So, has anyone named their cars yet? I named my BYO Model S Katniss, in honor if a certain young adult novel-turned movie.

I wanna hear some good ones, folks.

I have named my beater/commuter bicycle "Rocinante" but I have never named a car and had it stick. I plan on naming my Model S not sure what I am going to use as of yet.

Is it time to start a 'Pet Names for the Model S' thread? It would be similar to Pet Names for the Roadster.

edit: Yes, it was time. :)

    I'm a bit of a video gamer. :)

I've never had a pet name for a car. Those I know that did, usually it's a rebuilt classic or something sort of run down and it's a humorous name. I've wracked my brain, but it's just "my car". I have a similarly hard time thinking of a custom license number.

Maybe someone will end up naming it for me.
  • Mar 29, 2012
    Doug_G
I've been calling my Roadster "Tessie", mainly because my wife groaned loudly the first time I said it. So I told her I was going to call the Model S "Essie". More groans. She's demanded naming rights, though, and wants to call it "Nikkie" (after Nicola Tesla of course).
  • Mar 29, 2012
    gg_got_a_tesla
I'm with ckessel on this one. Might sound silly but, naming a car makes it rather personal for me; it'd be that much harder to part with it eventually and any little dent/chip etc. let alone any major mishap will hurt that much more :(

It'll indeed just be "my electric car".

I like it, but then it would eat you. That would be bad.

I have a 96 Pathfinder that is known as The Bucket, short for Rust Bucket. My son took it to college so we replaced it with The SOB (Son of Bucket). In each case, the car has picked its own name. Someone says it and it sticks.

I had always had pet names for my cars. It shocked me when I discovered shortly after meeting my wife that she had done the same. I guess it was a perfect match. For some reason cars have always been female and trucks/SUV's male. Currently we have:

    Winston
    Thumper AKA Orca
    And Freya

I swore I'd never name a car, but time on this forum resulted in naming my Roadster "Baby Turtle". And you'll have to take a walk back in time to figure that one out. :)

Since most ships are referred to as female and as an extension, most cars are referred to as "she" (with the exception of KITT); my Model S is named Charlene.

Like I said earlier, will not be naming the car but, will call the touchscreen console "HAL" (so, "play Metallica, HAL" or "set temperature to 70 degrees, HAL") to pay homage to my University of Illinois roots! No 'malfunctions', I hope.

I will be calling my Model X the "X-wing Falcon" (Star Wars Reference of course)

Half X-Wing fighter, Half millennium falcon.

It makes sense with the falcon doors & because it will be the fastest ship in the sector.
  • Apr 16, 2012

Upon further reflection, if I do get a Model S and name it Katniss, I gotta get a black roof so I can get a Mockingjay painted up top.

How 'bout "S-Car", Scar for short? ;)
  • May 8, 2012

Some friends of my wife and I name all their cars. The mini-van is "Rommy" (TV show Andromeda), the sedan is "Marshall", etc... So we asked their advice.

Two options came up for the Red Perf Sig: Rowan (means fire or similar apparently) and Nikki. Turns out we know somebody named Rowen, so that one was tossed and the name that stuck was Nikki. For Nicola and for "Nikki Heat" who comes from the TV show "Castle".

So far the Nikki name seems to be sticking.
  • May 8, 2012

After today's shocking event in Sugar Land, TX, I think Rowan may not be a wise idea...

you don't want do that if your first name is Dave, would you? 'caus we all know the answer.
  • May 9, 2012
    dsm363
I think it would be cool for someone to develop an app that the user could set that would have the car respond a certain percentage of the time "Dave, I'm afraid I can't allow you do to that" when you tried to adjust the radio or air conditioning. Would be funny for passengers in the car at least.

BTW... naming the car is important if you're into feng shui I guess: Do you have good 'feng shui' energy in your car?

  • May 11, 2012
    ferrarimanf355
I think he may be referring to Rowan Atkinson, the British comedian behind Blackadder and Mr. Bean.

He also owns a McLaren F1 and owns the fastest Top Gear Star in a Reasonably Priced Car time in the Kia. Faster than Tom Cruise.
  • May 11, 2012
    Jason S
<3 Rowan Atkinson, but it is actually the son of somebody I know who is named Rowen/Rowan... I'm not sure of the spelling.

I'm not entirely comfortable with naming the car 'Nikki' but for now it works until a better name comes along. It may be one of those things where I'll name the car after I get to know it better.

