Pencils down in 6 weeks - Model 3 design work nearly finished part 2

What I'd like to hear is what's their aim for the "max range" equivalent version of model 3. Of course those numbers will probably change before the car is out but it would be nice get some indication.

Of course, if we take a "basic model S" and "basic model 3" specs they seem to be pretty close to each other, so here's to hoping that "max range" 3 will be more or less the same as "max range" S.

I'm still caught between the S and the 3. The S would financially be a bit of a struggle (at the moment, not in 2018), but would have the tailgate and more room and I can have it now, but, if I wait, then the 20K difference will mean that I can drop that off the mortgage, or take the family for a good holiday in Australia etc. My lack of patience is killing me :)

Sadly if you are paying in pounds sterling you should have bought an S last week. Difference in 3 S price is no longer your material financial variable. #BRECONSIDER

I think people are over-thinking this rear hatch / trunk lid / rear glass / rear passenger headroom thing. Yes, it might be a nice selling point, but how many of us have a rear seat full of adults even 10 percent of the time? I might have had rear seat passengers 3 times in the last 5 years, at most.

And as for kids in the back seat - they aren't paying the bills, so their opinions don't count. They don't have to be comfortable.

Are you serious, my child comes first how selfish can you be!
50% of the time is my son in the back seat. The more comfort for him the better and safer.

Owners say the Model S is a large car. Being in London, does that affect your decision? With the Model 3 you get a car that seats five, it's a smaller car which would probably be better for European travel, and you possibly get more range and performance for less money.
  • Jun 26, 2016
    Tiberius
The obvious answer is wait for the model 3. Between the two, there's absolutely no benefit to the Model S except for selfish the desires. I totally get it but since you have a family, the choice is crystal clear.

At least wait for the reveal part 2.... you'll have more info then and the release will be that much closer. Until then, you have to put on your sad British face and wait it out.

Are the pencils down yet? Or was that just a time filling statement by Elon?

Oh wait.....that statement was only made 4 weeks ago. 2 more to go I guess.

    five weeks. ;)

    I don't think, there will be a delay. that wouldn't be tela-like :D

Yes, I thought the same, yesterday.
Somebody who asked Elon already on Twitter?
  • Jul 11, 2016

Elon DID tweet yesterday about the trunk opening....so maybe pencils are down, they just haven't told us yet.

I wonder if there were any last minute autopilot changes...
  • Jul 11, 2016
    ModelNforNerd

Doubtful, as I believe the plan was for Model 3 to get AP v2.0 all along.

I'm guessing S/X will have an announcement that all cars configured after ____(?) date will have the hardware installed, and they will push software update later.

Then the 3 will have it at launch.

(Guess between the new "master plan" and Reveal Part 2...we'll find out)

    JeffK
We did see that pic of that Tesla driving around with LIDAR. While they could be benchmarking LIDAR against their current solution there are some cheaper LIDAR options nowadays and it does provide redundancy to camera and radar based systems.

Autopilot 2.0 and leading up to full autonomy is all about redundancy.
  • Jul 11, 2016
    ModelNforNerd

there have been talks of the new Mobileye system...I'm assuming it's being tested on S's and X's, and might soon be spotted on a 3 mule.

in the wake of the recent crash, it's been noted that AP v2.0 will be able to handle cross-traffic situations, something (sadly :( ) that the current version does not handle well.

I worry if the Model 3 isn't fully autonomous that the used market is going to explode 2-3 years after launch...

He said pencils down in 6 weeks on June 2'nd so I guess July 14'th is 6 weeks.
  • Jul 11, 2016
    brshoemak
I wouldn't worry too much about the exact date. I'd rather he take take a bit more time to button up the design and engineering rather than to call it good enough because of something he said at a conference. Also, he said pecils down in 'about 6 weeks' - gave himself a bit of wiggle room.
  • Jul 11, 2016
    VIKING26
Agreed, get it right. Everyone is so excited to hear that things are progressing (myself included), but I'd rather wait an extra month to two for a better designed car.

Update is coming later this week for "part 2" of model 3, im thinking that it will also have some updates on the final version that is supposedly completed around this week...

