dl'd 4.4 (1.31.11) yesterday and installed issue free in afternoon.

seems very stable so far (couple outings), and two things i've noticed since:

    - prior to this (4.3, 4.2 and maybe 4.1 as well, not sure) if i unlocked handsfree, opened door and sat down, the car would wake up when i opened the door but then go back to sleep when i sat and closed the door, and i'd have to step on brake to start the car to wake it. (i don't think it always did this.. cause it doesn't seem right and i remember starting to notice it at some point in the last couple months..) now, however, it is back to staying awake even after door close and no need to step on brake to wake it, only to start it, as it is supposed to work.

    - also, manual suspension height adjustments seem to complete faster than before, although i could be imagining... :)

    fwiw.

Got the alarm clock yesterday, was expecting 4.4, updated and, when I got to car today, it said 4.5!

Haven't had a chance to screen print change log yet, but here's what I like about it:

    * All known bugs fixed, at least all I could find
    * Range seems to be up quite a bit. I drove 100 miles on a normal charge, and still had 210 remaining.
    * The ejector seat function is really cool. My friend wouldn't stop talking, so I pressed it... the pano roof opened and he went flying out. hahahahaha.
    * I also really like the hovercraft option. When rush hour traffic got too bad, I pressed it (right beyond "jack" on suspension height) and was able to rise above the traffic. Seems to use a lot of battery though.

Then I woke up to realize: I only had 4.4. Shucks

I've been on 4.4 for over a week now, and no bugs at all (none on 4.2 either--i jumped from 4.2 to 4.4).

-Has anyone been able to check 120 kW supercharging?

-I've noticed the pano roof opens much faster after you set the open command from the steering wheel control.
-I've noticed that when switching off navigation, the
side of the dash LCD does NOT return to previous setting (it goes blank for me and I have to set it back to Trip or whichever I had it on before)

    - - - Updated - - -

oh also, can anyone with a current meter check if the vampire draw is reduced? on 4.2 it was ridiculously high! ~30 kWh for me, over a month?
  • Apr 17, 2013

I do the same drive every day. I start charging at 9:30 and it usually finshes around 1 am with a slow charge. When I leave in the morning I used to have about 236 miles. This am after 4.4 update I left with 241. I believe the Vampire load has been cured or at least made much better.

That's exactly the behavior it's always had. It sounds like nothing's changed. I generally hit it when I park at my destination and it wants me to drive into the lobby or something to end the route.

Vampire load is unchanged with 4.4 and still quite excessive. Solid 4 - 5 kWh per day over and above driving.

I'm going to post a pre- 4.4 photo and an after 4.4 photo of the rear HD camera, I notice a difference, it's a much wider image!

    All -

In my 10-12 hour overnight period, I used to "loose" about 15 miles in that period of time. Now its down to a pretty consistent 5 miles "lost" for the same period...!

Installed v4.4 (1.31.11) last night but got the message that it had failed to install completely and that I would get a new reminder. However, the handle/locking problem (security module version mis-match) that I had with the v4.3 update came back again; last time around it needed the Service Tech to flash the security module. The temporary fix is to turn off the auto-present and walk-away-lock features but as usual Tampa SC Manager Mark jumped on it and there will be a tech dropping by to take care of it tomorrow morning.

Unfortunately that was my second speeding ticket, it gets old after the first one. I hope to stop at 3! It was the only image I had Pre update. You can see the bottom corners where you see more bumper after 4.4 vs the CHP shot. I noticed a much better blind spot detection with the wider angle.

Something new for me is that every time I do a full standard charge over night it wipes out my media settings.

After the initial upload it had cleared my media settings.

But now, every time I do a standard charge overnight, my media settings get wiped out.

By wiped out, I mean it doesn't remember my last settings, I.e. slacker stations and doesn't play anything.

    Weird.

