DMage As others have said, there is absolutely a different system where they can see more. That system does include the website CPOs as well, and it's only marginally better as it has some level of sort/filtering (although nowhere near as good as ev-CPO). I was just in this past weekend and found what would have been a perfect P85+ listed although after the specialist reached out he discovered it had been in an accident then repaired. I've asked them to keep a lookout for my criteria but I may stop in every few weekends to check myself anyway.
Jan 8, 2016
mrjedistud From my experience there are a number of unlisted cars, BUT many of them are listed internally as USED. Not CPO. Keep this in mind, many of the unlisted cars will most likely sell uncertified. In other cases, they may still get certified, but they may have stories that go along width them. There were a number of such cars that I saw with great prices, but then found out the reason why.
Jan 8, 2016
DMage Agree I have the feeling that this might be the case, and they'd rather only put the best on the public .com site. Although the one I was inquiring about was listed as certified. A bit surprised considering the accident / damage repair.

viperboy Can someone help me understand the CPO warranty?
- a new car has 8 years, unlimited miles on the drive train and battery
- a CPO has 4 years or 50k miles of limited warranty
So....If I buy a 1 year old CPO, I lose the difference between year 5 (1 year owned + 4 year CPO) and year 8 (new car warranty)?
Jan 8, 2016
mn4az New = 4year / 50k miles
CPO = 4year / 50k miles
Battery/drivetrain from new and transferable to CPO = unlimited miles and 8 years
Jan 8, 2016
MsElectric The only caveat is that the 4 year new warranty can be extended another 4 years for a total of 8 years of coverage. However they will not let you extend the 4 year CPO warranty even if you buy a 2015 CPO car that is just a few months old.
So if you buy a CPO car you loose the ability to extend the warranty but if you buy the same car from a private party they can extend the warranty so the car has full 8 years of coverage. This could be an important matter for those who plan to keep the car for more than 4 years and afraid of the cost of out of warranty repairs.
Jan 8, 2016
viperboy
OK, so just to restate it for clarification....
Car 1: new
- Battery / Drivetrain = 8 years unlimited milage
- Rest of car ("bumper to bumper" a lot of places call it) = 4 years, 50k miles with the option to purchase another 4 years 50k miles
Car 1: 1 year old, 10k miles
- Battery / Drivetrain = 8 years unlimited milage (7 years, unlimited miles remain)
- Rest of car ("bumper to bumper" a lot of places call it) = 4 years, 50k miles from purchase date (so technically 5 years, 60k miles total on the vehicle), no option to extend
Jan 8, 2016
mkjayakumar Viperboy: yes that is my understanding too.
Jan 8, 2016
mrjedistud Yup you got it.
Also, the ESA (extended warranty) has a $4000 cost and a $200 deductible.
Jan 8, 2016
Crowded Mind I believe originally not every model S had the 8/yr unlimited miles battery/drivetrain warranty though. Perhaps it was 8 year/100,000 miles? Do all CPO's then have the original warranty that was offered or are they converted to the 8/unlimited if they are sold CPO?
Jan 8, 2016
Cyclone Originally they weren't unlimited miles. Then the 85/P85 got unlimited while the 60 stayed at 125k miles I believe. Early in the CPO program the 60s did NOT get upgraded to unlimited, but I thought I read reports that recently they do. I am unsure. If they do recently, it likely was around the time the 60s were dropped and the 70D introduced, since that one has unlimited miles like the 85/85D/P85D.

Gentilly7 Does anyone know what number VIN did they began installing AutoPilot hardware on?
Jan 11, 2016
world101 It's hard to track that by VIN. I've seen some P85 cars in the VIN range of P45xxx that had it and others that do not. Even some S85 cars in the P55000+ range don't have it. Your best guide is the manufacturer build date. If the car was built mid to late September 2014, it should have the autopilot hardware. I've heard the date is Sept 14, 2014 and later. Once you have the VIN, call your local sales advisor and they can look up the build date. The for sure way is to physically look at the car for the front radar and side wheel well sensors. I understand that is hard to do on most cars listed online, and on all cars on the CPO site, since they are stock photos.
Even though some cars will have the hardware, I have heard there may be an additional charge to activate the autopilot software, if it was not originally paid for by the first owner. I can't confirm that 100% though.

