Well, I guess as long as it's in summary form or an analysis, that's OK. But again, only to TMC.

    Finally did it! CPO P85!

I put down my deposit at the Highland Park, IL Store/Service Center! I am now the proud owner of a beautiful P85 CPO

The car should be ready by next Friday. It was already in great condition and drove like a dream. For some reason this one has been there since the beginning, even after multiple price drops.

    Here are the specs

    2013 P85
    Vin 5800's

    Pearl White
    Pano
    19" standard wheels
Grey Performance Interior (really impressed how this looked in person, especially with the carbon fiber)
    Carbon Fiber Decor
    Supercharging
    Twin Chargers
    Active Air Suspension
    Sound Studio Package
    Paint Armor
    Tech Package

It was exactly what I have been waiting for! Trading in my 2013 328.

As a bonus someone traded in a beautiful 2011 Roadster Sport, so if anyone is looking for one, you know where to find one.

Very happy to finally join the Tesla family

    Here are the pics

Clark, nice car. What exactly will they be doing to the car for the next week? (Has anyone taken delivery of a CPO faster than one week from deposit?)

Zero CPOs under $60k today, what's the deal?

Just wait a bit prices have nowhere to go but down.

Clark, beautiful car and very well optioned. The P85s represent the best CPO values from what I can tell so congrats :)

what setting was the air suspension set on when you took the pictures? Standard?
  • Jul 26, 2015
    clarkbariowa
The car has been there since 4/27, so it already went through a pre-inspection and has been in the same Highland Park, IL lot since. My owner advisor said that it would basically go through a thourough reconditioning/detail process again. They were shooting for Friday, because I have family in and they wanted to see it. Any issue or correction needed will bump that delivery date.

I visually inspected it and everything looked really good, but I am not an expert of course. At this point a majority of the process will probably be detailing/cleaning and verifying the Tires,Brakes,Rotors, etc are still within spec after the initial inspection months ago.

The car only had 15K miles, my owner advisor mentioned that they get some really low miles/great condition cars in the area.

    - - - Updated - - -

We demoed the air suspension settings and then set it to standard for the test drive. This is after the test drive, so I believe it is set to standard still.

I always thought the aero wheels were hideous, but after seeing them in person at a supercharger in Ohio, I've done a total 180 on them. They are really nice in person and photos don't do them justice.

Any speculation about when we will start seeing some D's in the CPO market?

I know there have been a few P85D that pop up briefly but really interested in an 85D or 70D (still trying to decide whether to buy new or CPO). I am guessing once Model X comes out there may be a burst of trade in activity and will start to see some AWD cars in CPO.
  • Jul 26, 2015

I would venture a guess that TM would hold back most Ds from CPO in order to move out the non-D inventory they already have. They'd essentially be cannibalizing themselves offering Ds as soon as they are available.

(There have only been 3 P85Ds offered for CPO sale so far -- 2 US and one Canada).

I wonder what the scoop is on some of these CPO cars with almost no miles on them. There are probably 20-30 CPO cars on the consolidator with < 3000 miles on the clock. I guess people who just decide that an EV wasn't for them? Who trades in a car with 2000 miles on it?
  • Jul 27, 2015
    brantse
That is a good point, I never thought about it. When I checked, I was expecting to see that those were all Inventory cars, but that's not the case. They all appear to have been built in the timeframe just before Autopilot was installed. I wonder if these were owners that got upset about not being offered AP versions, and traded in.

I am hunting/waiting for an under 50k MS with rear facing seats. I don't need any other options to be a buyer, but would happily take tech package and pano. I am also curious if an 85 will get into my price range. There were two 60s that went for ~47.5, and I would have taken either one if it had rear facing seats. Not in a rush bc I had planned on waiting for the 3, but after a test drive/convincing the wife/getting financing in order it's hard to wait. Along with that, we tested our car seats in the back seat of a 70D and they fit comfortably, but I am now thinking the 3 will not work nearly as well with car seats bc of its size. There is zero extra space for the front passengers with car seats in the back. Not uncomfortable, but tight.

50k is the top of my budget, and I am buying as a family car (obviously) for the safety reasons + all the added benefits that you all know. What do you all think my chances are of getting in a MS sometime soon? I'm one of many lurking and waiting to see what CPOs pop up with the X release.