Nigel, are you 'condemned' to go through this routine with every update from hereon? What is it about your car that causes this? Wonder if Tesla tried to dig deeper when you experienced this with 4.3...
  • Apr 17, 2013
    dtich

i really think you're just seeing a difference in the lighting on your bumper. it looks exactly the same to me. it would be a feat to change the angle of a fixed focal length lens. yes, one version could have been blowing it up a little, but.. i really think it's the same. fwiw.
  • Apr 18, 2013
    NigelM
Tesla didn't dig deeper on my car with v4.3 but I understand that this was one of the issues that led to the rapid release of v4.4. I don't see it as a major bug and Tesla service has been great again, but I figured it's good to let others know. I guess we have to wait for v4.5 to see if it's going to happen every time.

Not sure if this was mentioned yet...
Two more changes I noticed are:
    1. Google Maps now refreshes the whole display when changing from night to day.
    2. Fan speed now responds instantly after selecting.

Headlight preferences are still not stored (maybe intentional they always go back to Auto).

I also do the same drive and charge every day, and I generally see between 239 and 241 (240 most commonly) when I leave. This has been consistent with 4.2, 4.3 and now 4.4.

    - - - Updated - - -

Interesting. I've always had the very wide view since 4.2 (when I got the car). I can actually see a portion of my license plate in the view.

    - - - Updated - - -

I found Auto Present got old fast and turned it off after about 2 days of ownership (I prefer to just tap the handle), but I do use Walk Away Locking. Is this something unique to your car for some reason? I'm wondering if I should turn it back on in my car just to verify everything is okay. I'm inclined to say if it ain't broke, don't mess with it, but on the other hand, I'd like to know if there is something that needs to be seen to.

HD Radio - I think the new version might sometimes be showing meta-data information on song/artist/station and even cover art....but only sometimes. I'm pretty sure I saw this last night listening to regular HD radio (99.9 I think) in my car, but then it seemed to go away. Buggy maybe?
  • Apr 18, 2013
    mknox
I wasn't aware that we had HD radio in Canada. What market are you in? I seem to recall a couple of Toronto market stations tried it out years ago, but abandoned it.

I've had RDS data (mainly in GM cars) for years that'll show Artist and Song (or whatever the station decides to put in the stream - one station gives weather updates), but have never observed an HD signal. One of my past cars would auto adjust it's clock from a time stamp in the RDS signal, but the stupid radio station was always blasting out the wrong time! I called the station engineer who wasn't even aware that in addition to the text data they were sending out a time signal!

Mine is still not refreshing, but I have my map set to show a particular area rather than follow the car. If I don't do something like zoom out and in again, it will never refresh. It will stay in day (or night) more forever. The traffic overlay doesn't refresh either. The zoom out/in trick doesn't always work, due to aggressive caching. So I find myself zooming out (if I remember) as soon as I park. And then when I get back into the car to drive again, I zoom in. The time delay seems to be enough for it to ditch the cache. Also, if it's showing stale, daytime tiles, and it's dark outside, it seems to flush the cache when I zoom out/in with no delay. But if it's showing stale daytime times, and it's actually daytime, zooming out/in with no delay will still display the stale cached tiles.

Aaron I started noticing the same thing even before my update. I think it has to do with the moderation of overnight temperatures for the last few weeks, not the new update.
  • Apr 18, 2013
    tomas
Because so many of these nits are occasional/situational, there's a lot of hopeful but inaccurate 4.4 reporting here:

    1) Map day/night caching issue is NOT fixed. It IS intermittent, so may appear to be fixed for a while, but then you'll get it again.
    2) Energy consumption while parked appears the same. I agree with the poster who says perceived differences could be weather moderation.
    3) There's no difference in the backup camera performance.
    4) The issue of blank left dash screen after navigation is not new (tho some seem to be experiencing for first time), nor is it fixed.

    etc.

My suggestion to all posters: don't post something as a new bug or behavior until you've done a search on it. Don't post something as fixed/changed until you've verified or measured it several times. Whenever we get new releases, we all seem to notice stuff for the first time that may have nothing to do with the release, but rather our perception.

