Nice! Just ordered. A lot cheaper than the executive seat option, plus you can still use the middle seat if ever needed.

Nigel, I hope you've seen this. Here's the rear center console you've been waiting for. Apparently, Tesla heard your request.

    LOL.

Kind of interesting though that these have become available out of the blue before the front center console ones in anything other than black. Wonder why. Design issues?

Love it, ordered immediately, thanks for the heads up. Available in all leathers and trim colors!

    Ordered mine.

I've wanted something for the back for a while, I even thought about getting executive read seats when I upgrade (but did not want to loose the rear seats folding down for the occasions I need the space)

I think its funny they have this in all finishes and leather colors, but the front console is still Piano black only.

I'd sent an email to Tesla last night about the grey leather being sold out and asking to get put on the waiting list. Email came back this morning saying it was a mistake and has been fixed. So I ordered.

This is what I received from Tesla in the UK:
"Unfortunately this item cannot be retro fitted and can only be added at point of order for new vehicles. Currently not a upgrade option on UK cars."

    Retrofitted??? Gary

Looking at the pictures the console looks identical to the console that comes with the executive seats option. Now I have no regrets about not having executive seats.

    - - - Updated - - -

There was another thread somewhere here that explained that there were some safety issues related to the flip up piece during crash testing which is why the other trims were delayed.

    Agreed 100%

I am thinking as well...Wish it was way lower... $300 or so
  • Feb 19, 2015

Keep in mind that while the console is installed in the car, it will be impossible to fold the larger portion of the seat back forward for carrying cargo such as tires in the rear trunk. The smaller, passenger side of the seat back will still fold forward, allowing for skis, etc. But for me, having to remove the console to carry a bicycle wouldn't be worth the hassle.
  • Feb 19, 2015
    wk057
As long as this console is detachable and will fit in the frunk or rear trunk lower portion, I think all will be well in the world.

I'm curious as to how it will hold up to bumps in the road with only one tie down point, though. Will review and report back when I get it.

It's available in grey, tan and black leather as expected. But it's also available in white leather? Why? There is no white leather trim?

Think of it this way. It's about $5000 cheaper than the executive rear seat option. And there is nothing about Model S ownership that makes sense financially. It's an emotional and satisfaction decision.

Same rationale here. Was starting to get jealous of the new executive seats, but now with this option I have something OEM, functional, and removable. Mine arrives tomorrow. Will take pictures. I have a feeling it'll look and feel great with the NextGen seats on my P85D.

That's what I've been thinking. Tesla cannot be happy with the company that did the front consoles.

Then again, maybe these were supposed to be ready 2 years ago, but nothing went up in the store until they were really ready. There were some picture back then...

    - - - Updated - - -

Wow. How are you getting yours so soon? I ordered the first day they were available, and have not even got the shipping confirmation yet. Maybe Tan/Obeche Matte is slower than Black/Carbon Fiber?

That's my guess too. FedEx shows it's on the truck for delivery.

Yes I ordered Tan/Obeche Gloss the very next morning, and I haven't heard anything yet. I also saw a note after placing the order on the confirmation page that said something like "Please allow 3-5 days for assembly of custom decor". If that had been the Front Center Console, it might have said to allow 3-5 years, instead!

Just got my shipping confirmation and tracking number. I only paid for ground shipping so probably be here sometime next week if it's coming from California. Given the history with the center console I'm really amazed at how fast has been.

Ordered yesterday morning. Rec'd this morning. Installed in ~30secs. Looks great, doesn't move around (there's a nice rubber pad underneath to prevent sliding); the back of the unit is flocked to prevent any rubbing on the leather seat. There's a removable rubber mat inside and a flocked tray that can be removed or positioned at the front or back.

My only complaint is that the interior compartment is about 1/2" too short to fit an iPad inside.

    P.S. I have Tan/Carbon-Fiber.

Very nice. I pulled the trigger this morning on the nappa black leather and black decor. I have the rear seat cup holders, the ones that are the adjustable straps, but my kids accidentally step on them all of the time and pop out strap. It's always a pain to put them back in. I'll be glad not to have to deal with that again.

