Speculation about the Opportunity Console part 1

Many who aren't going would love to give input. Maybe we could see what they are proposing? Tesla could post some pictures here....

P.S. Idea - make this thread a temporary sticky to keep it top of the list?

Please make a modular dock area in the console for iPhones/iPods and other phones or mp3 players. This would somehow hopefully directly connect to the Model S without needing BT to play music. Tesla could sell drop-in docks that fit various popular models. Others could connect via aux cable. Thanks!

more USB ports 10w-15w or more to support devices like iPad charging.
110vac port 85w or so to support laptop recharging
phone/iphone cradle/dock (exchangeable for the phone) so it does not fall and can be charged/used.
Place to put laptop/ipad while it charges, vertical slot (potential closeable to hide)

    Lockable section for wallet, etc.
    More cup holders (bigger)
    Place for food.
    Place for change/tokens

I love the idea of this console. The empty space there has been the only thing that I really haven't been excited about.

I think one would have to think about what is useful in this area, what is practical for the automobile, and what doesn't detract from the overall style of the car.

In my opinion, I don't think this has to be much to really be useful.

I like the idea of at least one compartment for a variety of items: chargers, wallets, small purse, keys. Another compartment would be close to where the existing cigarette lighters and USB ports are for hiding said devices that are charging or "permanently" plugged in such as a USB stick for music or hard drive. I don't know how practical laptop charging would be, but perhaps it would be nice to have a port through which a charging wire would exit the compartment and could be plugged into a device outside the compartment.

I was thinking something like this (more elevated, less elevated...):

    Pop-out cupholders

Cupholders won't be an issue for me since I'm not allowing anyone with a beverage into my Model S!!

Seriously, for those that occasionally want the option of cupholders, particularly for passengers in the rear, but don't want to impact the clean uncluttered look at most other times, pop-out cupholders would be ideal.

Uh oh, this thread is going to turn into an episode of "Pimp My Ride"! I need a blender in my console.

The Plus: Kudos to Tesla for listening and responding to their customers. What other car company would do this?

The Minus: If I spring for this the car will cost even more! (Gulp) Don't tell my wife...

I'm putting a vinyl (record) player in mine
it should fit nicely since I don't have a cell phone anymore
    maybe an 8track too

seriously though, all of the things I carry are too big for a small spot and too small for a big spot and will fit perfectly in the car, as is

If I were getting an S (but no, have to wait for an X), I'd like a couple cupholders & a few compartments that close - a large one for a purse and some smaller ones for organizing other *things*. A phone tray. It will be interesting to see the different console concepts on Saturday (Thanks Jason S for inviting me along!). Seeing the consoles will help me better verbalize what works.

And love the tag 'opportunity console'. Brilliant naming.

It is strange that the forum is here and not on the Tesla web site, but they probably had reasons for that.

I would like for the opportunity console to have storage space with electric outlet. The main thing for this storage is to have a sliding cover, so I can close the cover and nobody would see my mess.
If the inside of the storage can have additional bottle holders, it would be great. For example I would keep 3-4 water bottles there, while having a coffee in the cup holder. During the trip I can always go in the storage console and pull out a bottle.
Another thought is to have a garbage bucket there. Everybody has trash in the car, where do you put it? If the opportunity console had a trash bucket, i would open it throw my McDonalds bag or empty bottle in there, and close it - no mess! When arrived home, I can empty the trash.

I think you may be semi-joking, but I had a 2001 Lexus LS430 with the executive package. It had a "cool" box between the rear seats. I LOVED that!!! I usually kept a few waters in there and it was one of my favorite features.

One option I was thinking about (and it doesn't necessarily need to be in the center console, but it can be)... How about a 110/120V outlet? I realize that would be impractical for many reasons, but it occurred to me that it could come in handy in many admittedly unusual situations. But in reality, I know that will never happen, so I withdraw that request... but perhaps in a later model?

But I want to +1 for lots of cup holders. Also a sun glasses case please. Perhaps a little locked compartment to keep change for tolls.
  • Jun 19, 2012

The most important thing is that my beverage be easily accessible. The current cup holders are a joke - if you use the armrest, the cup would be behind your wrist. Try reaching for that 15 times an hour.

I've been thinking about this idea, and it is growing on me. A trash bin that takes small bags. Something that is easy empty and reload. I'm thinking something like a Diaper Dekor. It has an endless trash bag (you tie a knot on the bottom) and when you open the door to empty it, it has a cutter on the door. Really slick design. A little trash compartment with that design would be amazing in a car.

