zax123 @nkohlimd, can you please share which wire you used from the headlight? Is there an electrical diagram floating around somewhere? I'd like to do the same. And by headlight, do you mean the LEDs that surround the headlight? They change intensity whether the DRL or headlights or on, did that affect anything?
Also, I wanted to add (for all) that I didn't sand my T enough so there are still bright spots. It's really important to keep sanding so the light diffuses really well.
Nov 27, 2013
artsci Glad it went well. The new version will have finished matte surfaces so there will be no need to do sanding. The instructions will have all of the wiring options - headlight, parking light control, remote, Homelink, etc.
There's other good news. I discovered today that the recommended Oznium remote synchs with HomeLink and it was no problem. Worked the first time from the front of the car, as per Tesla's touchscreen instructions. No need to mess around trying to sync with the remote in the frunk.
Also have the some 3D drawings of the final PCB/LED design, which is in production now. Here they are:

contaygious Anyone have a pic from farther away? Looks good so far!
Nov 27, 2013
zax123 Hi Rick!
That PCB design looks awesome. Is that Oznium that's doing that for you? And it will just snap into the 3D printed T and arch? Very cool!
Is there a new Oznium remote recommended that I missed? I am using that Oracle one. I have yet to try linking it to Homelink...
Nov 27, 2013
artsci Yes, I now have a very good relationship with Oznium and they've been very supportive. Not the case with Oracle. Oznium is making the LED PCBs and they will fit into the T and arch precisely. I'm now discussing with them making an injection molded plastic version of the T and arch, which at volume production is much more efficient than 3D printing and could lower costs substantially.
I've had a very bad experience with the Oracle remotes (six failures with six units). Not the case with the Oznium remote.
Nov 27, 2013
artsci This is the longest shot I have.

Nov 29, 2013
artsci Our per-order reservation list is now at 40. If you're seriously interested in this mod I would suggest getting your name on the list as the first production run will be only 50. When we get over 50 I'll then consider a second run of 50 if the demand appears to be there.
Dec 2, 2013
artsci We're now up to 50 on the pre-order list. Once we get to 75 I'll put in a production order for another 50. So if you're interested and your name is not on the list of 50 add it anyway so I can gauge demand looking ahead.
Dec 3, 2013
drtko147 I would recommend posting a video on the installation to help us DIY'ers.
Dec 3, 2013
artsci Good idea. I won't finish the instructions until I have the new T in hand. I'm going to install it on my car first, so I'll take a video of that.
BTW I just heard from Oznium. They expect to ship me the first sample of PCB's on Thursday Dec 12th. Once I confirm that all is OK the will start production of the 50, and hopefully will have them done in about 7 to 10 days. So we're now talking about deliveries to everybody in January.
Dec 4, 2013
dratifk artsci I think a lot of people are interested like me but we are waiting to see if this is a project we can handle on our own. I for one would only do this if I can do it myself. I would only be interested in wiring it directly to the headlights - less complicated that way not interested in having a remote. Will wait for installation video
Dec 4, 2013
rekoh I will post an installation video Once i get my kit. (Ultimately want white T for front, and red T for back). Maybe even get a free setup for my efforts?

Dec 4, 2013
artsci We'll include headlight wiring in the installation instructions and video.
Dec 6, 2013
artsci These photos came in last night from the Oznium team in Hong Kong. The very even lighting effect is exactly what I was hoping to achieve.
The PCB's are in production and we're talking now about injection molding the arch and T, which could result in a cost reduction and make for much more rapid manufacture than 3D printing. I hope to have all of this worked out by Monday, including the final price.
My goal is to have Oznium do the full manufacture and assembly, as its team in Hong Kong is quite skilled and the attention to detail very impressive.