WRT cost: the unit seems to be excellent quality. $700 is a bit steep IMHO but its less than the headache of having nothing in the back seat.
  • Feb 20, 2015
    commasign
Lol. NigelM just beat me. But here is my black/carbon. Build quality is solid though it's a lot lighter than I had imagined it would be. I love the solution they came up for securing it (versus having to use a seatbelt). When tight, it doesn't really budge though you can still lift the front up off the seat about an inch. The felt material for the cell phone holder, and the yacht floor like rubber on the bottom are nice touches. Color and trim is a perfect match. I think it's well worth the $700 at least when compared with the pricing of other Tesla accessories (remember the $700 carbon fiber yacht floor?).

@NigelM (and others who have received): How well does it stay planted in place? Seems like a bump or just minor lifting on the front side would move it. (Mine hasn't shipped yet...)
  • Feb 20, 2015
    NigelM
It's well seated, install with the clip provided then pull that tight. It really doesn't move from side to side at all, of course I wouldn't put a Venti Starbucks in there and then take it on to the track. You can lift it slightly from the front, but not that far and with normal (or even spirited) driving it sits just fine, including over speed bumps (assuming you don't take those at 50mph).

The stitching on this console is light grey and will not match those of us who have black stitching in our cars. This is also an issue for the center console. Apparently Tesla is only making them available in light colored stitching, which is kind of an F-U to early owners. My car was delivered in August 2013 and all surfaces have black stitching. Neither console will match my car, and Tesla said they are not making a version with dark stitching.

    Thanks for nothing.

Very cool!! Can you or Nigel comment on the armrest capability of the center console to replicate the door's armrest comfort? Meaning, do you have to lean into the center a bit to get your arm to comfortably rest on the console, or is it fairly symmetrical in position (and height)?
  • Feb 20, 2015
    NigelM
Pretty symmetrical in position but not height, it's lower than the door armrest.

    - - - Updated - - -

Yes. You have to reach in the trunk to release the hook but uninstall is about the same as install i.e. ~30 secs. The console has a really nice velour bag to store it in.

I'd be annoyed too if I were in your situation.

I don't know if this will help you or not, but I know I read a post in a thread about the front console where someone else with the black stitching had dyed or colored the white stitching on the console to match. You shouldn't have to do that, but perhaps it's an option.

Edit: Found the post for you--http://www.teslamotorsclub.com/showthread.php/40064-Which-Center-Console-should-I-get?p=853711&viewfull=1#post853711

  • Feb 21, 2015

Yes as annoying as that is, you can probably fix it with a careful and sparse application of shoe polish. I am lucky that the rear console tan leather won't have the same issue.

First impressions: Feels high quality, looks a perfect match, won't be especially quick to remove for those times I need 5 seats (probably 3-5 minutes and some minor contorted body positions to unsnap it from the rear seat back), reasonably stable once in position although the front will wiggle from side to side, drinks will be perfectly stable and not tip, the interior is finished nicely, it's worlds better than any aftermarket option. Overall I like it, the nice bag with the Tesla logo is a nice touch, it was packaged very Apple-like, and I'm glad I have it.

It looks like it fits right in. In a few months, I'm sure the back seat will look strange without it.

I probably will only remove it when I need both seats folded down. The few times I've had three people in the back they were not that comfortable, but everyone wanted to go in my car for some reason :)

Mine will be here Tuesday as well. I guess I don't need to post a picture, since Tan/Obeche Matte is the picture in the store, so everyone already know how it looks in that combo.

Ordered mine late evening on 2/19 and received a shipping confirmation from Tesla on 2/21. Still not showing up on Fedex as having shipped; however, the Fedex web site is saying that a Fedex Express National Service Disruption is in effect due to weather impacts on their Memphis hub. I suspect this may be creating a delay for at least some of us.

