2014 Dodge Durango which I love but a sneaky suspicion is I will love my S more. I will miss that beautiful grumble of the V8 though.

2007 VW Passat 3.6L gasoline. It's been a workhorse of a car but her time has come to go out to pasture. I hope I get the same longevity out of my MS 90D. It's status has been "undergoing final inspection, detail, and charging in preparation for delivery" for the past two days and the wait is killing me! I was hoping to get a call today so I could pick it up this weekend but that appears to not be in the cards. Patience is a virtue but I'd rather be patient in my new car!

I'll be coming from a 2014 VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI, I'm moving sooner due to the TDI scandal; however, my plan was for my next car to be a Tesla... just leading me to getting a 60D vs 90D and leasing vs buying. But excited all the same.

Prior to the 2014 VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI, I had a 2010 Sportwagen TDI (upgraded to the 2014 for lower payment & rearview camera)... before that was a 2005 Honda V6 Hybrid Accord.

2014 Mercedes E class wagon. I loved that car but the wife hated it ( it's a soccer moms car she would say.) What made me consider replacing it was Tesla came out with AWD. I live on a very steep hill in snow country and that feature is non negotiable. Also with the hatch back design I could put almost as much stuff in the back as the merc on a run to Home Depot.

I assume your Touareg is included in the TDI settlement? Are you planning on selling back to VW & taking the compensation? This is what I'm planning for my 2014 Volkswagen Jetta Sportswagen TDI, it arguably will result in me getting pretty much what I originally paid for my vehicle back + money after paying off my loan will be more than I needed for my Tesla Lease.

I may qualify as the biggest jump in value. I have a 1992 Buick Roadmaster I bought new that has been a great car, but I needed a newer car as a road car. I got majorly upsold into a Model S, but except for the seats and so-so cabin storage, it's a better car than the Buick.

People used to smaller cars were telling me I need to get used to the size of the Model S, but it has the same wheelbase and same width as the Buick.

Every car I've driven up to now has had a GM small block V-8:
1967 Chevy Caprice - handed down to my sister in 1974 when my parents bought a new car, then handed down to me when I started driving.
1974 Chevy Caprice - handed down from my father when he bought a 1983 Olds 98. I think the 1967 coming back prompted him to get the Olds. The 74 was the only problem car I've ever had.
1981 Chevy Impala - Bought a used company car that had been driven off road a fair bit when the 74's head gasget blew and the transmission was showing signs of needing serious work. I put 70K almost problem free miles on it.
1992 Buick Roadmaster - Bought new, it's been super reliable but it is elderly at this point

@wdolson I agree I'm coming from a vehicle that's effectively the same size as the Model S, definitely handles similarly... but know it was a bit of a difference going to my current vehicle from a smaller sedan. Actually one of the selling points for the Model S for me is the storage space in the back with the seats down. Effectively the same as the VW Sportwagon I currently have, so no loss of carrying ability.

Well, there was some poetic license, but... the civic, took it for an oil change and the oil filter wasn't screwed back on properly, all the oil ran out, overheated, warped block. On the toyota truck, freeze plug fell out, all the water ran out, overheated, warped block. No more infernal combustion for me... got a folding bike to keep in the back of the model S, all good, just gotta make sure I don't spring a leak myself, I'm pretty sure if I'm vigilant I can handle it...

2014 dodge durango r/t - goes to the wife and will be the new mom-mobile (I'm not ready to give it up and will probably run it into the ground). The stock exhaust notes on that beast are incredible!

2014 jeep Cherokee that the wife was driving - what a P.O.S. that turned out to be. Giving it back to jeep and paying the ETF to break the lease.

2014 Nissan GT-R. Awesome handling car and lots of power so obviously I am getting a P90DL. I hope I don't miss my GT-R, even though it has 4 seats just not as 'usable' a car compared to the S. I guess if I still feel the need for a fuel burning ICE car I still have my 2 Mazda RX-7's (85 & 93)

2012 Acura TL SH-AWD Advance. And before that a 2007 Acura TL Type-S. Have to say the Model S P85D Ludicrous brings back my favorite things of the Type-S with the tight sport sedan exterior styling, carbon fiber and black leather interior, touch screen, large black wheels, and lunge-forward engine. I don't think Acura has ever come close to capturing the spirit of the Type-S since then. The P85D also reminds me of the "nimble beast" feel of the TL SH-AWD. I'm sure you can guess exactly what color interior and exterior my TL's were. ;)

Any other former TL owners here?

The storage space is great. My SO's Impreza wagon has been the hauler because the space was broken up in my Buick. But in the first month we've run into two situations where the Tesla could haul something that was too big for the Impreza. The hauling capability is great and was a selling point for me.

I have the cloth seats, they are hard and hit both of us in the wrong spots. The support for my thighs is also marginal. We went back to the Tesla store and sat in the next gen seats. They were much more comfortable. I need to contact the service center and find out how much they are going to nick me to replace the front seats. I know some people have done it.

