nrcooled I went out and picked up some lightweight aftermarket wheels for the Model S. I am hoping to get some range/performance benefits from saving ~8lbs per corner.
Specs:
Enkei Raijin
19x8.5
+38 offset
23.1 lbs each (stock is 30.5 lbs)
I got them from tirerack.com and they provided center bore rings and lug nuts. The TPMS sensors fit on the new wheels just fine. Tirerack does not yet sell aftermarket TMPS sensors for the car yet so you will need to reuse your stock ones or buy a set directly from Tesla. I plan to use my stock wheels for winter rubber.
Here are the pics:
I don't have any driving impressions or range information since it promptly snowed after getting the wheels mounted. I have been driving an ICE SUV for the last couple of days.
Jan 26, 2013
joshuaeven Very nice!! Did you happen to get Low Rolling Resistance tires? That would make for an interesting comparison.
Jan 26, 2013
nrcooled No, I just swapped the stock tires onto the new wheels. I considered getting LRR Tires but my tires on have 700 miles on them and ditching them would just be a waste of money.
Jan 26, 2013
brianman Thanks for sharing. I'm glad we have some "explorers of aftermarket" on the forum. In 8 years, I'll probably be scouting for one or more of the aftermarket options.
Jan 27, 2013
nrcooled I have always been a big fan of the aftermarket. The OEMs are limited in some ways. Mainly, they have to please the masses and, at the same time, keep costs reasonable. The aftermarket isn't limited by those constraints and hopefully the MS will be wildly successful and will see a lot of support.
From aftermarket battery replacement options to motor replacement options, the MS community will only benefit from it.

JRP3 I wonder if range might be negatively affected by the more open, less aerodynamic profile of those rims? I guess we'll find out.
Jan 27, 2013
nrcooled I did consider this in my purchase. I think it may be offset some by the fact that, while I love flush fitting wheels (wheels which are flush with the fender), it introduces more aerodynamic drag and the wheels set well within the fender arches which directs air past the wheels. I also don't do much highway driving. My commute consists of only 1.5 miles on the highway and the remainder of my drive is done at speeds no higher than 50mph (14 mile commute). For someone that regularly travels at highway speeds more than 65mph this may have more of an impact.
Feb 3, 2013
childressmd I like these wheels. Thanks for the pics!
I've not seen a lot of detail pics of the wheels and brakes. The "TESLA" along the caliper is a nice touch, and looks great with these more open wheels. Now you just need some more aggressive looking drilled or slotted rotors.
I was scouting out wheel and tire packages at Tire Rack. I think this is the best of looking of the options, save for these O.Z. Superforgiata:
O.Z. Superforgiata Light Grey Painted
... awesome wheel, forged, unfortunate price.

I'm not sure I'm a believer in the LRR. Those might be great for the hypermiling clan, or may pay for themselves on lower mpg ICE cars and trucks. But I think I'd rather give up 6-8 mi of range if it means the difference between an emergency stop in time, and one which lands me halfway under a semi trailer.
Feb 3, 2013
jerry33 The latest generation of LRR tires have respectable stopping distance. No, they won't stop as quickly has high performance tires but they are really the same as standard tires. A few years ago this wasn't the case.
Feb 3, 2013
joshuaeven I got into a fender-bender in my Leaf yesterday. Guy pulled out into traffic in front of me (he had an obstructed view), I slammed on the brakes, and the stopping power just wasn't there. Coming from a 370z, this was a shocking experience. I don't know if was the LRR tires entirely, or just the Leaf's crappy brakes, but it was not a good feeling. I'm certain the Model S, with those Brembos and non-LRRs will handle much better.
Feb 3, 2013
jerry33 If the tires started sliding then they lacked grip. If they didn't, then it was the braking power. My guess is it was the brakes.
Feb 3, 2013
joshuaeven Wouldn't ABS prevent sliding tires?
Feb 3, 2013
jerry33 Sometimes, it depends on the friction of the road surface. But if the ABS kicks in sooner than you would expect then the tires are sliding. If you slam on the brakes and there is enough traction, then the ABS won't kick in. If the stopping distance is longer than you would like in this situation, then the brakes are weaker than the tires' traction. If the ABS kicks in then the brakes are stronger than the tires' traction.

