JRP3 Just trying to get an idea of what lines might be like at stores.
Feb 11, 2016
CmdrThor None of the above. Model 3 will likely replace my 2015 LEAF once it can no longer do 30 miles in the winter, so probably 2020-2022ish. I expect the vehicle will be a lot more advanced by then compared to the first run.
Feb 11, 2016
phigment I'd love to wait in line, but I don't think I'll be able to make it. The nearest store is 100km away and I think I have other commitments that night. Will have to make do with online reservation.
Hopefully a highly optioned car will help boost delivery date.
Feb 11, 2016
tracksyde I would definitely prefer to reserve in-store, but it will also depend on how it's handled and at what time. As much as I'd like to be closer to the "front of the line", I don't want to wait around, late into the night to do it either.. Kind of like how I avoid Black Friday shopping
Feb 11, 2016
ratsbew Unfortunately, I'll be a week into two months of military training. Hopefully my fiancee reserves one for us (she will!).
If it wasn't for that I think I'd go to the nearest gallery (3 hours away). It would be fun to be part of that experience. The lines will make national headlines.
TSLA will be above 200 by April.
Feb 11, 2016
Adm I'll fly to Australia and put up my tent at one of the stores there.

Feb 11, 2016
Fallenone Have a store nearby so probably will go to store to reserve it. But might not be on Mar 31 if the reveal happens at night and reservation only happens after event.
Feb 11, 2016
AMPUP Lines at stores, seriously?? there wont be any lines come on folks this isn't an iPhone. They'll make a few thousand reservations and have a few hundred people across their stores on day 1. Believe it or not most people don't even know about the model 3 and car buying is remotely different to cell phone buying.
Feb 11, 2016
dreamingof3 I'll be at the store in Blue Ash, OH. Gonna call the store and see if they are opening earlier etc.
Feb 11, 2016
ggies07 I voted for the store, which I will go at lunch time. If that takes too long, then online.

Trev Page Reveal and deposits on March 31? Hell yeah, I'm going to the Lawrence store in Toronto for the event and out my smack down right then and there. Might even drag the wife out

Feb 11, 2016
JRP3 There will almost certainly be lines at some stores.
Feb 11, 2016
CmdrThor I would say there will easily be > 10,000 reservations on Day 1. Sure this doesn't compare to the demand for an iPhone, but Tesla also has a tiny fraction of retail employees compared to Apple. The stores will be busy.
Feb 11, 2016
AMPUP Maybe through some organized craziness, but most sane people would order online. Also, some stores aren't even allowed to discuss pricing or take deposits, so not all stores will be able to do this.
Feb 11, 2016

Feb 11, 2016
Sudre There will be lines. I am sure the STL Meetups group will be planning something at the store that day anyway.
Feb 11, 2016
DarthNick I've been internally debating whether or not I should go to Yorkdale (closer to home) or Lawrence... Either way I'm gonna do my best to ensure I'm first in line (Race ya there!).
Feb 11, 2016
jbcarioca Of course you are correct. OTOH, I will fly from Rio de Janeiro to Miami on the 30th so I can join the (non-existent) queue at the Dadeland store. Luckily the Apple store is only a few steps away so they're well prepared for the (non-existent) queues. If it turns out that there really are no queues I'll still be the first one at the store; if there are I'll be one of the first.
The number of current Tesla owners and prospects who have been saying they'll reserve one without knowing the price, features, appearance or down payment seems large, but I have no idea how many of those there are. Still, just think of all the Leaf owners, Volt owners as well as existing Tesla customers. That will be a qualified enthusiastic base of more than 100,000 buyers. Forget about expanding the market. Then add the millions of hybrid owners from several manufacturers. Forget about expanding the market again. The order list will be very, very high. Tesla will be production-constrained and the biggest issue will be constraining Elon's propensity to go too far.
By the time 2018 comes around the planned size will easily accommodate 80 kWh or even more, giving optional range well in excess of 300 miles. The cheap version will still beat 200 miles handily because the Model 3 must be better than the Bolt for range. Suddenly lots of wanna-be's will see they can really do it, with Superchargers too.
I do not think I am overly optimistic, just realistic. Maintaining realism I expect 2018 delivery anyway.
Feb 11, 2016
mark Can they take reservations at galleries (ie stores in Texas)?
Feb 11, 2016
eisbock How does this work in states where Tesla is not licensed to sell cars?
In Connecticut, you can get your car serviced, but that's it. You can't buy a car and you can't ask any sales/financing questions (well, you can, but you won't get any answers). You can go to the fast food joint next door and buy your car there, but apparently you can't do it at the service center.
So I guess I already answered my question, but I'm assuming nobody will be lining up at the Milford center to reserve their Model 3?

