Options you would like to see in the Model X part 2

Future request for TEG: Get me this picture when bonnie gets her X.

Also, I'm curious if "bonnie1194" will become "bonnie1194,2" after her X arrives.

One small thing which is huge for me: My 4Runner's sun visors slide along (extends out on) an arm so that they can be positioned where the sun is when on the sides, against the doors. That's something I love in the 4Runner, and would love in the X. Should be simple to do.

Also I really hope that third row of seats is easily removed. We intend to haul our Akitas in this car, hence the license plate that I already ordered (see avatar) !!
  • Jul 29, 2013

I doubt it will be. The rear motor intrudes into the space under the seats. The 3rd row will fold flat, but not be removable.

    bonnie
    prob not.
  • Jul 29, 2013
    EmeraldSkye
Hmm, that would be a problem. We need the height for the dogs. I wonder if the 2nd row is removable? That would work too. As long as we can put the seats back in when we (rarely) have other people with us. No kids, just two large dogs.

If using the roof rack made only one Falcon door open fully would that be acceptable? or would you rather see a compromise where the roof rack had a mechanism where it would lift straight up above the doors or tilt back to avoid the doors? Both lift and tilt will add weight, complexity, maintenance and cost to the rack.

I don't believe that opening both the falcon doors straight out will be an option as that would be a safety risk for egress.

An option that might make sense
  • Jul 30, 2013
    Discoducky
@aronth5, yeah exactly and I'm wondering what others think about the tradeoffs and the question about kayaks in particular (aka something that wouldn't make a lot of sense to be on the rear tow hitch or even towed.

Personally, it would be cool if could be placed on one side without having a complex lifiting/tilting solution. Also, I believe the X will already sense obstacles above so this shouldn't be an issue. I wish Model S did this with the rear hatch as a low ceiling in a parking garage had exposed nails coming out of the insulation and would have done serious damage had I not stopped it from going all the way up.

My must have, should have and nice to have list

I would like to chime in with a few. (Listed in order of importance)

I'm still debating whether to put "Ultimate safety" up in the must have, but at this point I don't think its a show-stopper. Given that Tesla is a technological leader and committed to safety I would almost say it should be required for this model.

    Must have
    • Fold flat (and optionally removable) 2nd and 3rd row seating
    • "parktronics"[SUP]1[/SUP]

    Should have
    • Ultimate safety (blind spot / adaptive cruise control / drowsy detection / crash protection & collision avoidance, etc...)
    • 100-120 kWh battery options
    • Tow hitch
    • Dash or console fridge / drink warmer &/or cooler
    • Heated & cooled seating

    Nice to have
    • Drive-In / camping mode
    • HUD
    • V2G / V2V[SUP]2[/SUP] charge support
    1. "parktronics" are a must. It can save lives and property and is simple to do. After all a human is still driving and we all make mistakes.
    2. V2G = Vehicle to Grid and/or V2V = Vehicle to Vehicle charge transfer support would come in handy. How many electric s'mores can a Model X make while camping comes to mind? How many friends saved the day when someone's range estimate was a little off and needed a little 'boost' to get to the Super Charger?

Where does this info come from? We talked to a Tesla employee last weekend and he said the motor does not currently intrude into the space under the back seats in the S, so there would be no reason for it to do so in the X either, especially since it will be even taller. The seats will be sitting higher off the ground, providing plenty of space underneath.
  • Aug 11, 2013
    fengshui
It was a simplification of the Model S design. As is clear from pictures of the Model S skateboard frame, the rear engine does consume vertical space above the battery pack. While the space under the seats may not specifically be intruded into, the motor still does intrude upwards aft of the rear seats.

The original question was regarding if the rear seats could be removed. In most vehicles with removable rear seats, the rear seats can be removed to create a large flat cargo area. Given the vertical space consumed by the rear engine, the a flat cargo area from the passenger compartment straight back to the trunk isn't going to happen. I suppose that the Model X could have removable seats with a hump in the floor for the engine, but I think it's much more likely that the rear seats will not be removable, and maximal cargo space will be obtained through fold flat seats.

The Tesla employee is probably factually correct regarding intrusion into the back seats in the Model S, but the difference between intrusion into the seats and trunk versus intrusion into the trunk alone makes little difference to the original question.
  • Aug 11, 2013
    scottf200
Can you expand on what you think this entails?
  • Aug 11, 2013
    EmeraldSkye
Well, since I'm told the motor does not intrude into the back seat area of the S and I see no intrusion of the motor into the trunk area of the S, I see no reason why it should intrude into any of the X. Time will tell. We will only know when the X comes out, which he said will be next summer (I believe he said late next summer) before it shows up in showrooms.

