Hmm, his interior looks like piano black, but it also looks matte:

    s1-interior.png

..also thought he was supposed to keep quiet about it until 6/22

    *edit* another shot:

I doubt he's actively seeking an interview. When a camera crew shows up where you are and begins asking you questions, what do you do? And I'm sure Tesla will give him a pass...

Elon's S is black, vanilla interior, silver wheels and lacewood.

I believe its the carbon fiber finish; engle posted some photos showing the inside and I could make out the telltale diagonal line characteristic of carbon fiber.

Yeah, I guess I can see it a bit in the lower left of the second shot. Looks pretty subdued though in comparison to what has been previously seen.

The CF is matte finished and is quite beautiful. Worth getting Performance for that alone almost :)

He has at least two, one of which is red. He also has three Roadsters...
  • Jun 8, 2012
    vfx
I would guess the Red one is an "unofficial" car.

Roadsters are the P1 and his cherry red one and I saw him in a white one on the 405.

From engle's post #94 (sorry Doug not good with links) here is an enlarged version of the photo (cropped and enlarged).

Doesn't that look like a white Roadster behind the Black Model S in the photo linaser posted here?

Yea, that CF interior is the main reason I went performance.

Looked silver on my video but dunno.

Assume that's at his rental home.

The reflection on the paint job is almost as clear as in the glass. Nice and shiny!

Is he driving around with under inflated tires? The "Low Tire Pressure" dummy light is on! If so, he's killing his efficiency :)

I didn't notice that before. You think it is the tails matching the rims? I sure hope so! I like the exterior color combinations he chose.

Noted that it says "3G" for connectivity too...
  • Jun 18, 2012
    Lyon

I saw that too... I'm just hoping that 3G was all that was available in that location. Then again, given the area he's in that's not all that likely. If it's 3G I hope that it's HSDPA at least!

I don't know, but his mileage per watt curve looks a bit like the TSLA stock...

Seriously though, the photo sometimes accents that if you don't have a anti-polarizing filter (right?). I've heard that it doesn't get glare in real life. This weekend many of us will find out for sure...

This concern has surfaced many times, and everyone that I can think of who's seen the display in real life has mentioned that it's not a problem, even in sunlight.

The Sig Red without the smoked tails, looks horrible. There is something about all that chrome, the tack on cf spoiler and the clear tail lights that looks super gaudy to me. I really hope Tesla offers smoked tails as an option (or standard on the performance). If not maybe I should have went with a black exterior :crying:

Sadly, I thought the same when looking at the rear picture. It needs to be smoked Tesla, cammon! I think the excess of badges makes it worse.

Smoked tails work with white and black. Smoked tails with any other paint color will look tuner-ish.
  • Jun 19, 2012

Totally agree. I think the extra bright light is making the clear lenses stand out in the pictures.
  • Jun 20, 2012
    AnOutsider
Disagree. If they're "murdered out" maybe, but all the white/clear plastic showing in the aforementioned pic looks more tuner/altezza-like IMO

It might just be a camera trick/glare problem. No one has really mentioned this as a significant issue until:
    1. we noted a car with smoked tails
    2. We saw this picture.

I'm betting that it is perfectly satisfactory and we are getting suckered a little by the camera.
  • Jun 20, 2012

I wouldn't smoke them. They would look better sprayed with a candy red which would look cleaner/more oem.
  • Jun 20, 2012
    jomo25
I'm sure I missed it somewhere, But what exactly are "smoked tails"?

And please stop quoting the full post with all the pics! They've got me fretting about my data cap and I can't download Doodle Jump, post pics of my beach vacation, or stream the video of the winning jump shot! :)

    Blackened tail lights.

Everyone's commenting on the tail lights, what's up with all the fingerprints on his 17" screen. Again the light is probably hitting them just right to cause them to stand out, but they're still there. Think someone will make a plastic coating cover for the screen like they do for cell phones? The peel and stick kind. Or is it something you just need to clean with a rag once a week? I'd use a large lens cloth and lens cleaner.
  • Jun 20, 2012
    strider
My smartphone w/ a plastic screen protector still needs to be cleaned of fingerprints. As others have posted, glare has not been an issue by those who have actually sat in the cars while outside. I'm sure we'll get more feedback after this wkend.

I noticed some Tesla staff bending their finger and using their knuckle on the touch screen instead of a fingertip.
I gather that was being done to avoid fingerprints on the screen...

His comment from a blog post below that last link:

Jurvetson: 'Quite a few people and focus groups and such, and like Apple, sometimes you go with a hunch. Also like Apple, the hardware is a minimalist vessel for code. So it's easily upgradable and ties to web services.

I have not found the screen distracting. While parked, some of the information features are interesting. While driving, I use the big screen for a map and the dash screens for music and energy/regeneration monitoring (out of curiosity). The driver configures what goes where, and can have the dash areas go unused if so desired. Having had maps of various sizes in various cars, I think it's safer to have it large and easy to see at a glance. As for the A/C and music controls, the touch screen is not much different than a dedicated set of dials, with the exception of tactile feedback if you are feeling for a knob without looking. Many cars have done away with the center console button profusion (I remember some older cars with an impossibly complex rows of buttons for everything, including all radio presets). The common fixed function knobs, like volume control, are on the steering wheel, or in the case of driving functionality, in the usual places on the paddles around the steering column.

They can upgrade the UI over the air, and offer new features to the installed base over time.

A future UI feature I'df like to see is a "Make it Hot" button. This is for some ladies I know who insist on overriding every automatic AC feature until they get warm. So the button would pump max heat and seat heaters until it was unset, and then all would resort to auto. This would save a ton of button presses for our family use case. =)

By the way, I think the seat heaters are something out of this world. I don't think this amount of heat is possible in a gas-burning car (those cars can pump waste heat through the vents, but the car seat heaters run off the little 12V lead acid battery). With many kW of electrical power at the Tesla's disposal, they can really pump the heat.'

    sounds good to me!

Perhaps for another thread, but I still maintain that for local MP3s this shouldn't be needed. Hopefully the fetching only happens if you don't have artwork embedded in your MP3 file.

    > Jurvetson on his touchscreen

Am I allowed to dream of a 17in screen for my Roadster dash? With customizable displays like 8in high speedo, and 6in high duelling 'range estimators' below.
Oh yes, also a 4in high altimeter readout. That's all I really really want. 8^))

Well, not ideal, but its something to be expected with touchscreen instead of actual buttons. They considered haptic feedback (I read somewhere), but decided it wasn't useful.

But to be able to have large screen of the browser and map at the same time, it seems like its worth it to me.
