Andyw2100 The show was "Three's Company." (I watched it too!)
I too hope you both get the heated steering wheel. I remember everything you referenced with respect to that timeline, gpetti. My only concern, if I were you, would be the fact that when you re-ordered, it still was not officially part of the package, so if they run low on supply for any reason, your car is one Tesla doesn't have to put it in. I remember your having said it was important to you, which is why I had asked if you had somehow managed to officially make it part of the deal when you reordered. Let's just hope you get it!
Dec 27, 2014
svp6 Delivery still pending, no info as to where the car is at this time. Finished production 12/21. I would not hold my hopes high for a heated steering wheel, someone from Wisconsin took delivery of a car entering production 12/15 (one day after mine), no luck. I think really it will be a tiny fraction of lucky owners who get that. I ordered the winter package in a hope for a lottery win, but I will not be too upset if no luck.
Dec 27, 2014
zzzzdoc OK. Finally left the black hole today. Took delivery of mine. Old seats. Told to expect new ones in March or April.
More details tomorrow, then I'll start posting in the other thread. But at least one less car in the black hole.
Dec 27, 2014
gpetti LOL - sorry 3s-a-charm. Wasn't mocking your handle, probably tiredness and or scotch related typo.
I guess nows the time to see whether I can get any info on this feature as I guess having reordered, my expectations are going up. I guess I could keep the date in February but there may reach a point where I say screw the feature, give me the car.
Dec 27, 2014
huntjo Still with us huh? I thought you said you were canceling your order a week ago? Tesla call your bluff?
Dec 28, 2014
zzzzdoc Basically yes they did, but it still came down to the wire. Tomorrow would have been my last delivery date possible in 2014. I ran into a black hole member at the Brandon supercharger yesterday whose car won't make it in 2014, so there are still some out there.
I kind of expected a little more pomp and circumstance with the delivery. No big bow like people posted here, no sign with my name on it, just my car in a corner outside.
That being said, the nice guy who went over the car in great detail did do a very good job explaining everything and answering all of our questions that he could (it was obvious that he was winging questions regarding the seat replacement.) And despite my conversations with my DS regarding how my paperwork would say that the seats needed to be replaced, and I was sent that beforehand, that all vanished and had to be redone at paperwork signing time.
It was jaw-dropping how many cars they had packed in like sardines in the showroom. Plus a large number charging in the service bays. So they must have just gotten a whole bunch of truck deliveries right after Christmas.
Here's a picture, and this is only half of the room:

GetAmped I am officially out of the Black Hole, I have seen pictures of my Silver on Black P85D here in Toronto and am scheduled for the delivery today (Monday Dec 29). Hang in there everyone else, there is light ahead...
Dec 28, 2014
gpetti Congrats to the latest escapees. Definitely seems to be a variation in delivery standards - probably depending on volume of deliveries. I'm guessing GetAmped will get a fairly royal treatment in Toronto.
Dec 29, 2014
osama Congrats ... I am sure Scott will give you the royal treatment. Please post some pics of your new baby.
Dec 29, 2014
sundoc Congrats GetAmped!
Did you get your car? I was there today to drop off my winters... hopefully should be getting mine soon

Dec 31, 2014
mrElbe My P85D is sliding further into the black hole. After 22 days "in production" it is still in Fremont according to the latest inquiries. Dashboard still shows " the factory is building your Model S " and delivery is still showing "Late December" ( year not specified ). They must be building it by hand or there is parts shortage of the chromed exhaust pipe tips.
Dec 31, 2014
gpetti Good that you can still joke, albeit through gritted teeth! I tend to look at your car as an indication of what my experience would have been if I hadn't re-ordered - although mine started building on 11/21. Of course its possible it would have suddenly broken loose before Christmas but having made the decision to re-order its easier to justify if the car would still have missed December. As many people have said - you will LOVE the car when it arrives but it definitely sucks to be still sitting in "the black hole" while cars are being delivered all around you. I wonder if the car doesn't finish building until 2015 - will your VIN change to a 2015?
