I guess Steve Jurvetson got his Model S:

Well technically not number one, but he's got the first one of the line

When was that taken? That's right on campus.

    Note the carbon fiber accents.

And I guess that Elon got his over the weekend as well! It shouldn't be long before the Model S gets into the hands of a journalist or two.

Yeah, it's looking more and more likely I'll go with the silver myself.

How many founders are there? I don't believe that delivery of a vehicle to #1 and #2 confirms "actual" customers will be given vehicles on 6/22. If there are more than 20 founders, would count on them getting cars at the event.

Yeah I saw P something but it didn't make sense to me since I always think of P as production and not sig or founders when talking Model S.

I agree - the P85 logo might look a little silly. It might be worthwhile to start a poll on a factory debadging option such as in Europe. I'm sure there's a lot of us out there, maybe Tesla will take a hint.

Well, the occasion of Steve getting his car made me revisit an audio clip of a conversation I had with him (and a bit with Franz at the end) at the Model S premiere back in March of 2009.

    http://teslamotorsclub.com/audio/Steve Jurvetson (some Franz) - Model S.mp3

Things I noticed listening again three years later:
    • We're very giddy talking about the car. (Perhaps slightly inebriated.)
    • There was no iPad yet, so we talk about the 17" touch screen like it's a big iPhone.
    • We talk about the concept of a cloud connected car like it's something new.
    • We mention haptic feedback in the display. A minor feature from which Tesla has since walked away.
    • Projected delivery by the end of 2011. Missed by only 6 months, which is pretty amazing considering they didn't even have a factory yet. (The then VP of Manufacturing had assured me that the would-be plant would be somewhere in SoCal.)
Amazing how quickly they got this together in only a few years. Congrats to the whole Tesla team! And congrats to Steve!

It would be a hoot if Elon managed to have a VIN # F00000 produced for his delivered Model S; thus being the first Model S . I always chuckle at the story of Jurveton's quick check writing skill that caught the Tesla Board and Elon himself by surprise.

I think the double entendre was intentional...

It's entirely possible that the Model S will be on the right, with Signature underneath in their script font for all signature cars. These Founders cars could easily have been badged differently for a reason.

First Detailed Photos of Founders Series VIN #1 (It's a beautiful-looking machine!)

I got an extended opportunity to photograph Steve Jurvetson's #1 Tesla Production vehicle before and after the 2012 Annual Meeting of Shareholders I attended with my wife at the Computer History Museum (how fitting!) in Mountain View, CA on June 6th, 2012.

After I saw it today I wished I'd reserved a signature for the color.
SIGNATURE RED IS BEAUTIFUL!! THE CAR IS GORGEOUS!!! I COULD NOT FIND ONE EXTERIOR FIT OR FINISH ANOMALY!

    Enjoy these photos, everyone!

    https://plus.google.com/photos/117433471618932049710/albums/5751183181825194433#photos/117433471618932049710/albums/5751183181825194433

[If you have Google+, please +1, comment and share these photos to help them get broader distribution for viral marketing to help TSLA.]

Note the special engraving on the badging. Also, the "P85" badge reads: "PHASE CURRENT AMPLIFICATION" under it. P85 = Performance 85 Kwh battery.

    VIN = 5YJSA1DP8CFF00001

Elon said during the annual meeting the idea was that founders would get their cars, first, to put miles on them to try to find any anomalies so they will be "as perfect as possible" when non-insider customers receive their Model S'. He said he spent the entire weekend with staff going over lots of little details -- stuff a "normal" customer probably wouldn't even notice.

PS. I'll post my lastest video interview with George Blankenship to another thread.

Yes, Doug, it sure does, but it's very short RC window, since they are delivering 10 units to "non-insider customers" on Friday, June 22nd, during a private company event.

When you look at the big picture, the delivery staging is brilliant (please correct my stage list if I made an error):

    1. Founders Series - have a vested interest in the success of TSLA so will report all anomalies and not publicize them.
    2. Roadster Owners Series - brand loyal customers who are already used to driving electric Telsa roadsters
    3. Signature Series - highly motivated and/or wealthier customers willing to loan TSLA $40K each to acquire one of the first 1,000 units (after founders)
    4. Production 85Kwh - highest range model so we won't see range anxiety complaints from these buyers.
    etc.

Yes, I stayed for an hour after the end of the annual shareholder's meeting waiting for Steve to emerge from his TSLA Board Meeting that was held right afterwards so I could ask him for permission to photograph the interior for TMC.

I would have stayed longer to get the interior pics, but my dear-wife-who-is-not-a-Tesla-fanatic-and-says-we-should-wait-to-buy-the-Mercedes-with-the-Tesla-skateboard-if-we-can't-lease-the-Model-S-so-we-can-get-rid-of-it-when-the-lease-is-over-if-there-are-any-problems-with-it  insisted that we had to leave at 11am to prepare for an important afternoon business meeting.

One thing I learned from TSLA staff is that they were told the panoramic roof sunshade blocks-out all the sun's rays, but "Steve didn't want it on his car." This is a panoramic sunroof deal-breaker for me, because we just took delivery of a 24-month lease on a 2012 Mercedes ML 350 Bluetec "clean" diesel with a panoramic sunroof (24 months to overlap our X P83 by a few months). It has an automatic sunshade made of a flimsy cheap nylon material that let's some of the sun through. A Mercedes design fail. My wife hates it, and won't even drive it until I get the darkest window film I can find applied to the front glass panel.

Lovely pictures. Comments: it looks like the turbine wheels aren't going to be mirrored, like some folks requested. I thought the CF on the nose of the car would include the area around the emblem. Doesn't look like that is the case. From the side view, the gap between the tailgate and panel looks a little big. It's hard to tell without seeing it live though. Otherwise, it looks amazing.

He didn't say nose "cone", just "nose" (I know... I would have said front end or something like that). I think he was referring to the carbon fiber under the chin (you know - the driveway scooper-upper) and was thinking there would be CF around the nose - as I would describe it - close to the Tesla emblem.
  • Jun 7, 2012

Would be nice. I'm still not totally sold on the gloss front nose piece... For those where bugs are inevitable (hot muggy central IL for example - evening driving is fraught with them), it would seem very tough to keep clean. Guess I should get on board, huh? It is what it is at this point. Can someone say 'aftermarket'? :D
  • Jun 7, 2012
    SigGuy
Yeah, the original plan was for CF to be included in at least part of the nose cone (above the chrome) but I was told they scrapped that. Too bad, I thought that would look nice an add something.

Thanks, gg. Yes, I should get a press badge for these events for better access and longer video interviews. Yesterday, George B. smiled, gave me a hearty handshake, and exclaimed: "Tesla Motors Club!" (I think he's seen the Youtube's I posted from the 4 Sig Colors event at Santana Row.) I did ask him for a pass to cover the June 22nd "first 10 non-insider cars" delivery at the factory, but he said that is going to be an internal company event + the 10 lucky customers, presumably. I guess one could always camp out outside the factory gates on Fremont Blvd. at the appropriate time and video the 10 new S Sigs driving away? LOL!

I'll look into what is involved to obtain an official "press" pass under auspices of TMC and contact Doug. Since I live right here in Fremont, it is pretty easy for me to cover all the important Tesla events for TMC.