This video shows what I am talking about. Starts at 0:30
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svmm9lr14zo

This would leave a lot of room up front, because this bin should be towards the back of the opportunity console so that the kids in the back seat can reach.

Also, can someone comment on how ventilation gets to the back... because that should be built into the console if not provided for already by floor vents or something.

How about a shelf that extends from the bottom of the screen to just in front of the cup holders. About 4 inches thick with a sliding cover on top. This way we can have a place for a phone or other USB connected device all nicely hidden AND still leave the room underneath for larger items such as a purse. It should be covered on top with the same material as the dash.

I've been holding onto this idea for a rainy day, but since you asked. Here's my concept.

I thought it would be cool to have a Tesla accessory that equates to the iPod. A Tesla product that fills this gap: iMac is to the Model S as iPod is to the "______". The product would be complimentary to the Model S but can also be used independently and somehow tie in the cool electric DNA of Telsa.

Here's my take on this product. Take one of the lithium ion cells that are in the battery packs and case it in a machined, ergonomic, styled case. On the end caps your have ports for power out (charge any device), high power flash light (for emergencies) maybe cram in other functionality like a speaker, voice recorder, flash drive, etc. Now have a dock in the Opportunity Console that keeps the "Teslapod" charged. Make a double battery version that has 2x power and room for more functionality.

All the Tesla fans like myself who can't afford the Model S can be a part of it by getting a Teslapod. Yeh, it won't be docked in my awesome Model S but I can charge it, use all it's features, show off the Telsa branding, and share my Telsa enthusiasm on the poor mans budget.

    Anyone digit?

    No cost standard feature change:
Replace the current cup holders with a rectangular cubby hole of approximately the same length and width-- should be a simple remold of the plastic form. Move cupholders to the opportunity space. The current cup holders are not useable at the same time as the arm rests and a modicum of closed storage within reach of the driver is expected on any car without charge. A couple of standard feature cup holders in the opportunity space still leaves plenty of open space for purse / man purse or for additional for cost options.

    For cost options:
    +1 wastebasket cubby
+1 larger closed storage for those willing to trade off open space
+1 closed storage cubby with USB (this would be a nice no charge standard feature too)
  • Jun 19, 2012
    Jason S
Quick summary so far of the common points:

Front section should have a dock for the items we'd plug into the USB. The standard edition has the USB under/near the screen, so that fits nicely. A little something there with padded sides so folks can bump their legs up against it. If it had a lockable cover, I think that would fit some needs for locking space. If the lockable cover was a combo lock, I think that would be ok.

Middle section is where people start to differ quite a bit. Suggestions of everything from garbage cans to inductive heating/cooling chambers. Or both. Plus cupholders. Or just leave blank so I can put my bag there. I want the pop-out cupholders Larry Chanin mentioned as the insulated lid to the inductive heating/cooling chamber below. If I don't want something hot/cold, I'll just pop out the lid (into the frunk with it!) and that'll be a nice spot for my bag/backpack/man purse.

Last section, which bumps up against the existing armrest thing with round holes in it (I dare not call them cupholders -- I think those round holes are for loose change?)... a large middle section could integrate into the armrest. It depends a lot on people's desires with the middle section.

Folks have also asked for 110vac ports. While I don't think this is an easy addon, it has been asked for so duley noted.

clmason mentioned a special accessory thingy... I suppose could be the powered picnic basket kind of thing others described and it integrates into the floor via a socket. Can cover the socket for the non-premium center piece and can have a 110vac adaptor on it as well as a 110vac (or whatever is good for the local user; Euro plugs, etc) way of using the picnic basket away from the car.

Now I just need to find a Yogi Bear meme thing... here is one from the motion picture (what?! there was a movie?)... YogiBear_01[5].jpg

I generally don't like too much clutter in my car and was OK with the negative space. BUT, with the option of an opportunity console, I'd like to be able to have an enclosed space where I can store some stuff. Namely, I have to "hide" my toll transponder when I'm in some toll lanes because EVs and hybrids drive for free, but if it's exposed it will automatically charge me. Also, as others have stated, I'd like to keep a sunglasses case and some change in the console that isn't exposed when the car is parked.
  • Jun 19, 2012
    spatterso911
+1 on your suggestions. The change pocket may or may not be sectioned for different coin denominations. Enclosed space large enough for parking passes, cards, transponders, badges. The rest can be a longer enclosed deep space to hide stuff, iPod, extra keys, receipts, integrate a third cup holder for those who "Go Large" at drive throughs.
  • Jun 19, 2012
    AndyM
I would certainly like a place beyond the glove compartment to store mints, spare change, sunglasses, etc. that needs to be closer to reach than the glove compartment.