bwa Over a thousand posts on this thread. Ok, I'm going to read that some other time. For now:
I just found out Tesla Model S is on CPO for $50K.
I thought: Maybe I can finance that ...
Then I found out: I don't understand. Why does Tesla want a One Thousand Dollar deposit for filling out a credit application? That can't be right ... I'll have to look more into this.
Then, I researched: Followup: Ok, I sent an email to their financing team with that simple question. Let's see how this goes. There are $50K models around me.
Now, I'm coming to this thread for my next question:
Do CPO get government credits, from California or Fed? If not, then OK, but if so, then that would change the price outlook a LOT.
Also: CPO gets a big fat warranty, right?
Is there a place I can look all of this up? A sticky? A website? I can't find this information anywhere right now. All I know is the cumulative bits and pieces from time reading the forums, and it's incomplete and/or outdated for an actual shopper.
Jan 11, 2016
AMPd First off, congrats on your impending purchase! and welcome!
No CPO models do not qualify for the Federal 7.5k tax credit. States vary, in California you will get nothing, in Colorado you will get 6k if the vehicle was never registered in the state of Colorado, as you can see, state incentives vary.
Yes you will get a 4 year 50k mile warranty.

Filter I'm new to the forum, long time reader - first time poster.
I am weighing leasing a new model s vs buying cpo.
I drive about 3 miles a day, so range is irrelevant. I own a volt and never use gas.
I just saw a cpo s60 pop up with 50 miles on the odometer. Looks like an early build from the VIN.
Has anyone heard of this before? It's 56k, but if listed correctly essentially new..
Just wanted to take advantage of the collective wisdom here. Thank you all in advance.
Jan 12, 2016
Cyclone If buying a CPO, I honestly wouldn't care about mileage on the odo. I would buy based on the features I want, which might connect into age as well (like no auto fold mirrors on 2012s and the parking sensor option came mid-2013). $56k for an S60 is overpriced in my opinion since mileage isn't a factor for me.
Jan 12, 2016
kort677 fwiw: the early '14 S85 with 22k miles, tech pkg, upgraded sound, ambient lighting that I traded in is listed at 62K on the CPO list, based on that an S60 at 56k is a bit high.

You didn't say if you wanted to do road trips, or drive 200 miles in cold weather (below freezing), if so, we here would recommend the 85 kWh battery vs the 60.
If you intend to just drive it locally and on a few short summer (400 mile) trips on supercharger routes, then a 60 is very nice.
Jan 12, 2016
vkphil New here and I have been doing my research for the past month. Getting an electrician out to my house to install the outlet by the end of the month.
Keeping an eye on CPO cars, new car timelines, etc.
Not decided if I need the extra range of an 85 over 70. My commute is 50 miles a day and I should be fine there. Live in Philly, so my only issue is trips to the shore in the summer. (there are no SCs at South Jersey Shore as of now)
Not sure if I need the performance bump of an 85 over 70. I have test drove both of them. But it is hard to tell during a half hour test drive especially when they don't take you on a high way. I have a BMW 328 3 series car, so I want the Tesla to beat that.
Not entirely decided on some of the options.
I am waiting for the 2016 Model S since we are in 2016 already and I am willing to wait until at least July. There will be a new car by then right?
If there are CPO 2015 by July, that might be an option for me.
AP is a necessity for me. Too cool to pass up! I can live without the D though.
Jan 12, 2016
Cyclone Tesla doesn't do Model Years like other car manufacturers. They introduce changes as they are ready. Any model year references are simply a side-effect of how other organizations (government groups, insurance companies, etc.) classify cars. So any car built now is a 2016 car, but that doesn't mean things won't change (yeah, double negative) by July.
Jan 12, 2016
vkphil I understand that. I mean that I'm waiting for significant 2016 changes (like new sensors or improved battery capacity, etc)
Jan 12, 2016
AMPd They recently upgraded the capacity with the 90kwh battery option.
You might not see another bump in at least a couple years.
Jan 12, 2016
NuclearPowered I think theres a good argument to buy the highest milage car that meets your requirements. Car should have had more opportunity for stuff to break and with the warranty being the same, there also should be a better chance that some of the wearables would reach time for replacement within the warranty time frame. If nothing else needs replacement, it could be assumed that it will last the lifetime of the car. And of course the ridiculous discount. Buying something with 55-60k miles would be fine. Warranty gets you to 110k ish miles. Anything thats gonna break has probably already broken and fixed under warranty. Thinking about center screens, worn suspension components, etc
Jan 12, 2016
Drucifer Tesla has tended to drop major changes and software releases in the fall and spring. If there is to be a big announcement, it is likely to be by the end of April, or next Sept/Oct. Past patterns do not guarantee future actions, however and YMMV.
Jan 12, 2016
dhanson865 We already saw
Model S60 pre AP (2012 to early 2014)
Model S85 pre AP (2012 to early 2014)
Model S60 with AP (late 2014)
Model S85 with AP (late 2014)
Model S70 (early 2015)
Model S90 (mid 2015)
I expect to see something like
Model S75 (2016)
Model S95 (2016)
Model S80 (2017)
Model S100 (2017)
Model 3 - 65 (range similar to a S80) - 2018 version
Model 3 - 80 (range similar to a S100) - 2018 version
Model S85 (2018 version)
Model S105 (2018)
Meaning I expect another battery capacity bump in every calendar year. It is possible they will skip a calender year by doing one early 2017 instead of late 2016 but either way i don't think you can expect more than 10-20 months between capacity increases.