Got mine yesterday, and for those considering purchasing, I'd give it a qualified thumbs up. Looks good, well designed cup holders and storage, great match to materials in car. Unlike the front center console, however, visually it is clearly an "add-on. I was a little bummed that the first couple of people (2 children, one adult) to sit in back seat with it immediately tried to lift it up see if it folded into seat back to make the center seat available, as in most cars with a third-row console. The wigglieness and upward give of the unit confused them, since obviously it doesn't fold up, calling for me to explain. They all concluded it was a bit awkward or cheap feeling. IMHO, good product (cup holders and a little storage sorely needed back there), but not sure why Tesla can't design rear seats with a rear center console that folds into them, like so many other cars, rather than one that has to be installed and removed. Removal and installation a "thing" for me, since we are 5 in my family. In all, I have mixed feelings about it, but I think I (and my smoothie drinking offspring) will be glad we have it.

Tons of pics here already, but I guess I can post a quick review.

First... fishing that anchor to the back was not the most fun process. The tightening portion kept getting stuck on a flap of the trunk lining and getting stuck. Finally got it though, and now I know for next time. Definitely requires some trunk gymnastics. I tried to do it from the back seat with the passenger side seat folded down for trunk access, but I couldn't get it without climbing into the trunk.

It's pretty high quality. Fits in with the interior, doesn't move nearly as much as I had feared (has some play in it, but not enough to worry about it). The covered storage is nice. It works comfortably as an arm rest for a rear passenger (I sat in the back for a few minutes).

    Overall, I like it. :)

Also, bagged up it fits in the small P85D frunk just fine, which is where I'll probably store it when I have 5 people in the car.

Got mine today. Only thing I noticed is that the silver rings around the top of the cupholders are matte vs glossy like the front cupholders. But I think you have to look pretty closely to notice this. Happy with them, an arm rest that folded into the back seat would have been nicer but this solves the problem well enough for a retrofit.

Just got my premium center console and installed it.
Rather than post pictures of the front and sides of the console, which others have already done here, I'll post the rear and some comments on the installation procedure:

    IMG_7064.jpg

One thing I found somewhat painful was getting the end clip through the rear as the trunk liner splits the gap between the seat-back and seat-bottom, so I kept getting the clip to go under the trunk liner. Finally got it through by pushing down on the liner:

    IMG_7065.jpg

Unlike Jason (wk057) I didn't have too much trouble pulling the entire length of the tightening strap through from the trunk, meaning the buckle didn't get stuck in the seat gap:

    IMG_7066.jpg

The pin to which the end clip attaches sits fairly high relative to the slit in the rear liner of the center seat:

    IMG_7068.jpg

So it took a couple of tries to get the clip high enough while inside the slit to attach properly to the pin:

    IMG_7069.jpg

Pulling on the strap through the buckle to tighten the console leaves quite a bit of excess hanging:

    IMG_7070.jpg

But it wasn't too big of a deal to stuff the excess back in the gap between trunk liner and seat:

    IMG_7071.jpg

Ok here's a picture of the console itself, since no piano black ones have been posted yet - interesting to see the center seat-back wrinkled a bit after tightening the strap:

    IMG_7072.jpg

And finally a photo from the front to show both consoles in one shot:

Got my White/Carbon fiber today. The white on the rear console seems to be a bit lighter than my seat backs. I will need to see it on a sunny day to really get a good look at the color differences, but I would say that in my garage the Evannex front console seems closer in color to the seats than the Tesla rear one. Still a welcome addition to the car.

Well after 24 hours with the rear console installed and a few dozen miles driven in different conditions, I have noticed that the latch doesn't pull the console's cover down all the way, which means it rattles annoyingly when going over bumps or rough roads.

Yep, I noticed this issue as well. But the problem with mine is that the latch seems to be loose in such a way that there's a slight gap between the cover and the base of the console, so it leaves some play that causes a rattle when going over bumps or rough roads.

    Just out of curiosity.
Does the rear console fit into the front area, the open section where the yacht floor goes? Maybe with the cup holders facing towards the back?

No, it's not the right shape or size, and even if it did, there would be no way to safely secure it.

Yeah didn't look like it would. Thanks for the reply commasign.

Got mine... a few weeks ago.

No rattles... Decided to write up a post in my blog for installation and review. I like it better than the leather "cup holders" that they've been touting...