I'm telling you though, the hovercraft suspension setting really IS great, used it again today.

I see a definite difference!! You can see some of the grey portions on the very VERY right corner of the bumper in the second photo and don't see any at all in the first. I know I have the originals on my phone and can see it better then the post on here, but it is DEFINITELY a wider shot.

I thought the ambient light issue required a replacement of the touchscreen. Seems like a simple software upgrade wouldn't do the trick. Have others with 4.4 noticed that the issue has been resolved?
  • Apr 18, 2013
    DriverOne
Maybe they took so long rolling out different 4.3 versions that their upgrade system lost track of who had what. So they forced out an identical 4.4 just to ensure everyone got upgraded. Just a version number bump.

  • Apr 18, 2013
    NigelM
It wasn't unique to my car on v4.3, but I haven't heard of anyone else having the same issue repeated on v4.4. The cause is a little vague although it seems related to consecutive updates that did not install completely. The Ranger did have conversations with engineers in CA so although it's impossible to say that it didn't happen anywhere else, it does seem like it is a pretty rare occurrence In any case there is a fix and it looks like a complete hardwire reloading of the firmware has done the trick.

(A shout out to Aaron from Tampa service who was here today working on the car - always pleasant and cheerful, works hard to get things right.)

The main thing I noticed after 4.4 was my top pet peeve was fixed: Prior to 4.4 there was only 3 lines of music info on the big 17 inch screen but the little display on the dash gave you all 4 lines of information. I was really annoyed when listening to slacker and the name of the song was not displayed (For example if playing Comfortably Numb it would say "Pink Floyd Radio, The Wall, Pink Floyd" on 3 lines on the 17" screen but on the smaller screen you'd get "Pink Floyd Radio, Comfortably Numb, The Wall, Pink Floyd" on 4 lines of info.

I'm very happy to see this fixed with 4.4

    - - - Updated - - -

I know I saw it in December and I haven't seen it since before March. I'm on 4.4 and it's still absent for me.

    - - - Updated - - -

Not fixed in my car with 4.4 but there's an interesting twist. Elaborating...

    1. Enter the car and close door.
    2. Turn off Climate Control.
    3. Ambient lights are on at full brightness.
    RESULT: No buzz.
    4. Set to the Displays to Night Mode explicitly (i.e. not Auto).
    5. Set Night Mode brightness to 0%.
    6. Observe the Ambient button is not lit active (i.e. it's gray not blue).
    7. Tap the Ambient button (activate).
RESULT: Ambient lights dim somewhat and buzz occurs.
    8. Tap the Ambient button again (deactivate).
RESULT: Ambient lights at full and no buzz.
    9. Repeat steps 7-8 a few times to observe the behavior.
    10. Wait for car to "complete entry and seating process" (i.e. wait for timeout).
    RESULT: Ambient lights turn off.

Dear Tesla, please make the behavior after step 7 the same as the behavior after step 8. I don't need "dimmable ambients"; I just want quiet ambients.

Had an interesting thing happen today. I had not opened my rear hatch since I got 4.4.

Walked up to back of car and opened the hatch. It opened normally.
Pushed the button to close it and it beeped at me, 2 or 3 times.
    Tried fob, no joy.
Got into car and and used screen with car off. No joy.
Stepped on brake and used the screen. Hatch closed.
Opened hatch again and it would not close.
Finally rebooted center console and that fixed the problem.

This amazing car is a collection of computerized subsystems that communicate on a high speed bus. If one of those subsystems get out of sync, things ,like this can happen. When the control computer reboots, it resets all of the subsystems to a known startup state.

One improvement I have noticed on V4.4 is that the Google map night mode bug is gone. Now when the car switches to day mode, the screen refreshes.

And it appears to me that the way the buzz in the map lights was fixed is that those lights do not dim along with the display any more.

It seems to me that Tesla does not have the hardware consistency to guarantee universal software fixes. This is rather typical. In my career, I have had many instances where hardware vendors chanced specs which brought about unexpected software issues. etc.