Been watching these here forums for a little while now- thanks to all of you for your wealth of information! I am very appreciate and hope to have something meaningful to contribute one day.

I asked the same thing of a Porsche salesman about a CPO Boxster they had on the showroom floor with similar mileage. He looked at me and deadpanned:

I would say trying to get an 85 of any sort for < 50K is going to be a very long wait. As far as I know the only cars < 50K that have come on the CPO market have been S60's.
  • Jul 27, 2015
    brantse
I can't recall which one it was, but one of the sub $50k's had rear facing seats. Have you had a chance to see the seats in person. Personally, I think they're "neat", but size/weight restrictions make them almost a gimmick. There was an 85 that sold for $50.4k with like 41k miles. I knew it was going to go quick, and unfortunately wasn't able to convince my wife to let me jump on it. I've told myself that I'm going to snag the next comparably equipped car that comes at that price.
  • Jul 27, 2015
    Drucifer
There is a pretty narrow use case with the seats. That said, My 6 year old loves them, and I love putting her in them when I pick her up in a wet towel at the swim club. They are a leather saver.

Also, helpful when you have 6 or 7 people and would rather just take 1 car.

    According to http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2013/05/tesla-model-s-third-row-seats-are-suitable-only-for-kids/index.htm:
This is restrictive, but still potentially useful for a great many families. Our alternative would be to wait for a Model X.

    HankLloydRight
The lowest price S85 with rear seats sold was $60,900. That's a way to go to get below $50k -- like a 15% drop. Could be a long wait. Good luck.

Can't speak to other markets, but the of the 21 New York cards, 14 are below 5K miles and 7 are below 3K (lowest is 888.) There's 2012 P85 that must be a blast to drive which has all of 2581 miles. Easily explainable since we depend heavily on mass transit for commuting.

Still, I can't get over the thought of somebody with a P85 who let it sit around for almost 3 years and put less miles on it than i will in the first month.

I know it wasn't picked up by your website, Hank, and I don't have proof, but can confirm that there was an S85 that sold for $50.4k. I believe it was "located" in Seattle.

I'm fine with a base model 60 plus rear seats, though hearing of an 85 around 55k, along with the couple of 60s that sold at 47.5k, makes me hopeful I can get a little more. I know it's unusual that rear seats are the only option I require, but I plan on keeping the car 10+ years, and my kids (currently 1yr and unborn) will use the back the entirety of their 35-77lb life. I am buying this car strictly for the safety and no gas aspect, or at least that's what I tell my wife...will be patient and see what comes in the next few months!

Just know that there are no vents for the 3rd row, and it can be hot in the summer. I put ceramic window tint on the rear window, which helps some....but only some. Also, make sure to cool the car off before walking out to it in summer for that 3rd row as well.

I thought I read that if you put the a/c on "fresh air" rather than "recirculate", it does open a vent from outside into the rear. That said, there still would be no fan to put much of a "breeze" back there.

Are you referring to "regular" S85D models? There have already been at least 2-3 CPO P85Ds available. Currently you can see P64366 and P68877 are available.

Touche, I can't "confirm". I was hoping that someone would eventually pop up saying that they purchased that vehicle. I really wish it could have been me.

Regarding the rear seats, I would assume Tesla would put rear seats in any vehicle, if you pay the option cost. Don't you think?
  • Jul 27, 2015
    Drucifer
Nope. 3rd row seat vehicles get a modified rear bumper and other rear crush zone modifications. 3rd row seats must be optioned in the original build of the vehicle, with exception of Signature and very low VIN MS, which all got the special rear bumper.
  • Jul 27, 2015
    MorrisonHiker
Yeah, after I posted, I wondered if the "we're" in your post meant "Canadians."

Hopefully they will start to show up eventually...but living in a smaller market, I can imagine the amount of inventory available is smaller as well, especially if you aren't allowed to import.

I have a reservation for an X but would consider a regular S85D or S70D if the price and options were right. I think there are a lot of us on TMC waiting for those.

Hello everyone! First post, though I've been lurking here a lot, and I've read through this entire thread.

Does anyone know if there is a way to tell whether a given vehicle has an A-pack or B-pack battery? I know some early owners had battery packs swapped under warranty and that there was some overlap in VINs where the original battery pack could be A or B depending on the luck of the original owner. So even an early Signature could have a B-pack while a VIN as high as P09xxx could have an A-pack.