aaron.s Looks Amazing Rick!
Aaron
Dec 6, 2013
brianman Looks good but (nitpicker's corner warning!) it looks like one more LED would retain the lighting to the bottom point better. Or maybe just slide the bottom two LEDs down by half an LED length.
Dec 6, 2013
artsci I've already added another there. We just can't squeeze any more in.
Dec 6, 2013
dratifk This looks great.
Dec 6, 2013
artsci Thanks. It looks like I'll be able to lower the price substantially. I'll be able to confirm next seek. It's all about economies of scale, so the more we have on the list the better.
Dec 13, 2013
artsci Some of you on the waiting list have been asking when these will be ready. I'm continuing to make some improvements before full production will begin. Oznium is shifting the location of some of the LEDs to get more even light at the tip of the T stem and the outer edges of the T cross bar and arches. I also have to make a decision about whether we use 3d printing or injection molding to make the T and arch. I'm inclined to do the latter although it will require a sizable initial capital investment. But with volume it should result in a lower price. Problem is making the injection mold will add more time to the project. I'll be making the key decisions about all of this next week and will have a better idea about production and delivery then.
Dec 13, 2013
umuhk Would deposits from those on the waiting list help defray the start-up costs? Honestly, if the price were any lower than the range you've already been floating, I'd be happy to just pre-order at full price if it would kickstart the project.
Dec 13, 2013
artsci A nice offer but it's not necessary and won't affect my decision. I think the most convenient and reliable way to go is to have Oznium do it all. My experience with them has been outstanding and they are concerned most of all about quality.
Dec 14, 2013
Mark Petersen Have you considered making it a kickstarter project
Simply as a quick way to fund it
Dec 14, 2013
artsci I have the funding so it's not really an issue. I probably should have not said anything about the capital cost. My real concern is that making the injection mold will add a month or more to production time.
Dec 15, 2013
artsci Just made the final production arrangements with Oznium. We're going to make these via an injection mold instead of 3D printing. That will lower the cost to $165.00 plus about $10.00 for shipping and handling. The LED PCB will be waterproofed and sealed within the T and arch. For easier installation each will come with custom 3M double faced tape on both sides. The kit will be delivered completely assembled, making installation very easy. The T and arch will be guaranteed for the life of the car with a no-questions-asked return policy.
Production will begin at the end of next week. Creating the injection mold will take some time, and Oznium anticipates delivery in 2 - 2 1/2 months.
I'm going to start working on complete installation instructions. But this will be quite easy. All that will be required is removal of the nose cone, drilling of two small holes in the nose cone in the areas behind the T and arch so the wires can be run through, removal of the chrome T and arch with dental floss, then attaching the lighted T and arch and the original Tesla pieces to the nose cone with the 3M tape (just pressing them on will do the trick) and powering the device through a tap to a fuse or the headlight/running light power (simple wiring connections) For those who want special effects, the Oznium 12 volt LED dimmer and strobe remote switch, which syncs with HomeLink, can be ordered along with the kit at a discount and easily wired into the system.
We have about 60 on the waiting list now. The first production run will be for everyone on that list, no matter how high it goes (manufacturing capacity is not limited).
Dec 18, 2013
RandyY Great! Thanks for the details! Bummer having to wait that long -- but it sounds like this is the best solution.
Dec 18, 2013
artsci I'm not pleased about the wait either but it will be best for the quality and durability of the product.
Dec 20, 2013
brianman How much are you charging for installation at Teslive 2014?
Dec 20, 2013
artsci Nothing, provided the owner assists. It will be a participatory workshop.
Dec 20, 2013
LastNLSig I just spend about an hour reading your thread from beginning to end. Awesome work. Nice to see the progress/evolution.
Nice mod and I will certainly sign up for it.
Might have some commercial/marketing doubts by your choice to go for mould injection. It will only be a good investment if you sell a lot. But it will reduce the exclusivity...
Good luck with the projects on the rear.
Dec 20, 2013
artsci The injection mold is really for quality, durability, and production speed once we get started. There's no idea what kind of demand there will be long term but I may decide to limit production at some point. I don't want this to become commonplace on Model S's.
I'm using the 3D firm for scanning and prototyping. In fact I'll have the first prototype T's for the rear T on Tuesday and work will begin on that.
Dec 20, 2013
umuhk And here I was going to suggest you offer to supply them to Tesla as a build option!
Dec 20, 2013
brianman Even better. Will probably buy you dinner or somethin' though.

