Got back from my second factory tour today, I have been on more factory tours then received email updates from Tesla about my purchase :(

Factory seemed to be running slow today but there where lots of multi-coat red cars coming down the line. There are TV monitors with listed VIN numbers in production, would be cool to spot a 40 reservation holder's number but I didn't have good enough eye sight to read the display.

I see something new each time through, though I would rather have a car.

If it makes you feel any better, my sequence number is 4408 and I finalized 12/8. EOL is 5/27 and no delivery date yet. It's still fun to see so many people getting delivery dates and VINs. Hang in there - it won't be much longer.

Eeayago, I don't have a VIN or anything yet, but I ordered the identical car plus jump seats , minus active air, to come into Rockville. Also I grew up near you, live in Arlington, now!

TM called last week and hung up. I called back and they had no record of calling me and no updates, just
"maybe May or June". She told me she hasn't heard of any 40s bring delivered before June, though, which doesn't jive with this thread.

I got my 40 Thursday morning. White w/ tan leather interior, Tech, studio sound, and active air.

It's been a long wait - I reserved early in 2012. They were nice enough to deliver to my house - though they originally wanted me to go and pick it up. Apparently, for early reservation holders, they make an exception to the new policy of requiring pick-up. Got financing at 1.49% for 72 months.

I'm never going to push the limits on this car (my daily round trip commute is about 6 miles). Don't think I'll ever even need range mode. It's a shame that this price point won't be an option in the future. I really pushed the limits of what I'd be willing to pay for a car. However, I'm very happy to finally be electric - just sold my ICE to Carmax this morning. Been a busy few days.

Not always. I said to my DS that since we reserved in 2011 and finalized in 2012 when home delivery was part of the promise of the purchase experience, and it was not OUR choice to wait this long to receive our car they should grandfather us in for home delivery. At first she agreed to do that for us, but a few days later she called saying her supervisor will not allow her to bring it to us and we have to go in to get it. I didn't want to make a huge deal of it because I just want the car now, but I did say that I don't think it's right that home delivery was promised and now they won't provide it. I asked that my comments about it be relayed up the chain. This is one of several promises I know of that Tesla made at time of reservation and finalization that they decided to back out of: Alcantra headliner, fog lights, and now home delivery. I'm sure when I get the car on Friday I won't be thinking about this, but for now it bothers me.

I'm glad you WERE able to get the home delivery you were promised.

Well according to some posts on the TM forums, it appears to charge the bottom 72% of battery to equate to 40kw = ~144 rated miles 160 ideal. So this would be one instance where there would be no real reason to charge at any other percentage than 72%=100%.

I do hope they start working on reducing the 4KW a day vampire draw.
  • May 12, 2013
    Brandonm
    nice!

    - - - Updated - - -

If I'm parsing this correctly, we can range charge with no ill effects, correct?
  • May 12, 2013
    shokunin
    Correct.

We don't know for certainty, but it appears from the charging "bar" indicator that the car only charges up to 72% the top 28% is not charged or used as it would in a 60kw car. So charging to full range mode 40kw at 100% is essentially only a mid-level 72% charge on the 60kw battery.
  • May 12, 2013
    Brandonm
sweet - thanks for the clarification!
  • May 13, 2013
    Jenni
Pardon me in advance if this sounds snippy, but isn't this something we should know for certain? Given that some customers have received their 40s (yay!) shouldn't the folks at the service center be able to give exact instructions on the most efficient charging techniques for the cars they are delivering based on how they limited the range?
    FYI
I should be picking my car up next month and I'm just wondering what the experience will be like. How much time will they spend on a features tutorial? I was also hoping for something of a recipe for the best way to charge my car, given my particular commute pattern. I only drive to work three days per week, about 16 miles round trip. I predict my husband may want to use my car on my telework days, and his commute is about 40 miles round-trip. (Occasionally, I would like to make it to Baltimore (120 round trip) or maybe Charlottesville (115 1-way). ). Is there Really any chance I can get to Charlottesville in non -ideal conditions, and charge on a standard outlet without having to stay there for two days? If not, I have another car.
    thx

  • May 13, 2013

I wonder if using the lower 72% of the battery will result in reduced performance. I think I remember reading about a Perf doing 0-60 in 3.9 when fully charged.
  • May 13, 2013
    Brandonm
Not really worried if it does - considering we're getting 60's instead of 40's we're getting more theoretical top end performance than we signed up for anyway.

