Yup - I was just jumped straight from 4.2 to 4.4 (1.31.11). It popped up release notes, but they looked like 4.3 release notes - just talking about scheduled charging and cold-weather range estimation.

Is the mirror auto-tilt function back? I lost that, and presumably the Dolby surround option (not an important one to me), with the 4.3 (1.25.45) update.
  • Apr 12, 2013

Given how quickly this arrived after 4.3, I'm guessing a bug fix or two created by 4.3.

    Hey Jeff,

You shouldn't have lost mirror auto-tilt. I have noticed that during some of the updates the saved setting is lost, so you have to reset where you want them to go in reverse and save that setting to your profile.

Wow, WTF. I called service wednesday regarding the update. Thursday at 2am I got the upgrade to 4.3, and within 24hrs I'm already obsolete

There are quite a few of us that lost auto-tilt mirror option with 4.3 (or 1.19.49). Tesla is aware of the problem, and wants specific VINs if you haven't reported it to them yet. It is a bug they are trying to track down. It seems that it only affected cloth seats people.

Now we are moving from RANGE ANXIETY to RELEASE ANXIETY. I've got this dream... a dream that a forum thread on a new software release has useful posts on what's changed and what's not. A dream that the thread is not 90% "I didn't get it yet", "why didn't I get it yet?", "it's not fair I didn't get it yet!", "Should I be worried I didn't get it yet?". Well, I can dream, can't I?

    Anyhow, answers to questions:

    * You didn't get it yet because Tesla releases slowly. It can take over 30 days to update everyone. Nobody knows the sequence, but it's not VIN related. It may be random, or it may be "smart" prompted by telemetry info.
    * You shouldn't be worried you didn't get it yet. Just enjoy the experience of driving the best car on earth. By the time you get it - thx to forum and between the riff-raff messages, you should know what's in it and what's not.

Two changes I noticed on the way to lunch:

    - Song title is working again on slacker
    - Web browser no longer has a home page setting

Otherwise very similar to 4.2. Haven't tried timed charging yet (hope it plays nice with my custom charge timer)

the release notes seem to be the tip of the iceberg. seems like there are always lots of little things to be discovered. my guess is that in reality the updates are rolling continuously with releases being put out in waves and little fixes added even within a release period with no explanation as issues are reported then fixed.

Uh-oh, this sounds like a driver profile related issue. I have the textile seats under the old pricing model so heated seats or driver profiles :-( I think the profiles should be grandfathered to those with Tech package, please Tesla?
  • Apr 12, 2013
    ElSupreme
This is my speculation. Tesla moved auto-tilt to profiles, which are not available to cloth seat people. And 4.3 (really 4.2 above 1.19.45) broke this. I am not sure it is affecting all cloth seat people, but the only people who seem to have this problem are cloth seat people.

I really hope they give me profiles (I have the Tech package). I know seat memory won't come but it would be nice to have mirror settings and other drive settings programmed for myself.

There are a couple of minor timing differences that I've noticed versus my previous 4.2.

First, the scroll wheel controls to open the sunroof are now much faster and responsive. This is good.

Second, the handle present time seems to be delayed a bit. This is bad. I haven't done enough testing yet if it's the timing or the detection range, but approaching the car from the back used to reliably present the handles before I reached them - now I have to wait half a second or so. Certainly not a big deal, but since it was just about perfect for me before, I wonder why the change.

The hidden downside to a car that's always getting better...it's also always changing! Can you imagine in a normal car getting in and one day the A/C fan knob has been switched with the radio volume knob, but the button for the left rear passenger power window has just disappeared completely, only to return 3 days later. It's an odd, odd world that we early adopters live in...
  • Apr 12, 2013
    Banahogg
There's never been a button, but there was a setting which, as far as anyone could tell (Web Browser Home Page) only worked the first time you loaded the browser after you got the car. That setting appears to be gone.

My song titles had been broken for a couple of weeks (figured it was a server protocol problem where they didn't version the server properly across firmware versions). I remember someone else mentioning it in a thread, but I can't find the reference after a couple searches.

I had my first problem with my car yesterday. The front passenger door popped open when I pushed the park button. When I called Tesla service, I told them about the problem and also said I'm running the latest (.45) version of the 4.3 firmware. He said he's pretty sure it's a software problem, so they're going to give me an update in addition to inspecting the hardware at the service center.

Pretty funny. Could it be that so many owners were afraid of 4.3 (and didn't update), that Tesla has just renamed the latest 4.3 release as 4.4?
  • Apr 12, 2013

I had the driver's side back door pop open when the handles extended after the 4.3 update. It happened one time and then never again so I wrote it off as a fluke.

    - - - Updated - - -

Is there a way to permanently defer or skip updates? I dismissed the notification when I saw it on my screen in the morning, but I got the impression that it was going to install at 2AM the next day whether I liked it or not.

The function just needed to be resaved for me on 4.3, iirc

I had the problem with the reverse mirrors. Option totally disappeared. Service fixed it in a couple of minutes. I have cloth sets.

New problem with 1.25.45. Passenger door would not open after handles extended. Will try a reboot of the console.

