harcocjh Well I just got a quote from Esurance and my premium would go from 600 to 1340 every 6 months. I was hoping to get a 70D in about a year so hopefully premiums go down by then...otherwise I might have to reconsider as it was already going to be stretching my budget a bit. Maybe I'll just have to get a 2016 chevy volt to tie me over until the model 3. I guess we'll see but I'm a little sad that my dream is just a little bit further away today. :/

Apr 23, 2015
lg_golfs So, I just got off the phone with USAA. My rate is the same as Geico $1900 / yr. However, its quoted in 6 month chunks. I must have been informed or heard wrong the first time when I thought it was $900/yr.
The interesting thing he told me is the 70D is more expensive right now than other Teslas and that is because they have no data on it. No crash tests, safety ratings, etc. He blames this on the car being so new and said he strongly feels that rate will drop once they get more data on the car.
This might explain why my AAA rate on this car was so much more expensive than the AAA quote I got on an 85 just weeks earlier.
Apr 24, 2015
CHGolferJim Are you saying USAA is charging more for the 70D than the 85D?! :scared:
Apr 24, 2015
Max* I quoted upgrading to an 85D with Geico a few weeks ago, and they said it'll raise my rates by ~$280/6months.
I quoted the 70D last night with Geico (I don't have my VIN yet, and they don't have a 70D in their database yet), and rated changed by ~$150/6months.
Apr 24, 2015
Ride Long I don't know about that, but USAA just quoted me $965 for 6 months (driving 15k per year, suburban Maryland outside DC) on a 70D which will be about a $165 increase over what I am paying now for a 2014 Audi A6 TDI. Seems within the realm of reason to me.
Apr 25, 2015
Xenius I got quoted1,367.56 per six months through USAA with a 2013 Civic Si, 2011 Subaru Forester, AND adding the Model S 70D.It's something like 950 with just the model S and Forester.
?
Apr 26, 2015
CHGolferJim I've found recently that the cost shown per car with multiple cars and teenagers/early 20s drivers can be somewhat arbitrary. Some of the risk premium for the younger drivers is allocated across the vehicles. From our 4-person 4-car policy, selling a 2003 Chrysler minivan and going to 3 vehicles saved $1k/yr.
Apr 29, 2015
Spud4343 First post so please be gentle.
My 85D is in transit so its time to check for insurance and was pleasantly surprised. Optioned only with the tech package and subzero package 100/300 insurance through State Farm is $314.54 every six months. This is less than the 2012 Infiniti M35h that it is replacing. Ohio is usually pretty cheap when it comes to auto insurance.
Apr 29, 2015
JunesongProvisn My first post too! I got quoted $1400 annually for my P85D. Should be receiving it at the end of May.

Cyclone Added the "new" Tesla to my auto-policy. For the Tesla part of the policy, adding to my NC Traveler's Policy came to $1,401 for one year. The breakdown is as follows:
- Collision w/ $500 deductible
- Comprehensive w/ $500 deductible
- Liability @ $250k/$500k
- Property Damage @ $100k
- Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Liability @ $250k/$500k
- Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Property @ $100k
- Multi-car discount (Tesla is a car addition, not a replacement)
- Multi-policy (home) discount
The same coverage on my 2006 Toyota 4Runner for one year by itself (without multi-car discount) was $1,010 for a year. Note, on the line-item breakdown, Liability and Property Damage on the Tesla is cheaper than the Toyota, but Comprehensive and Collision are significantly higher (more than half of my total quote).
I believe I am getting a good discount for having two cars, but only one driver. Basically, 4Runner only = $1,010, 4Runner + Model S = $2,063.
May 12, 2015
kyalami I just added my CPO P85 to my Allstate policy as a third car. 1200/yr. with $500 deductible. I was not unhappy with that.