    Thanks!
  • Jul 27, 2015
    dhanson865
Well if it has a 70 kWh battery or 60 kWh battery it won't be A or B that you care about*
If it has an 85 kWh battery and either dual motors, autopilot features, or parking sensors it won't be A or B
If it is a 2014 or newer it won't be A or B.

Take a look at Battery table - Tesla Motors Club - Enthusiasts & Owners Forum for some examples but I don't think you'll care if it has a B, D, E, F, etcetera as long as it isn't A.

    * the supercharging rate issue only applies to the A pack on the original S85 and variants. The 60 pack with A revision is newer and doesn't slow down supercharging like the original pack. The 70 pack with A revision is newer than that and supercharges even faster.

Thanks. I'm specifically looking for a P85, hopefully priced in the $60s, which seems so much more appealing to me than stretching for a 70 because I love performance.

The few P85s that I see below $70k frequently have a VIN that makes the A-pack a possibility. I'm especially suspicious of the few I've seen in the lower $60s. I would ask a Tesla rep before pulling the trigger on one but as quickly as the good ones seem to get snatched up I was hoping there was a way I could infer something online.

Absent physically checking, I don't know. Mine is a B. Turn the steering wheel completely counter-clockwise, then look into the passenger front wheel well. It may be easier to use your phone to snap a picture back there and then read the photo. Overall, I dhanson basically alludes to above, I wouldn't worry about what version the car may have in all honestly.
  • Jul 27, 2015
    ModelSFL
    What's an A vs B battery represent?
  • Jul 27, 2015
    Drucifer
B is newer tech and charges faster at the supercharger than A. Since I will only supercharge 10-20 times a year, Saving maybe 2 hours annually just didn't seem like such a big deal, so I didn't care about what pack I got. If I was on the road all the time, that might change.

"For 85kWh, the highest reported A battery VIN is mine, 9331. However there were mixed A and B deliveries before then. After 9448, all batteries were B or higher. You can check this table for more details: Battery table - Tesla Motors Club - Enthusiasts & Owners Forum "

Best plan of attack is to go to:
    http://ev-cpo.com/

Sign up for a premium subscription :

quote : "Set up custom Alerts for specific configurations using any of 23 different options/criteriaCustom Alerts are sent out immediatly upon the CPO Consolidator finding any car matching your criteria [coming very soon]"

This way, you get an email when the car matching your criteria comes up on the entire Tesla CPO site nationwide.

A fellow forum member made this service and it was used very successfully by me (got my S85 at midnight before anyone else saw the sweet deal that it was) and others here. I found working through a Tesla sales person ineffective as the tools they have available are worse than the ev- CPO site I point to above.

You mean the lowest price in the US, not necessarily in US dollars (with exchange)! |-)

Recently purchased a CPO S85 here in Toronto, price was too good not to jump on it now. Wife loves it, and is willing to live without AWD, even though we are coming from a Mercedes GLK that was a great winter car. The AWD would be fantastic for added traction and cornering, but doesn't help on braking...so we plan to get high quality winter tires.

That was an old test. The 60Kwh can max out at 105Kw now. While in the video the 60 only max out at 85kw input power. Other videos have proven this video wrong.

As you can see from my sig below, we have an early 2013 CPO S85 that has the A pack.

I once thought as you do, that the difference in pack would affect my purchase decision. Don't believe all the concern/hype/talk on this subject. I was concerned about range and charge speed judging by posts made in this site.

Reality : We did a 20 hour road trip from Toronto <-> NY (and back) without any issues, in our first week of ownership!

Reality : The battery degradation matches the average on the curve posted elsewhere here for a car two years old with 35000 miles on it. Meaning, a 90% charge gets well more than 200 real world miles at speed limit + 15%.

The A pack in our car charges at 90kW for the first 15 minutes of the charge (which is 75x faster than my Smart ED charges) and when we needed to charge more than 30 minutes to get to a 90% (or more) charge, we had something to do. Turns out you need to stop every 3 hours or 230+ miles for a break, so we would fully charge to 100% when eating, or charge to 90% when we only needed a bio break.

See my road trip report in the Canada sub-forum.