I can cross my fingers and hope.
  • Aug 11, 2013
    fengshui
The motor clearly intrudes into the possibly trunk area of the S. If it didn't then there wouldn't be the covered lower trunk area. It would just be flat from the floor of the passenger compartment clear through to the lower trunk. Yes, it doesn't feel like an intrusion, but if you took out the rear seats, there would be a hump coming up from the floor of the passenger compartment. That's what I was describing as the intrusion into the trunk area.

As for the Model X, anything is possible. The increased height might open up the possibility of a flat cargo area with the seats removed, but I doubt it. Regardless, once Tesla has Alpha and Beta cars manufactured, we'll know a lot more.

Drive-In / camping mode: A carry over of the drive-in issues / solution from this thread...

    Drive-in problems (and solution))

    When put into Drive-In Mode:
    Headlights Off
    Volume Control
    Auto Wipers
no cabin lighting activations when doors or liftgate open
display in night mode and at lowest brightness
    activate surround sound
    radio tune
    DND phone

    When put in Camping Mode:
all Drive-In Mode things above less the Auto Wipers and DND phone
    + display off
    + auto level
+/- others depending on what this baby gets. :)

I currently drive an X6 and think that the Tesla X looks very similar to my car. I've also owned 2 X5s I greatly prefer my X6, which brings me to:

Why would I get an X over the S? I prefer the raised ride height. And until they put cup holders in the rear seat of the S, I won't buy one. Its just too hot in Texas to not let your kid have a beverage. So I will drive my car that gets 14mpg (or buy another one) until they put cup holders in the back. Or until someone builds another electric car that can drive the pants off of my car I guess. (I'm holding my breath...)

I'd prefer that the third row seat be optional too. I'd never use it and I don't want to pay for something that I'd have to find a place store for at least 3 years. Let those who want it pay more and those that don't pay less. Just like BMW does for the 3rd row in an X5.

And that brings me to the giant thing that I'd like improved in the X over the S -- make those front cup holders not stupid. You shouldn't have to reach behind you to get a cup. And the cupholder set should fit at least 2 32oz cups (hey -- I'm not asking for super-giant big gulps here, just regular old 32oz size cups). My cup holders are in prime use location and we still have accidents. Putting them in a stupid location and making them too close together is just asking for trouble. A beverage incident is not what you're looking for in your rolling ball of electronics, is it?

Soft close doors would be a nice addition. :) Once you've forgotten how to close doors, you don't want to go back!

    My wishlist:

    1. ventilated seats (best "all" 4seats - only Range Rover offer this...)
    2. soft close doors
    3. 4 zone clima.
    4. HUD
    5. RSE

and i am not talking about things what Model S already have....(air susp., pano-roof, rear camera...etc.)

My only three wish list requests for the Model X are cooled front seats, adaptive cruise control, and Around-View Parking cameras (like most of the Infiniti and BMW vehicles have). If the 2015 Tesla Model X can't at least stack up to the 2010 Infiniti FX50, I won't be able to justify the extra $40-50,000 just to drive electric. We have our reservation, but the car's gotta justify the hype for me to execute the purchase in two years.

I wouldn't mind this myself since I'll only ever use a maximum of two rows, but I doubt we'll see it as Tesla favors split-folding rather than removable seats. Who knows though, we're still a long way out.

Probably the best option for either the X or the S. I would have traded some S trunk and kiddie seat room for another few inches for the back seat passengers. My kids are 6+ footers now. :)

Many cars used to have double visors, where moving the main visor to the side would still leave a secondary visor in front. I don't know why this simple convenience has slowly been disappearing from newer vehicles. In addition to the side visor sliding as EmeraldSkye requests, I'd like Tesla to include that second visor. I would also like to clarify that I want the side visor to slide in its entirety like in the Infiniti FX, not have a little plastic piece slide out like in the Rav4 EV.

Agreed. Frankly I don't understand while all car sun visors aren't made that way. It's such a simple thing to do, but the only car I have ever owned that had them was a mid-90's Lexus LS400.

Also, time to point out again that the Model X is a very good looking car - if we could ever get a good look at it w the doors closed! For obvious reasons, it is always displayed w the wings up. Looks better w them down.