sp4rk Ok, I have a dumb question to ask ... and I am going to sound as naive as h3ll.
I thought when can owners changed "wheels" for the Winter, they changed their tires, not "wheels"?
For a different tread pattern? Something more able to handle snow and / or ice?
But what you tell us here, Nikoli, is that you're changing your wheels for winter? How does that help?
Are there certain tyres that'll only go on certain wheels? Aside from the obvious measurements?
And while we're on the subject I read here that 19" are better for winter than 21". I've always taken this at face value. Why?
Feb 3, 2013
brianman Some people get one set of wheels and change the tires on those wheels in reaction to weather / season changes.
Some people get multiple sets of wheels and swap the wheels in reaction to weather / season changes.
As I understand it...
You risk damage to the tires every time they are mounted. You also risk damage to the tires of they're are left to sit unmounted.
Finally, for some wheel sizes (like the 21" Model S wheels) there is no (or very little) selection w/r/t winter tires. Consequently, those interested in getting winter tires while having 21" wheels necessarily have to get an additional set of 19" wheels to accomplish this.
Hope this helps.
Feb 3, 2013
sp4rk Helped! Thanks.
So road traction has nothing to do with wheels (assuming toeing and all other alignment issues are in check); it's a matter of changing wheels/tyres instead of just tyres due to reasons you mentioned.
Feb 3, 2013
UMD86 I plan to buy a set of 19's (Rim & Tires) for the winter season and store them in my basement. I'm thinking about buying a 3.5T jack and install them myself.
Feb 3, 2013
pete8314 Those are beautiful wheels...first aftermarkets that I've preferred to the factory options. As you say, that price is way steep though.
- - - Updated - - -
Those are nice too, much better price! If you ever love them so much that you don't want to take them off for the summer, I'll buy your 21" greys

Feb 3, 2013
100thMonkey our S is coming with the performance wheels. we are thinking of swapping out to maybe the 19" turbine ones in the other thread, though these look great too. any idea how to tell if an aftermarket tire can really handle the stress of all that torque? I mean not all wheels are created to such high performance right? it would really suck to find out the hard way when the wheel fails... any feedback would be helpful.
Feb 4, 2013
Nikoli Thread was about wheels, different tires were implied. These have the same Pirelli winter tires that Tesla provides on their 19" winter package. The stock 21" will go back on in spring.
Regarding handling the stress of the torque. O.Z. are quality wheels so they should be fine, but I'll be going easy on them. No stoplight drag races or hard cornering. The winter tires aren't meant for performance anyway.
- - - Updated - - -
Changing them out is very easy. The lift points are clearly marked and a 3.5 ton will be plenty. I use a 2.5 ton and it has no trouble lifting each corner. Make sure you have a good torque wrench.
Feb 4, 2013
jerry33 Ideally you have a set of winter wheels with winter tires mounted and a set of summer wheels with summer tires mounted. The reasons for the two sets of wheels is that, even if the winter tires are the same size as the summer tires each time you mount and demount a tire you risk damaging it. Also it's much more convenient because it's far quicker to just mount a set of wheels than it is to change the tires on a wheel and rebalance them.
Besides the tread pattern, summer tires don't work well in cold conditions because the tread compound hardens. Winter tires have a tread compound that remains flexible in cold weather.
No.
The 19" tires have a higher sidewall that allows them to conform to the road surface better. In addition, assuming a Model S here, the tread width is narrower on the 19" tire than it is on the 21" tire (the nominal section width of both tires are the same but the tread width is not). This makes for a longer narrower contact patch. In winter conditions you want long and narrow rather than short and wide.