We've done 2000 miles and used 15 superchargers in our first month in the car.

Nothing to worry about based on my experience.

Interesting, so the 85s do charge 20% or so faster? Is it hardware or software that allows it?
  • Jul 27, 2015
    Bifff67
When you go to a supercharger, nose around the big white boxes and if can find a hole in the fence take a picture of the label on the systems. Enlarge it and read it. All the ones I have seen here mid-East coast are rated at 120KW on the label. i have heard they have 135KW . But the only way you will get 135 is if the SC is rated to provide it. Is there a list anywhere of where 135's might live?
  • Jul 27, 2015
    No2DinosaurFuel
The 85s can charge faster because of the higher voltage. The amps stay the same. No software or hardware changes. Only the battery voltage changes.

Keep in mind the tapering. Both the 60s and the 70s have the same voltage, but because the 70s have more capacity, the tapering occurs later effectively making the 70s charge faster than the 60s.
  • Jul 28, 2015
    dhanson865
    The old limits were

Some can charge at 90 KW (85 KWh A battery pack, near 1.06C charge rate)
some can charge at 105 KW (60 KWh with older battery pack, 1.75C charge rate)
some can charge at 111 KW (60 KWh with newer battery pack, 1.85C charge rate)
some can charge at 120 KW (85 KWh B or D battery pack, near 1.41C charge rate)

Don't know if the S70D is sharing the 111 KW or the 120 KW limit or if it has it's own.

    provisional S70D limit possibilities

    111 KW (70 KWh, 1.59C charge rate)
    120 KW (70 KWh, 1.71C charge rate)
    129 KW (70 KWh, 1.85C charge rate)

but it is clear that on a 120KW charger the S85 will charge faster than an S60 so long as the 85 has a B or higher rev pack.

You can see a list of supercharger types at North - Tesla Motors Club - Enthusiasts & Owners Forum. I think there are only a couple of 90KW Superchargers left, so if you aren't at one of those it's hands down faster charging for a modern S85.
  • Jul 28, 2015
    No2DinosaurFuel

IT would not be possible for the 70KWh to do 129KW... at least not now.

It seems to me like the the 111KW on the 60KWh might be due to them being at one of those 135KW stations which are essentially higher current version of the 120KW stations. Since the 70KWh share the same voltage, they will ALWAYS share the same max charging rate, but just taper later during the charge. So 129KW charging is not possible unless tesla release a higher current capable charging station. i.e. 150KW stations.
  • Jul 28, 2015
    dhanson865
Yes, liquid cooled cables and a 150KW supercharger will be that next step I assume. I'm just saying until that next step in superchargers comes we don't really know the limit of the S70D or S90D at supercharging. It may be that they have some headroom in the pack that can't currently be taken advantage of due to limitations of the charge port or cable.

It is possilbe that the charge port itself won't allow for more than 120KW and the jump to 150KW chargers will just improve the shared stall pairing issue so that heavily congested superchargers don't slow down.

But even so we'll surely see less taper as the battery packs and cooling improve.

I'd be really careful buying early VIN Cars.

My CPO Sig (#668), has a real loud flutter/squeal when under WOT. I took it to the Service Center and they advised that it is the battery contactors, that this is normal operation and they will not be replaced.

The noise is quite loud and frankly quite embarrassing, as though the car is farting under heavy load haha.

According to some of the other threads, this noise leads to the battery crapping out and getting replaced. Doesn't bother me, as I won't be the driver of this car (its going into my commercial fleet soon), but still CPO Buyer Beware!

I also fall into the demographic, but unfortunately the CPO market has not yet rolled out in Europe. Used Teslas should be available (mostyl from people who upgraded to D's), but it's very badly communicated - you only get to hear about the options and the list of cars on appointment at a Tesla store.

ooh....does anyone know if the $1-2k referral program applies to CPO's?.....definitely a sweet add on if so!
  • Jul 30, 2015
    brantse
Doubt it, but that would be great. If so, who wants to be my referrer?

Hank, you should get the referral bonus for every sale directed from your site.

    Cowby
that's almost a given.....hey now! just thought of an idea....if this is indeed true, then let's get Hank that 10 referrals quickly so he can get the FREE MODEL X FOUNDERS SERIES!!!!!:love::love:
  • Jul 30, 2015
    HankLloydRight
Yeah, thanks, but the referral program is only for new cars, and from what I understand, not including inventory cars either.