Dec 21, 2013
artsci That's a deal!.
Trying to figure out now where I will do these. As I travel a lot on business and don't need my own car to run an installation workshop, it could be just about anywhere where I travel frequently, including China![]()
So I think I'll do the workshops where sales are concentrated. I'm just guessing now but likely northern and southern CA, the DC area, Raleigh NC or thereabouts, Boston, Westchester, NY (where I used to live), south FL. Once the T sales begin in March or so I'll track locations and decide accordingly. This will be a lot of fun for me as I'll meet many other owners and it will make my travel much more interesting. Of course, many owners will be able to do this without help so demand for this kind of thing will also be a factor.
Dec 21, 2013
ggbjr We look forward to having you down here in Raleigh. I'll second that dinner offer!
Dec 21, 2013

Dec 22, 2013
artsci I'll post a workshop schedule as soon as all is ready, likely in March. The first will be here in the Baltimore/DC area, then probably Westchester and Palo Alto. After that not sure.
I'll be installing the prototype rear lighted T in a few weeks. I'm planning to light this one red and set it up so it's in synch with the brake lights: on when they're on and brighter when the brakes are applied. Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Dec 22, 2013
artsci Probably the best thing would be for me to stop there on one of my trips to China. Next one coming up in in early March but the T's may not be out of production then. But as they're being made in Hong Kong I may be about to stop in the factory and pick some up for the trip home. Let's see how this works out as the schedules are finalized. I have personal attachments to Hawaii. My wife lived there three times and attended Punahou. My older son was baptized there and then competed in the Ironman world championships in Kona three times. So many reasons to visit.

4SUPER9 Artsci,
Have you figured out a way to hook this up to the DRL's? Would be nice as a auto-on daytime feature.
Dec 29, 2013
artsci We have. That will be included with the installation instructions, which I'm working on. There will be many options for how they're controlled.
Dec 29, 2013
aaron.s Rick
Is it possible/difficult to rewire my setup to have them turn on with the DRL?

Dec 29, 2013
artsci Sure. Let me first finish the instructions.
Dec 29, 2013
4SUPER9 Rick,
Speaking of attaching to the DRLs, do you have any pics of the lighted T in the daytime? Is it bright enough to see?
Dec 29, 2013
artsci It's really not bright enough to see well in daytime expect on a very overcast, gray day.
Dec 29, 2013
brianman Sound perfect for the northwest.
Jan 18, 2014
artsci Just heard from the Oznium production team in Hong Kong. There are a few production details that need to be resolved before the Chinese New Year begins. But they sent me this photo of the pre-prodcution T lit up. I'm very happy about the evenness of the light. I'm hoping we'll be ready to take final orders and ship in early March. We're planning to manufacture as many as are on the pre-order list as of February 15. At the moment there are about 115 on the list.
Also, I'll be doing a demo installation of the lighted T at @TeslaRoadTrip 2014 - - Feb 15-17, 2014.

zax123 That looks awesome!!
My beta Lighted T unfortunately stopped glowing for the last time last week. I think a little too much water got in there and shorted things out.
I am very much looking forward to the new generation. I got a lot of positive feedback from my T, everybody loved it!
Thanks for keeping this going Rick!
Jan 19, 2014
artsci I think that was a problem with the betas. The new version will be completely waterproof.
Jan 19, 2014
ccbldg artsci, pm'd you
Jan 27, 2014
artsci The pre-production beta arrived from Honk Kong today. I couldn't be more pleased. The quality is outstanding and the light bright and even. I gave the approval for production to begin ASAP. If we're lucky the first 60 will be completed and ready for shipping in about two weeks, much earlier than I expected. The second production run will begin immediately after the Chinese New Year so by mid-March at the latest we'll have enough for everyone on the waiting list.
When we're ready to take formal orders and payment I'll let everyone on the pre-order list know. That will probably be next week. Orders will be placed on the Marketplace page via PayPal. All orders will ship direct from Oznium in the US.
In the meantime I'll complete and post the installation instructions, likely also next week.
Jan 27, 2014