Feb 11, 2016
Muaddid Well you arent buying the car on the 31st, you are reserving a spot... maybe there's room for that (legally) ?

Feb 11, 2016
tinm How will Tesla decide who to invite to the reveal? Who gets picked?
Since New Mexico is one of those nasty states p0wn3d by the oil/gas/car-dealer cartel, Tesla is banned from operating any stores or service centers. So I'd have to drive 9 hours to the nearest store. I'd rather go to the reveal!
Feb 11, 2016
bigbear Let us know if you hear anything
Feb 11, 2016
jgs If I had a store nearer than four hours away, I'd do it at a store, but as it is I'll do it online. I wonder if making online reservations wait 24 hours is a subtle way of penalizing anti-Tesla states, or rewarding pro-Tesla states if you prefer to look at it that way, or if there was some unrelated reason for the decision.
Feb 11, 2016
tga I think it's to publicize demand (and subtle marketing) by (hopefully) showing lines at the stores.

physicsfita +1
No way I could go to the reveal, even if Tesla thought enough of me to send an invite -- I couldn't get a flight out in time. I am free on Friday to drive to Cleveland, but that seems like a really long trip and the somewhat lower deli number probably won't help that much since I suspect Tesla will be more likely to ship mostly to California at first, if history is any guide. I suspect it will be a while before they get around to less-than-full-spec cars going to states with whom Tesla does not have good relations. :frown:
EDIT: Just read Musk's tweet more carefully -- I can't make it from work to the store before it closes on the 31st anyway, so online it is!
Feb 11, 2016
vjason Since I have a local showroom, that means I can reserve a day early. In store reservation for me on March 31.
Feb 11, 2016
Trips So I asked for the in store presale and EM made it happen. Now my question will be if all the stores have a 10am opening time, does that mean the West Coast buyers will be starting 3 hours after the East Coast?
Feb 11, 2016
jkk_ Can you edit the poll and add option "Don't reserve now but wait for the product start rolling out of production" ?
Feb 11, 2016
Az_Rael I am definitely doing online. I do have a store relatively near me down in the LA area, but I am working night shift on the 31st so won't be able to go down. Don't really want to deal with the lines anyways.
I am hoping that the prices will be such that mine will be considered "highly optioned" so it won't matter so much that I reserved the next day. (I.e, I will jump ahead of folks who ordered the base model in the store)
Feb 11, 2016
S'toon The nearest store to here is over 600km/380miles from here. Doable as a drive, but I have other things to do with my life that day. So, it'll be online for me.
Feb 11, 2016
EMP40 Emailed local advisor and they do not yet have a clue on how in store will be done. If I get an update from them I will post.
Feb 11, 2016
JRP3 I'm trying to get an idea of the initial demand right after the release, specifically the percentage of people actually going to a store to reserve.
Feb 11, 2016
strider They'll direct you to one of their internet-connected computers and you will effectively reserve on-line and give your credit card info to Tesla in California. This is how they do all orders in no-sale states.

gg_got_a_tesla Great timing for all this for me during spring break week: I'd have to drive down 40 miles from the north shore to the Tesla Honolulu store (oh, the horror!) - I hope to run into some of our fine friends from the Hawaii Tesla Owners' Club in a small queue there.