Well, sort of. I have been on 4.4 for about a week and 2 days ago I was trying to show my wife how to reboot the 17 inch screen by holding down the 2 wheels and all sorts of strange stuff happened. First the 17" screen went dark (as expected) but it did not come back on. After waiting at least 30 seconds the steering wheel screen also went dark. I drove along for about a minute with both screens off before I touched the 17" screen and it instantly came back on. The steering wheel screen then rebooted with the Tesla T logo appearing for a while before returning to normal.

I'm now on 4.4. Today did a range charge at home before a day road trip. I didn't have time to do a complete range charge, but for the first time the rated miles on my 60 kWh exceed 197. I actually showed 203 and I still had a ways to go before completing the charge but I ran out of time. I wonder if 4.4 finally fixed this bug in the 60s.

Not really. I usually just press down on the accelerator a bit before disengaging the cruise to avoid the sudden deceleration. I used to do the same on my ICE cars, but find it a bit more crucial with the Model S due to it's re-gen capabilities.
  • Apr 22, 2013
    SFOTurtle
Not a statistical issue. The issue is that there was a known bug in the 60s that prevented it from showing any rated miles above 197 even when doing a range charge even when the battery continued to charge. I wonder if anyone who has a 60 previously saw any number higher than 197 before 4.4.
  • Apr 22, 2013
    gg_got_a_tesla
Nope; all 60s, as reported here, were maxing out at 197 whatever be the ambient conditions and the charging source. Good to hear that it's been fixed in 4.4.
  • Apr 22, 2013
    SFOTurtle
I hope so, although this wasn't a bug that was high on my priority list. I am curious if any other folks with 60s had tried range charging since the 4.4 rollout and seen higher numbers than 197. I most certainly wasn't trying to suggest that we were actually seeing any better range from the battery. It was just the first time I'd ever seen a rated miles reading of north of 197.

I think you're confusing HD Radio and RDS data displays.

HD Radio is digital broadcast radio, specs adopted by the FCC in 2002 (and I have no idea if the CRTC ever adopted it or any alternate standard). Its been optional on some cars for ~5-6 years, and only now starting to become a bit more common...

RDS is an add-on to "regular" FM analog radio signals that gives info avail for display on the car radio (most commonly track titles). RDS was first introduced in Europe in the 80s, and made its way to North America in the 90s, although didn't become common until the 2000s (I had a 2001 BMW that could display it...)...

Two things since the update. First, I have had the doors present without unlocking twice. I had to use the keyfob to unlock. Never happened before update. Second, the car failed to stop. It claimed I had both pedals depressed and I most certainly did not. A bit unnerving. Only problem prior to this (on 4.2) was a switch into neutral after driving a few hundred feet. I also seem to have more difficulties with Bluetooth connectivity than before.

Did you do a reboot after the update? Not sure if that would solve the issues. But can't hurt. I agree that would be scary.

I wonder if it is just good practice to always do a reboot after any updates?

Seems like a logical thing to do.

No, I get the difference... I just didn't think we had any stations broadcasting in HD in the Toronto market. Turns out notailpipe2112 was correct and 95.3 CING is broadcasting in HD. Toronto had a few stations years ago that piloted HD, but abandoned it. I went up and down the dial, and that is the only station left in my market still broadcasting in HD.

I noted that this HD station gives me station name, song title, album art etc., but none of my other FM stations do. HD must send this data out in a different format than RDS. My past two cars have supported RDS data, and pretty much every FM station gave me station name, song info etc. and it was really handy. I'm not sure why the Model S doesn't support RDS since they have all that screen real estate to present the information.

(I'll try to dig up my old post later to link it in but...)

With 4.3, I didn't have song titles on the 17" for Slacker. With initial 4.4, I didn't either. Yesterday I played music from my USB for over an hour and left it paused on a USB song overnight. Today, I switched back to slacker to the same favorite'd station I was previously playing. Now the Slacker song titles show up for me on the 17".