JMG Everyone make sure you have enough uninsured/underinsured motorist property damage limits. There are not a high percentage of drivers in america that have enough liability property damage to replace a Tesla.
May 26, 2015
boonedocks Just swapped out my insurance from a 2013 Ford C-Max SEL to my, soon to be 85D, and my yearly rate went up $334 to a total of $949 annually. I have a large umbrella policy so it requires me to have very high coverage so I feel pretty good about that rate.
May 26, 2015
InsaneDriver Miami has ridiculous insurance rates to begin with, so my 1 year quote from Geico at $1,800 doesn't actually sound all that bad. My other 2 vehicles are about the same combined. I had other quotes that were much higher than this as I shopped around to make sure I wasn't about to over-pay.
Jun 1, 2015
ModelS1079 I need to check my rates, to be sure they have not increased using Geico, as they have for some, noted above.
However, I couldn't be more pleased with the way Geico handled recent repair work on my car, increasing the amount needed to fix the car at the repair company's request, no quibbles. The work was done well. Very pleased.
So, Geico good by me. Great, actually.
Jun 1, 2015
AMPd Got a quote from AAA, 2k for 6 months
They were the lowest out of State Farm, farmers, Geico and Allstate.
Honestly I thought it would be a lot more than 2k, I'm 24 and have 1 speeding ticket, 70D in transit!
Jun 3, 2015
S4WRXTTCS It's astonishing how different the rates are across the country. This thread had me bit frightened, and so I held off on getting an estimate until two days before I pick up my 70D. I know Seattle has some of the worst drivers in the entire country so it's funny to see the cheaper insurance rates being in Washington State.
The quote from state farm came out to be pretty much the exact same as I'm already paying for a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. It's around $450 for 6 months. Now keep in mind that's an addition to the Jeep Wrangler which I'm keeping.
So my total monthly bill will be around $170 total for both cars including Umbrella coverage that I added today as well. Pretty standard coverage nothing insanely high or insanely low.
I'm go glad they don't actively monitor how I drive or they'd never give me such inexpensive insurance.
Now for the hard part.
Avoiding tickets in a Tesla might be impossible for me. I use the 10mph over rule and that works for where I live. I don't go on major road trips so the opportunity doesn't really exist except if I make a mistake of if I just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
But, as soon as I get outside of this bubble all bets are off.
I'll probably get hauled off to jail for giving a cop an earful when he pulls me over for 5mph over.
Jun 4, 2015
Pilot_51 My early childhood (until age 8) was in Snohomish. I remember when we went down to California to visit grandpa, my dad was pulled over in Oregon for going 65 in a 55, but he was only given a warning.
The 10 over rule applies here as well. Everyone goes 10 over on the highways and I'm a firm believer in matching the average speed of traffic for safety. Going fast for the sake of speed isn't really in my blood. If I get pulled over, it would probably be for rapid acceleration (it's addictive!), even though I level off at no more than 10 over.

Law&Disorder Mine is quite high even with numerous discounts $3,477 per year.
Just as a data point, I was talking to the owner of the body shop where I get my car hand washed and he told me that he had done work on a damaged Model S that a long time customer had brought in. Tesla wasn't happy about him doing the work instead of having it done by a Tesla-authorized shop, but eventually agreed to honor the customer's preference and allowed him to order parts. The body shop owner told me that Tesla OEM body parts were the most expensive he had ever dealt with. And this is a shop that works on Rolls Royces and Ferraris on a regular basis.
It's obviously only anecdotal information and I didn't ask to see the invoices or anything, but perhaps there's a very good reason why our cars are so expensive to insure.
Jun 18, 2015
Max* That's a blanket statement. I don't think my insurance is high.
My car insurance raised by $150/6months going from a 9+ year old non-luxury car to the Tesla.
Jun 18, 2015
EarlyAdopter I'm sure there's a very good reason your car is so expensive to insure, but it isn't the car.
I'm paying $1100 per year to insure my P85D with max coverages (Progressive).
Jun 18, 2015
Law&Disorder It's obviously going to vary by state and insuring a car in the metropolitan New York area is notoriously expensive so that's part of the difference. My 2013 BMW M5 (which priced out at $105,000) was around $3200 a year to insure.
Jul 1, 2015
mattwhite I'm picking up my P85D on Monday in Houston, TX. Farmers wants $3,950/yr to insure it, and I've been with them 14 years and insure everything with them! That's about double what Farmers charges me to insure my 2014 McLaren 12C Spider!!! Made some calls and GEICO ended up being the best - $1,240 annually.
Jul 1, 2015
Cyclone Whew. That is quite the difference! It definitely pays to shop around!
Jul 1, 2015
AB4EJ Oh yes, it is always wise to get at least 3 quotes when shopping for insurance. Further, even if you have an insurer that you are satisfied with, it still is wise to re-quote your entire package at least every other year, especially if you have seen a premium increase. Insurers know that most people don't like this shopping process and will raise rates a bit each year to increase profits - most people will stick with insurer. There is even a little mathematical-psychological science that helps them figure out how much they can raise rates before too many people jump ship to make it profitable overall.