Why thank you  I fully understand the cold thing, living in Montreal. I play hockey, goaltender to be exact, which means a lot of gear to transport. For example, my 2011 Outback requires me to fold down two of the seats in order to fit everything and still have rear visibility(bag in the trunk, I can leave my leg pads on top of the bag but then I can't see anything, so the leg pads go on the back seat). My friend's Model S fits my gear in the trunk(pads+bag) with his bag(smaller since he's not a goalie) in the frunk and both our sticks slide over the top of the rear seats and rest against the second row floor. This is a major selling point for me, and the X being even larger and my lack of use for the third row will provide a huge trunk(with the third row seats basically always folded flat) plus the frunk for whatever else I have. This is honestly the first time I'm excited of spending this much on a car, as opposed to being happy when I end up paying less than I set out to when shopping for a car.

As OP of the thread decided to try and organize it a bit, as things keep getting re-hashed. I have divided the options mentioned in the thread into four categories, and loosley tried to order them with the most mentioned options being at the top of the category. If an option was only mentioned once, I might of skipped it, and probably missed some others altogether. Feel free to alter the list.

    Interior
    accessible drink/cup holdrs
    heated seats
    ventilated/cooled seats
ventilation/controls in the back/ 4 zone climate control
    Removable second row seating
    lay-flat cargo area.
Storage - more of it (compared to model s)
memory seated position for at least two drivers
    Rear seat entertainment
    heated steering wheel
    Aux power front and rear
driver seat automatically goes back when turn car off, making ingress and egress easier
sun visors slide along (extends out on) an arm so that they can be positioned where the sun is when on the sides,
    trunk partition
    dog barrier
    mini-refrigerator

    Exterior
    panoramic sunroof
roof rack with needs ability to hold kayak and skis
    normal door option
memory mirror positions for 2 drivers with Electrally foldable auto-dimming heated side mirrors
    tow hitch/wiring standard
good clearance without resorting to raising the car with air suspension
Luxury rear seating option for adults.
    soft close doors
    automatic trunk closure
    lightweight multi-use trailer
different performance wheels than the ones currently on the model S
more aggressive/masculine appearance for the performance version
Aluminum package interior for the performance version
cargo liner as an option as well.

    Battery and Charging
85 kWh and 100 kwh battery options
Dual plugs for the dual chargers so the car could be plugged into 2 240V charge cables simultaneously when alone at a charging station.
Option for charge-port on either side (since my wife and I will share an HPC (true love!)
Charge adapter for same connection to Roadster or vice-versa
    Drive-In / camping mode
    V2G / V2V2 charge support

    Driver Assist
    Adaptive cruise control
Parking assistance system (cameras, audio/visual sensors, etc)
    blind spot indicator
    Auto dimming high beam headlights
    Lane Change Warning
    Drowsy Warning
    Crash detection and braking system
    HUD

I also added another picture of the cargo partition, showing a recent trip to Costco for our family. It just makes things so much more accesible, especially if you have multiple stops and things to pick up. While Costco is not the norm for us, (in terms of how much groceries we buy at once) it serves as a great example of keeping things accesible ie. the stroller, when you have other things in your trunk space. When not in use you can lay it flat on floor of the cargo space. I really cannot beleive most SUV's do not have this and want more people to ask for it.

Of all the traditional automakers, Honda tends to stand out in terms of interior conveniences. No surprise that your CR-V has that handy cargo partition.

IMO Tesla should aim to meet and then exceed Honda in this category.

    • Since this thread started I put a couple deposits down on the Model X (Sig and GenProd). This post summarizes my options really well. I want to keep the X for 10+ years (ie. expect capacity loss over time). I really would like to travel in this vehicle and be able to go off the SuperCharger/SC path a little and come back on. I'd certainly pay extra for the 100-120 kWh battery options.

I'd like to add my voice in favor of the following:

    Important
    - Fold-flat and optionally removable 2nd and 3rd row seating (as shown at the reveal)
    - USB charging ports at every seat that offer 2-amp capability EACH
    - 100 and 120 KWh battery options (I'd get the 120 for sure, my ideal Tesla needs >=300 miles of rated range)
    - Much, much more storage than what Model S offers (esp. door pockets, rear-of-seat pockets)
    - Optional tow hitch with decent capacity
    - Multiple cargo-net attachment points in trunk and frunk (with, of course, optional nets available)
    - Coat hangers
    - Drink holders AT EVERY SEAT
    - HUD! It's a HUGE safety benefit
    - Headlights that swivel to follow the road better (again, a good safety improvement)

    Nice To Have
    - USB and 12V power in trunk and frunk
    - Heated and cooled seats
    - Drink cooler/warmer near driver's seat
    - Smart cruise control (adaptive, plus energy conserving)
    - Driver memory should remember tons of things: map/app preferences, Slacker user/pass, mirror and seat position... lots of stuff.
    - 100% LED lighting in the whole car
    - Optional powerful extra lights for rural driving
    - Slightly tighter minimum turn radius than Model S

What do you do when you and your family want to go Skiing and there's no place to put your skis?

