback yesterday or today. Will call them on Wednesday to see what is going on. Can't believe they can't locate the car in their database.

Just called Geico, and the gentleman with whom I spoke said they do not write policies on electric vehicles... ANY electric vehicles. I asked him to check with his supervisor, and to specifically mention Tesla, and he came back with the same answer. Was very nice about it, but it was a very clear "no way". Does anyone already have Geico insurance for a Tesla in this group, or has had a policy quoted for a Tesla?

That's very interesting. I went to Geico website and got a quote for Tesla model S at approximately $1200 a year. They had Tesla model S on their website. This is in California.

I am having problems getting a quote from my insurance company, Amica. The Tesla is not in their system. They have to go to underwriting. They told me they do not normally insure $90K plus cars. Then underwriters came back with a quote of about $2K/year, but it is for the Roadster. Still waiting to hear re: the Model S.

I like Amica, but may have to look elsewhere. What insurance companies do people in Maryland recommend.

After getting my VIN, got a quote from my Liberty Mutual agent; for two drivers and two cars now, a delta of $890 for 12 months. $500k liability coverage and such. Not shabby at all.

This response from Geico totally mytifies me. I have been a more than satisfied customer with Geico for over 25 years. When I called they just needed to know what size battery pack I was getting and what coverage I wanted...no problem.

I'm also an Amica customer in MD and just got a quote of $958 a year which is about what we're paying for our two cars (Prius & Odyssey) now. I called last week and got the same story - someone from underwriting will call you next week. I called the national office again today since no one has called back. Since I don't have my car yet, I gave them a VIN found in the forums just to get a quote. I tried to finagle the VIN to what I *think* mine might be and their system was smart enough to know better.

For comparison, I got a ball park quote from Liberty Mutual that was almost $600 a year for the Model S. This includes multi-car and corporate (about 10%) discounts.

Jcadman22, was the quote for a regular production or a performance. Leaning towards finalizing with the performance model. Thanks. One thing that will hurt my rate is I have a 17 year old son that just got his license in August, and they told me he can not be excluded from a policy on the car as long as he lives at home (in August he will leave for college).

What VIN did you use to get a quote?
  • Jan 11, 2013
    mcornwell
That seems odd. So if you had a Bugatti, your insurance would be sky high since they assume a 17yo would be driving a 1000 horsepower sports car, even if you bought him a '95 Camry?

Sounds like you need to get competitive quotes...
  • Jan 11, 2013

i've been told by several insurance people that Maryland law requires that my son be covered for every car in the household as long as he lives at home; that he can not be excluded on the car. For a frame of reference, when he was added to the policy, the insurance rate went up $2,000 for the year. I complained about that, until friends told me their insurance went up even more when their son or daughter got their license. Adding him more than doubled the cost for insurance for 3 cars.

I used a VIN from the first 60kWh thread since that's what I'll be getting. FWIW, there's a cross-link to the Decoding Model S VINs thread which I followed in my attempt to generate my own unique VIN - because, well, it felt wrong using someone else's actual VIN. But, as stated previously, a real VIN is what is needed for a quote.

Just got an online quote on USAA, for MSRP $102k 2012 Model S (they don't show it under 2013 yet), and its at $1038/yr. Not too bad.

IDS Property Casualty is quoting me $330 every six months for my 60kWh Model S (MSRP of $70,500) with a $500 deductible and 10k miles of driving per year (no commute driving). That's its sub-total on a two-car, two-driver policy that also carries my homeowner's insurance. I started quoting this thread so the gal on the phone would get a sense of what's going on with prices. I said it was competitive enough but that I expected it would go down later as their company learned more about it. The gal said it wasn't in their system yet so she did a manual entry. IDS Property Casualty is the premier insurance for Costo members. Progressive is the second tier. They basically went off the value of the car and the parameters I listed here. Like other folks, the word "Tesla" was confusing. The model "S" was confusing. The reaction of the gal when she went to the Tesla website was "wow."
You can put a price on the insurance, but you can't put a price on the reaction. When we were all done with quotes and payments, I said "oh, in a couple years, they are releasing a near $30,000 car. Might be worth a look."

I finally got a quote from Amica for $2200/year. That is for $500K coverage with a $250 deductable on collison if it is not my fault and $500 deductable if it is my fault. When I asked why so high, I was told because I have a 17 year old son that just got his license 5 months ago living in the household and he can not be excluded. BTW, when asking for quotes, make sure it is for a year. Amica initially quoted me about $1700, and when i started asking questions, I discovered it was not for a year, but for the remainder of my current policy term.

I'm 28y/o homeowner with 28y/o wife in St. Louis County and the cheapest quote by far for 100/300/100 with 500 deductible was also from Geico at $440/6mos. I do have one minor accident on record in the last 3 years. Adding our Golf TDI to this Geico quote only adds another $100/6mos, so the total increase from switching our other car to the Model S should be minimal.

I was told by two different insurance agents that they can't get really accurate quotes without a VIN number, and that they definitely can't issue a policy without a VIN number.

It gets more interesting. Apparently if the car (make/model/year) is not in the insurer's system, they will still insure it "by value", but that's usually more expensive than if the car is listed.

And then she tried to explain the different parts of car insurance in my state (collison/comprehensive/liability/no-fault/etc.) and I got completely lost. Homeowner's insurance is so much simpler.

Thought I would contribute what I've learned. I'm going with Progressive vs USAA. I had to call USAA since they don't have the car in their database yet. I don't have a VIN yet. 44 y/o, wife 44 y/o clean record, Virginia. My coverage amounts are lower than Kevin Welch's. 100K/300K $500 deductible, rental and towing covered. I also have a 2012 Prius Plug In Advanced bought for about $39K that is included on the policy since multi car discount brings price down bit.

    Progressive - $443 Tesla, $425 Prius - Total - $762 for 6 months
USAA - Tesla + Prius total $734 for 6 months.

USAA said price may change when VIN is submitted. My Model S is standard blue 85 with air and tech. $84 K cost

Don't forget that USAA will give you part of their car insurance profits at the end of 6 months also. So while it looks the same you might be missing out on a rebate after 6 months.

    - - - Updated - - -

Plus dealing with USAA is way better than any bank or insurance company I have ever dealt with. Other than their requirement to fax them stuff. They won't take PDF emails.