childressmd Sweet! I've got Grey coming, and those grey wheels look good!
I have Superleggeras on my S6, which is a similar design. The problem is scrubbing... all... those... spokes...
- - - Updated - - -
Not only that, but that's 2 trips a year to Discount Tire, with dirty tires tires in your back seat, because 4 of them are not going to fit in the trunk. They don't mount and balance tires for free, either. So it's $30-40 each time, plus the 90 min+ while you wait there. And if they don't scratch one of your wheels this time, they will next time. It's hard to get them on and off.

mnx Was doing some research this morning into lightweight 19" wheels. I'm thinking about a set of Forgestar CF5v for my summer wheels (19x8.5 in matte black) if I can sell my grey 21's. (Don't have the car yet, but I'll likely make a post my 21's in the for sale section after I have it).
Forgestar CF5v: Forgestar CF5V Wheels BMW 19"

Feb 7, 2013
artsci Do they have the right bolt pattern? I don't think BMW wheels do.

mnx They are 400$ each, $1600 for 4... A set of 4 O.Z. Superforgiata (17lbs each) are $5,564.00... It's all relative but that was my basis for comparison. I guess they are considerably more expensive than the stock Tesla 19" rims, however they are less than the Tesla 21's.
Feb 13, 2013
Mayhemm Are you sure about that? The link you provided in post 25 seems to list them as being $1559.95 each.

blaz Wow, thanks for the pics mnx, I've just fallen in love with those wheels. I'm seriously considering swapping the stock 19" wheels with those when I get my car in a few weeks.
I've never had my wheels changed before, so I have no idea how I would go about this. Can I just buy those wheels and then bring them along with the car to some car shop to have them installed using my existing stock tires? Would they set up the TPMS sensors and all that stuff for me? I'm wondering if there are any gotchas for an aftermarket newbie like me.

Feb 25, 2013
imprezive Basically yes that's how it works. If you order from a place like Tirerack they can even drop ship the wheels directly to a shop for you. I'd recommend finding a good local tire shop since you have TPMS and a good sized wheel to deal with. A shop with a Hunter Road Force Balancer is a good place to start.
Mar 1, 2013
fluxemag On my current car I had the wheels and tires shipped from Tire Rack to the Sears by my house and they did the TPMS swap and tire install/balance for $20 per corner. I plan to do the same when my MS gets here (and unless I see a better option I'm copying you MNX). I have the white with glass roof on order and I think those black wheels look perfect. It helps to hide the size of the tires, which bothers me after seeing the 21" wheels. Not a bad price for them either! I'm sure someone back East might be interested in my stock 19's as well.

May 7, 2013
mnx I weighed one on the bathroom scale, came out to 19.8lbs (which is what they say on the modbargains.com website).
I went with a +38 offset. I'll be mounting the OEM goodyears for now, I figured I'd start with inexpensive tires see what kind of tire life I get and then move on to something better later. My next set will either be Bridgestone Potenza's s-04 Pole Position or Michelin Pilot Super Sports.

4sevens.com Pictures when you get them on! The spoke design makes the 19's look better.(bigger)
where'd you get the tpms for them?
Tire size?

May 7, 2013
mnx Pics to come of course.
I'm getting the TPMS from Tesla this Friday when they install them (although it appears that we may be able to get them elsewhere soon as per other threads...)
My other set of 19x8.5's are wearing 255/45/R19, but these will have the OEM goodyear 245/45/R19.
These came without wheel nuts and I wasn't asked to specify anything. I'm hoping that either the stock nuts or the Gorilla nuts that are holding my Enkei Rajin's on will work.

4sevens.com Actually 255/40/19 275/40/19 have very close diameters to the stock 19 in fact the tire diameter for 275/40/19 has the same diameter as 245/45/19.