I also may have found another bug. While packing the car for a tip today, I put the car in neutral and set the brake so I could listen to music.

After I closed the door, the handles retracted and I could not open the doors again. The fob didn't work when I approached, double clicking the fob roof didn't work. Thank goodness I had the window rolled down. I think I was locked out. Anyone else seen this problem?

Received v4.4 (1.31.11) today sometime around 2:30 PM PST. No changes pointed out in release notes aside from scheduled charging. Mirror tilt isn't available still for me. As I sit here in the car typing this, the handles presented and retracted several times separated by a couple minutes.

Both mirrors auto-tilt on mine. They did in 4.2, no change in 4.3, don't have 4.4. You need to set the mirror that's not tilting when you are in reverse. Some folks have reported that the tilt goes away sometimes. (I never had this happen to me, only read about it.)

Mine auto-tilted in 4.1... not exactly a new feature. Sounds like 4.4 is bug fixes?
  • Apr 13, 2013
    mknox
I never really cared for auto-tilt mirrors (had them on my past two cars) and found another reason this past week that made me glad I didn't have them turned on: We had heavy freezing rain, and my mirrors both had about 1/4" of ice on them. One thing that does work well is the heated mirror feature. I turned on the rear defroster and the mirrors melted all the ice off in no time. Problem is, the water ran down and into the housing, then re-froze solid. I had giant icicles hanging down from them. There's no way the glass was going to budge, and I think if they had tried to "auto tilt" when I backed out, it wouldn't have been good for the motors and mechanism in there.
  • Apr 13, 2013

That's a design flaw. Next time take a pic and report it.

I updated from 4.3 to 4.4 (1.31.11) this evening. Release notes looks exactly like those for 4.3. Nothing other than scheduled charging specified in the notes.
  • Apr 14, 2013
    mknox
I don't really think it's a design flaw. The melted ice had to go somewhere and re-freeze. I have had this experience with heated mirrors and heated glass, for that matter, on many cars. A bigger design "deficiency" in my mind is how the wipers can't be lifted off the glass due to the way they tuck under the hood. When that area gets jammed up with snow/ice, it's a pain to get it cleared out.

I know on Audis when the car is off you can manually "wipe" the wipers up the windscreen so that you can then fold them outwards away from the car for cleaning etc like traditional wipers. Similarly with the ignition on there is a setting to put the wipers in "service" mode and they jump to half way across the screen. Are the model S wipers "locked" in place when the car is off? Hopefully not otherwise that is a little annoying...
  • Apr 15, 2013
    mknox
Sorry, I jumped off topic by mentioning this. There is a whole thread on wiper issues, but the short answer is no, there is no facility to stop the wipers part way, and even if you could, the hinge point may still be too far below the hood lip to allow tilting them fully up.
  • Apr 15, 2013

I've noticed, when cleaning my car -- which I do way too often, that water does pool up at the bottom of the side rear-view mirror housings. I find myself having to rinse out the housings really well to get rid of all the sudsy water... So maybe they could do a quick re-design which puts more of an incline in the bottom of that housing to make sure it empties out nicely. Sorry for being OT.

  • Apr 15, 2013
    mknox
Wouldn't really help in sub-freezing temperatures (water would re-freeze until you just had a big icicle hanging from that hole! When my side mirrors were covered in 1/4" of ice due to the freezing rain, I was glad to have the heat feature clear them so I could see, even though the water froze around the edges and "locked" the mirror in place. Once it warmed up, the ice melted and all was good. As I say, I've experienced this on just about every car I've had with heated mirrors when the ice builds up enough.

What I find interesting is comments like this. I have not had that problem at all on either 4.2 or 4.3, yet I have had different problems that others have not, which have been "fixed" by updates. What is going on that some people can have problems while others don't, and software updates can fix some people's issues while "breaking" things for others. Are the cars that different? Are there different hardware components from car to car? I've had 4.4 ready to go for a few days now, but have been hesitant to pull the trigger until I see what others have to say.
  • Apr 16, 2013
    tomas
I've religiously read software update threads because I also want to be educated prior to upgrade.

From seeing all of the posts, I have to say that about 90% of the "anomalies" are noise and misperception. By far the most are from people noticing a behavior for the first time, and assuming it came with new release. Also a lot from people not knowing how to reset backup mirror settings, for example. And yet more from people being updated more than one release at a time (say, 4.1 to 4.3) and creating confusion about what came with what release.

There are FEW real software anomalies. MOST of the legit software anomalies (things that actually cropped up from installing a new release) seem to come from interaction of other system components (e.g., sensors) and the computer. E.G., door handles now not auto presenting, etc. This makes sense. A software tolerance changes, and now a few people whose climate or specific construction causes more friction are affected. Then, there are some that are config related. E.G., Tesla removing auto tilt mirror option from cars with cloth seats - Tesla changed software consistent with today's configuration options, but forgot to grandfather earlier allowable configurations. Then there are a VERY FEW unexplained. E.G., the charging issue that some of my IL brethren experienced with 4.3.