You get the referral credit by clicking a referral link and ordering a car via the design studio. If you have to visit a store, that's essentially defeating the purpose of the referral program -- to reduce the $2000 cost of selling cars via the galleries.

darn....this'll be harder to get you into that freebie X....lol....a side note, saw someone willing to give up their 1K in addition to the new customer's 1K....smart way to be the first in line for that Free X huh?

Sorry for the text wall in advance.

Well, I guess I'm one of the suckers who fell for the sub-$50k S60 CPO without Tech Package a couple of weeks ago. Regardless of whether prices begin to plummet due to the first deliveries of the Model X or the current lack of an upgrade path to an 85kwh or 90kwh battery, I'm beyond excited to be a new owner of a (CPO) Model S.

    A few details:
    - Supercharging was enabled on my car by the previous owner, so I was told that I'll get this as a bonus. When I put down my deposit, the car did not seem like it was spec'd for Supercharging.
    - I was originally assigned to an Ownership Advisor (OA) prior to putting my deposit down. A few minutes after I put my deposit down online, the OA was magically notified that I had done so - so I got a congratulatory call from him.
    - The car I eventually chose was in Florida, and I'm in New Mexico.
    - I was assigned to a Delivery Experience Specialist (DES) in California, and was told that the car would be shipped to the service center in Scottsdale, AZ to be inspected, etc.
    - The OA told me, prior to my deposit, that the $1500 shipment cost would include shipment to my house in New Mexico.
    - The DES informed me that I must come to the Scottsdale service center to pick up the car - not what I had originally expected. But, luckily, I have supercharging, so I should be able to make it home? I'm just frustrated about the time and cost to fly out there/find my way to Scottsdale.
    - It took about a week for them to put the car on a truck. My first update was a few days ago, when the truck had made its way from Tampa to Orlando. I have no idea when it will arrive in Scottsdale, nor do I know how long it will take to complete inspection/detail, etc.

It would be good to know if anyone else had their CPO car shipped across the country, and what their experience was.

Congrats! I certainly wouldn't consider you a sucker, especially since you probably snapped the car up before I got a chance to. Was this P10875? (edit) Wait, P10875 has TP.

So what is the different between the 85D and a P85+? I thought that they both had dual motors front and back? I ask as I am looking at a CPO P85+ for a good price with everything I want, but don't really need the Performance. Would be silly to pass up a P85+ considering this is typically a $100K Car. Just not sure what the difference is between the Ne PXXD AWD Dual Motors and the P85+.
  • Jul 30, 2015
    HankLloydRight
P85+ is not dual motor. It's a P85 with upgraded suspension and other tweaks. They also have staggered wheels/tires - 265/35/21 in the rear.

Congrats on your purchase. I'm also looking to buy a sub-50k S60 or sub-60k S85, but tech package and super charging are preferred. Thank you for posting your purchasing experience, please keep up updated how the rest of CPO delivery goes.

CPO P85 at Highland Park, IL Store is confirmed for delivery tomorrow  So that might have been a CPO delivery timeframe record thanks to my awesome owner advisor :) I placed the order/deposit last Saturday. So excited!!!

If you guys are looking for a CPO, definitely contact Brent Seavey at the Highland Park, IL Store/Service Center. He said he has visibility into CPO cars that aren't listed and can keep potential buyers up to date. He was really on point in regards to overall communication throughout the process, especially through email.

Congrats, Clark, and thanks for sharing the tip. Highland Park has boatloads of inventory - row upon row. This might actually benefit me. I have property in west Michigan and will retire to a Lake Michigan beach town a few hours north of Chicago. I've contemplated getting a MI title/plates as that would save me a bundle on insurance - over $3K for NYC - not to mention a sales tax delta of 2.875%. First year savings would top $4500 over buying a NY CPO.

I'm there for half of August so I think I'll reach out to Brent.

He does have a point at the moment. Presently only one CPO available under $65k. New 70 RWD is $61.5k after the tax credit and the $1000 referral. Coincidence? Seems to me they really want/need to generate some new orders!

None at all. They are working on my car this week and I got the same loaner again. Everything I mentioned before has been reinforced having the loaner this week (over 200 miles so far).