4sevens.com LOL GT-R crowd. Bright green wheels? All show, no go...
These CF5V are actually very light for 19in wheels. They have ratings on their wheels (on par with forged wheels) and they're made in the usa.... (which you can't say for most ricey wheel importers out there).
I'm sure structurally these wheels are fine. What people are complaining about in that thread is the finish and customer service.
They can pay 3-4 times more for a forged rim from volk/bbs/hre but these wheels are great bang for the buck.... and because of the spoke design they will look bigger than 19's

May 9, 2013
4sevens.com I was mainly referring to the wheels as "all go." There are plenty of people who turn high performance cars into more of a show car rather than really using them for what they're designed for at the trackThe car can be "all go" but it's the driver's and their taste and overemphasis in how the car looks that makes it "all show" LOL

May 14, 2013
jerry33 Usually when that much weight is required the tires are not seated properly. The guide rib should be even all around.
To properly seat a tire:
1. Lubricate the tire bead area and the rim surface with passenger tire lubricant.
2. Inflate slowly until the bead pops over the safety ledges. Don't exceed 40 psi for this. If the beads don't go over the safety ledges try lubricating again. In the worst case the safety ledge may have to be machined a bit.
3. Deflate the tire to zero.
4. Inflate the tire to the maximum pressure on the sidewall.
5. Reduce the pressure to the operating pressure.
6. Check the guide rib.

May 23, 2013

(i could be wrong, but that is my understanding) Try pm'ing jerry33 or nrcooled, either of those guys should know if you don't get a confirmation on this thread.
May 23, 2013
nrcooled A 20x9 +35 should fit fine in the wheel wells. Stick with a 245/40-20 to stay on the safe side. Ultimately, you will have plenty of room to fit them and retain full functionality with no rubbing.
I will be moving to a much more aggressive setup in the next year so I can be the guinea pig for all those looking for fitment info.
May 23, 2013
fluxemag Install scheduled for Tuesday morning. I went with 20x9", 35 offset. The load rating of the tires is important though since this is a heavy car. Load rating has to be XL, and still needs to be double checked. 245/40/20 are waaaaay cheaper than 255/40/20, for whatever reason. This was all based on a discussion with a tire tech at Tirerack.

Jeroens Looks great!
did they install centering rings? What was the bore?
which tires did you end up with.
standard tesla tires are rated (only) Y, so strange....

Mark Petersen Hi fluxemag
Can you please post some more photo,
This is the exsact same wheels I'm planing to get
Also what is the ride comfort in relation to the 21"

americanracer I'd strongly recommend validating that the wheels are load rated appropriately. Existing designs that are simply drilled to 5x120 likely are not load rated properly for the weight of the Model S.

Congrats! Curious to see pics when you get them. What color is your ms? I'm considering the same wheel on my grey MS. I'm not a wheel expert so don't know all these specs. Do you know if the stock good years will fit in that same staggered configuration or do you need to have different size tires front and rear? I'm just trying to figure out if I should wait to order the wheel with new tires or if I can get them now and use my good years. I only have 5k miles. Thx! Keith

Dr.Ling Reviving this to get some more pics! I want to see more 20"s. 22"s is NOT an option for me
So to whoever posted in this thread before, you have to show us how your wheel choice turned out.

TylerCA How much does the factory 21"s weigh? And any actual data from members on how unsprung weight actually affects or improve range?
Sep 18, 2013
mnx 35-36lbs for the factory 21" wheels.
The weight of the wheels will make zero difference to highway (steady state) driving where range matters the most. Aero is far more important in that case.
Sep 18, 2013
lloyds mnx is that w/ or w/o tires? I've never weighed them, so curious. I'm looking @ going aftermarket. Possibly with HREs, but interested to hear if lighter wheels can really get a better range.
Sep 18, 2013
drees That's just the wheels. The 21" Conti ExtremeContact DWs weigh 26lbs each according to tirerack.

balefire Any updates with this fitment?
Any pics?
Thanks!

