ELRev Considering rumors on the aesthetics of the Model 3 have ranged from "a smaller Model S," to "unlike any other car on the road," it dawned on me today just how little we might know about not only what the Model 3 body might look like, but more specifically what colors it might come in. Colors! Fun! Yay! Surely everyone has an idea of what color - both inside and out - they dream of getting, but because we know so little, and because the full range of interior and exterior color options may remain a mystery for months (years?) to come, I thought it might be interesting to hear everyone's thoughts on their dream configuration given previously or currently available colors.
Starting with interior, it seems plausible to expect (at least) the following options:
As for exterior, past and present, we may see:
- Black Cloth
- Black Leather/Next Gen
- Grey Leather/Next Gen
- Tan Leather/Next Gen
- Ultra White Leather/Next Gen
Who knows what else we might see in Tesla's first mass market car, but most of these options seem like pretty safe bets to make their way into the Model 3 Design Studio. That being said, which interior/exterior color combo are you planning on?
- Black
- White
- Titanium Metallic
- Midnight Silver Metallic
- Obsidian Black Metallic
- Midnight Blue Metallic
- Silver Metallic
- Pearl White Multi-coat
- Red Multi-coat
- Green (Discontinued 11/14)
- Brown (Discontinued 11/14)
For me, I really hope they bring back the green exterior. I dream of a configuration of that dark, understated green, with the ultra white, futuristic interior. Not sure if the leather upgrade will be in my budget, but this thread is all about hope, so the dream lives on!
Mar 29, 2016
Steepler2k I'd love dark green with a beige or light grey interior leather. Failing green, a dark brown, beige/gold, or dark grey. Can't do a black interior. Too hot in the South.
Mar 29, 2016
Model 3 Almost as I could have said it my selfBut not too dark colors. And living somewhat more to the north I may very well do with a black interior - as long as it is not (fake) leather.
And for the exatct color I want:

pmich80 I"m hoping for a Dark Metallic Blue exterior with a Dark Brown Interior Leather. It's my perfect combo. I haven't seen Tesla with Dark Brown. (I'm not a huge fan of the Tan) as far as I know. Hopefully they offer it as an option this time around. I'm trying to avoid going with plain black.

Muaddid The electric green of roadsters was something... but I think for my model 3 the best would still be signature red...
Since neither will be are available, either white or blue I think
Mar 29, 2016
ummgood I used to think the same thing. We ended up getting a lightly used van and I was regretting that it had a black interior. The salesman told me again and again that because the paint was silver the interior wouldn't get as hot. I now am a convert. Black interior with light exterior all day long. The light exterior repels the heat and the dark interior hides stains and looks better longer. Plus you can use a sharpie to touch up nicks in the interior. I know don't laugh but it works. We also got a light tint on the driver and passenger door windows and that helps tremendously. So I probably would love a silver Model 3 with black leather interior.

ummgood I really hope they come out with a bright red. I really like solid red cars. Not the deeper red that has metallic. It would be nice if it was included as a base color. I think it would be appropriate if the Model 3 was to compete with performance versions of say the Audi RS5 or a BMW M3.

Mar 29, 2016
MrRandyB I have always really liked white cars with black interior but I am really liking the Midnight Blue Metallic with Grey Leather/Next Gen
Mar 29, 2016
Boourns Correct. Tesla's current tan is lighter. If I were limited to options Tesla provides in the S currently I'd probably have to go with black. We have had cars in the past with lighter color leather, and they often get stained blue from sitting in them with jeans. Not sure if this is a problem with the Model S.
Mar 29, 2016
eliassorensen Midnight blue is without a doubt my favorite TMS color. But it'll depend on how the 3 looks which color I want.
Mar 29, 2016
Valdric Lim I see no point in offering a grey interior; grey seats look as if your car is covered in dust lol!
For simplicity of Model 3's manufacturing, ideally they shouldn't bother with the stock white/black options. Pearl White/Obsidian Black should be included in the 35k price, while the rest of the options will need to be charged a little more.
So thus we have:
1. Pearl White
2. Obsidian Black
3. Metallic Red-Multi-coat
4. Midnight Blue Metallic
5. Titanium Metallic
6. Silver Metallic
And 3 interiors:
1. Ultra-White
2. Tan-Brown
3. Black
As volume production has to be higher, the less important variables there is, the better imo.