Lots of interesting ideas about how Slacker binaries in the Tesla behave when "inactive" and how updates interact.

I agree. My kids noticed right away that this data was missing from regular stations like Q107 or Kiss92, like in our old Volvo, but the Tesla doesn't seem to have it yet. I expect that a future software update will cover it off. The kids need it so they can stay on top of who is making the latest sounds.

What I do is use Tunin Radio instead. You can select radio stations by Country, State/Province and City. Most, if not all of the stations are there, and when you do it this way, you get the equivalent of RDS data plus album art. Also, you don't have to worry about driving beyond the range of the station (as long as you have a 3G connection). Further, you can go on line and set up a free account to save your favorites. When you log on in the Model S, everything's there!

    - - - Updated - - -

To re-boot, you have to hold both scroll wheel buttons down for a few seconds until the screen goes dark. It'll then re-start much like when you re-boot a PC. (I assume what you meant above was that you just turned the car off and on).

    Version 4.4 problems

Sadly 4,4 had been the only disaster update for me thu far. Door handles no longer retract, and when they attempt to do so the do it unevenly then immediate pop back out. Can't drive the car in public like this - it's basically screaming "hey come open me up, look around, take whatever you need."
What is frustrating is its been in the service center for 24+ hours to address this problem and was told this this problem was resolved. Evidently not as its doing the same crap upon arrival to my home. AAAAArrrrrgggghhhh!!!!!!!

Sorry to hear that, but something isn't right. I had the same issue. Drove to my SC and they reinstalled the update on the spot.

First: The simple fix is to turn off the auto-present and walkaway-lock options so that you can use the car normally.

Sounds exactly the same as the issue I and a few others had with v4.3/4.4. It's a version mismatch on the security module and arises from an incomplete installation of the firmware version. Get the service center to pull the security module fuses and reload the firmware. This has been treated in my case as a warranty issue and supported with free ranger service so it shouldn't need your car sitting at the SC for 24+ hours. Worst case scenario is that the BCU needs replacing and that's a reasonably quick job for a Ranger when he has the part available.

I've talked to service twice and they're stumped as to why my reverse camera isn't working.

I also lost my odometer. According to the rep they could see it counting up on their side so it's still tracking, but the section is blank we're it used to show.

I really don't understand how/why there is such variability in what is a closed system. It's not like we are all running different operating systems or something.

PLEASE CONFIRM WHETHER YOU HAVE REBOOTED BOTH SCREENS. (hold in both scroll wheels until center console blanks, both top buttons until dash blanks) These sound like symptoms that have happened to many in past and are solved by a reboot. I've had the odometer issue, cleared up by reboot.

Good point. I've wondered the same thing. I have yet (knock on wood) to experience any issues after a software update. This all makes me wonder why others that have the exact same piece of hardware as me experience these issues. Is it caused by certain settings defined in the system or a corrupt firmware file? I don't know enough about software development to continue speculating but maybe others can comment on exactly what causes these issues.

@notailpipe and mknox, my daughters use a free iPhone app that tells them all RDS type data ie song name and artist in a few seconds. This info is then recorded in case they want to buy.

I believe you're referring to Shazam. It is pretty amazing how it can "listen" to a few seconds of a song and come back with name, artist etc. like that.

The Model S has multiple subsystems each of which is running an independent operating system. (Don't think of it as a computer, think of it as a network of computers.) An awful lot of trouble seems to have been caused by partial updates, where for some reason not all of the subsystems updated. This points to bugs in the updater software.

Interesting. I would have speculated that they were flashing the entire system every time as apposed to delta updates. Which can be unpredictable.

Yes - I have reported both screens.

Support was able to get into my car last night and determined that the firmware caused something in the video controller to go nuts. They were able to fix it remotely.

While an odd error - I'm VERY happy that they could fix it remote. Especially since I live 2.5 hours from the closets service center.