I also think having a safe place to store a mobile phone and charge it while driving is a must. Either in a safe, closed compartment that has a charge outlet inside it, or a mount with a charger would be OK. And not on the dashboard (like some other mfrs)... heats up too quickly in sunlight.

I don't care for the floor-mounted compartments... they will only attract dirt into hard-to-clean areas. But, maybe something mounted just in front of the cup holders would be OK.

I would like some easy hidden way to store/charge my iPhone.
I would really like a deeper, removable cupholder for my morning coffee.
I would need something to hold my little things I do not like in my pocket while driving, like my wallet and my work badge.

Something to hide items would be really nice too, and +1 if it can lock to keep my kids out (ie. money!)

Tesla may provide a modular system which clips together from a selection of molded plastic units. I would imagine that offering these units in every combination of CF, Lacewood, etc plus appropriately matching leather trim might be too costly for some.

A big issue with the console is going to be keeping it clean from the inevitable spills and scuffs and scratches which will build up over time and in this respect, a modular system is ideal.

Scruffy console? Simply buy a new top facia and swap it with the old one. Also, will the same idea of opportunity consoles and footlockers storage bins etc etc be extended on Model X?
  • Jun 20, 2012
    brianman
Since Tesla is listening, perhaps they'll take note...

My biggest concern with the "console options" is that it will be easily removable -- perhaps with a screwdriver/wrench, but removable nonetheless. As such, no matter what option is offered in this category there's no "lockbox" type location to put items like a GPS or radar detector. The frunk is the only alternative but that's a very inconvenient place to store such items.

My cheap sunglasses, paper and pencil -- I don't care if they're easily seen or stolen. High tech gadgets are a different matter.

The words Opportunity Console bring up images of an over design.

I like Tesla's 'less is more' mentality, but something is needed. A small compartment that keeps the necessary clutter out of sight, yet is quickly accessible.

And keeps the 'less is more' look.

Perhaps a slightly larger armrest with storage space. Keep it simple.

I asked George in NY why the sliding armrests didn't flip up to reveal storage in that massive "box". He mentioned something about the wiring, but I still think they can make a little cubby hole under there.

Iirc he said these would not be "tacked on", but rather factory options that you would go to a service center to have installed.

    Opportunity Console

The current console is not workable for a number of reasons: First, if I use the cup holder, i need to contort my arm backwards to pick up the cup...very unergonomic. Second, if I am using the cup holder and also want to rest my elbow, I again need to put my elbow too far back for comfort. The 'elbow rest' should be in a naturally comfortable position for all size drivers and the cup holder should be forward of the arm rest. I am 5' 10" and don't want to have to pull my seat sufficiently far back and likewise the steering wheel to overcome this flaw.

I love the rest of the car...but this negative is something I would experience every time I enter the car...i.e. it's not a sometimes thing.

If the Opportunity Console addresses this issue, it would be a huge plus...and it should be part of the standard equipment of the car. I have a reservation in for a $100K version and should not have to experience a $ hit just to get what should be there in the first place.

    Hope these thoughts are useful.

Agreed. I'm just waiting til the options are presented. No offense, but some of the ideas posited here are "outlandish". It would shock me if the actual options are very far outside of the typical design you'd see in between seats in most cars today.

I'm going to predict that this thread will be re-titled "What you wish the Console could be". And a new thread will be created for "Feedback on the actual Console options" just so they can really sift through the feedback. :)

Yeah. +1 As opposed to looking at this as an opportunity to get exactly what you want instead of something built in that doesn't meet your needs, there is mostly "why didn't they know exactly what I want." This is their first sedan and they chose to go with a "blank slate." In another couple years for Model S.2 there will probably be more generic "pre-designed." They don't have a vast amount of car design history.
  • Jun 20, 2012
    doug
When they do show it, we'll move all this speculation to another thread.
  • Jun 20, 2012
    Odenator
I don't see why this would be a problem. Many auto makers are able to provide a center arm rest with storage, rear vents AND rear pop-out cup holders all in the same space as the massive center box of the Model S. My '98 Outback could do this. It makes no sense that Tesla's designers couldn't design something similar.

I understand Tesla wanting to create a minimalist design interior to highlight the difference between an EV and an ICE car but this is just basic stuff. If they had just made the the top elbow rest flip open to cover a small storage space and replaced the current cup holders with pop-out holders that suspended drinks over the mid console in much more ergonomic way then much of the griping regarding this topic would have been avoided.

The only thing now left is to find a place to put my iPhone that doesn't involve throwing it on the floor like some rep told me at Bellvue.

