Earlian Sorry to interrupt, one question to the topic: was the email US-market only?
Jun 18, 2014
stevezzzz I'm over here (waves). We're traveling; my daughter's getting married on Friday. As a side note, our rental Hyundai Genesis is pretty nice, as ICE cars go, but it's no Model S.
The rest of you have missed out on one of life's more entertaining spectacles: watching a conference room full of men underestimate Bonnie. It's even more gratifying in living color and quadrophonic sound than it is here on TMC.

Blake Arrived here in China yesterday. In Chinese btw.
Jun 18, 2014
bonnie I thought it must have been, but then I saw it arrived in both Norway and China yesterday. Perhaps translation services are slowing it down?

FlasherZ Everyone knows that bits slow down when they're going through the ocean. C'mon, Princess, get with it.
(Okay, okay, had to take my shot. I have a nickname, too, it's just built into my username - "flash" refers to both my enjoyment of photography and also the result of driving a formerly-4-inch electrical panel screw through a misplaced 500 kcmil conductor once... once.)

bonnie I laugh every time. Then again, I'm easily amused. It's a low bar.

c041v Other companies have figured out how to get around this problem. I can't see why Tesla would do anything less than the current industry standard.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9me2BKB5GE
1:15 to 1:32 is the relevant section. The entire door is detached in the event of a rollover via explosive bolts after the car comes to a rest. I believe this innovation comes from the aviation industry.
ps - You're way outta line with the personal attacks.

CHARGER This is a safety concern I raised as the I believe the second question I ever asked on this site. Bonnie had no opinion she could only blabber like a weak clueless internet newb who only drives from lawn bowling two blocks to the library. who also happens to be a moderator. I appreciate the responses by those who understand my safety question. She Assumes again, I am not opposed to Falcon doors, I wouldn't like to be in an accident and have to break my way out as opposed to opening a door. Or as a paramedic trying to get someone out I prefer not have to break a window out and crawl through it and extricated somebody through it with a broken neck. I have extricated several patients from crashes with confirmed fractured c-spines who are walking quite fine today, good access is the key. I believe tesla has not fully thought through these doors as with the roof racks, and I chose to state this here. This is a little off the cuff 5 cent psyche assessment for someone special named Bonnie: obsessed with becoming an auctioneer, OCD TM, VERBAL D, online AOB, differential diagnosis: Dit Z, Humor nil, hydrocephalic.
Jun 18, 2014
bonnie I'll revise my opinion to misogynistic then.

JST That's actually precisely how the Mercedes SLS works.
VIDEO: Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG crash-test video shows off exploding door hinges - Autoblog
Well--not a timer that blows the bolts directly, but a timer that energizes the bolts after a certain amount of time upside down. Then pulling the handle blows the bolts and releases the doors.
And before anyone gets too tense, pyrotechnics are used in a variety of safety systems, including seatbelt pretensioners.
Jun 18, 2014
Doug_G Conventional doors jam all the time in accidents. This car has five doors, two of which are quite conventional, so there are plenty of ways to access occupants in an accident. I am sure Tesla is doing everything they can to ensure the car is safe - in fact they have gone above and beyond for the Model S, and I fully expect the same for Model X.
Also for the record Bonnie is one of the most respected members of this forum, and your bizarre attacks on her are entirely unwarranted.
Jun 18, 2014
dsm363 Yeah. It's a legitimate question but don't see the concern over any other car with doors.
The personal attacks definitely are not warranted or appropriate.

BerTX I'm delighted that the third row seating is optional. Now I don't have to figure out how to remove them, store them, and cover the hole they came out of...
Jun 18, 2014
anticitizen13.7 Uuuuugh this is going to be a long 3-4 months to wait to see the prototypes
Even with the Model S I did not feel this level of anticipation, probably because I didn't follow Tesla closely until the start of 2012. This is going to be crazier than the launch of the new iPhone.
Jun 18, 2014
MikeL After last night's romp thru the forum I should change my user name to "off topic" (is it already taken ?) anyway, see if this is better:
i definitely consider the third row seat optional to be a "downgrade". One that I will probably take and put the $ elsewhere in the order. I see it that way based on nothing more than my expectation, which is based on what I've seen in the 2 Alpha prototypes. Tesla has clearly stated the obvious which is that they might change some stuff  . OTOH, as I've said before, I'd like to have that big, flat, open back area. If the 3rd row is required to achieve that, AND 3rd row is thousand$, I'll look at the design and decide.
Jun 18, 2014
bonnie I'm with you. But I believe the flat space will be achievable without the third row. I don't want or need a third row and would rather have the space. Hopefully without a seat to fold down, there will be even more storage under the flat space in the back. Because. you know, the X is so small and has so little storage.