Also for those owners who live in winter climates?? How do you remove Snow and Ice from the top of the vehicle?? You won't be able to open the falcon doors?
  • Dec 9, 2013

When the door handles extend they can break through a layer of ice, I suspect the Falcon doors will be able to do the same. I am sure the Tesla engineers have thought through that scenario.

I don't know how realistic it is, but if the air suspension could have more travel, I think that could be useful in the MX. I wholeheartedly am for USB or at least 12v adapters all around. I'd rather have those than rear-seat entertainment. Perhaps most important, however, is a fully sorted out HVAC that really works for 2nd/3rd row passengers. Miserable munchkins in the back= no bueno.

My buddy and I are two Model S owners in Colorado, and both are balloon pilots. He uses a Toyota Land Cruiser and I use a Toyota FJ as our two vehicles for our balloon trailers. We both know that it is a huge aerodynamic and range hit to tow a trailer, and understand the issues. Still a typical balloon flight morning is drive 5 miles to the launch site. The chase crew stops for coffee after we launch, they then follow us and perhaps knock on some doors to get land owner permission for us to land (5-15 miles), drive to a place to have more coffee and breakfast with crew and passengers (5-10 miles), drive back home (5 miles). That is a typical mission of 20-40 miles. A Model X rated to tow a 1,500 lb trailer would be sooooo.... cool for this!

I also own a cute little "Windrider" trimaran. Total weight on the trailer is less than 800 lb and its about 25 miles to the local res. I have some AGMs and a 24 Volt, macho trolling motor on the trimaran for getting in and out of the launch ramp. Towing this sailboat to the res with an EV, using electric power to get past the break water, and then have a wind powered day would be the ultimate.

Please, Tesla put a 2" receiver hitch option on the Model X with a greater than 1,500 lb trailer limit. It is a Utility Vehicle.

Also, I want a 100+ kW-hr option for my Model X to get a range as good as my MS 85.

. . . oh, and a lower price. Which is my attempt at humor and might be funnier if you read the compendia of all the stuff we want listed on the previous page. As Ocelot says, post 156 is a re-hash grouping of everything so far in the thread.

I've seen a lot of these things singled out in Model S discussions, as features that "should be on" a $100k (or $70k or whatever) automobile, and if Tesla was a company like, that made cars like old established brands, I would probably agree, BUT . . .
If the Model X is already a $100k car, I really don't want it to cost even more because it's so loaded down w things I didn't need or don't want. Mostly I'm thinking about the category we call "Driver Assist" which consists entirely of things I would call "the Driver"
Seriously, this is being written by someone who doesn't even know what Adaptive Cruise Control even is!

Tesla is no doubt capable of adding most any gadgetry to the car, and Jerome and others have said there will be a lot of cool new tech on the X (hopefully some stuff we haven't even thought of  !) I guess what I would like is ala carte options galore to choose from. But Really: 1) Goes Fast. 2) Looks Cool. 3) Doesn't Burn Gas. about covers it

I'd like to see the middle row of seats be easily removable to provide a large contiguous open space. Sometimes fold-down seats aren't enough; not everything we want to haul is shaped like the 2001 monolith. In our case it would be to make room for a very large service dog and so she doesn't have to climb into the vehicle.

Also, anchor points in the floor to secure the large bulky items you now have room to transport.

Better road noise isolation than the Model S currently has. My wife and I have test driven a P85s Model S and came away with the same opinion, outstanding in so many ways but needed a little more work on noise isolation. That said we reserved a Model X (res 6545) the same day.

Some brighter and more colorful exterior paint options than the Model S offers. In particular, the "glacier blue" from the Roadster would be nice.

aside from standard or suicide back doors as an alternative to the Falcon doors, I would like to see lumbar only seat heating as an option on both the X and the S. Being able to choose one or the other or both would be great.

Very unlikely to happen. Cost, complexity, etc. This is one area where I think you'll have to come up with your own solution.

Adding a HAL2 J1772 receptacle on the opposite side reflector. Tesla charging is superior, that is a proven fact, but there are now thousands of J1772 stations out there, many of which are high amperage.