As an option, how about going to a briefcase manufacturer like Tumi and having a case made in matching leather with a metal clips on bottom to secure to center.
Have a button on the touch screen to clip or unclip.
You could carry it with you or put in frunk for security.
Even if you leave it in car it could not be removed without unclip button.

Starting with the rear of the console space and going forward:

    * Two cup holders (the cup holders on the arm rest are very awkward to use)
    * Change box side by side with deeper well for eye glasses, pens, etc.
    * Larger space for cell phones, electronic gadgets etc. with connection ports
*If there's still room, one last large space for gloves, purse, misc. gear.

Ideally, all of these storage compartments would be enclosed by individual flip lids in your chosen interior trim.
    Please baby please.

KevJo1 brings up a good point...

If the consoles are after-delivery (for "early" Sigs), I wonder if they'll be able to color match the white leather (or if supplies will dry up). Might be another reason to go with the black leather interior.

Edit: "Another" was open-ended. Primary three reasons I'm avoiding the white are (1) difficult to keep clean/new (including the blue jeans concern), (2) interior brightness overload, and (3) I really like the red piping on the black interior.

I had an idea like this that was inspired by my motorcycle. The BMW has removable lockable paneers. This would be an advantage to Tesla due to the limited glove box and storage. Being removable allows you to take it with you like a suitcase, or as above a briefcase. See photos below.

At a minimum, Tesla should install some mount points into the floor. I've owned several minivans and SUVs which were configurable - with mount points in the floor where seats or a console could be mounted or removed. This would allow them to manufacture cars now without consoles - and then securely add the console later - and provide flexibility so that other consoles (perhaps by 3rd parties) could also be installed during the life of the car.

While I don't store a lot of stuff in my current LS - there are large pockets in the doors and two storage compartments in the center console - which I do use for some items. Plus there's a built-in sunglasses holder mounted in the ceiling above the rear view mirror.

Would be nice to have an option to add a center console with more concealed storage, larger (and more convenient) cup holders, and a place to hold one or two cell phones (connected to USB or accessory outlet).

You can still get 64 oz., you'll just need 4 cup holders to carry it all. ;)

See Europeans... this is why we need so many cup holders in our cars! ;)

The 7-series BMWs have had a version of this in the center console since 2002. It basically forces the AC into the center console, but its nice for keeping drinks cool.
They also have little push-to-pop-out drawers, door compartments to hold things like umbrellas, gloves, or whatever, and pop-out rear seat cupholders mounted into the seats, which are VERY nice.

I'd love to have multiple USB and 12V ports, but just remember that any additional electrical outlets/plug-in components will add to the drain on the battery.

I'm interested to see what kinds of console options will appear in the coming days. Functional interior space with easy access for holding gadgets and whatnot should have been a no-brainer.

Refrigerated compartments, heated drinks, chilled drinks...

What the heck? Planning to be a roving barista?

"And in here I have a microwave. In the frunk, I've put small convection oven to make fresh pastries. And in the back, that's the real prize, a full bar complete with 3 beers on tap."

I consider it very important to have a place for small items in a car. Also I need to have a place to put documents which I collect while on a trip. For tax purposes, I need to keep records of all expenses. Currently I use a clip (as in a clipboard) to hold all those little receipts.

How about an umbrella in the doors, like some british cars have?

Or am I getting carried away here?

Well, in the future, we can have the Mr. Fusion to process the waste into extra GWhrs...

You know why they call them "cell" phones? It's because owning one is like being in prison.

(That lame old explanation about radio cells is of course fiction.)

I thought it was because you have to "sell" yours about every year or two in order to keep it compatible.

Sounds like you need a BusinessTrip.app for your Infotainment screen! Something you can click to start and stop your drive logs perhaps?

Can Tesla make the space outline more clear? Is there a drawing, or set of pictures? Could Tesla release a 3D diagram of the space, which could be imported into Blender or commercial 3D tools (Inventor, etc) and allow us to draw up what we are thinking?

Priceless. We're at six pages of conversation before we've even seen the consoles that this thread was created for.

    :)

I guess it's talk on speculation, quiet on facts. (Maybe this belongs in the investor's thread:biggrin:)

Once we have console options to discuss, the mods will split that off into a new thread. I just found it funny that we'd filled six pages before even seeing what we were discussing.

There's no question about the propensity to speculate, but Tesla did ask for input without showing anything till this weekend.

Yes they did. :) They asked for a drink of water, we brought the fire hose.

Here's an update I just received from my Tesla rep:

OK, so that didn't provide any additional information.