Jul 2, 2015
slevit1md I will be paying around $1150-1200/yr for the 85D's insurance. I just got a new quote from my insurance company and the Tesla adds about $200 over my 2012 X5. Not bad, considering the Tesla is brand new, probably more expensive to fix, and costs about $35,000 more new. I use Liberty Mutual.
Jul 2, 2015
Armadillos That's weird, GEICO wanted $5,000/year to insure my Tesla 70D.
Jul 2, 2015
Max* I'm sure it also has to do with accidents, tickets, coverage, location, age, etc. But I was shocked at how cheap it was to insure it. Other insurance providers were maybe 1.5x-2x more (closer to $1-1.2k to insure it).
Jul 23, 2015
Tampaukfan Got my renewal from Amica, rate went from 3600 a year for my 2015 85D/2013 Subaru to $4055. Called and asked why and was given a song and dance about future hurricanes etc... Started shopping other companies and was told by several brokers that some insurers are refusing Model S business, Mercury being one of them.
Ended up switching to Travelers, gave me the same price I was paying with Amica. The other carriers I checked with varied from $3700 to $5000, Liberty Mutual being the highest. Oddly, Safeco which is a Liberty Mutual company wanted $3700.
I am being surcharged, about $600 for an accident that I was not at fault in from 2013.

CHGolferJim Any comps in NC, especially the Triangle?
Jul 24, 2015
JMG As it's been said over and over, it varies vastly from state to state, even zipcode to zipcode. I'm an agent and I shopped my own coverage and used every trick in the book, and I'm still paying $1500 a year with Safeco. And I know how to keep my record and claims history as squeaky clean as possible.
Other factors to consider is liability limits (I carry $500,000 combined single limit with a $1 million umbrella), uninsured motorist, renters (which I highly recommend since repairs take SO long on the Model S...I learned from first hand experience), deductibles, etc etc.
Jul 24, 2015
Kosmo $1300/year. 70D. Minneapolis. Clean record and multiple policies, also long standing policyholder (>10years) with State Farm.
Jul 24, 2015
TheAccuser I as quoted $1150 through my current carrier (Cincinnati Insurance) for a $125,000 MSRP 2015 Model S P85D in Ohio. I ended up ordering an 85D that came in at $104,000 so my premium should come in a little less than that.

CHGolferJim I don't have an "apples and apples" comp of the isolated cost of adding a new 70D due to complicated circumstances, but here's what I did today with USAA (long-term customer and multiple policies) in case it helps anyone:
- previously 3 cars (2007 Sienna, 2008 Prius, 2002 Merc CLK conv.) and 3 drivers (58, 58, 19 male)
- adding Tesla and a 4th driver (23 y.o. daughter returning from a year abroad and off-policy) with same low deductibles = $3,000 to $4,800
- raising collision and comprehensive deductibles to $1,000 = down to $4,000
- net change of adding a 4th car and a 4th driver and lowering deductibles = +$1,000 (34%)
I'm guessing the impact of the 70D by itself is $900-$1,200/yr.
Dec 3, 2015
Max* Have you shopped around? My 70D insurance is about 50% of that per year (yeah yeah, different circumstances, blah blah blah)
Dec 3, 2015
jsm I am also with USAA. Mine is around $1600 a year - my big problem is that I have two 16 year old drivers on our policy, which is not fun. Frighteningly, the Leaf that they drive is more than the cost of the Tesla insurance. They have to be on all of the cars we own, since they maybe, one day, might possibly, drive the Tesla - which I will not let them drive.
Dec 3, 2015
andrewket This varies by state. Some states will allow drivers to be excluded from specific cars, others won't. Virginia doesn't, so we have the same problem that you do. However, $1600/year is CHEAP. I'm paying $2300? or something like that every 6 months for 4 cars, and 3 drivers.
Dec 3, 2015
CuriousG I'm with USAA also. Just make sure you enter in the VIN# and it will think it's a P85/85. I was too clever for my own good and decided to manually enter a 70D. After playing with the different types of coverages for all 4 cars it would've been about $400 more each 6/mos. I took off comp/coll on a '96 Nissan PU that still has like 67k miles on it. I jacked up the comp/coll on the replacement car to $1000 same as Tesla. Well when it came time to submit it asked for the VIN# again. Oh crap! I was expecting it to be more expensive than the $400 it had originally quoted me. Enter in VIN and it thinks it's a P85/85 and gave me 6mo figure of only $118 more than what I was paying.
Dec 4, 2015
CHGolferJim
I spent almost 2 hours on the phone with USAA yesterday on all sorts of things. The first question the auto guy asked was the VIN #. I deal with certain vendors online, but prefer to talk to USAA as they have well-trained, knowledgeable and nice staff. If I pay a slight premium, so be it.