S85 Classic vs. P85 Autopilot Comparison
I should note that with .253, this is improved. .253 is much more willing to let regen slow me down and it won't gun up when the person in front of me changes lanes, but it still doesn't like 45-55 MPH "US Highway" streets. Too many people turning in from/off to side-streets that the TACC was very panicky.

Except that he doesn't account for the several hundred CPO cars that *have* sold since the CPO program inception, and the fact that new cars are added AND SOLD every day. He makes it sound like Tesla listed 200 cars for sale that never sold.

I actually follow that guy, along with a bunch of other shorts. I like to read the critics and see the flaws in their thinking. Near as I can tell AZComendador is a bitter, underachieving 24 year old living in Madrid. I've come to the conclusion it's rooted in envy.

I can respectfully disagree with folks who don't understand the value prop of TSLA. On the surface, there is an element of absurdity to Ford having a market cap of $60B while TSLA is at $33.7B. 6.3 million global sales in 2014 versus 31,655 deliveries shouldn't be that close...IF the valuation is rooted in the past. But of course the price of TSLA has already baked where they might be at in 3, 5 and 10 years. You're buying the future.

    /rant

He's off base on his CPO is a failure argument, but with 100 followers I don't think he's preaching to a very large choir.

TSLA may be over valued. But, I thought AAPL was overvalued in 2005 too.

Ah, yeah. I was in the same boat - sub-50k S60 or sub-60k S85. After seeing a few go away quickly, I had to convince myself I didn't really care about TP -- this is not so easy.

Hmmm. I wonder if your car will have these. Here are a couple things that VIN range w/ TP has:
    - fog lights
    - cornering lights
    - ambient lighting (lighting under arm rest in door and two lights in trunk @ rear bumper)
    - chrome trim by frunk latch

I also believe you car will have the following "unique" characteristics:
    - no electrochromatic side mirrors
    - center rear view mirror with day/night toggle switch

In any event, none of this is earth-shattering. Congrats on the car! :)

IMO every Model S is an amazing car. I don't know what people are replacing it with, but for me it will be the best car I have ever owned. For me, that will be true whether I chose an early VIN, S60, Performance or Plus. I'm so meh about AP. TACC would be nice to have on long trips, but lane keeping or self parking add zero value for me.

Unbelievable!!! I just reserved an S60 out of the Highland Park store before it even hit the website. Just like clarkbariowa recommended, I can't urge anyone enough to give Brent a call or send him an email if you're really interested in finding a car. No need to sit around watching the website for hours, days, weeks, months like I have. His responsiveness was unbelievable, and from the sounds of it they have lots of vehicles at the Highland Park center that aren't available online.

Sorry, Hank, but I'm happy to report that you'll be losing a customer. (Because I don't need it anymore
) I love the site you built. It's been really helpful for many of us and is truly impressive.

Now, down to the details. It's a basic 2013 S60, black, with black leather interior with 23,851 miles. $44,000

Eh, I knew going in that any subscribers to EV-CPO are transient until they find a car. Good thing is that there always should be (hopefully) more new people looking for CPO cars. ;)

Congrats on your S60! Great deal.

That's a great deal you got and inline with discussions we've had a while back on this thread that $40-something is what made sense for an S60, especially considering the newly announced RWD 70. Congrats on a great car at a great price!

Not much of a discount though as it is missing the Next Gen seats. We've seen inventory cars close to that much and they have the benefit of the rebates plus unlike a CPO car you have the option of purchasing an extended warranty.

That's the lowest price I've seen so far on a CPO and with leather too and I believe Supercharger access. Anyone seen anything lower? I'm still confident of my sub $40k S60 CPO by Jan 2016, especially after this data point.

Holy Cow!!! That's an amazing find. I picked up my P85 today and it is absolutely amazing. This thing is a rocket!! I was doing some research on the battery types (A, B, C,D) and it seems almost all low VINs have the A battery from what I saw. So I told the delivery specialist about A and B battery types and then dropped to the floor to check out my sticker... BOOM B Battery!! don't know how, because this is a 55xx VIN. Icing on the cake!!

The car was in immaculate condition and everything worked perfectly!

Some quick pics from delivery. hopefully I will have more tomorrow