It wasn't easy to search for VINs and figure this out. It is interesting to note that the VIN has the letter "C" meaning Base 40KW version even though it is really a 60 in disguise.
  • May 13, 2013
    Longhorn92
I noticed the "C" designation as well and thought it was interesting. If we upgrade to 60 kWh in the future, we can't change the VIN to be a 60. When I called insurance, I believe they saw it as a 60 which I guess makes sense.
  • May 13, 2013
    SUN-day Driver
I was concerned about the "C" designation also since its really a 60 and could be upgraded, but then I thought what about battery swapping in the future? All our cars have the potential to have a different battery, so I realized the designation in the VIN is best thought of as "original configuration."
  • May 13, 2013
    shokunin
Soon, we'll know for sure once more people have them and post charging stats and mileage usage.

The best recipe to charge is to charge every night. With vampire losses and daily driving, the 40kw pack doesn't have the latitude in range to not charge for few days. I plug in daily and do a standard charge (4.4) every night starting at midnight. When we receive our 40 it'll be no different.

You'll get more comfortable with the type of watt/mi you're averaging based on your driving style, elevation gains/losses, speed, and weather. You can make it Charlottesville on a full charge driving conservatively, but you'll need to find a way to completely recharge to get back whether at a public J1772 charger or somewhere with a 240v outlet (unless you want to stay for 30+ hours on a 120v outlet).

I was reading this article posted in the other forum about life expectancy of the battery vs charging and temperature. http://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy12osti/53817.pdf

I like to know as much about batteries as possible because I design systems with rechargeable batteries at work. I will spare you the details of reading that article and summarize it as follows. There is a correlation between the state of charge in the battery (SOC) and how long it will last. The higher the SOC on average left on the battery the quicker it "ages" the cells. This aging is also accelerated by heat. The ideal conclusion is to charge your battery just before you need to use it but that is hard to predict in real life, although you could set the charging cycle to start early in the morning so charging completes just when you would be ready to leave for work. However the 40 owners actually don't have to worry about this because the effect from the SOC is greatly reduce when kept below 80% of the total capacity. Tesla is limiting us to a 72% charge so we will always be below 80%.

Keeping the battery cool, charging it less that full might extend the batteries life another year to two. A batteries useful life is generally measured to the point when it can only provide 80% of it's original capacity, so even then the battery is still going to continue to be functional.

I just got my delivery button and have a few questions:

    1) Delivery Date: June 12 - July 3rd. It is being delivered to the Marietta (Atlanta, GA) Tesla Service center. Is this normal now and they aren't doing home delivery?

    2) For the owner's legal name, there is the option to put in a second person's. Is there any reason to do this? My wife owns a business and was planning to drive it too and do a business right off. Does anyone know if I need to add her name to it for this reason?

    3) Trade-In: Has anyone had any success with the trade-in Tesla is offering? I have an X5 I'm selling and was curious if I should consider checking the "trade-in" box.

Just picked mine up on Saturday and so far I have been getting very close to the "rated range" (144 miles and once 147 miles) Seems like this is going to do very nicely for me because my commute isn't that long and I fully expected the original 40 to have a range of around 120 when in standard charge mode. Now because of the 60 pack it's no problem to charge in what would have been considered range mode before.

Our car was delivered yesterday and we are beat. Spent 6 hours doing tours and test drives . . . Luckily, we did not get the new owner "Tesla ticket" for speeding because we certainly did a bit of that! Only one issue, we have a warning light and message: "Service Tire Pressure System". Called service this AM and it sounds like it is not uncommon and they will schedule an appointment to correct it. It appears that the range with the "40 kWh" limitation is about 144 miles. (At least that's what it said when I checked on the car at 3:00 AM. When I got up this morning it was showing 141 miles, still plugged in. Maybe my wife slipped out for a quick spin sometime after my 3 AM status check!) Will go in later this week for a full frontal wrap (on the car) including windshield. We are definitely "Happy Campers"...

When I first got the car, it had 144. I did a probably two mile laps; I didn't baby it. I then drove home (47 miles) averaging 70ish, and I got home with 95 miles left. Today, I took basically the same commute (40 miles) and had 92 miles left. The difference might be due to a steep grade. I think the grade helped me with the mileage on the way home. It's not perfect, but I'm happy with the prediction.

I received a statement from my DS - due to all of the questions TM has received about the software limitation, they are now providing the following answer to customers:

"In regards to the limited 60kwh battery: You will have a 60kwh battery and the charge bar will show the full capacity of that battery on your instrument cluster. The charge bar will show the battery charged up to 72% when it is at a full charge for the 40kwh battery and the remainder will be shown in grey. The car will come with a sticker that will state the EPA rated range for the software limited 60kwh battery that you will have. The ideal rating for the 40kwh battery is 160 miles (tested at 55mph). I wouldnt worry about the battery not fully charging as batteries, in general, do not like being fully discharged or fully charged so this will be a very comfortable and healthy state for your battery."