kort677

Jan 12, 2016
AMPd I don't understand why you expect a 5kwh bump every year when it took tesla 3 years for the first 5kwh increase.
Jan 12, 2016
dhanson865 I say that because Elon Musk and JB Straubel have given guidance repeatedly that there will be a 5-10% increase per year between now and 2020 due to advances they are currently seeing and expect at the gigafactory in Nevada.
They are telling press, investors, industry analysts, etcetera to expect this.
They did not say that in the far past. They did start saying that more recently. When exactly the transition was I didn't try to pin down. I just pay attention to their guidance. I suggest reading
Tesla Gigafactory Investor Thread
Tesla Gigafactory
until you find the links to the videos of Musk or JB being interviewed or giving a live presentation at a conference. You'll see several references to the coming capacity increases in slides and verbally.
At the conference for just after the 90 kWh release Musk said that there would be an increase every year or some wording similar to that but said it wouldn't be worth buying a new battery for a used car until at least 2 or 3 years worth of capacity improvements had occurred (implying wait as long as you can between pack upgrades because we'll be upgrading packs more often than it make sense for you to do so).
I'm going totally from memory but if you really need me to I can cite references and post more accurate quotes some day when I get bored.
Beyond that I'm just using round 5kw numbers because its easier to guess that. They could possibly skip a 5 and make a 10 jump or use odd numbers. I don't have insider information on specific capacities or release dates.
I'd also expect the low and high packs to increase on seperate months or even separate years as they run out of old production and start using new. The fact that they'll be upping the low and the high means they may do one in early 2016 and the other in late 2016. I doubt that they'll bump both at the exact same time.
Oh and we currently have
low = 70
mid = 85
high = 90
I'm expecting the mid is a phase out of the old high and once they run out of 85s or want to introduce a 95 the 85 will disappear. I won't guarantee that they'll always keep more than 2 sizes available in new cars. I won't rule out that for very very short periods there might be 3 or 4 pack sizes as they phase in a new capacity for the new low, new high, or both.

Jan 12, 2016
AMPd You may have misunderstood what they meant.
What they are talking about is battery cell energy density, 5% increase per year, that's not the same as getting a bigger battery pack every year.
Jan 12, 2016
dhanson865 Nope, Elon specifically talked about the 90 kWh pack vs the 85 and how there would be higher capacity packs coming. He recommended not upgrading until 2 or 3 years had gone by when there had been multiple pack capacity changes.

Jan 12, 2016
AMPd I stand corrected!
I did not see that, I remember JB and Elon talking about battery energy density improving 5% every year. Did not see the part about battery pack capacity increasing 5% every year.
Jan 12, 2016
dhanson865 Well they never specifically promised it would be every year, they just say it many different ways implying that capacity, density, cost, weight, and so on will all improve.
Note cost is a profitability factor and does not equal price. They may increase the price, keep the price, or reduce the price at any time related to or unrelated to capacity increases.
No guarantees on schedule or how many factors change (they may make a increase in capacity and reduce cost this time, increase capacity and reduce weight the next time, reduce weight and cost another time without increasing capacity, and so on).
They also say that each change is a discreet step not a smooth x percent per month or x percent per year. It could stall for some number of months or years and then jump. They just describe it as the projected average of the slope(s).