jthompson Love the pics you all are sharing and your ideas and the stats on the wheels - thank you!!! Someday when I grow up I'll mod my Model S!!

jthompson mnx: Love your wheels! eh?
Sep 27, 2013
mnx Yeah they're great. Kinda wish I went wider in the rear for a staggered setup or 19x9 all around so I could have fit 265 tires on all 4 corners though.
When I got my car there was no p85+ staggered setup and I was trying to stay somewhat stock. Also wheel fitment info was pretty scarce....
Sep 27, 2013
balefire I'm hoping the 19x9.5 fit that 4seven ordered in May because those are "deep" concave... The 19x9 and 19x8.5 fitment is not deep concave.

nrcooled Bumping this thread since my aggressive setup is in. Just as a teaser (and I'll give more details when everthing is on) my setup is as follows:
19x9 +15 front on 245/35-19
19x10.5 +25 rear on 265/35-19
I've got the wheels but I am waiting on the tires and TPMS (which will be here this Thrusday). The wheels are FLUSH with the fenders so the fitment is a bit tricky and the rear wheels completely fill the rear wheel well. I may need to get a 5mm spacer for the rear as the rear wheel sits about 15 mm from the inner fender.
Test fitment with wheels/tires will be done this weekend if everything works out with shipping and my trusted installer. Then it's up to the Tesla SC to get the TPMS programmed. I will get pics up as soon as everything is on a fitted correctly.
BTW - Tirerack sells the TPMS sensors @ $97 each

Zextraterrestrial why are you only going with 265? Especially on 11.5"!
I have 275 on 9.5" and I 'd go with 305mm on a 10" if/when I change
and why not wider fronts?
thanks
what tires are you going to run?
Oct 7, 2013
Dreamin 11.5?
Those aren't Tesla offsets
That tire is 2" shorter than the factory tire.
Oct 7, 2013
Zextraterrestrial I have 275/30 series on a 19" rear for AutoX. I raced against a P85 with the 21" 245 Conti's and tied on the drag strip(well, won due to .07s better RT)..

nrcooled The 265 tire is to give space in the rear since the 10.5 width only gives me about 10mm of clearance between the lip of the wheel and the inner fender. The pyramid effect of the 265 on an 10.5 wide wheel will give me extra clearance. I am worried more about the camber addition when the car lowers itself at speed. This is all test fitting so I am hoping it works out.
The fronts I stuck with 9" wide wheels due to the fact that the sizing and offset offered by the manufactured was limited. So I went with the wheel that would give me the look that I was going for. Plus the whole measuring of the wheelwell prior to ordering was nerve racking. Will I get the measurements wrong? Will I not account for caliper clearance properly? Hub spacing? etc.
The tires I chose are Bridgestone S-04 Pole Position.
See above fitment concerns. If I was going with a skinnier wheel (10 or 10.5) I would go with a larger cross-section for the tire but since the wheel is so wide I have to compromise on the overall cross-section of the tire.
Things that I have learned from my inspection of the car. 1. Tesla rolls our fenders for us. There is no "lip" sticking out on the inside of the fenders on the car. 2. The distance on the inner fender to the motor isn't that big but there is plenty of space to the suspension components to add a very wide rear wheel.
Things that I need to learn (cue up lolachamp) 1. how much the camber changes when the car is in the low setting (this will effect the clearance to the inner fender 2. will lowering the car using adjustable links dial in more camber or cause more fitment problems.
Oct 7, 2013
Zextraterrestrial the camber specs are in the manual in the cars touchscreen now as well as the offsets
there are specs for lowered and standard positions too. (if my memory is correct, it is Monday, I think :tongue

nrcooled This falls into the RTFM category for me
I should have just looked in the manual for it but I was dead set in assuming that it wouldn't be there. Thanks for the info!

Dreamin You cannot safely mount a 265 tire on an 11.5" wheel.
Bridgestone S-04 Spec:

The smallest tire you can safely mount on an 11.5" wheel is a 305/30/19