Jan 4, 2015
sundoc Just to bring this full circle.
I took delivery of my D this afternoon, my DS opened up the store for me on his day off. Super amazing guy and has been throughout this process.
I got the next gen seats in front, futuris in back, but as I'd expected no heated wheel nor yatch floor.
The car is awesome, but we know that already. I've got the 19's wrapped in Nokian R2s as my winter setup, compared to the test drives with the 21s, the 19s feel really floaty. Ofcourse I've got to factor in the huge difference in weather conditions as well as the state of the tires (brand spankin' new vs worn in).
So for this round of Tesla purchasing, I'm out of this hole... lets see how the next purchase in the future goes. LOL
Good luck to any stragglers still left in this abyss... don't worry, one way or another you'll get out!
Jan 4, 2015
gpetti Thanks for this final sharing in tales from the black hole! Great to see you finally get out. Now if we can just get mrelbe out!
Jan 4, 2015
mrElbe Thanks for the kind thoughts. It has to end soon or I'll run out of alcohol to drown in.
Jan 5, 2015
Jgdixon I was still stuck as well but was informed my car was in Michigan last night, so finally moving out of Chicago.
It is ironic that as some of the first people to order we are getting our cars last.
I think first off the line we were buried in a lot in Fremont. Then last on the train but first off and then buried in Chicago.
I doubt I'll get the heated steering wheel.
Jan 5, 2015
Jaff I'm sure you will be picking your cars up soon guys...I feel for you (as we picked ours up last Saturday)...Scott, Patricia, and the whole delivery team were great...this car is well worth the wait...Cindy drove it back home in truly awful weather / roads conditions...the car's performance was nothing short of outstanding!
Jan 5, 2015
patp Got my car too (production November 27). No heated steering wheel but next gen seats in the front.
Arrived home (Montreal store to Quebec City - no supercharger yet...) with 20km left. It was cold (-16c) but the P85D is really less efficient (for now).
Amazing in the snow.
Jan 5, 2015
sundoc
This is pretty much what I said to our DS the other day!
Hopefully everyone will soon have theirs...

Congrats!
Jan 7, 2015
wk057 Anyone actually still in the early order black hole?
Jan 7, 2015
mrElbe After emailing Tesla this morning, my car miraculously finished production today. Explanation was the factory idled during the holidays. So a light at the end of the black hole is appearing.
Jan 7, 2015
sundoc wow... congrats on having finished production!
Hopefully you'll soon have your car.
Jan 7, 2015
gpetti Seems like your car got forgotten somewhere but it's great to hear of some progress finally. It was starting to look like I might get my reorder car before you.
- - - Updated - - -
I think mrelbe is the last BH member AFAIK. I will probably report my delivery when it finally comes though technically I'm not in the hole anymore.
Jan 8, 2015
3s-a-charm Ok, this seems like a good place to blow off some steam... I ordered October 11 (day after the D announcement) full of excitement. Didn't enter production until Dec. 15th which seemed like forever compared to others. Completed production Dec. 27th. Was originally told Dec. 29 delivery. Then told Jan. 3 then Jan. 8/9. Nothing. Others in/around me are getting deliveries which is frustrating me as I feel as though they leave Freemont with a full-load but just can't seem to get my car on a carrier.
My wife and I both work where we don't commute but drive to meet clients daily. We are balancing one vehicle use which is difficult and when needed, one of us is using a Car2Go (like a zip car - pay per use Smart Cars). Compound this with frigid (-20*) temperatures and every time I need to walk in the snow with my suit on to get into a cold Smart Car to go to a meeting my frustration level goes up a notch or three - especially knowing my $152,000 super car is sitting in a lot in California outside the factory just waiting for transport.
That's all... done venting. Will change my mindset and appreciate all the great things in my life as I can't let this break me but it sure is trying my patience. Thank you for listening!

Jan 8, 2015
andrewket I'd be more than annoyed, too. Hang in there.