Lol. It only has 5200 miles on it. We live in dc and my wife never drives. I guess I shouldn't say it's a sh*tty car, rather it's not as nice and/or doesn't drive as well as other cars (including jeeps) I've had in the past. I guess I knew that going into it, thinking it was not a big deal since it would just be sitting in my driveway collecting dust. In any event, we don't need it so I'm turning the lease in early.
  • Jul 11, 2016

Ah yeah, the VW settlement is currently only in the USA. Might be worth seeing if the VW emissions violated the AUS emission laws, and if there is a pending lawsuit there. If there is no action being taken in Australia then unless you create your own suit it's unlikely that you'll be offered anymore...
  • Jul 13, 2016
    championi
There is a law suit currently underway, however our emission laws aren't as tough as they are there in the states, so VW are offering a simple fix to address the issue. Don't think much will happen here in Australia in terms of compensation
  • Jul 13, 2016
    javawolfpack
@championi that sucks, I considered filing my own suit but the class action settlement is more than adequate for what I was looking for in terms of compensation here... but the fact I was lied to and the emissions were one of the only reasons I bought my VW kind of pissed me off.

    2008 Pontiac G8 GT 6.0
    2014 Tesla Model S 60
    2016 Tesla Model X 90D

As you can see, I upgraded engine size with each car and, since you typically can't get much bigger than 6.0L, electric was the logical next step.

The S60 was very similar in performance to the G8 which is a very powerful car with a lot of low-end torque. The S60 felt faster still.

The X90D is more powerful yet so I guess my Model 3 is going to need to be ludicrous.

Edit: Also note that none of my cars were front-wheel-drive. That's a prerequisite for being a "car guy" in my opinion.

Had a 2013 M3 Convertible; last year of the naturally aspirated V8. That car was 0-60 in 4.7 sec. It was a super fun car to drive. And being in California, the convertible was fun. Sold it a week ago to a dealer. Did a bit better than what Tesla was offering as a trade-in and way better than CarMax (they don't know how to "value" the fact that the car was still under warranty).

I came from a Mercedes CLS 550, which I loved. It had tons of power and was very sporty. I can happily say I will never go back to an ICE and I am sold on Tesla. The original S was actually built on the CLS frame and the steering wheel, control stalk and several controls are still made by Mercedes, which makes it a very easy transition from a CLS to a MS.
  • Aug 3, 2016

Say what? Correct me if I'm misunderstanding you but the original model S was not built on a CLS frame. Ignore this post if you are referring to something else.
  • Aug 3, 2016
    RobStark
If by frame you mean chassis that is and has always been a Tesla original design.

Mercedes sold their steering wheel, control stock, and switch gear division to German supplier Thyssen-Krupp. So Tesla now buys those items plus steering wheel column/shaft from Thyssen-Krupp not Mercedes/Daimler.

coming from 2 compliance EVs, the jump to model S was not as jaw-dropping as it would have been from an ICE. its just a larger car so it drives more comfortably.

My previous cars (I replaced 2 cars with my Tesla) were a 2014 Porsche cayman and a 2013 Chevy Volt ("gateway" EV). The Porsche was for weekends, and the Volt was my commuter car. I rarely drove the Porsche, particularly with 3 young kids. My wife has a big family Van that handles my kids and thier million activities.

When I began researching the Model S and visited for a test drive, my specialist informed me that the CLS I was driving had the same "footprint" as the MS, because they used this as a base for the MS prototype - he was an early Tesla employee and seemed to know what he was talking about.

He told me it would be a smoother transition for me than others, because the CLS and MS have the same dimensions as a result of the original design being influenced by the CLS chassis. He didn't' say it was a CLS chassis today the model S, but he said it was used in early prototypes. The steering column and signal stalks are almost identical, which I can attest to. Whether Daimler makes them or a 3rd party, they're the same.

The "footprint" is probably just the wheel base and chassis size. Tesla wanted to make a luxury, full-sized sedan, so they probably just took the measurements from the CLS to get the size the car correct. The positioning of the battery pack and motors is vastly different than the positioning of an ICE and transmission, so they couldn't possibly have used the chassis from the CLS as the starting point for the Model S.

Any notable differences between the Volt and Model S, other than the obvious performance and range? IMHO, Volt is a lot more cost-effective as a daily driver.

The Model S also has an almost identical footprint to my 1992 Buick. I have found the size very familiar, my SO doesn't like big cars and driving the S has been an adjustment. She likes everything else about it though. She would have a P90DL if money was no object.