Tho I don't know how good a name OMGBESTCAREVER is going to be...

Beast makes me think of something loud and probably smelly, like an ICE :)

I like the Joules spatters mentioned, that's quite clever. If I were to name it I'd want something associated with quiet/silence/stealth or with energy.

I put this on the noise maker thread. But after a snarky comment towards my dad this weekend "S.B.D" is the front runner for the name of my Model S. It is for "silent but deadly". I made a comment about running him down in his parking garage, after he revved his engine at me as I was walking to meet him.

As far as car pet names go, I've only owned one car long enough to care about it. I have a penchant for the classic Transformers, so I tried making Autobot names of my own. My beloved '99 Chrysler Cirrus was named Treadbare, and I'm selling it (cheap) to a 16-year-old who promises to love it and honorably keep the name. As for my Model S, the fundamental problem with keeping name patterns of Autobots related to esoteric car terms (Wheeljack, Ratchet, Camshaft, etc) and naming an electric car is that there aren't a plethora of electric car parts from which to choose a name. Right now, I can think of "Frunk," Pano," and maybe "Supercharger."
    Other names that might work:
Inductor (as in Linear Inductance Motor)
Pneumatrix, Pneumatron, Pneumatross (in reference to the pneumatic suspension)
Discharge (as in electrostatic discharge, but it is a horrid name)
    Regenix (regenerative braking system)

I'm not moved by any of these names, however.

Since 1999, my vehicles have all had names based on characters in the movie Matrix. So far, their names have been:

    2000 Honda Prelude - Trinity
    2001 Toyota RAV4 - Tank
    2005 Acura TL - Persephone
    2009 Acura MDX - Morpheus
    2011 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R - Apoc

My 2013 Tesla Model S will be Oracle (as she represents the future).

Admittedly, I am reserving Neo for if and when I get an NSX... but having been bitten by the EV bug, Neo may be Tesla's next-gen sports car. :)

I didn't name my cars until one day: I was working at a bookstore as a used book buyer and was sorting through boxes of books about horses, both fiction and non-fiction. I took a break to run out and feed the meter where my 1966 seafoam green Toyota Corona was parked and I spontaneously thought, "There's ol' Minty.". When my husband restored a 1967 Toyota Stout pick-up, it came back from the paint shop with the wrong shade of red. It had gone in for a repeat of the original color, a very basic red, and came out with an orangey "Mars" red. It was a bit shocking but now we like it. That truck is now known as Caliente. We also have a blue 2001 Toyota Corolla which, while undeniably a great workhorse which we have no complaints about, has never inspired naming.

So far we have themes of horsey, color and temperature. We're getting a brown Model S and are thinking of naming it Coco.

After news today of some downed power lines due to the sick snowfall, and the radio cautioning us not to come in contact with the power lines, I've decided my Model S will be called Live Wire! Also, it counts as good Autobot name for an electric car.
In completely the wrong direction, Electro-cute would be a good My Little Pony name.

I've yet to decide, but toying with an idea. Given the frunk space, I immediately thought of the Mach 5 from Speed Racer. It's got similar styling, speed and curious cockpit functions to boot. I think the catapulting function may be hidden. Has it been found yet?

I plan to put a monkey in the frunk all the time because it's just too perfect not to. Optional names would be Sprytle, Chim Chim, Trixie...Pops...from the show but not sure if those really work. Maybe Trixie or Sprytle. I can't bear to associate such a fine machine with a monkey. If I got an X as well, then I fear the vehicles would always be fighting...

We already have an "Otto" who sometimes flies the airplane for me (he's the "otto-pilot"), so I couldn't use that. We refer to our cars as a function of what they are, so we talk about taking "the van" or "the BMW". My Model S was just baptized as "the carpet" a few days ago, in reference to Aladdin's magic carpet: silent, awe-inspiring, futuristic, magical... and it flies. :-D

alas, 3 years or more before I'll be able to buy a Gen3, but on the topic of names...

perhaps a bit out there, but anyone else think referring to Tesla's cars as digital cars makes sense?

i.e. Silicon Valley DNA of the car a different animal than original electric cars of 1900s. The instant and smooth torque seems digital in comparison to the clunky ICE's analogue like gear shifting acceleration. There's also the S's ability to be upgraded digitally. Finally there's the delight of the enhanced experience of an S people associate with smart phones/tablets rather than compromised experience people associate with term electric car, i.e. Leaf (no offense to any Leaf owners... I'm referring to mainstream perception).