ppower I really wish for a BROWN leather instead of the tan. Most brands have one they sell in limited numbers because dealers are scared of them, but people love them once they get them: Mercedes Cognac, Volvo Beechwood, BMW Saddle, or even more orange like Volvo Atacama, Infiniti Bourbon, BMW Cinnamon.
For paint, the current blue is amazing, but I'd go with the discontinued brown as well. Pearl White or red if I got panoramic roof for contrast, but that will just make cooling it in the summer more difficult.
Mar 30, 2016
Valdric Lim Yea thinking of it again, brown leather is actually nice when matched with a cool exterior. For example my dad recently got a Peugeot 3008 with Grey exterior and Brown interior.
Mar 30, 2016

Ryan Reynoso I agree! It brings out a lot of the lines of the car more! You think they'll offer this color?
Apr 1, 2016
ummgood I was in love with the matte black/gray too until I saw it during the test drives. The problem if you look is all the oils from people's hands making the car have a shiny oily look around the trunk and door handles. That would drive me bananas. I have a coffee mug like that at home and I am constantly wiping it with a napkin to get the prints off of it because it bugs me. I couldn't imagine having a car that had that problem. Otherwise if it was clean with no oil spots I think it looks amazing! Very Gotham city looking.
After seeing the debut I think I'll probably go for the silver. It looks striking!

GeekGirls I hope Tesla continues to expand their color palette. The original offerings all but monochromatic but they've made some reasonable additions since. If I were choosing among today's options? We'll go with either the red multi-coat, the titanium metallic, or midnight silver metallic. Otherwise I'd be open to lots of options. I wonder if they'd consider offering the signature red? It's a stunning color and since there won't be any signature Model 3s...
As for the interior, I really like the two-tone grey we have in our Model S. Leather and cloth would both be viable options for us. The one thing we're certain about is that we're not wild about a black interior.
Apr 1, 2016
Tina C For interiors, I like leather in tan, grey, or brown. No black or white (for me) because it either shows dirt or dust too badly, or is too hot in warm climates. I like the wood trims, but that might not be an option for the 3.
Exterior colors - lets get a bit more fun! Add to the existing color palate and have some based on jewel tones - Dark Amethyst purple, London Blue Topaz (teal), Aquamarine or Amazonite (aqua blue/green), Carnelian (medium dark orange), Ruby red, Emerald green, Jade green, etc. Have colors with a clear coat and a bit of depth. Don't add solid primary or florescent colors, they can look gaudy or flat.
I wouldn't buy the matte grey shown in the reveal. In one way it looked cool, but in the other it looked like it was just painted with primer. Plus every single finger print showed on it (in the test drive videos).

el crucero I see that TM has now posted the Model X configurator on their website. I was curious to see if the Model X would have a different color palette than the Model S. It doesn't. Same color selection. I fear that TM might do the same with the Model 3 - same color palette as S. In my opinion, this would be a mistake. I think the Model 3 should be available in some "jelly bean colors"........which would look inappropriate on an S but would really bring out the character of a 3. You can see from some of the clever Photoshop renderings in this thread what some of these colors do to make the Model 3 really fun!

timk225 I don't want to pay extra for metallic paint, so the base version of paint should have a rainbow of colors. I'd like the 1971 B3 Blue that Dodge used on their cars, sometimes called "Petty Blue" . Richard Petty painted his stock cars with it in the early 70's. It's a nice bright sky blue color. Ford is copying it by using a nearly identical sky blue color on Mustangs, I see them regularly.
I would like a non-black interior, but I do not care about leather or extra cost anything. So base cloth seats should be available in tan or grey, not just black.

Jayc To properly compare and contrast colors, I think what we need is a set of Model 3 images covering all angles especially the front and back. Also, I know that super thin profiled tires look great but we really need realistic sizes and if ever there is a way to remove all window tint because you are not going to find a car coming out of showroom with dark tints all around. In other words, rather than covering just one particular angle when the car looks best, the right way to compare is to see all angles and with more realistic production car characteristics.

EVnut I'm in the camp with those who feel that mundane colors should not be the norm for this car. Were it up to me, basic white and black and silver would not even be on offer. Some genuinely unique-to-Tesla colors are in order. And I don't mean just their version of "red." It is time for some truly stand-out colors. The folks buying these aren't likely going to want to be in an invisible car like a Honda Civic... or Chevy Bolt.
Plus... if purple isn't going to be offered, this is going to cost me a lot of money for custom paint!
