P85 Badging? part 2

forgive my noobness, but why would you want to debadge the model S? are you embarrassed to drive it or something?
  • Feb 23, 2013

    It's a European thing...

You wouldn't want to show your neighbor that you can afford the BMW 750iL when he is driving the 730.

The class envy forces you to stay low key.

Why show off that you have the 85 version when the next guy can only afford the 40?

Very common to do in Europe, not so much here.

On the other hand, all my cars are debadged. I think it's cleaner looking.

I'm okay with leaving the "Model S" on the car as a bit of free publicity for Tesla. I'm not going to add the "85" badge, though, which adds clutter and advertises the price I paid a little too clearly for my personal comfort.

I can understand removing anything dealer specific - their stickers or license plates, but not the make and/or model of the car...

or perhaps the guy with the 730 is trying to make it look like he can afford a 750il? so it can go both ways .. people could be stretching their budgets and buy a low end car and debadge it to disguise the fact that they bought the cheapest model available just to get in the game and keep up with the jones. I mean if thats the way people are then I could see them debadging a 40 or 60, but why bother debadging the 85 or P85?

personally if either one of those is your reason, I think that is just very lame - one guy's trying to make himself look better (and probably should not be buying a BMW in the first place so this person is irresponsible with their money), and the other guy is trying hide his wealth (which is also stupid, because if you really wanted to hide your wealth then don't buy a BMW and instead you should go buy a chevy or a hyundai or something like that).

so it's somehow your fault that your neighbor didn't pay attention in school? If that's the reason someone is going to debadge their P85, and if I was the neighbor with the 40 I would feel like that is intentionally mocking me. people should not be embarrassed about being successful in life.

also, really, when you think about it, if you debadge your car, and your car gets stolen, how the hell is a cop going to find it? You report your vehicle stolen, it get's BOLO'd for the make and model, but if they can't easily identify the make and model of a car, well your car probably isn't going to be recovered.

IMHO debadging a car is ghetto looking anyway. It will likely give cops more of a reason to pull you over, like you are trying to hide something, and it could be argued that its also enough to give them 'probable cause' to search your vehicle - a stretch, but likely one that would get argued and judge end up siding with the officer in the end. Either way not worth the hassle in my opinion.

I intend to add a "S 60" badge to my 60. I'll post pictures later.

I mostly do not want the P85 badge because the car looks cleaner without it. The make&model stays however.

Also I do not see the need to advertise my car as a P85. I've had a few BMWs before, mostly without the badge. It was however tempting to put a 316i badge on the 328i to mess with people ;)

If the factory can't delete the badge, the store will have to do it before I take delivery. No way I'm doing it myself on a new car.

I personally think only P85 should have a badge. What's the point of having a badge for 85, 60, 40? It's the same car, just a different size battery.

Understand your trepidation, but its very easy and not likely to cause any issues with paint at all.
Have you considered going to a local car shop that does high-end stereo and tinting? They would be intimately familiar with the technique of heat/floss/cleaner... no problem.

I saw a Honda Civic with Maserati badging a few days ago. Surely it must have been tongue in cheek -- the owner must know that no one is fooled.

I am in the same boat...I am either removing the Model S or adding the P85. I have a message into the Rockville service center about getting one.

    Would love to have it!!!

    i live in California (with a C ;)

Reason it should be on there is b/c I am on a daily basis propositioned to race someone. So far they have all been good hearted/natured. They see the car on the freeway and do their best to get next to me. Give me a nod or a peace sign....then they floor it hoping I follow suit.

All but a Lamborghini were impressed! (350Z, Camarro SS, mustang, 911, M5, Bentley, WRX, list goes on....).

if this happens to a 40 or 60 (or even NON performance 85kw) MS then the other driver should know that. Otherwise they will just say they smoked/destroyed a MS. It's like winning a drag race against a camarro versus winning a drag race against a Camarro SS. Or a BMW 325 versus an M3. These cars are NOT the same...and they should be badged differently!

Another reason why many people here (including myself and many people I know) debadge their cars is the "destruction because of envy" factor. Believe me there are lots of annoyed people out there who see a car with high-end badging and go like "hey, I can't afford a BMW 750, why should that owner enjoy his/her car", take out a sharp metal object and leave some "nice" scratches over hood, doors etc. Like so:

    scratch.jpg

With a debadged car at least these people don't know when you've got the top engine under the hood. Might stop some of them.

And then there is the factor that mattered to me the most: it makes cleaning the car easier, and rust is less of a problem (here, many badges are still screwed on not glued on).

And about stolen cars: car thieves here seem to care more for cars with high-end badging. So another reason for getting rid of those badges.