If you are one of the first to get a new release, you are wise to watch forum for a while before deciding to take upgrade. I did that with 4.3 because the charging problems were in IL and I'm in IL. If you see dozens of people reporting the release without catastrophe, DON'T BE SCARED, just go with it.

    gregincal
Well, since you got it, the rollout must be fast. Somebody made that same comment about 4.3 when they happened to be one who got it in the first couple days, but some people are still on 4.2 weeks later.

I just got 4.4 and I can finally contribute to this thread on topic. I had 4.2 up until 7 days ago, then I had 4.3 for a week, and I've had 4.4 for 1.5 days.

When I upgraded to 4.3, I noticed that my HomeLink range had decreased, but I didn't attribute it to the firmware upgrade, I figured it was something with my gate. But since upgrading to 4.4, my HomeLink range is back to where it was with 4.2. As a result, I can only conclude that 4.3 somehow (and I can't explain how) decreased the HomeLink range.

Sadly, I am still suffering from poor bluetooth streaming... that hasn't been fixed yet.

Upgraded from 4.3 -> 4.4 a few days ago. Notes of interest:

    - the energy screen zoom (5/15/30) is now sticky. It now remembers the zoom level. IIRC, 4.3 always defaulted to 5 miles. Instant/Average still always defaults to Instant tho.

    - Left side driver display now goes blank after navigation. Never had this happen under 4.3. Need to test again to see if this was just a fluke.

Well now with the P85 loaners, I sure as hell will be fearless (not that I haven't installed as soon I have stopped the car after getting the notice of an update every time so far). Hoping for a day with a little bit more pep in my drive to work!

Yup. That's why I posted it. Just reconfirmed that the left side display does not go back to media after navigation. I will try a driver and center console reset to see if it clears the issue.

My car has always had this problem with the left display blank after a navigation. My car had 4.2 when it left the factory.

Got the update to 4.4 this morning.

Remote app works fine for me with 4.4 installed.

I just get the message for the upgrade this Morning. Scheduled the upgrade for the time it rests at the parking lot. I guess it is upgraded when I will be back pick it up. So far I can still connect the iPhone (finds the car) and even I started the air condition and the temp goes down. Looks good to me.

I restarted the app and it was fixed.

You are correct. Service told me to uninstall and reinstall the app. Restarting it was all that was required.

OK. I think I have isolated the issue with the nav screen on the driver console. I reset both consoles at the beginning to have a good starting point.

IF you enter a nav address, then enroute you decide to stop for, say, coffee, the car will shut off. When you re-enter the car, the nav screen will appear and you continue on to you destination. Once there, or cancel the nav, the driver nav screen will disappear and the media screen (or whatever you had set) will not reappear. Behavior is reproducable.

IF you complete your route or cancel the nav without the car turning off, then all works as it should.

At least this is what it is doing in my car with 4.4

    Your miliage may vary

That is an old bug and I also can confirm that it is not fixed with 4.4

I received the 4.4 update notice the morning, I delayed it and after it was parked in my garage at home, I did the "update now", lots of clicking and whirring as usual, and it eventually was done... The google maps and app connectivity didn't work immediately, but by the time I was inside my house, the iPhone app was able to connect, looks exactly the same as 4.3, I wonder what is fixed/different in this release?

I've noticed that after an update, it takes a while for the 3G and Bluetooth to come back to life. Seems to be normal behavior.

I see the same behavior. If that was the way it was before 4.4 then nothing is fixed. I thought the screen was always blanked regardless of whether the car was turned off en-route. In that case it's still only half fixed in my mind. Either way, it NOT entirely fixed as I had reported before.

That's what's happening to me. Noticed this after 4.4. Not sure if it was happening with 4.3.

Have been off the forums for a few days (parents are in town) but got the notice to update today. Installed w/ no problems. Was dismayed to read the release notes and see that they're the same as 4.3 so I came to this thread to see if anyone had any insight. Seems like just bug fixes as I figured. Didn't have any bugs w/ 4.3 but newer is better right!?

Has anyone really figured out what bugs in 4.3 they fixed with 4.4?

Got scared as hell last night with the V4.4 install. My car came with 4.2 so I had no lived through an update yet.

Instead of letting it install at 2am, I decided late last night to trigger the "install now" button
Pressed it, then a 2 min countdown window appeared
After 2 min, lots of clicks, lights closing and... a red warning banner at the top of the 17inch display: "Car needs service, call Tesla Roadside assistance"
Then the red banner disappeared and was replaced by a "Car needs Service" on the odometer display
I went to bed and came back this morning with Upgrade succeeded and the Release notes....

    Is that normal?

Pat, I watched the first few minutes of my 4.4 upgrade too just for fun, and I got the same messages. I'm sure it's completely normal as certain key systems shut down and get upgraded bit by bit. No worries. :)

Yes it is normal. During the updates the car does a lot of weird things. A lot of sounds and clicks and lights and messages. Everyone has the same reaction as you the first update. I've had 3 I think and now it's no big deal. I just press update and let it go like I'm doijg nothing more complicated than updating an iPhone app :)