Feb 11, 2016
Johann Koeber Let's hope the European stores will have the capability to take reservations on March 31. I wonder at what time? After the reveal in California it might be closed for the night due to time zone.
Feb 11, 2016
trinites1a Tesla @ Short Hills Mall is located about 30 to 40 mins from me. May just go there to pre-order depending on if I am impressed by the reveal!
Feb 11, 2016
dgpcolorado I chose online since the nearest stores are 330 and 383 miles away (one way distance). But it is tempting to make the trip since it doesn't cost anything except time (which I have) and tire wear...
Others haven't mentioned it, but USA customers who don't get in the queue fairly early might miss out on some of the federal tax credit. Since I would order a lightly optioned version (dual drive being the only option, most likely) my car would be produced later than the higher optioned orders.
Feb 11, 2016
opiuman I know that a few people have mentioned either inputting a CC on a computer or that stores don't know how it'll work just yet. Was the Model S online only? I didn't get one personally but all the people I knew said it was online only.
Hopefully they release more info about how it'll work in store soon.
Feb 11, 2016
eloder Definitely going in store--and I probably will be getting there at least an hour early. I doubt there will be anyone waiting in line in my city, but worst case scenario my store is located near a lot of cool businesses.

Stores are for the old fashioned. I'll summon for delivery. And my intention is never to visit a store or service centre. Just want a car, no hassle.
Feb 11, 2016
nanimac I don't think there will be long lines at the store... this is not an iphone  and it's for a car that you won't get for 2 years after putting a $1,000 down.
Feb 11, 2016
theschnell Going to store! Hoping to bring several friends and family along and make a day or night of it. My car will not likely have many options, so I need to be near the front of the low-optioned cars line to try to reduce my wait and hopefully qualify for tax credit.
Feb 11, 2016
Trips I am making the 3 hour drive to the Kansas City store and will wait 2+ hours. If I am going to wait 2 years for a car, waiting a few hours to get a car months earlier will be worth it. Hopefully my $65k budget will also help lower the wait time.
Feb 11, 2016
ZAKEEUS Nearest store is 295 miles away...I'm off on Thursday so I'll be there. Assuming the Texas store can take a deposit.
Feb 11, 2016
tinm Ok 6 people currently in the poll have indicated they will make a reservation "at the reveal."
My question to these six: how are you going to the reveal? Did you get invited? Who gets to go? Who are the chosen few? I am very curious and everyone's staying mum on this so far, even Tesla who I've emailed.
Anyone care to splain?
Feb 11, 2016
TslaIsFuture Im expecting the reveal to be 3/30 with store reservation opening morning of 3/31 so I will arrive 1 hr early JIC. I will be getting a decent optioned 3 so that should help in delivery to max out tax credit.
Feb 11, 2016
jgs Most importantly, what's the procedure for making the deposit in person? I'm assuming it has to do with stuffing hundred dollar bills into Elon's dcolletage.
Feb 11, 2016
EMP40 I am now an investor and future customer, how does one get an invite. A 2 hour drive is easy.
Feb 11, 2016
CmdrThor Best bet would be to ask someone who is invited if you can be their +1.
Feb 11, 2016
Az_Rael So I wonder if there are huge lines at the stores and people wait hours to put their reservations in; if those same people will be upset when they find out their reservation number isn't actually a place in line for a car?
I suppose if folks are going just for the fun of it, that's cool.
Feb 12, 2016
Olle Most Tesla owners I talk to will order a 3. Who wants to be last in line? So everybody will come to the store. Our store here in Orlando has about 500 Model S in its uptake area. Say half of them come to order a Model 3 and there are 2 staff to take orders? Sounds like a recipe for a line, no?
Feb 12, 2016
mattobadia I will order at store after watching stream. They said we could bring our computers and watch outside, that they won't be streaming it. do Tesla stores have wifi?
Feb 12, 2016
gregincal Oh, come on. Given the expected run rate of the Model 3, reserving in store versus on April 1st will probably result in a couple week delay of the car (assuming you want the highest end config, otherwise there is almost no reason to go to the store). Some people just like standing in lines, but even though I fully plan to order a model 3 I wouldn't waste my valuable time lining up like a lemming. I never understand the mentality.
Feb 12, 2016
JRP3 As of now the poll is trending heavily to reserving at a store. I expect the ratio to change for the general public outside of this forum, but I think it's safe to say the stores will be swamped, at least in the more EV centric areas.
Feb 12, 2016
gregincal I expect the ratio to not bear the slightest resemblance outside this forum. And a hundred members of this forum are not numerous enough to swamp stores. That said, I do expect some stores (like Santana Row) to be swamped, and also we don't really know the details of how it's all going to work yet or what sort of publicity is going to be attached. Of course I never understand people lining up at Apple stores either.
Feb 12, 2016
tinm I'm disappointed none of the (currently up to 8) people who've indicated they are going to the Model 3 event have explained how they got an invite. Have invites already gone out?
Is this some kind of hush-hush "you have to know somebody at Tesla" kind of thing going on?
I'd love to attend the event and would be extremely likely to plop down a $1000 deposit on the spot at the event, seeing the car with my own eyes.
Trying to figure out how to do that.
Feb 12, 2016
gregincal My guess is that their votes are "aspirational".
Feb 12, 2016
tinm Yeah Occam and his razor would probably agree with that