The Volt is an excellent commuter car, it's even fun to drive in city traffic due to the instantaneous torque. When it transitions to gas, it somehow is less fun..
However, the Model S is a car that I LOVE driving. The combination of the power, practicality ( I have 3 kids, and the room in the Model S on weekends is much appreciated) and features (autopilot!) make me smile daily. I almost (except for the occasional tight curve) never miss my Porsche, and definitely not my Volt.

If you are looking for an economical commuter that's more fun to drive than the prius, the Volt is a great choice. If you want to have the best car in the world, buy a model S :)
    Clearly, I'm a little biased..

I'm coming from a Porsche Cayman and expecting delivery of my MS early next month. To the Porsche people who recently posted here (@rcsting, @Filter): have you missed the handling at all? I do enjoy driving the Cayman, especially around curves. I'm of course looking forward to getting the MS, but since I had to sell the Cayman I hope I won't miss it too much.

I owned a Cayman S before my Boxster GTS and Macan. I have to admit that the Cayman/Boxster were the best handling cars that I have owned. The one downside of the Porsche is that other drivers were constantly wanting to race which got old. I would never street race them.

The Model S has the perfect overall package for me. The ride is amazingly comfortable and its very quick. There isn't mush body lean since the battery weight is so low and the acceleration never gets old in the Tesla. I see that you're in Atlanta where Porsche North America is located so you probably see quite a few Porsches in the area.

The Cayman, as you well know, is amazing in the curves. The Model S isn't close (my opinion) but it's a completely different class of vehicle.
It has excellent dynamics for a large sedan and compares favorably to a panamera. It's an all round athlete, not a track star like the Cayman.

If my wife would have let me, I would have kept the Cayman for the occasional weekend drive. It was definitely a fun car.

That said, I absolutely love the Model S and I don't think you will miss the Cayman. The Tesla has so many wonderful attributes, I am truly satisfied with it.

Thanks. Indeed, Porsches are pretty common around here. I haven't had a lot of issues with people trying to race me, likely because they are used to seeing Porsches all the time, but I wouldn't street race anyone either so I don't pay much attention. I definitely look forward to getting the Model S soon (Midnight Silver here too :D).

Thank you, I'm sure I will love the Model S. I know I will miss the Cayman every now and then as confirmed by both of you and I certainly wish I could keep it for the weekends, but I'm confident the Model S will be so great I won't think about it too much (if at all) once I actually have it here, can't wait!

Intended to trade my 2012 Prius V for a Model S. Ended up trading my 2012 Sienna SE for a Model X instead. Hope to hang on to the Prius V for a couple of years and trade it for a Model 3.

I leased a 2014 Lexus ES 350 and have owned mostly Lexuses (Lexi?) and Volvos for many years. The car was fine; flawless with regard to deficiencies. The ES went from 0 to 60 in 7.1 seconds; my S70 does it in 5.5 seconds (slow for a Tesla). Getting on a highway is like magic because it accelerates from a rolling start sans delay for the kickdown. Poof! I am at highway speed. American designed and manufactured. No regrets about getting my Tesla.

I had a 1999 Mercedes C230 that my parents gave to me in high school. It lasted me several years until 2015, as I was still in school and barely drove, when it started to have major issues. My parents got a Nissan Leaf then, which I ended up sharing and driving more than the C230 until I decided to lease a 2016 VW e-golf in November 2015.

After I drove the refreshed Model S twice in July, I decided to order one and transferred my e-golf's lease to get my Model S. I initially was calling myself crazy (my family included) for transferring my '16 e-golf after only having it for 9 months, but my Model S is such an amazing car that I couldn't wait for the Model 3. ;-) We still have 3 reservations for the Model 3 though!

My previous vehicle was a 2013 Ford Explorer Sport. I have to say that buying a Tesla happened by chance after going to the Toronto auto show and looking at the Model S and new Model X and being offered a test drive. It's the test drive that actually sold me on it - worst conditions of the season (snow and ice) and it performed well beyond my expectations. It handles better in the snow than the Explorer, my wife's Subaru Forester and even my previous BMW 5 series touring.

A couple of years ago if you asked me what I thought of Tesla, my answer would have been it was a flash in a pan. 5000 Km in a little over 2 months says otherwise now.

My daily driver has been a full sized pickup for 15 years, with a Porsche 911 around for backup. Still need a truck, but not as much as before. Haven't driven a luxury sedan regularly in years, looking forward to it.

I'm coming from a 2000 Mazda Miata, which is my first and only car, purchased in 2010 with 45,500 miles. Six years, zero speeding tickets, a rebuilt engine, and 90,000 more miles and it's time to retire the Miata from its duty as a daily driver. The Model S is going to be my new daily driver with the Miata sharing weekends and track days with my Suzuki supermoto and Ducati superbike.

My wife has a 2008 Acura RDX that we plan to replace with an Audi Q7 next summer, unless we come around to the idea of an X (we're not sold on the styling quite yet).

We're still waiting on our delivery date, but it should be mid-September. We're getting pretty excited!