Jan 8, 2015
gpetti Its very strange, you seem to have hit your own personal black hole as theoretically the original black hole phase was already done by the time your car started building. That being said I know of a Calgary owner whose car started building on the 13th and was done on the 16th, arrived in Vancouver on the 23rd (sans next gen seats). Your build seems to be longer than normal and now you're in no mans land again. Might soon be time for you to escalate. Seemed like Mr. Elbe's car got forgotten somewhere until it got escalated. I don't think your DS will get in trouble if you do escalate, but you could probably discuss options with him. Also I might suggest that you ask him if you can have a rental car until yours comes in.
Jan 8, 2015
Jgdixon I am in a taxi typing this on my way to pick up my D.
Probably one of the last to come out of the "hole"
I'll report back soon!
Jan 8, 2015
gpetti Nearly forgot about you - still clawing your way out. It appears that Mrelbe may be the actual last now. Maybe we should all chip in and get him a last black hole survivor t-shirt
Look forward to hearing/seeing your car jg.
Jan 8, 2015
mrElbe John, pictures or it didn't happen.
Jan 8, 2015
Jaff Congrats John, glad the long wait is over for you!
Jan 8, 2015
mrElbe John, don't forget to update the spreadsheet.
Jan 8, 2015
EarlyAdopter That is very frustrating. Hang in there just a little longer and it will be over soon, you'll have the car, it will be awesome, and chances are you'll forget all about this.
Two years ago with my first Model S I was tantalizingly offered a December 2012 delivery after having waited a _year_ for them to start producing the Model S and work through the order backlog to my slot. No guarantees, but they were going to make a big end of the year push. It seemed the wait was finally over.
Then day after day went by. Then December went by. Then it was into January. Very little communication. I vaguely remeber writing "The 5 Stages of Tesla Delivery" here at that time, which went something like:
1. Excitement
2. Anticipation
3. Frustration
4. Dissapointment
5. Fulfillment
In the end, the car showed up January 17th. And it was awesome. Far exceeded my expectations. Any lingering bad taste left in my mouth from the production delay quickly dissipated, and soon was completely forgotten.
It's tough going through the Stages of Tesla Delivery, I know, I've been through them twice, but it will be worth it in the end. Hang in there.
Jan 8, 2015
Jgdixon OK got the car, love it so far. So many improvements from my Sig!
No heated wheel or next gen seats.
Drove it in light snow and it's rock solid.
i will say there is quite a whine from the front motor at low speed, off and on the throttle.
I'll monitor that over the next little while.
Jan 10, 2015
3s-a-charm Ok, thank you EarlyAdopter. I have a nice loaner (rental car) so it isn't inconvenient anymore which has minimized the frustration portion.
Jan 10, 2015
patp Congrats! I agree, big step from a Sig!
Jan 13, 2015
mrElbe I am still at the bottom of the hole. Car is still in Fremont apparently waiting for a full truckload to Toronto.
Jan 13, 2015
gpetti maybe time to kick up a fuss again. After how long you've been waiting you should be held up waiting for other cars. Obviously that is good practice for normal operations but your car has already been delayed weeks longer than most other December cars.
So long as it doesn't delay mine
Jan 13, 2015
wk057 It's my fault. I told Tesla that USA folks should have priority over Canada for tax credit purposes... lol.
Jan 13, 2015
3s-a-charm Just heard mine got on a truck today bound for Vancouver. Delivery between January 21-24. Production completed Dec. 27th.
Jan 13, 2015
Andyw2100 Perhaps you better get in touch again, and let them know you were referring only to 2014.
Jan 20, 2015
frosken It seems some European customers are cought in a new black hole. My car has been in production since 27th December, 24 days and counting.
Over a week ago my DS told me my car was finished 7th January and being prepped for shipping. Just now I got of the phone with my DS who told me my car is held back together with a number of others. He did not know why or how long it would take.
Jan 20, 2015
gpetti Crap, that doesn't sound good. My car only started building on January 10th but has now been about 9 elapsed days which is definitely longer than a normal build. Is it possible I re-ordered only to fall into another black hole?
Jan 20, 2015
mrElbe A shortage of flux capacitors again?
