Ended: $2K Off Instead Of $1K From Current VA & OH Owners, Confirmed part 1

    From Telsa to Ohio owners:
    "August 28, 2015
Various states have laws that were enacted to prevent rogue car salespeople. You can imagine an era when legislators were concerned about stereotypical car salesmen trying to sell cars without a license. At Tesla, we sell our cars differently. We dont use traditional car dealers let alone rogue salespeople. However, our Referral Program has struck a chord with Ohio regulators, who have claimed that aspects of it do not comply with this type of law.
Our Referral Program was never designed to make you a salesperson. Nevertheless, due to the position taken by Ohio regulators, we are making one change to our Referral Program for our customers in Ohio. Now, when someone buys a new Model S through your referral link, the $1,000 credit that you were to receive in your Tesla account will instead go to the person receiving the referral. That person will now get $2,000 (instead of $1,000) off the purchase price. The program otherwise remains as described in Elons email to you.
    Our apologies for this change.

After multiple calls with Tesla Sales in HQ, as well as the store in Tyson's Corner VA, I've learned the following:

    • This is all about not directly compensating current owners in these states from being direct salespeople. It doesn't matter where the new buyer is, they can take advantage of the extra $1000 off that was supposed to go to the current owner
    • The new buyer will only see $1000 off initially, using a referral code from a Virginia or Ohio owner. This is because the owner's credit is not realized until the buyer's deposit becomes non-refundable
    • The new buyer and their DS must work with Tesla HQ to manually map over the extra discount. Once this is done, the discount will appear on the Motor Vehicle Purchase Agreement before you complete delivery
    • What does the VA and OH owner see? As referrals get confirmed, they temporarily see their 'credit' go up $1000, but once it gets mapped out, the credit goes down again. I have seen this with three referrals who used my code already
    • Does the VA and OH owner get anything? Mostly the satisfaction of knowing they helped someone get into the best car on the road today. It seems that Tesla's opinion that the other prizes, the free installed Powerall and Gigafactory opening tix at 5 referrals, and the discount on a new Model X at 10, do not represent a per referral compensation, so that the VA and OH owners are still eligible for them, but this has not been made clear. I may be the first VA owner to have hit five referrals, so I'll keep everyone posted
My point of view on the whole referral process is that if you are a new Model S buyer and know a friend who's a current owner, use their code, that way you both get something out of it. But if you're a new buyer, and don't have a particular referral code to use, seek out a VA or OH current owner, and get $2000 off instead of $1000. It's a little extra work, but it's money that stays in your pocket.

That is pretty awesome!! I'm looking at getting a 70D, hopefully in the next month or so. My question about this is, Does it only apply to buying or does it count towards leasing as well?

    Thanks

I haven't spent much time learning about the referral program -guess that's actually a good thing since it's now changed for me as an OH owner. Can anyone help me with a couple of questions?

    - What's the feeling on posting your code and having your "friend" be a new friend - is this generally viewed as ethical and cool with Tesla?
    - So I now have $20k worth of referral discounts to offer. I'd love to share them freely and let buyers get the full $2k...and I'd love to find a new friend who is planning to buy and get after-market wheels asap....and who would consider offering me a REALLY good deal on their factory 19" wheels and tires. Any ideas where I should post this idea other than here?

I live in VA and will happily share a referral link if you ask me. I feel kinda uneasy about making money of referring someone, so this works out nicely for me as well.

Relative to Tesla, a sale is a sale. They are giving $2000 for each referral, so if its split between owner and buyer or if all $2000 goes to the buyer, it's all the same.

    - - - Updated - - -

@blanche, I agree with you that I'm good with not getting the referral money, so if others can benefit with the extra $1000, that's fine by me. However, it's still not 100% clear if we get the prizes at 5 and 10 referrals. I'm at 5 now so I'll post info once I know.

Am getting this from my Tesla advisor:
So me being in CA means I do not get the double credit. Was not aware of that distinction. Man, might have to take the pano roof off before I confirm tonight.

That is the same information I've been told (repeatedly, now). I was caught in the middle of the double credit thing, too, and was told a lot of varying things by different people. In the end the answer is you cannot get the double credit unless you purchase and register in OH or VA. That sucks if it means you can't get the pano roof! :(

There's a ton of misinformation being spread around the internet about this, mostly due to the poor wording in the original email.

I was told the exact same thing a couple of weeks back when I ordered. The DS exact words were "Regarding the referral credit, both you and your referrer will be receiving the 1,000 credit."
So according to him, the other $1k goes to the resident of the state.
  • Sep 16, 2015

This is not true. I just finished purchasing a 85D. The car was purchased/registered in Michigan and I was very easily and successfully able to use a VA referral code and got the full $2000 off. Admittedly, I was fairly persistent in emailing both my Tesla store and my DS to make sure I was going to get the full $2000 off. Yet again, they had maintained all along that I would indeed get the full $2000 off. Its just that I had read so many conflicting posts on this forum that I kept checking with them. Do note that when you place the order, the paperwork in "My Tesla" only shows the $1000 off. However, once the car completes production and you are in the process of working with your DS in setting up delivery and arranging the payment, the final paperwork from Tesla will correctly indicate the full $2000 discount/credit.