    Tan, Obeche Wood Gloss.

As many have probably seen...Grey leather is back in stock and Tesla is shipping them out quick.
I ordered mine last Thursday, and it just arrived today (Wednesday).

(Note: Grey may look a little lighter than it ACTUALLY is because I forced my camera to flash)

It was never actually out of stock. They just had an error with the grey leather when they first put them up.

Got mine a few weeks ago. As it was not available yet in Europe, I arranged for pickup in the LV store when I was there. Just had tot have it... It looks really good and I wish the front armrest was this practical!

Passengers in the rear seat and today myself found that sometimes when you lean on it, it activates the midseat seatbelt alert. Bit annoying when it goes of during the ride. Have others experienced this too (or are rear seatbelt warning systems not required/installed in the USA)

I do not have a Model S yet, but I would be surprised if they have them in the US. I would probably have read about that by now. As for required, I can tell you that is not the case. Where I drive at least, only the front seats must be buckled up (though I require everyone to buckle up before I put the car in gear).

We have installed the Black Napa/Lacewood. Looks great. As a side note - LOVE the lacewood. Wish they had not discontinued it.

Yes, I've been checking everyday for awhile now. Was hoping to have it when my car is delivered on Saturday.

Received my grey / obeche gloss rear console today. My eight-year-old son (the usual occupant of the rear seat) was extremely pleased that he has something to lean on, as well as a cupholder.

While installing, I had a "duh" moment which I will share in hopes of saving someone else from this. For about five minutes, I was convinced there were no anchors on the rear of the second-row seats to hook the tether to. After much searching, poking, and squinting, I finally found the small slit in the seatback through which you have to insert the tether buckle to hook it on the anchor. Guess I'm not used to these super-fancy cars...on my Prius the seatback anchors were plain as day. :)

My rear console broke yesterday. I went to open it and the plastic around the center hinge snapped. :( Not really sure how that happened.

I emailed Tesla the photo below and they have promised a replacement as soon as the carbon fiber decor version is back in stock. (No ETA available)

Mine did exactly the same thing. No abuse, I found the center hinge had cracked, looked exactly the same as your picture. They summarily replaced it. I only found out it was broken when I was cleaning my car otherwise it would have been a long time before I might have noticed.

Mine CF rear console broke as well in exactly the same way with very minimal use. Tesla replaced it, but had to wait as well due to back order. Let's hope the replacement will last longer.

Mine was broken right out of the box. The replacement arrived today. Must be a doozy of a design flaw for this kind of failure rate.

Found mine broken in the same place approximately two weeks ago while cleaning the car. Rarely has been used. Only opened the cover probably three or four times to show people. Tesla Ranger was out for other work and ordered a replacement. Apparently, they have been seeing a number of these break, so it's either going to need to be reinforced/redesigned or perhaps some of the early units just had a production issue.

You must be kidding? Tesla won't waste time with consoles that don't pass muster. They'll just do what they did with the front console, and decide not to bother selling the rear console any more. To hell with customer service, or promises made to customers. If Tesla can't get consoles built perfectly, that never fail, then they don't want consoles. That'll be their attitude.

Yes, I'm being facetious. On the other hand, if I were waiting for a warranty replacement of a rear console, I wouldn't bet the farm on getting one.

Why not? There were customers that got the early front consoles that had them replaced. I can't imagine that Tesla won't support their existing customer base. But sure if there's a problem and they can't fix it I could see them ceasing to sell the console.

There were literally thousands of customers waiting to buy consoles that Tesla decided they just couldn't make. If they make the same decision to stop producing the rear console, someone waiting for a warranty replacement would be out of luck if there "just aren't any more."

Just checked mine and I have the same problem. Still works fine and I never would have thought to look for the crack. Has anybody looked to see if it is fixable without replacing?

After a two month wait got my new rear console today. As an engineer, my guess is that opening the lid a bit to far puts too much stress on the plastic hinge. This is easy to do. Pushing it back against the seatback is too much. I am going to put a small flexible strap on it to limit the travel. Tesla should probably do the same. A nice console otherwise.