Jan 20, 2015
TimboDuck gpetti, I'm in the same situation as you. My Silver P85D (P669XX) with 21" and air suspension went into production on Jan 9th and I expected that it would take about a week. But still no update 11 days later.
Jan 20, 2015
Bendiks Exactly same situation for me. Same dates, same message.
Jan 20, 2015
darthy001 @frosken according to my DS my car is travelling across the US at the moment so if there is a european black hole it does not include all cars...
Jan 20, 2015
EarlyAdopter Ah geeze, not again.
Here's hoping it's a delay from a shortage of transportation and not another production/parts issue.
Jan 20, 2015
breser Very curious. 85D orders have been being pushed back pretty much every week due to supposed part issues (at least that's what my DS keeps telling me). But I don't think part issues would delay cars that were already in production, I'd expect them to just not start those cars.
My 85D went into production this past Saturday but the estimated delivery has stayed at Late February. The strange thing about this is when my end of line date was Jan 26th I had a estimated delivery of February. But now my car is showing in production earlier than that and it still is showing Late February. One theory I have is that the estimated dates only update once a week on Wednesday night. If not then possibly they've changed how they're showing In Production or the rate of production has slowed down for some unknown reason. I guess I'll know sometime late tomorrow night or Thursday morning if my Estimated Delivery changes.
I'd imagine that production is a tad slower this month due to giving employees a break after the push to get December P85D deliveries out. But I can't see that delaying things as much as you guys are reporting.
Have you guys asked your DS about the delays? They might tell you they don't know but you can ask them to research the issue (i.e. ask the factory what's going on), though from what I understand it takes 5-7 days to get a response back on that.
Jan 20, 2015
andrewket Wow. That's insane.
Jan 20, 2015
3s-a-charm Yes... It's been a long month.
Jan 20, 2015
mrElbe Same insanity here; still waiting for delivery.
Jan 20, 2015
gpetti I'm being a tad more proactive this time around. After my car had been about 4 days I asked my DS for an update and he said it was 'in paint'. A couple of days later I was pushing for information on the type of seat and he told me it was "in paint". When I asked him how long this should take he asked me if I had ever watched paint dry (jokingly) to which I replied "this certainly feels like watching paint dry"Anyway, when the weekend passed and it was still in production I emailed him more aggressively making it clear that I wanted to know what was going on and why I was stuck in production again. Unfortunately my regular DS is away and the fill in guy simply said "it's in production". I wrote him back that I wanted more information but no reply. Perhaps I should have just gone up to the next level but instead I sent an email to Jerome asking to know what was happening - given my previous 24 day production run. He hasn't responded - possibly I've exceeded the nuisance threshold of his email responses.
I will call my usual DS tomorrow.
Jan 21, 2015
jpet My theory is that they are postponing delivery of 85Ds until the torque sleep upgrade is available. We had quite a fuzz about the energy consumption of the P85D and delivering the "most efficient 85D" with the same problem would probably quickly result in too much bad feedback. Given JBs blog post, torque sleep should be ready any day now.
Jan 22, 2015
mrElbe Emerging from the Black Hole and the sun shines brightly. My P85D arrived in Hogtown today. Delivery tomorrow afternoon.
Jan 22, 2015
gpetti Maybe you should live stream the delivery?
Jan 22, 2015
svp6 I think more likely still in limbo with the seats (rear seats different, lots of people complaining about the concept of old seats back with vertical seams vs new front seats with horizontal seams).
Say hello to Fonske
Jan 22, 2015
stevezzzz ^This. After the P85D's rollout, can you imagine the kerfuffle that would result if the S85D was also delivered with less range than the S85/P85?
I've got a trip a week from tomorrow that requires three non-Supercharger charging stops: torque sleep and a corresponding increase in range would be so very welcome in my P85D.
Jan 23, 2015
mrElbe Boy, that black hole has a slippery exit. Was counting the hours today when my DS phoned at 10:00 to give me the news that the GPS on the car has problems and they need to replace a wire.
So, delivery is tentatively now set for Monday the 26th.
Jan 23, 2015
sundoc SO CLOSE!!