Jun 18, 2014
lloyds I have full faith in Tesla's designers and engineers. I think they will be able to sort this out as well.
Jun 19, 2014
Al Sherman FWIW: I did not get the email. ??? :frown:
Our MX will be my wifes car. She travels with a pack of dogs almost everywhere she goes. It's all about space. I'm glad the 3rd row is optional. I guess we'd get it and almost never use it (from experience) if it lays flat as one continuous area. Otherwise I think the good Dr. will say no since it's mostly about canine comfort.
As far as the crash/ rollover thing and the Falcon doors: I've been lurking here for a long time. I remember pages and pages of concerns about the MS before we ever saw one. Tesla NAILED it. It's a stunning and breathtaking achievement in many ways. NOT just the record breaking safety rating. I have no reason to believe that they wont nail it again. Including, but not limited to awesome safety ratings. I'll bet on it. It's simply gonna be another home run.
Additional FWIW: I like the "Tesla Princess" moniker. We should look at it as a badge of recognition, and an honor regardless of it's original intent, or source.
Either way, I'm in for a T-Shirt!
Jun 19, 2014
scaesare Several posts here have wondered about the frunk space in the X w/ the AWD running gear... there have been a few pic of the prototype where we can see what the remaining space is like after the "rear cavity" is no longer available... seems pretty sizable still:
![]()
(As an aside, I also think the falcon door safety concern is much ado about nothing... cars with gullwing/vertical doors are nothing new)
Jun 19, 2014
Vger I saw the prototype at launch, and as one can sense from the photo above, the frunk is much deeper than on the Model S, due to the taller hood profile.
Jun 19, 2014
AlMc I posted this in the 'Model X reservation tally' thread as well. It is a post from an 'X' thread over at the TM forum. I can not confirm authenticating:
Here's what I got from Tesla 10 days ago after complaining that the website lacks detail re:Model X and is out of date.
"We will begin production and deliveries of the Model X at the end of this year. Closer to that time, we will make the vehicles available in our showrooms for our fans to see in person and will have specifications regarding options, configurations, pricing and other details such as the ones your requested. Later this year you will receive an email inviting you to sign into your MyTesla Account to begin configuring your Model X, at which time we will have pricing of Model X and its options, along with details such as the ones you requested made available."
OK. I'll wait. One cool thing though. Tesla will have a store in a new mall that is being built nearby. As I am retired and have nothing better to do while waiting for my MX, I think I'll just hang out there as a "fan" after they open in October and bug them until they kick me out.)
EDIT: Realize this is a copy of a post from the TM forum by another forum member and while I want to believe it I pass it along as an FYI only.

Zaxxon Sounds like a great plan, Al.
Jun 19, 2014
NigelM Same here. They will be about 10 mins from our house; I'm starting to wonder if it's a response to me buying too many Teslas.
Jun 19, 2014
bonnie That was my thought when they put in a Service Center/Store about 5 minutes from my house.
Jun 19, 2014
Krugerrand The word 'stalker' just popped into my head. Don't know why.
Jun 19, 2014
bonnie No, 'stalker' would be if we kept driving by to see who was inside, or if we just kind of hung out on the street and watched who went in and out. We're talking about hanging out IN the store. No stalking about it. It's more of a 'shadow' thing.
Jun 19, 2014
Krugerrand But Princess Stalker has a nicer ring to it than Princess Shadow.
Jun 19, 2014
bonnie Princess TESLA.
Jun 19, 2014
Seattle That charger person. Some people just can't stop arguing - can't everyone see their brilliance? Being an ass is how you show you are right of course.
I'm just hoping Tesla can get the X finished so they can get on with my second tesla, the SUV version, AWD, of the model "E". That should come out in about 2021.
Jun 19, 2014
bonnie I'm looking forward to walking into a Tesla store and seeing multiple models on display, instead of just one. That will be exciting ... and it's not too far away.

Jun 19, 2014
DaveT Yes, it's be great to see a Model S and X in tesla stores. Can't wait.
Bonnie, what's your guess on when reservation holders might be able to do a test drive?
Jun 19, 2014
bonnie I'd bet there won't be an X drive event until late spring. They will need to first get crash testing done & prove road worthiness, iirc, before letting customers drive. Until then, we'll have to settle for the passenger seat.
Just a guess. I have no actual information.
- - - Updated - - -
I'm relatively sure that the very first time I drive an X will be when I get behind the wheel of mine. I can't imagine the drive event will happen that early in the Signature delivery timeline.
Jun 20, 2014
Paul Carter I'm hoping I can get delivery at the Factory with the first US signature batch. Fingers crossed!
Jun 20, 2014
markb1 Spring? If they start production is early 2015, that stuff will need to be done before spring. If it's like the Model S, the first test drives will start the day after the first deliveries.
Jun 20, 2014
RDoc I think Bonnie may be using statute dates rather than Tesla dates. The company moves so fast there's significant time dilation in their announcements.

Jun 21, 2014
DJ Frustration For the Model S, which was released in June of 2012, there was a Beta event in October 2011 where a Tesla staffer gave test rides (not drives). That equates to about eight months before release. I think it's logical to expect less than an eight month difference this time around between Beta to production. I'm hoping that they do a Beta event in the Fall and then still release Sigs in early 2015 (Jan or Feb).
Jun 21, 2014
bonnie Right. That stuff does need to be done before the first test drive. So again, I think late spring, giving time for all 'that stuff' to be done. Test drives and first deliveries will all happen on top of each other. And that's why I said I probably won't get to drive an X before I take delivery of my own. (Sig #2)
Jun 21, 2014
markb1 I agree that you won't get to test drive before delivery, given your sequence number. But my point is late spring would seem to put them behind the schedule in their email.

SigS905 I was the one who knocked off the CF accent. It was a demo wheel package. Not for the road.

WhiteKnight Perhaps swiveling second row captains chairs will be combined with the third row in a package. Generally if you've got a third row you want the captain's chairs in the second row.