trils0n Since my insurance renewal was coming up, I figured I'd check the Esurance website to see how my premium had changed. Not happy to say the least. No claims, no accidents, no tickets.
Last 6-month premium: $833.99
New 6-month premium: $2,870.99
After speaking with 2 customer service people and a licensed agent, they don't know why my rate has increased so much, and have submitted it for review. Will supposedly hear back in 24-48hrs with their findings. I assume I will end up shopping for a new insurance co.
Feb 10, 2016
Cyclone My insurance in NC with Travelers went up by only a few dollars compared to the full premium last year (I get yearly policies, and the Tesla was added about 5 months in the year, but I got the rate then what a full year would have been). Still $1,800 for one driver, two vehicles with $650-700 or so being for the ICE.
Feb 10, 2016
hybridbear That's crazy!!!! Please keep us posted.
Feb 12, 2016
trils0n "The increase to your premium is the result of an update to our vehicle rating criteria. We periodically receive data updates from the national vehicle database, which helps us ensure that were maintaining accurate and fair premiums for the vehicles our customers insure.
Unfortunately, with this update the premium of $2870.99 is currently the lowest we can offer with your current coverage and policy selections."
Time for new ins co. $2000 increase with no claims, accidents, tickets, or changes to policy is insane. Wish me luck. Will send an email to Tesla as well.

neroden Location dominates over practically everything else (even accident history!) for car insurance.
GEICO just ramped up everyone's rates in NY a lot; I switched to Erie and saved several hundred per year, though State Farm also gave a competitive quote.
Mar 2, 2016
iffatall I have been using Geico, and paying ~$950 for six months. (Probably because of no insurance history - this is my first car).
This Feb, they increased my premium to ~$1030. I called them, they said because I lost a "new car discount" now that my car is more than two years old, and that they reviewed the premium based on the repair costs of the vehicle being updated with more info!
Still the cheapest among everyone else I queried.
Mar 2, 2016
nanimac Allstate raised my rates by over $250 to nearly $700/6 months so I shopped around and got even better coverage with Progressive for about $400 for 6 months...when I called Allstate to let them know I was switching...they basically said..oh...yeah, it's an expensive car to insure...didn't even bother to try to lower my payment...
Mar 2, 2016
rog But isn't the $400 an introductory rate? I read the small print, and the biggest portion of the applied discount is the "initial online sign up discount" or something along these lines. I bet the rates go up once the first 6 months have passed...
Mar 2, 2016
nanimac You're right but the rate before the online discount was $535 so still cheaper than Allstate.
Mar 2, 2016
John Stuckey Things can always change but our December 2015 P90DL costs a little more than the 2004 Sienna XLE it replaces - State Farm. No accidents, old drivers, $1000 deductible, house and umbrella bundled.
Mar 7, 2016
FakeStewartAlsop I just got off the phone with my State Farm agent, asking for Texas quote on a new
Model S70 with minimum Liability coverage, and a deductible of $500 for Collision/Comprehensive. Quote is for $1766 annually. Now I posed this puzzler to them. Say my S70 is charging overnight at a hotel, and despite parking in a well lit location, I had to resort to charge on a slow-pokey wall outlet with an extension cord AND, I wake up in the morning to find a note on my windshield that somebody tripped over the cable overnight, and is suing for miscellaneous injuries -- is it covered? Their answer: no. So, I've got that to add to my range anxiety.
Mar 7, 2016
ArtInCT This is why there are things like a Liability Umbrella....
Mar 7, 2016
zwede I'm also in Dallas and found Travelers to be much more reasonable than State Farm. I pay $660/6 months with maxed out liability ($300K or $500K, I forget). I then have a $1M umbrella on top for $160/year.
Mar 7, 2016
JMG Why in the world would you be considering minimum liability coverage (30/60/25) owning a Tesla? Or was that just for comparison purposes? Hopefully your agent implored you to consider higher limits.
As far as the tripping, like what hybridbear said, if it wasn't covered under your auto insurance hopefully you have a personal liability insurance somewhere (homeowners or renters policy) with an umbrella over and above that for your personal negligence.
Mar 7, 2016
nsxdavid So, I insured my Tesla with Shelter Insurance. A local Missouri company.
They were more than happy to take my money for the premiums, but when it came time to make a claim.... well then I learned how much not doing your homework on an insurance company can cost you.
Suffice it to say, the difference between what it costs to repair my Model S and what the insurance is trying to pay me is steep! I knew I was in trouble when the Tesla Service Center called me (on an unrelated matter) and I let them know I was having insurance issues, and the guy says (unprompted) "It isn't Shelter is it?"
The major crux of the issue is the difference in labor rates for the one (and only one) Tesla certified body shop in the St. Louis area. Nearest other shops are in Chicago or Kansas City and also have labor rates much higher than other shops. Which makes sense, there's training, tooling, etc. that goes into that certification.
The insurance payout is going to end up, at this point, about $5K off, perhaps more, on a roughly $18K repair. It took them like three weeks to even come to the conclusion to pay that much.
Anyone else had an insrance nightmare like this?