Did you have a source for this as I've missed this one. Or do you mean the "The new secret plan" Elon tweeted about?

I tried to copy image from his Twitter, but didn't work, but he tweeted on July 10 "Working on secret Tesla master plan, part 2, hoping to publish later this week". It could however just be a date for the part 2 reveal, but ill be anxiously waiting :)

Agreed , a little extra time spent in finalizing design details is time well spent and can reflect in product quality and cost cutting savings as well as speeding up production.
  • Jul 12, 2016

I don't believe that the "Tesla Secret Master Plan, part 2" is going to have anything to do with the Model 3. I'm betting that this plan is going to concentrate on Tesla Energy, and how a buyout of Solar City will fit in & allow Tesla to further ween us off of oil and coal.
  • Jul 12, 2016
    ModelNforNerd

I agree, BUT....since it seemed as if Part 1 of the Master Plan had different pieces, I'll agree with others who've mentioned the possibility of mobility...as well as autonomy.

I think Tesla is going to share their "fine-print" mapping that AP-enabled Teslas have come up with so far, in an effort to make autonomous driving safer, and potentially have interconnected autonomous vehicles all talking the same "language" some day.

The Master Plan will be multi-faceted, and beneficial to everyone if it can be pulled off.
  • Jul 12, 2016
    Swampgator
I do think we should remember Tesla's often purpose: To accelerate the transition to sustainable transport/energy.
Autonomy and ride share are not the big drivers here. Adoption of solar and BEV are.
Since the master plan is not detail oriented features, etc need not be included.
Pickup trucks constitute the largest ICE segment and since they also have the poorest fuel economy/emissions, I think they must be included. They will need to be a few years away because the battery tech must be good enough for one to tow a 5000 lb trailer 200+ miles. Currently it is not.
Solar bundled with a new car will happen, I'm just not sure how Elon includes solar in the master plan, but somehow I think he will.
  • Jul 12, 2016
    ModelNforNerd

While autonomy and ride share aren't the end game, they are a way to get us there. It would help those who currently have to rely on others (the elderly, or sick, or otherwise unable to drive) to have access to clean and reliable transportation. Replace a lot of the local chair vans and taxis with EV equivalents, and you've added another layer of EV adoption.

Could enough people afford the pick up truck to make a difference?
  • Jul 12, 2016
    JeffK
Not at the moment. We'd need higher energy density to make it a reasonable cost / range. I'd say we'll see one in around five years.

I mean you can technically do it with the model 3 platform. but it's not going to be $35,000
  • Jul 12, 2016
    Topher
Elon said that they weren't planning any announcements for 'pencils down' date.

We get to wait some more.

You're not new here.....link your source, please.
  • Jul 12, 2016
    Topher
Sure. Have you looked at the price of new trucks? A F150 supercab starts at $39,000. Bigger trucks are in the 60-80 range.

The reason people get beefier trucks is horsepower and torque (F450 (starting at $53,000 and up to $75,000) has 440 hp and 860 ft-lb torque) A model X has 532 hp and 713 ft-lb torque. Think of what Tesla could do if they were trying to design a truck.

    Thank you kindly.

Lots of time those groups need human help also. It's not uncommon for taxi drivers (at least around here) help elderly with carrying groceries etc. I would think younger people would benefit more from autonomous vehicles.
  • Jul 12, 2016
    Model 3
Autonomy + ride share = fewer cars on the road = fewer cars made = more sustainable transport. And remember that from Tesla it will be all BEV's.

Ok, This is officially Pencils Down Day.

    Has anyone heard anything?

I think the next thing we'll hear is the gigafactory grand opening on July 29th. The Model 3 reveal will be a few months after that. I think it's best for them to keep their cards close to the chest until the second reveal so they can truly leapfrog the future autonomous/semi-autonomous competition.

Pretty excited thinking about how, within 36 hours, my wife and I will be getting a tour of the Gigafactory, and at least getting a chance to view the Model 3 mock-up car (the red one) in person. Hoping that the two working Model 3 prototypes will be there as well.