Jan 23, 2015
3s-a-charm Ouch! Me too... Tentative for the 27/28 now - first due to logistics getting a transport from From Freemont to Vancouver and now trying to arrange delivery from Vancouver to Calgary.
Feb 5, 2015
gpetti Well I've finally got a P85D in my city. Started October 10th when I ordered based on very little information other than Elon's demonstration. The process is finally complete after nearly 5 months. Here I was thinking this would be a 2 month fast track process! Anyway, I'm glad to make this my final entry here and looking forward to posts raving about how wonderful the car is.
Tracking P85D delivery thread - Page 446
Feb 9, 2015
OConnorStP Hey gpetti, I'm in production! Woohoo! Another Black-Hole/Reorder person is emerging from the tunnel.
Feb 9, 2015
gpetti Awesome - nearly there. I think that you might be the last official BH alumni. You re-ordered due to a paint problem right? As I've mentioned elsewhere it appears that my car had a clear coat issue that they "repaired". I realize that I was soooo not wanting to find any problems that I didn't really inspect the paint work enough. I really couldn't have faced any more delays and in any case my wrap will nullify the remnants of this (or so the wrap place tells me).
- - - Updated - - -
Sorry - my bad, I confused you with Island. You presumably re-ordered for the same reasons I did.
Feb 10, 2015
OConnorStP I reordered because of deep unease about build-quality and a concern that I'd be coping with local repairs/rebuild. 2015 VIN, heated steering wheel and control over what kind of rear seats would be in the car sealed the deal.
Feb 10, 2015
gpetti Right essentially the same as me.
Feb 13, 2015
Thormark People are saying they "reordered". What does that entail? Cancel your orig order and sacrifice the $2500 down? How does that work?
Feb 13, 2015
ElectricTundra @OConnerStP, have you been given a delivery date? I'd guess that ours will leave the factory at the same time, likely between now and Tue and be on the same truck/rail.
Feb 13, 2015
OConnorStP @ElectricTundra - Nathan called and talked about the first week of March, but he's pretty cautious about delivery dates until he sees the car actually ship so nothing more specific than that. I bet you're right, we'll be on the same truck. @Thormark - things got a little dicey there in the Black Hole. People like me were cancelling orders for cars that were already built and caught Tesla by surprise. So some people ate the deposit and some didn't. There was some turbulence, but eventually Tesla rolled my old-S deposit in on top of the deposit for the new-S. I've been rolling deposits forward ($5000 for the cancelled Model X, $2500 for the cancelled Model S, $2500 for the now-nearly-here model S) so I've got $10k on deposit right now.
Feb 15, 2015
Supercharged Perhaps a lesson learned would be to wait a few months to get the kinks out before ordering anything new from any type of manufacturer.
Feb 15, 2015
George Parrott I ordered on the first morning that orders were taken, but set my delivery for January and later changed that when I discovered quickly that only black interiors were going out in the early P85D cars. I delayed to ultimately a February delivery as I demanded only a tan interior option and that was (soon) made available. My car went into "production" on 15 January and finished production around 2 February with shipment to my Rocklin (California) SC on 5 February and delivery to me on 6 February.
It seems many of the P85D cars are taking 10+ days to go through production....much longer than earlier single motor P-series models for reasons that, of course, Tesla will not divulge.
At least all these 2015 build cars are getting everything as ordered out the door rather than require any post-production refitting (e.g. seats replaced). In addition all, repeat ALL, these later January onward builds with ordered Cold Weather Packages are getting the heated steering wheel--even in Central California (I love mine!).
And a big "YES" to Supercharged above...earliest adopters on any assembly line complex product are truly "beta testers" and this appears true with Tesla as well as the older line companies. Reread the early reports of VIN numbers under 2000 with the Pano roof item as one example.
This is my second Model S. I had and just closed the sale on Model S85, VIN 9649 and upgraded to the P85D, VIN 69567, so I am highly enthusiastic about Tesla technology. But this is still reality and not a fantasy world so production engineers and line workers still have "learning curves" even in Fremont.