Jan 28, 2014
artsci Just learned this am that the first production run of 60 will ship from Hong Kong to Colorado on Thursday. So the first 60 orders will ship to buyers from Oznium early next week. I will post ordering instructions today and notify all those on the pre-order list. To be fair, orders from those not on the list will not be accepted. The original beta testers are at the top of the list and get theirs free.

4SUPER9 For me, I think I'll just keep it on with the lights and skip the remote. Good to know though.
Will you have the instructions up by Wednesday? That's when my T should arrive and I'd like to do it that night.
Feb 2, 2014
artsci I've changed my mind and will stick with the Oznium device. I've used it with no failures. As these others are all made in China, there's no way to know whether they are knock offs. And they did get some failure reviews.
- - - Updated - - -
The installation instructions are complete.
Feb 2, 2014
rekoh 2 questions:
? Can you wire it to the daytime running lights and the headlights... so that way it will be powered on all the time? .. an just have the oznium strobe powering it as a fun feature for when the car is off ?.....
? If it is powered by the daytime running lights and you power it on with the remote from the oznium will it have any impact?
As for the amazon knockoffs--it looks identical, but understand it may be made in china. I did buy that one, and we can compare to see if they are from the same source.
Feb 2, 2014
SUPRKAR
Yes you can wire to both HOWEVER you will need to install a diode on each circuit to prevent a back feed. A diode will act as a one way valve for the current to flow only to the T and not send current from let's say the daytime lamps to the headlights. A little tricky buy can be done.
Feb 2, 2014
rekoh I am a little confused.. sorry.
If I wire it to the daytime lights and the headlights, wont it only be receiving power from one or the other, hence no conflict?
Is it the conflict going to be when it is powered by daytime (or headlamp) AND the led remote controller (potentially causing an issue)?
- - - Updated - - -
I guess the real question/goal here is:
how can I have it powered on whenever the car is on, and not have to physically turn it on and off by pressing a button (I plan on using the oznium controller) but I still want to have the ability to use the special effects of the unit if I want... any suggestions??
Feb 2, 2014
4SUPER9 Rick,
Minor point: On Step 3 of the instructions, it says to drill a hole on the "right". You mean "your right",correct? As technically, isn't that the left side of the nose cone?
Feb 3, 2014
artsci Yes, the driller's right. Those are the small holes in the nose cone indentation for the T and arch. There's also a photo showing where the holes should be:

Feb 3, 2014

Feb 3, 2014
andrewket Mine arrived today but I'm waiting on some parts from Amazon.
Feb 3, 2014
mknox Mine is either at home or on its way (I am out of town) but I think installation may have to wait for warmer weather.
Feb 3, 2014
rekoh Any electrical folks want to take a crack at answering this?
Feb 3, 2014
artsci If you use the set up for the Oznium controller it has to be powered on and off with the remote or Homelink. I don't think there's a way to wire it to both the Oznium controller and the headlamps but let me think about it.
Feb 3, 2014
rekoh is there a 12v power supply that is on when the car is on.. so whenever the car is on, the lighted T is on... would be the other question..
Feb 4, 2014
artsci I search for a switched fuse that turns on with the car power system but haven't been able to find one. The installation instructions recommend use of Fuse F47 in Fuse Box #2 to supply power to the Oznium controller, which in turn operates the lighted T. But with that set up the T has to be turned on and off with the Oznium remote or Homelink, if the remote has been synched with Homelink.
If the T was direct wired to that fuse it would always be on.
Feb 4, 2014
andrewket Can the oznium controller be programmed to default to on? You could then power the controller from the headlights. Default action would be the T comes on but you could still use the controller for special effects. Default last state would work too.
Feb 4, 2014
artsci Regrettably, it can't.
Feb 4, 2014
rekoh Will fuse F47 only be powered when the car is 'on'... meaning.. if you hook up the oznium controller to the F47, and manually power it on with homelink(or remote), when you walk away (aka turn the car off) will the T automatically turn off? (meaning: will fuse F47 then cut power to the oznium controller)... so that way I do not have to remember to turn it off, just have to remember to turn it on.
*****
On a side note... USPS tracking number says my lighted T was delivered yesterday, but I did not get any mail yesterday. GRRR. Called sorting facility for USPS, and they will 'look for it, but have been having a lot of problems lately' :cursing:
Feb 4, 2014
artsci No that is an always on connection and it does not shut off when you walk away from the car. So you have to use Homelink or the remote to shut off the T. I park outside with the car facing out while it's charging. So I leave the T on overnight. It draws so little current that there's no measurable drain on the battery.
Feb 4, 2014
drtko147 However, if you do a hook up to the headlights, it will only come on with the headlights, correct?
Feb 4, 2014
artsci Correct. On and off with the headlights.
Feb 4, 2014
artsci We already have 10 orders for the next production run, which begins as soon as the Chinese New Year ends on February 13.
Feb 4, 2014
rekoh I got it today!!! WOW - the quality looks amazing. I can not wait to hook it up this weekend!!!
Back to the power question. Is there a fuse that is only powered when the car is on? .. like an accessory fuse.. that way when the car is off, the lighted T will be off?
how much draw does it do? -- is there any risk of leaving it on all the time (even for a couple of days at a time)??
Feb 5, 2014
andrewket Rick, saw this today is the mobile eye thread:
"On off is automatic with the MS power yellow wire purple stripe beside left leg on wall of drivers side 3 inches from floor easy to access. Also good for radar detectors and blind spot power supply. "
Sounds like a good switched 12v source.
Andrew
Feb 5, 2014
artsci I've left it on for 3 days with no apparent battery loss. I measured the draw but can't remember what it was but we're talking milliamps.
As for switched power, see andrewket's thread: "On off is automatic with the MS power yellow wire purple stripe beside left leg on wall of drivers side 3 inches from floor easy to access. Also good for radar detectors and blind spot power supply. "
That wire is easily accessible by removing the driver's side kick panel. I'm going to check that out when I get home (in Jamaica at the moment). Yeah Mon!
Feb 5, 2014
drtko147 There seems to be confusion about the supply list you provided. Some of the parts are only required if you hook up to the fuse box and some if you hook up to the headlights. I think there should be some clarification.
Feb 5, 2014
efusco Great pickup! So how do I connect the "T" to that? Would be awesome if someone posts photos and their solution. I would love the option of having the T power on automatically when the headlights or car is turned on but still be able to use the Oznium controller to pulse and such when I want to.
Feb 5, 2014
artsci Will address that tomorrow (traveling today). In the meantime if you read through the options it should be pretty obvious.
Feb 5, 2014
drtko147 I agree but I think it may be helpful to point it out in the list of supplies (such as labeling them 1, 2, etc.).
Feb 5, 2014
Musterion I'm a bit confused by this discussion -- isn't it the case that if you keep the DRL toggle on in the car, that the DRLs are on whenever the car is on, and stay on when the headlights turn on? If so there is no reason you would want to connect to both circuits, if your goal was to always have the lighted T turn on with the car. Just connect to DRL circuit and keep on the toggle.
- - - Updated - - -
Regarding the requests to keep the T on with the car, but also have the option to manually turn on with the Oznium controller: I don't have one to inspect, but the controller needs to have some kind of relay inside it. If it is already a SPDT relay, then it is a simple task of connecting the lighted T to common, DRL circuit to S1, and the "always-on" circuit from fusebox to S2. If Oznium doesn't let you tap all poles of the relay, you can use it to drive a separate SPDT relay which does the same thing. If you do that you can additionally use a timer relay that would provide a time-out (say switching back to DRL circuit after a set time) if you are worried about leaving the T on manually too long.
Feb 5, 2014
artsci I wanted to note that the Lighted T and arch do not fit Signature Model S's. The curvature of the nose cone is different and the stock chrome T attaches with two pins that have to be melted over from the back side of the nose cone. So if you have a Sig this mod is not for you.
I've let all the first run buyers know so if they have a Sig they can return the Lighted to me for a full refund.
Feb 5, 2014
rekoh Sorry for my idiocy... I understand nothing of what this all means, but sounds really interesting..
If I hook up the oznium controller to powerfeed from the DRL, then I would just need to turn the T on.. it would turn off when the car turns off.... correct ?? Does the DRL have a fuse # to tap into?
again.. sorry to be throwing everyone off here.. just trying to keep this as automatic as possible (I am too accustomed to not having to power things on and off..)
Feb 5, 2014
brianman In case you don't see the other thread...
Is there a plan in the works for Sigs in the (near?) future?
Feb 6, 2014
artsci Likely not. The T on the Sig nose cone, in addition to have a different curvature and mount also is a slightly different size. This means new production injection molds and high capital costs which probably could not be covered by the number sold. We'd have to have at least 50 paid orders to justify those costs. If someone can organize a group of Sig owners for a group buy that would make it possible I think.
Update: I'll start a pre-order list this weekend to see if we can get enough sig buyers (50). If so I'll make it happen.
Feb 7, 2014
Musterion No problem -- I don't want to say something more confusing because I don't have the Oznium controller nor its manual/schematic. If I could look at that I can give you a concrete recipe. Can anyone point me to the instruction manual or schematic for the infamous Oznium LED controller? I could not find it on the referenced site. Thanks!