It's not really more than we've discovered via those who've already received their cars, but this is probably what TM will be telling those who ask from now on.

Here is a data point for the 40's range.
I drove 109 miles today and ended up with 13 rated miles left. It showed 144 miles when I left at 6:50 this morning and 13 when I got home around 9. The AC was on the entire time I was in the car and maybe 15 minutes with me out. The trip shows 315 kW/mi.

Gocken2, What happens when you charge with extended range mode turned on before charging? The car turns this off automaticly after 3 days if this feature is turned on. I wonder if you would get the full 160 range estimate on the gauge?

There is no extended range. The 40's have 4.5 so there is a slider for the % charge. The 40's only go up to 72% max and that was what my car was set at. The range says between 144 and 147 rated miles when the charge completes. The 160 miles is ideal.

Just got an email from our CEO saying that we are installing EV charging stations that are free to use.

Getting the upgraded "40" with pricing before the increase, check. Buying the stock when I put down my reservation, double check. Charging for free, oh yeah.

At this rate the car is practically free. :)

What it shows on the instrument panel is rated range, which is a fixed percentage of the EPA's ideal of what you should get for the amount of kWh charge remaining on your battery. The energy app shows projections based on your actual energy use while driving. This is a much better prediction of the actual range you have left. I wish there was a way to show the projection from the energy app on the instrument panel instead of the rated range.

For the other folks receiving their 40kWh cars, what SW version is loaded? Is it 4.4 or 4.5? Sounds like the most recent deliveries are with 4.5. Did anyone else get 4.4?

    - - - Updated - - -

To confirm: with SW v4.5 on the 40s, there is no range mode? One just slides the bar up to 72% max. Makes sense given the larger battery size. I'm still in 4.4 so I'm wondering what to expect.

I think all the 40's are on 4.5 since they needed a software update to limit battery capacity. We took delivery of our 40kw last night and there is only the slider bar. I don't see any reason to not leave it at max 72% (40kw limit) for charging. It's an easy load on the battery and should last a long long time before we see any range reduction. No need to worry about doing a range charge. There is still a range mode where it will limit AC and heater power draw, which can be useful.

My P85 is still on 4.4. Our DS mentioned that the handle extension will come in the software update to 4.5 for those who do not already have the slight handle extension on opening the doors.

I picked-up my "40" yesterday, and it had v4.5. I agree with @shokunin on all fronts: (i) that all 40s will likely be delivered with v4.5 or later since the 72% software limitation didn't exist prior to v4.5, (ii) max range charge no longer exists nor is required on the 40s, and (iii) range mode does still exist (limits climate control usage to increase range).

Picked up my 40 this AM...amazeballs.

Super happy with the car. Had 135 on it when picked up, 111 left after going to work (about 13 miles real world) and abused the car many times. Happy with the range!

We got our 40 last Friday with 4.5 and today it notified me to apply an update. That was quick! From reading on the forums all kinds of problems people have had after updating, I'm going to hold off and see what people who are braver than I report about the update before I apply it.

What problems have people had with the 4.5 update? So far it had been questions about what percentage to charge to.

I meant some of the previous updates. Nothing personal intended; I'm a software engineer and I know the risk of updating is to get new problems in exchange for old problems being fixed or new features being introduced. I don't jump on updates for my computers or phones for the same reason. You can find people with new unexpected problems for practically every update on any kind of device.

I see. I totally agree. I was asking the question since I thought you may had heard of some problems with 4.5 that are new.

I jump on the updates but with the understanding they something may happen.

I asked becasue my 40 was delivered 9-May loaded with version 4.4. After a full charge the dispaly shows 189 miles of range! In other words there is no SW range limit that I can tell. I've been expecting that will change when 4.5 is pushed out. Or did Tesla gift me the 60 :)? I do have 60 badging on the rear.

As everyone knows, v4.4 does not have a slider bar just a standard/range charge selector. It would be nice to confirm that there is essentialy no standard/range selection mode with 4.5 SW and a 40 (i.e. a select position at around 61%). I know there is a range conservation feature (reduced A/C etc) but that is different. Even if there was, I agree with SUN-day Driver that there seems to be no reason not to keep the slider at 72%.

    I guess I'll ultimatly findout when I get 4.5.