Jan 13, 2016
MsElectric As what happened with the P85+ cars priced in the $100Ks last year other cars priced too high will sit unsold for 6+ months and then they will have to price such cars in the mid to late $80Ks to sell it. Private party P85Ds are already selling for the late $80Ks.
A new car that sold for $120K looses about $10-15K the moment the original owner drives it off the lot in addition to the value of the rebates. Many in a position to pay $105-110K for a used car would rather pay $120K and buy it brand new, especially with all the weekly incremental improvements made by Tesla and you also get to configure the car just the way you want it.

pchilds I bought this one, how long does it for Tesla to contact me? It's been a long 24 hrs.

Jan 13, 2016
Bet TSLA I paid about $114K for my P85. So after California rebates that would be $104K. After sixty days and 3200 miles Tesla offered me $95K if I wanted to trade it in for a P85D. This was about a year ago. So at least at the time the vehicles weren't losing value quite as fast as you say.

peteyswift Congrats! I loved how that car had everything one really needs and nothing extraneous (imo). I'd be impatient to get it; why don't you reach out to your local Tesla showroom about it?

Dilbagh Can you share details on this car. It was gone before I could see it.

DougH They will most likely email you before they call you. But the SC that has you car knows that you have placed your dep. That goes out to many people as soon as you pay your dep.

mmd You got a good offer, as you bought a new P85D from them. Trade-in values are not the market prices. Did you try selling it to someone else or to Tesla without buying a new one? Here is a 2014 P85 (P40532) with 6760 miles listed for $65k. What you got seems pretty good compared to what these are selling for now.

Cyclone Yes. With the new sensors on the AP-capable cars, all cars (from then on) got parking sensors, emergency braking, and side collision/blind spot warning.
Jan 14, 2016
supersnoop But, at some point, parking sensors were part of the tech package before they were a separate option, right?
Jan 14, 2016
Cyclone Mid-2013, Parkig Sensors were a separate option. Sept. 2014 (introduction of AutoPilot), the Tech Package activated AutoPilot, but even cars without the tech package have the sensors. I do not know if the parking sensors software is active for these cars. Sometime in 2015 the tech package was disbanded and parking sensors definitely come on all cars.

pchilds I got an email this morning, looks like I have a 3 week wait for the my CPO Tesla.
"Your delivery specialist will be reaching out to you for additional information and delivery logistics. Right now were expecting about an early February delivery time frame due to the back up with Tesla Service. We will be reinspecting, refurbishing, and detailing the vehicle up to our standards."

mn4az For those willing to provide an opinion, I would value some opinions on a price from a private sale (post #3) that I am in negotiations on. TIA
What would you pay for ______________?
Jan 14, 2016
andrewknight I have not heard from my DS yet buy mytesla has been updated to "in transit" on my car which is finally some progress! I also just got the payment request email and the purchase agreement is now showing an estimated delivery date of 1/22. So that would be 5 weeks from order for me.
Question on payment, I think I want to hold off on payment until I see and inspect the car correct? Can I bring a check to the delivery? How did others do it?
Andrew
Jan 14, 2016
HankLloydRight Yes, I brought a personal check at delivery.
Jan 14, 2016
DMage Well, I bit the bullet and placed an order tonight. I blame Hank and his site.
P85+ with rear seats. Mid 50's. Higher than average mileage but with the warranty not super concerning. Excited/nervous/shocked right now...

mkjayakumar I inspected mine today at Dallas SC. There were a few things on the nose cone and bumper that I was told will be replaced. Dark blue hides all those blemishes. Interestingly the work was supposed to have been done in PaloAlto from where it was shipped but they passed it to Dallas SC because they are busy.
Dallas SC looked very busy what with two X deliveries when I was there. They have done 6 X deliveries so far.
Jan 14, 2016
DMage Interesting. My car is at the Fremont SC (factory). I expect they will do the reconditioning there, or at least thats what the sales agent said on the phone.
When I was in at the Orlando location two weeks ago they had 3 X's they were prepping for delivery.

Thanks Hank! I actually just noticed your avatar. Is that your true plate? I am not one to name cars but the Product Specialist noted that there is a name assigned to the car. I was going to go with Gigawatt. Restored a DeLorean and had it for 8 years. My avatar is the drive back from picking it up in 2003.

Dilbagh I see the total number of cars constantly dropping on ev-CPO.com at the rate of about 1-2/hr. Is it mainly because people are reserving them or is Tesla constantly pulling some of the list as well.
Jan 14, 2016
DMage I would assume reserving. My car was immediately gone from Teslas site, and gone from Hanks site as soon as I refreshed a few minutes later. If you have Hanks history package you can see when it's probably Tesla removing as they seem to do a handful in bulk which the site tracks as the same removal time.
