The Tesla Factory is now building your Model S....what are the process stages ? part 1
Nov 1, 2013

I logged into my dashboard today and saw that the status changed from "Sourcing Parts"...to now, The Tesla Factory is now building your Model S. This seems strange as my delivery date isn't until 12/9, almost 40 days from now. So, a couple of questions:
1. Is the factory really building the car given the 40 days? 2. What are the various process stages that change on the Dashboard?
Thanks.

I got my first call today from my delivery specialist who said "it could be 12/14 or sometime the following week".
My dashboard also changed today to "In Production The Tesla Factory is building your Model S".
Must be a long production run!

Me too - got "In Production" just today. Last I heard my Production End Of Line date was Nov 18 and delivery is "conservatively" scheduled for Dec 9. So now I'm setting myself up for disappointment by hoping for a late November delivery

Confrirm 9/12 vin < 23000 saw in production a couple of days ago and now I saw this. So the car was only in production for a couple of days. How long now it's complete? My delivery date is 11/12 or 11 days from time of writing at the Palo Alto Showroom. Can't imagine it takes 11 days to get prepared and delivered across the bay. Any ideas?
Production Complete Your Model S is being prepared for pickup or delivery.

Mine showed in production when it was already on a truck

I fully understand the fluctuations post-production, but before it enters production it's a slippery road if the status cannot be believed. People will take the In Production change literally and start preparations by locking in financing, insurance etc that might have some kind of reprecussions if the actual fact is that the car enters production 1-2 months later in reality.

I have VIN 26190 and like the others my dashboard switched to in production Friday Nov 1. My delivery on the East East is for week of December 16. Assuming 10 days (or so) to cross country it would be competed by November 30th. Maybe the change just means the car will be built in month of November? I'm not getting my hopes up that it will be delivered early.

A friend of mine here on the east coast ordered his at the beginning of June. It went into production (per the dashboard) in mid Jun but was delivered in mid July. We may be looking at something similar here. I know in the recent past we were seeing delivery 1-2 weeks after the car entered production depending on location. I think the best bet is to talk with our respective Delivery Specialists and see what they say. I've not spoken to mine since last week when he told me to expect my MVPA the week of 11/04 so I'm waiting on that to see. I was kind of surprised to see the dashboard change as my expected In Production was 11/18. Even with the above, I now have a little more hope of a pre-Thanksgiving delivery.

I ordered and confirmed my S85 on Sept. 29, 2013, at that time I was told to expect delivery early November, could be as early as late October. However, my dashboard soon there after showed, late November. Finally my DS emailed me for November 29 delivery, which is more in line with Time line stated on Tesla web site. Then I received another email from my DS, saying that delivery date is going to slip, due to Thanksgiving holidays. Now I don't know what to believe. Does any body else has same experience? i.e. moving /inconsistent dates. BTW: Dashboard changed yesterday from "sourcing parts" to "In Production"

Based on the Nat Geo megafactories documentary on Tesla, each car takes about 3-5 days to go from rolled aluminum (assuming no inventory of body panels) to completed car. It would be great if they told you when your vehicle is beginning the assembly line process but there are most likely practical limitations that would prevent this.

It seems that East Coast deliveries take longer compared to West coast, probably due to transportation factor.
- - - Updated - - -
Thanks elecblue. I failed to mention that after confirmation I made changes, first from Blue paint to multicoat Red, and then yet again yesterday, I asked my DS to include Power Folding Mirrors, which were not available at the time I confirmed my order. On both occasions, TESLA accommodated my requests, in-spite of the fact that rules do not allow any changes subsequent to confirmation. May be that is what caused the slippage. A great positive however is that TESLA and it's representatives are extremely accommodating and provide exceptional Customer Service, which indeed is indicative of a Great Company.

I was under the impression that never aired. How did you manage to find it?
Could those who have posted about their Dashboard page suddenly showing their car in now in production and what their delivery date is please also post the date they confirmed their order and if their car is a 60, 85, or P85? That would be helpful information.
I ordered and confirmed an 85 on Sep. 29th and my dashboard still shows "sourcing parts" and delivery as being in December (no date given).
Thanks.

The date went away like ecarfan said.
It does show this, though: "Estimated Delivery We will contact you to schedule your exact delivery date and time."
They contacted us a week or so ago saying production was to begin 11/25. We're really hoping Tesla is trying to get as many built as possible for their first full year of production, and they've accelerated the current US batch now that the EU run is over.
GO TESLA, GO!

MY P85+ also changed to "The Tesla factory is building your model S". Order confirmed 3rd September 2013, Vin by late September. Car was scheduled for delivery in january. The last time I spoke with a Tesla representative on the phone she said it won't be january, but february - possibly even late february...
I must ad that I am a european customer (AUSTRIA) and some might not understand my anger but waiting 4 months more when the car will be finished in like 5 days? I will call again tomorrow but this would be nothing short of pathetic. WTF are they doing with the car? Putting it on a 4 month cruise ship so it will be delivered happy and rested? I don't get it. Model S have already been delivered to Austria so it would not be the first time for Tesla to ship a car to my country. Yes I am frustrated cause all of this s*** does not make any sense.