Somehow I don't think anybody outside of Model S owners is going to really see any difference between types of Model S's. They'll have the same reaction to all of them.

I saw the most disgusting thing yesterday, in Half Moon Bay, a white Model S parked and someone had painted a red Nazi symbol on the hood. I felt soo bad for the owner. Hopefully it was just lipstick and easy removable.

Who does something like that! Didn't expect that, especially not in California...

The "too much sun" theory doesn't work over here.

There are just too many idiots out there who destroy other people's property just for fun! (Our neighbours' house was graffiti-ed massively some months back, cars are scratched, tires ripped, antennas broken off, lights kicked in, stuff smeared of the paint, and the "best" bit - especially popular in Berlin - cars are set fire to at the roadside!
Bloody anarchists/left-wing radicals/anti-capitalism activists. Just too many of these around nowadays. And of course there are many young unemployed and frustrated people who just like to vent their frustration by destroying stuff - especially property of people who seem to be "better off".
    Sad really.

Took delivery of mine yesterday from a truck out of Chicago, and also have no badge. Must have been one of the last performance machines not to get the badging. VIN 5191. Not certain whether I want it or not. Already getting frustrated with the "how much did you pay for that thing?" question. At least for those ignorant folks, I can just quote the overall range, and there is no outward indication of where mine is within the range.

Yeah, it's a California thing. I'm sure nothing like that could ever happen in New Jersey. :)

Seriously, it's just a problem everywhere, in any locale. Haters gonna hate. I try to park my car where it will be pretty visible, but that kind of stuff can happen anywhere. Sorry for the Model S owner with paint on the hood. That's pretty aggressive.

    No upgrades & debadging procedure

I was told at the Rockville SC on Friday (when picking up my 85 from service) that there is no plan or opportunity to upgrade cars that were produced without number badging. Mine is a '13, so it isn't purely a model year thing - it was described as a production-line upgrade and the luck of timing as to whether you got it or not. I don't care either way. The advisor did say that ALL Model S vehicles will be badged going forward, including the 40 and 60.

Forgive me if this was covered elsewhere: Debadging any car made since about 1990 is very simple and there is no chance of damaging or scratching the car if you do it this way: Get some plain (unflavored) dental floss, wrap a couple feet around your hands, and slide it behind one edge of the badge. Then use a sawing motion to cut through the foam tape. All emblems are applied with 3M Automotive double-sided foam tapes or equivalent. You will cut through the foam, and can then "roll" off any residue from the tape that is left behind. There are no longer any holes used in applying auto trim of this kind.

I was at the Watertown (Boston) service center today and saw 27 newly-delivered Model S's, all with VINs in the mid-upper 5000s. Didn't have time to compare the status based on VIN, but there were both P85s and regular 85s with and without badging, though more unbadged than badged in my unscientific sample. I don't know if there were any 60s or not - certainly none badged as such.

Mine was delivered on 2/27 VIN 5438 and I didn't even notice the badging until this thread. I do like the P85 badge back there. I does not stand out that much and is subtle enough for my tastes.

They are adding a P85 badge to performance models

I was at the Denver Tesla service center getting my spoiler put on and they had a performance model with the badging they said the new P85's were coming with the badging and owners will have the option of getting it added soon. I'm personally very happy about this decision.

    Hello all!

I get to pick my P85 up friday and I was told that it does not have the badge. My vin is 62xx so not all have them. My service director was going to try to get one, but she said they are not due bill items. Not really too sure how I feel about that, but I hope she can work it out. Also no spoiler or parcel shelf at this time. And of course still waiting on the HPWC.

Dmfick, I picked up my P85 yesterday (March 5) from the ERockville Service Center. My car does not have the P85 badge. Lenny, who is the service manager told me that the P85 and 85 badges are on order and that the owners of every P85 and 85 car delivered to date will be offered the badge for their car. I wanted it put on the due bill, but he assured me I will get one, and that it really not a due bill item, as the due bill is supposed to be for items ordered for the car (i.e., spoiler, shelf, etc.). My prior dealings with Lenny have been excellant, so I trust that I will be notified when the badge becomes available.

    That explains it!

I should have snapped a photo. It was about the same size as in the picture in your link, and positioned right at the center on the hood. It was red, and looked as if painted on with a lipstick, probably to make sure it could be removed easily.

Now I feel terrible for assuming vandalism and not thinking about this as a possibility.

The official answer is already posted on the Tesla forums:

We recently began to apply P85, 85, and 60 badges to newly produced cars in Fremont. 40 kWh cars will also receive badges once production starts. In the coming weeks, we will begin stocking these at our service centers for placement on delivered cars on request. If you have taken delivery of a Model S without a badge and would like one added, we'll be happy to apply one during your next service appointment. All you need to do is ask.