Mount the second and third row seat from the side so that they are suspended above the floor (the old VW vanagons had this idea) so that you can slide large items, like a 4x8 sheet, underneath all the seats without having to fold or remove them

    My wishlist:
    - Leg room for 6' people in the second and third row seats (especially the second row)
    - Removable (optional even) third row seats
    - Allow second row seats to move far back for additional leg room when third row is remove
    - Allow second row seats to recline (some)
(I now, there seems to be a thread here. Back row leg and headroom is too limited in the S imho)
    - Keep the falcon wing doors (was confirmed by Elon so not an issue)
    - The side cameras would be cool. I saw the pictures where the images of these were displayed left and right on the driver display. I wonder if this will interfere with the usability of the driver display functions
    - Rear View camera displayed in the rearview "mirror". This way it doesn't matter how many are sitting behind the driver, you can still see what is behind you
    - Cup holders for at least the first and second rows. Preferably one that can hold a mug with a handle.
    - High power USB ports in at least the first and second rows
    - Charging port on the passenger side. (easier in my garage and at some public charging stations)
    - Fully adjustable seats (with separate height in front and back of the seat) for both the driver and the passenger in the first row
    - Cooled seats (or at least ventilated)

Some very cool things to see:
    - Dimmable glass (instead of permanent tinting).
    - Autopilot :)

Something small IIRC - like hardware missing to locate the position of multiple fobs in the car in a more precise way to tell a fob going in thru one door versus the other; purses resting in the middle etc.
Beyond your question, I always posited a driver-cam with face recog would make it easy too and the hardware could be used for sleepyhead detection, eye position and other features like head tracking. Head tracking is very interesting for HUDs and camera-driven mirror views (a little primer here).

Interesting idea. It may not work well enough for people who have other drivers who are significantly shorter than they are. I can't even get Into the car when the seat is set for my wife. She's 4'8". The seat would need to adjust before the camera saw me.

I would really like a dvd player, heated seats for all of them including the 6&7 ones. I would also like the model x to have enough room for the falcon doors because im concerned about that. I also would like a mini refrigerator and microwave in the back (for road trips) that would be da bomb and also a trash bag holder. Also what is the price for model x fully upgraded

That would be useful for those times when I unplug the charging cable and get into the car and then realize I forgot to close the charging port cover. But it would require a major redesign if that port cover.

I don't have a model s, but another EV, and even after years there's a % of times i load the car unplug sit in and ... Sigh , charge port open. Sometimes at home when things are hectic (dogs etc) or when getting in the car has distractions (eg grocery stuff guests etc)
It's a predictable irksome event that happens to me and it's resolvable with solid state hardware.

I have no idea why, but I manage to do this more often than I'd care to admit as well. I'm getting better but it's not typical for me to dork up common routines like this and yet I do.

    woof
Yes, yes it does. Like at superchargers when one person presses the button all the cars hear it, and they all open. Or when the UMC was acting up and sending random "open" signals even though no one was touching it. That one drove us crazy for a few months until Tesla figured it out.

If it auto opens, it should auto close.

Not auto closing is one of the head scratchers on the Model S. When right next to the flap, you press a button on the UMC and it opens. You're right there, it wouldn't be hard to open in manually, but you cannot. However, if you forget to close it (or your oh so helpful child who loves to unplug the car but always forgets to close the flap leaves it open for the Nth time), and you're seated in the car with the seat belt on, you throw it into reverse and the car beeps and you suddenly notice the flap is still open. Gaah. Now you have to stop the car, get out, close the flap, get back in, buckle up. And then the broken UMC randomly flips it open again!

It should auto close. Or just be spring loaded so that it's always closed until the plug is inserted and prevents it from closing.

This is my FIRST post here, one thing I'd like to see would be a trailer package. I called Tesla about this option but couldn't get any info on whether it's being considered. I tow a single axle enclosed trailer with my Harley inside using my Toyota Highlander Hybrid and don't see a need in keeping it if the Model X had this capability. Now to place my order for the "X".....

    AC Power Out

An option to get AC Power out would be great. 1-2 kW is a minimum, and an option for 12 kW, 120/240 Volts out with 5-20, L14-X (generator connector), and L14-50 connections. The 12 kW, 14-50 option would allow an MX to aide another Tesla with a 10 kW emergency charge via a UMC.

I so totally agree. I thought about this many times - one Tesla should be able to share some of its charge with another Tesla. That would make it so much easier to help someone who ran out of battery short of a charging spot... and much easier than needing a flat-bed...

I can only imagine how amazing these features would look on Tesla's giant interior display screen.

It would also be great to have dual sun visors for the driver and front passenger (so one could be used on the side window and the other for the front window when on a curvy road on a sunny day). A lot of high-end cars used to have these, but they're inexplicably very rare, now.

I expect that this will be standard in the Model X. LTE baseband chips are fairly mature and common these days, so I can't see why Tesla wouldn't use them.
  • Apr 29, 2014
    pthill65
The reason that occurs to me that Tesla might not use them is perhaps it gets 3g coverage cheaply and LTE would cost more. Since they are footing the bill for now....