Nov 4, 2013
Gizmotoy
No reason to get frustrated over your car taking an extended cruise, it has to be a mistake. Tesla simply can't be building 3 months worth of cars this week. There's no way.
Your DS has better insight than the website as to when your car will be ready. Trust what they told you, not the website.

Dates/config in sig. I logged into my dashboard after a few days and noticed the change as well. Unsure of exact date of change.
My theory TIM: Hey Bob, we have a lot of owners asking when their car is going into production. How do you propose we handle that? BOB: Don't worry, I'll take care of it. [flips everyone who was "Sourcing Parts" to "In Production"]
Instead of asking who else was flipped, maybe we should ask if there are any folks who finalized 4-8 weeks ago that DON'T say "In Production". It's been my experience at many large companies in all sort of industries that there are very low tech solutions behind processes. I wouldn't be surprised if someone at Tesla owns an Excel spreadsheet which have all the statuses for each order with VIN assignments and order status. This is probably uploaded as a flat file into a DB somewhere which is referenced by the website. Yes, it's a guess but given how inaccurate the statuses are based on experiences on this site leaves me highly skeptical that the website is tied to sourcing and production systems.

@staze - I agree with your theory. Confirmed my order S85 on 9/13. As of 11/1 my dashboard still said sourcing parts. I NEVER saw it say "In Production". I logged in this morning - 11/4 - and it now says "Production Complete". My delivery date is 11/11 and it's being shipped to Atlanta so I was getting very nervous considering it's already been pushed once. Since I am trusting that my $95k car wasn't thrown together in a weekend, I'm assuming that TM has just been slacking on keeping everyone's individual status up to date. It's much easier to do it in batch every couple of weeks.

We just had FedEx drop off the envelope that contains the Registration of New Vehicle form and Statement of Deliver Outside of California form, and temporary registration tag. They even have neat little Tesla "T" stickies that show where to sign.
It also came with a prepaid and pre-addressed FedEx envelope to return the documents. I'm keeping the stickies

After getting my hopes up when my status changed to In Production, I emailed my DS to see if I might get an early delivery surprise. He claimed (heard this on the message board from others, too) that the dashboard has bad data in it and cannot be relied upon. To which I said, why? It's not that hard, either keep the data accurate or don't show anything. Consistently posting bad data to customers (via dashboard) seems inconsistent with Tesla as a company. I guess every company has holes in their "game" and just because I'm whining over this doesn't mean I'm any less thrilled with the car, etc. You can point out the bad (dashboard) along with the good (everything else), and still be a fan of the company. But, Hey Tesla, fix the dashboard, it makes you look bad to your customers, in my opinion.

Well I did get the reply that the dashboard is accurate in the fact that my car has ended sourcing parts and is now in pre-production. This means that it has all the nuts and bolts with Mario's car label on it and now waits for factory assembly. However, that queue may be from days to months

@blufintuna: Welcome to the Forums! It's a great place to pass the time while agonizing over delivery. I share in the frustration with the lack of updates but I'm just happy there is a car like this on the market and I feel fortunate that I can afford it! This is another example of Tesla's growing pains. I'm hopeful they will one day have their updates in order.
Neat story about Elon. My wife is an advisor for Space X right now. While she hasn't met Elon she is amazed at how much detail is run by him for his approval. The staff regularly mention his name when providing her with feedback and decisions. He really continues to be the driving force behind his companies - similar to Steve Jobs.

I heard from my DS today also. I got two email from Tesla. One asking me to electrically sign for my upcoming purchase. The other asking me to pay for it already. I sent my DS an e-mail asking if I could pay for it at delivery and he replied that would be acceptable. I also had to provide a copy of my insurance card. Not that I am too worried about Tesla, but lately I have gotten stung twice paying for something BEFORE delivery and I am now twice shy about doing that again. I MUCH prefer transferring funds at time of possession.

Appears that dashboard updates are inconsistent. Mine has gone from "sourcing parts" on 09/29 to "in production" on 11/01 to yet another addition that as of 11/05 it shows "delivery date 12/06". But just like most of you who are waiting, I hope it sooner than later.

@doctorwho I think it depends on state regulations whether they can accept payment at delivery or payment prior to shipment.
I still have nothing (for weeks) on the Dashboard. My DS also told me he "...would try to find me a copy of the v.5.6 Owner's Manual". For the life of me I find this frustrating. It is a .pdf file for crying out loud! Additionally he told me the reason the Dashboard is mostly out of whack is because they just began "a new assembly tracking system". Maybe Tesla is using the same folks as ObamaCare????

Yup. Me too. No difference to me since I didn't believe it in the first place.
@e4chan. It's possible. I would guess that if they outsource only the cell production to Panasonic the recovery would be quicker since the ramp up time will be minimal. If they are outsourcing the entire pack production it may take longer. Their "secret sauce" is not the battery (cells) tech itself, but rather the configuration of the cells. Given the mundane nature of the underlying tech I believe this is a small bump in the road.
I for one plan to jump on the investment bandwagon soon with this temp drop in share price. I feel like a missed the boat since I only was turned onto the car/company this summer.

cwave1 it wouldn't surprise me if our two cars weren't going to be very close in manufacturing if nothing else than by color since they tend to paint in color batches (at least that's the idea I got from the mega factories episode).