Yes, please can you share more details? My DS said it was not possible. Maybe you can share the name of your Sales person or DS so that they can explain how the process can work to another Sales / DS person...

After reading this thread, then OverZealous' post, and being turned down by my sales rep, I figured that was it, 1000$ only from my VA referring friend.
Then I read 85downer's post, I figured I'd take another shot at it.

So: I got my VA friend to forward me the August 6th letter (see OP) and the original referral program launch one.
I then proceeded to push back on my Tesla rep, providing those letters as supporting documentation.
She "talked to corporate" and they decided to honor the 2000$ referral rebate for me.

Moral of the story? The language is vague in the Tesla letters, and nowhere does it say that you must register the car in VA or OH. Push back, you should be able to get it if you are documented and polite.

OK, I didn't want to say anything right away, because I'm worried they're going to change their minds yet again, but my D.S. is awesome and kept looking into it without me prompting further, and he was able to get me the doubled referral bonus as well. He notified me of this earlier this week.

I have been told that it wasn't possible in some form or another at least 3 times so far, from 2 different people. I have also been told it is possible from 2 different people!

I was polite the whole time, and I let it go after the bit of a fiasco a week ago. He just went above-and-beyond to ask around, and was able to get the discount applied. I have it listed on my final MVPA, and it's showing up in the My Tesla section. Great timing, too, since it looks like I will be getting my MS scheduled to be delivered next Thursday!

Honestly, I'm still nervous posting this, like they might take it away again! :crying:

The issue is max amp used a referral code already. I understand Tesla's position on this. They don't want to have to deduct the credit already given to the person who referred max amp. That would set a bad precedent.

Most other people are trying to use a code after submitting an order. A completely different animal.

@andrewket - you make a good point. I don't think I will pitch a fit since you are right, I had already had a referral in the system. I still think it really doesn't matter if I had a credit but I can understand both sides of the argument.

I have been reading through the forum since a month and all the information gained has really helped me narrow down the things I want. This forum has answered so many questions and removed many doubts that I had about Tesla.

I am located in Maryland and am interested in a 70D. I have made contact with the local store here and am supposed to get the inventory list tomorrow. If nothing from the inventory matches my needs, I will order before the end of October to take advantage of the referral credit.

Has anybody from Maryland taken advantage of the double referral bonus with a Virginia referral code?
If so, please let me know the details of the specialist who has helped you.

Hi, new here, looking at getting a 90D, was waiting for the X release yesterday just to make sure they wouldn't change anything major with the S model lineup that I would miss out on by ordering earlier. Now that that doesn't seem to have happened, I'm getting ready to "pull the trigger"

Just found out about the VA referral code program, have not talked to anyone locally at Tesla yet (in phoenix, AZ). Wondering if I can be "friends" with any of you VA folks and use your referral code. It seems like I should have all the pertinent info before heading over to the Tesla store to place my order.

For everyone who is looking to get the $2K, just make sure you have all the information of the "referrer" so can be sure you are knowledgeable of who they are. My salesperson mentioned that people need to operate in "good faith" and so being referred by someone should be a true referral. Take it for what it's worth...

Ok, not sure if I screwed up. I placed my order last night and put down the $2500. I knew about the $1000 credit, but my rep told me we could do it later. Thinking I just needed any random reference, I then clicked on the first random link I found in the forum to see what would happen. Of course, it took me back to the build page and showed the pop-up saying I was getting $1000 off. But I had already built and ordered my car. I'm looking at my purchase agreement, and it doesn't show a discount.

Now what? How do I apply a VA or OH reference? And seeing no better way of doing it, I figured I'd throw this out: first VA or OH to PM with their info, I'm happy to use you as my referral. I know a couple people are close to hitting marks.

    Thanks, all.

$2K Off Instead Of $1K From Current VA & OH Owners, Confirmed

Where is this page located? I can't find it.

Edit: never mind, found it on my profile. It appears "my profile" is different for each car in your account, and I had looked at the other one.

So, I just received a call from Tesla corporate in Palo Alto. They wanted to update me on all the details of the referral program and to let me know that the program ends on 10/31. He went on to mention that he has never seen someone with so many referrals. I'm up to 18 now! I asked him if he knew of anyone in our region that had more, and he said he hasn't come across anyone that has that many. I know there is someone overseas that had 40+ because he had a ton of YouTube followers or something.

Anyways, keep using my referral link to get $2000 off your new Model S and maybe I can get my 85D upgraded to a P90DL!

Thanks to everyone that has used my link already!

hi all, what's the latest word on whether an out of state buyer using a VA or OH referral code needs to manually arrange anything special to receive the $2k off?

some of the earlier posts and other similar threads on this topic talked about gathering some documents/info and having the local Tesla agent chase the issue to make it happen. but recent posts sound like maybe the $2k comes automatically (eventually) after placing an order if using referral codes from VA/OH ?