Check your VIN and see if you have the right car! If so this sounds like an oversight and if I were you I wouldn't update or change a thing!

As mentioned before on 4.5 there is just the slider. On my 40 it only goes between 50% and 72% (I don't understand why on a 40 they limit the bottom to 50% instead of the 30% that the non-40 cars go down to, given this is a percentage of the full 60 kWh battery and hence the upper limit of 72%). There is no other control for charging. On the iPhone app there are still standard and range buttons, but when I try to switch to range charging the button snaps back to standard, so no cheating by using the pre-40 app is possible.

Nice! At may 9 you must have been one of the first, maybe they hadn't fixed the limiting software yet. My car will have the range of a 60 also... because I broke down and upgraded right before it went to the factory. :)

I know @boilerbots states a "C" references the 40 but I don't really know what he is referring to. Certainly, I don't have a "C" anywhere in my VIN. Don't know why the VIN should matter though. Perhaps the "C" is just a random result of manafacture grouping?

In any case my gig will be up soon... I got an email from Tesla stating that they will push the SW limitation to my car soon (after I accept version 4.5). Refusing to upgrade is not really an option since it is clear that there is still significant development and SW fixes that are needed. I'm thinking the vampire load in particular. It my case it's appears to be more than my daily milage! Besides, I want to do the right thing.

It was nice while I had it, but in the end the limitation won't affect me. I've had the car two weeks and put less than ~100 miles on it. I do feel special though since they were obviously confused at the factory and put the 60 badging on. I do think I was one of the first if not the first 40 and the SW was just not ready (though they supposidly delayed my delivery to the 9th to incorporate it). It's a long story why -- certainly there are others who reseved before Jan 2012 -- but in a nutshell there was some confusion whether I had upgraded to the 60 when, in fact, that did not happen.

There is a VIN decoding thread and the first post is updated with out to read your VIN. The 8th character for me is "C" which means Base 40kw.

    - - - Updated - - -

My car is ready more than a week early! I kept asking for the best pick-up possible and they said my car would roll out from the factory on the 29th. Tuesday my iphone app connected for the first time so I emailed my DS and was told that the my car was finished.

I wanted to pick-up today at the factory but they don't have any time slots available so I am going Friday at 9AM.

This is so great to get my car before Memorial day, my parents are visiting from out of state and are going to get to see the factory with me.

I had to swing my Home Depot for an electrical outlet. I built my garage with 6-50 outlets for my shop equipment. Now I need a 14-50 for the Tesla. I already got lots of 50+ amp outlets just not a mating outlet.

My 8th digit is a G. Now that I read the VIN decoding thread its odd that they even used a C since the physical hardware for a C does not exist - it's simply a SW change. The fact that I will get the SW limitation once I download 4.5 will confirm that there is no physical difference. On the other hand, if someone physically had to do something to my car to invoke the 40 limitation I could see a reason for the different designation.

Good luck on your pick up. A lot do do in a short time. My situation was a little easier: I had upgraded my panel and installed the 14-50 outlet last summer. When I originally ordered over a year ago I had no idea the 40s would take so long. But there here now :)

Are you sure you don't mean the 7th character in your VIN, boilerbots?

    5YJSA1CG#DFP#####

I expected that with the "40 is really software-limited-60" you'd have "CG" for 7th and 8th characters.

    NeedToDrive
@brianman, I have an A in digit 7: 5YJSA1AG... according to the decoding VIN thread, I'd think all 40's would have an "A" there since it is said to represent charger type. A "C" at digit 7 indicates a "10kw charger with DC fast charge" (which I read as supercharging) but base 40s and 60s supposedly don't have fast charge capability. Now that we know supercharging is an add on option for those with a 60 (either base or upgraded 40), it appears the VIN decoding may not be reliable. In my case, I've been told by Tesla that I will be SW limited even though I am not limited under 4.4 right now. Welcome to the world of a SW dominated Auto industry. I really hope this does not go the way of other electronics: "oh, you want adaptive cruse control, that is going to be an extra $$ per month."

Thanks for the info, NTD. Based on what we heard about "hardware will be in the car for fast charge, just not enabled" I expected they might have used "C" rather than "A" to reflect the hardware capabilities -- for the charging; and similarly G for the physical battery rather than what's enabled. Apparently not, though.

    SUN-day Driver
Right, they seem to be using it to mean "as originally delivered" instead of indicating the actual capability of the hardware. This will make it very confusing if someone upgrades from a 40 to a 60 and has to explain to potential buyers why the VIN indicates 40 but the seller says its a 60.