Feb 12, 2016
Nomad I'm looking forward to confirmation on this. I can understand Tesla not wanting hoards of people inside, where damage to their cars is more likely. Still, not offering a stream is kind of a bummer.
Feb 12, 2016
Gizmotoy It seems really weird to me that the first orders must be in store, on the day of the reveal, and you can't watch the reveal at the store. The two logical options seem like they should have been:
1) Watch reveal in store and then take pre-orders
2) Watch reveal online and then take pre-orders
Feb 12, 2016
ReddyLeaf Same, except a 2011 LEAF, and I don't expect to need a replacement (it's 1 mi to the closest mall, hardware/grocery store in town and 5 mi to the one we use the most). Out of town trips pretty much require 200 mi range and SC.
Feb 12, 2016
JRP3 Nor do I, but this is way cooler than just a phoneI chose "online" in the poll but I might actually drive an hour and a half to the nearest store just for the fun of it. If the weather is nice...

Feb 12, 2016
xmetal My Tesla store is only 10 minutes away, and I kind of enjoy wandering in there and getting to chat so I'll go to the store. I buy nearly everything online but once in a while it's fun to be part of the crowd, and I'd like to have the earliest slot possible once production comes around.
Feb 12, 2016
MiamiNole This sums it up for me. If I can't watch the reveal in-store, then I'll just watch it at home and order online. I could always just swing by the Tesla gallery afterwards and chat it up. I just want to be able to make my reservation as soon as possible.
Feb 12, 2016
Tam I assume qualifying Referrers would get an invite first

Feb 12, 2016
strider Wishful thinking on my part. I'm hoping the reveal will be at the factory (which is local to me) combined with the fact that we own a Roadster and a Model S would cause us to appear in Tesla's invite-o-tron.