I'm under the impression that it happens automatically. It can't hurt to at least get an email from your DS stating that the additional $1000 will show up on final paperwork.

There are four people in NA with more referrals than you as of 10/21 ~4p eastern:

I've been waiting a for an email or a call as well. Did they happen to mention when those who have reached 10 referrals will be able to configure and order the founder's X?

I don't have the advantage of all the $ being sent someone's way - but sheez! Quit hogging! I'm officially at 8, have a possibility on one, and it's really going to hurt to miss the discounted Founders by one referral.

    Boo!! (But happy for you.)

I think getting a Powerwall installed is a much bigger prize than the GF tour. The GF tour/party is nice and all, but you still have to pay your own way to get there and lodging.

I had two good friends who were going to use my referral, but one decided to redo his kitchen instead, and the other one just bought a 70D, but his wife forced him to use her brother for the referral credit instead of me. :(

I didn't realize that leaderboard existed. You don't see it unless you refer someone from the app. Thanks for sharing.

I had the same problem -- just refer yourself (it's just an email) and then you get access to the leaderboard.

I've stopped referring. I have one more pending which will give me 13; 3 "spares" just in case a few people back out. I'd rather see someone else get an invite to the party, etc.

I got 2k$ off my car using my colleague's link.
He got nothing out of it.
So I decided that karma required me to help him get to 5, and then get the Gigafactory visit. I got to visit Fremont when picking up my car, and it was brilliant.
I imagine my friend getting to visit the Gigafactory will even out everyone's karma.
I referred a few folks I met here, and he is up to 3 today.

Only two more! You get 2000$ off, and the knowledge you may help him get to the factory. He is a first wave owner, with what I believe is a 2012. A true believer, and overall nice family guy!
PM me for his link, my lease agreement showing proof of 2k$ if you have a tricky Advisor, and any questions on that process answered.

(I am not doing this for me. If I were, I would provide you my own link, which, if rumors are correct, will soon become a 2k$ link in CA... Sigh.)

Yep ... so close but so far ... have 4 referrals ..... three people who are waiting for their other car business leases to expire ... all of them too late ..... would definitely go to the Gigafactory if anyone wants a VA. refer .... :)

How far are they from the end of their leases? They could order now, with a delivery months from now. They get to pick. I don't know how far out you can push it, but it only takes one for you!

Hey folks, if anybody is willing to give up a 2K referral code please let me know - I will send good karma your way, and more importantly if you enjoy the mountains I have a condo in the best location in Mammoth California - in the village near the gondola. I'd be more than happy to welcome you as my guest for a few days if you can go on a non-holiday non weekend. It's gonna be a killer winter, and ski season will probably run until the end of June. :)

    hi mate,
In a few days, I'll be probably using your link to order a 85D. Still couldn't decide between loaded 70d vs base 85d :) . I am here at London btw, cold weather, lots of charging points but possibility of an eurotrip twice every year pushes me for better range.
  • Oct 23, 2015

If you can swing it, go for the 85D or 90D. You'll be very happy with the acceleration as well as the increased range. 70D would still put a smile on your face though. :)

    ok, thanks good idea.

well, got a chance to do a 2nd test drive earlier this week (an overnight). now I'm probably ~98% the way towards finally clicking the big red "ORDER" button on a 70D, perhaps sometime in next few days.
if there's anyone with a VA/OH 2k referral code still available to offer, I'd be interested! would love to help bump someone over their threshold for a GF visit or whatever, while accepting their sage advice & referral :)

Tick Toc ... Tic Toc ...... the days run down ... will be interesting if anyone keeps tabs on the number of purchases this last week of referral discounts!!! ... and how many are from states like mine (Virginia) who won't allow the credit for a referral. I just love how Elon quickly one upped them and gives the buyer the whole $2,000.

Here's another Ohio referral that will net you 2k off your purchase price, since we are not eligible. PM with any questions. I have a Signature Model S and Roadster. Model S Design Studio | Tesla Motors - Only one week before this opportunity expires!

I know we already know this but may I bring this up again. The VA and OH get you 2K but please go for any states' people (ask them if needed) who do not yet have 5 referrals. Lets get as many invites to the GF as possible. Respectfully.
  • Oct 25, 2015
    HankLloydRight
I'm in that category!! -- I need just two more for a GF invite... but that's a big "ask" for people to give up a $1000 savings to help people in non-VA/OH states. But if anyone feels that magnanimous, my link is in my sig. :)

Thanks Biff! It's good to see that spirit.

My link is available via PM because it comes with a CHAdeMO adapter, shipped to you. A second adapter will be placed at a publicly available charging station of your choice. Helping Tesla travelers jump between distant SCs.

And 3 more referrals lets me take an EE on a road trip to the GigaFactory. Want to get his interpretation of it all (and expose him to the Tesla style of travel).