drtko147 I am curious. Is it possible to configure the lighted T to adjust the brightness if it is hooked directly into the headlights or DRL?

Chas F Installed mine tonight. Looks great! Went in without a hitch. Thanks Rick!

artsci Only if you wire the Oznium controller or some other variable resistor into the circuit. That way it cannot be turned on if the headlights are not on, and when it is on you can vary the brightness with the remote.

andrewket If only the controller had a default on or last state capability. I'd wire the controller to the lights.
At this point I think I'm going to install it to the lights with some resistors to dim it a bit.

pgiralt Any idea how much current the lighted T pulls? I could measure it but figured someone might already know. I'm thinking of making a circuit with a photocell to make it dim automatically as it gets darker.

andrewket Rick and I were discussing this option last week. I couldn't find a photocell that varies resistance based on ambient light. We would have to build a small circuit.

pgiralt I was thinking of feeding a photo resistor into a small arduino-based circuit to control the LED. I've never played around with Arduino and I've always wanted to. This sounds like a good excuse.

artsci Yes if someone finds a solution let us know. I'm sure such circuits exist.

drtko147 So you mean that if I use option B for the installation, I can still install the Oznium controller into the circuit without connecting it to the fuse box. That sounds like a plan.

4SUPER9 That's a cool approach to this. Since the T is not as visible during the daytime, one might not want to bother with the fuse approach (not that this method is any more difficult). I plan to drive around in the daytime today and see how visible it is.

drtko147 From what I can tell from what artsci sent out for schematics, it seems to be easy to install in series. I ordered the controller and remote from Oznium and plan to install it soon. I am still waiting for a few parts from Amazon.

I found 4super9's tips helpful. Since I plan to hook up the lighted T to the DRL, it may be easier.