Cattledog Well, in 2013 they announced they in Q1 they had made a penny, 1 cent, on April 1st. Stock went ballistic from there forward before recent troubles. I think Elon likes the symmetry of sending a tweet on the night of the first on the order of, "Between in store and online reservations, over 100,000 reservations have been made for the Model 3." And the stock will go ballistic.

flankspeed8 I plan on being at the Eden Prairie, MN store on March 31st for my deposit, and if they allow for a friend in Iowa. Depending on demand, those placing orders in store could really have a jump in the queue compared to online. This really is an interesting move by Elon to get people in the stores. For me, it will be my first visit to a Tesla store.

gigglehertz If I lived closer to a store I would go just for the thrill of being a part of something so huge and exciting. Unfortunately I live a good 2 hours drive away, and I don't actually have a car right now, so... I would say I will wake up at midnight to reserve online, but we don't have any details of the logistics yet. In any case by the time April 1 is over with I will be on the list, just not sure how far down I will be.
Feb 14, 2016
JRP3 Actually the assumption is that everyone does not have access to all three choices. All will have access to online, fewer will have access to in store, and even fewer will have access to the reveal, yet so far the poll distribution does not reflect that, with more choosing in store than online.

EVNow There are too many open questions to answer the poll with any certainty, but I picked store anyway.
I'll reserve at the store, if it is during day time (I can take a couple of hours off from work). But if it is some-other time it would be difficult.
Also, the reservation process needs to simple and quick. They should have a simple 3 field form (name, address, cc) that we fill and submit at the store.
BTW, I expect a line at the store. Afterall, the nearby Nissan dealer is the largest Leaf dealer in the country.
Feb 14, 2016

Josh the German Hi Folks,
Im not sure. Maybe Im to lazy to travel to the next Tesla-Store and will do it at home. But I have a really perfect guess to go to Nuremberg accompanied by our 12-year old son where a new store opens late February, reserve an M3 and have a visit to the remarkable railroad museum in Nuremberg afterwards: first step to end our own steam-engine age by reserving an M3 and than having a closer look to the history of steam engines in this amazing museum. It would be a real celebration of a decisive step ...
Regards from Germany

1208 I think they will do it alphabetically and by country then stores.
So as England has an E, then we in England will have a 5 digit number. As the USA has a U, you lot will be given a 21 digit number.
Obviously the lower the number the sooner it will be produced.
Feb 16, 2016
Dmoney I always wanted a Model S. I would never own an EV except the Tesla. I thought it was just the greatest thing around. But it was just too expensive no matter how I priced it. Now I have an opportunity to stand in line and get a model 3 which we know Tesla makes Bad A- looking cars. I will be there if things don't change.
By the way, I called the Galleria office in Houston, and the lady told me they will be taking deposits as of right now. I will check back if in a month they change their minds. Probably after work unless I can think of a good excuse to come in late that day.
Feb 16, 2016
Iggy Just made an in-store appointment today for March 31 Chicago downtown - was there for opening day in 2010 ( January 26, 2010 ) not previous evening event - so only proper I place our reservation there.
Amtrak up day before - overnight stay - appointment booked.

jbcarioca True. Since Dadeland, which has a Tesla Store, is considered a country because it offers passport stamped entry benefits to all who come there and is more multilingual than is Switzerland obviously Dadeland comes before England. Anyway England is no longer a country from Tesla terms, but is considered within the United Kingdom... thus you come just before the mainland USA, but after the rest of us. Now how can I manage to arrange my order from Austria? better yet Albania.

Iggy Just made an appointment to make deposit. Figured it would smart to call and make an early morning appointment to beat crowd. As far as I'm aware person who handled it today for me stated it would be to make a Model 3 deposit - no one seemed to state that this wasn't cool and that we would have to queue up. We'll see next month I guess. Was told I'd receive a call week of appointment to confirm.
Seemed logical to call and not just show up day of expecting them to cater to me.

MiamiNole Won't your reservation number still affect when you can configure and eventually have your car delivered with respect to orders of the same configuration?

strider I'm sure you will be reserving on a computer or tablet in the store and all will be using a common back-end so reservations will truly be in order regardless of location. But it sounds like East Coasters will have an edge over we West Coasters. Yes, I realize the ANZ and Europeans have an even larger "head start" but Tesla has historically shipped cars to the US before Europe or Asia so I would assume that US/Canada cars would be built ahead so reservation order won't matter.