Yesterday, the Google map hung trying to update - and the central console became very slow to respond (seconds to bring up the "settings" window) - this happened while I was driving and the car was in motion. At the same time, the A/C was cycling on-and-off.

I rebooted the central console by holding down both of the scroll wheels. The console display went black - but the reboot didn't start (no large Tesla T). Then a few seconds later, the dashboard display went black. The A/C was off - but the car was still operational. While somewhat disconcerting to be driving with both displays out - the car was still able to operate.

Called Tesla Assistance and pulled into a parking lot. What cleared the problem was to put the car and open the door (since I did both of these quickly - it's possible that only one of these steps cleared the problem). Both displays came up instantly - and I drove off without any more problems.

Tesla Assistance made a note of the problem - and for the Service Center to take a look on Friday, when I'm already scheduled for service (spoiler's ready to be installed!).

I suspect this problem is a software bug - and not a problem with my car - and hopefully Tesla has enough logs that they can find what caused this - and fix it in an update.

Just took the update yesterday, and when I woke up in the morning to drive, I was only charged to 150 miles rated, and the display showed 15amp max. I know 100% it was set at 40amp max when I left it. So, figuring it was a fluke, I watched it more closely last night. Plugged it in when I got home and showed charging at 40amps no problem. However, an hour later, I checked my app, and it showed it was now set to 33amp max!

    Anyone else seeing this?

If it doesn't have a good connection to the port it will charge at 16A. That may have been it.

I'm an hour from the service center but Tesla has not been reluctant to send a Ranger for the couple of small issues I had with FW updates. It's a arguably still warranty but I wonder what the future position will be if the car is a couple of years old and a FW update causes an issue? I guess the updates are generally getting better each time anyway....

Confirmed a few things after the v4.4 download on my S60:
    1. Range: have 204 miles now as opposed to 196 miles under v4.2 and v4.3
    2. Camera: saw the edge of my rear bumper which I didn't notice before. I put a 4" flower pot very closed to the bumper and still can see the pot clearly, like it.
    3. Wiper: Have the courtesy wipe only once and never saw again, not sure why.
    4. Regen Brake: didn't feel the "gentle transition" other owners saw.

I wish Tesla programmers can document the "Release Notes", they may too busy doing that.

Thanks for the data point. This past Sunday mine had charged to 203 but I didn't complete the range charge because I needed to leave so I don't know if it would have topped out at 204. Previously my max range charges had topped out at 197 like many other 60s.

After reboot of both screens, I can confirm I no longer have any form of voice command functionality with 4.4. I used to be able to call up a song on Slacker but not anymore. Non-tech package. Anyone else with non-tech notice?

The standard range seem to be 85 % of the baterrie instead of 80% on 4.4. I got 397km this morning when I usually had 377Km. Is it good for the batterie long term management?

Anybody else with an HTC Thunderbolt phone? Bluetooth connection to car was working fine with my HTC Thunderbolt for 4 months, right up until I updated to 4.4 last weekend. Then nothing. I can no longer connect the phone to the car via bluetooth and use the dialer on the infotainment screen. Contacts and recent calls are no longer displayed on the infotainment screen, and the car no longer plays music that's on the phone (via Bluetooth). So thinking it was the phone, Verizon gave me a different HTC Thunderbolt to try. No luck with that one either. I tried an iPhone and a couple other Android phones and they seem to work fine. But the HTC Thunderbolts that used to work before the 4.4 update, no longer work.

Worst part about it is that I didn't even need the scheduled charging feature in 4.4, so I delayed doing the update. Now this.

Mine has always been 90% on my 85 kW pack. I get between 239 and 242 miles on a "Standard" charge. 239 is exactly 90% of the EPA rated 265 miles.

"Ext. Cord Used or Weak Power" - Charge Speed Reduced: from 110V outlet?

Been seeing this since I moved up to 4.4 from the same 110V outlets as before (at work). Not a big deal but, anyone else seeing this?

Doesn't seem to actually impact the charging rate as it gets up to 3 mi/hr shortly after:
