P85 Badging? part 1

  • Dec 2, 2012
    jhs_7645
I'm curious, with some production performance 85kWh cars being shipped if anybody has taken note of whether it has the 'P85' badge or not. IIRC, there was debate some time ago on the forums as to whether this was going to be on production cars or not.
  • Dec 2, 2012
    FlasherZ
It does not. It was scrapped after Jurvetson's car.

    (I rather liked it.)

Good I suppose if you're an owner of a 40 or 60 kWh battery pack, as they all look the same (except for possible wheel and wing differences). But for those with a P85, it's missed bragging rights, and improved resale value. IMO

I'm with the group that's glad they scrapped the idea. Two reasons: (1) it's a bit garish stylistically and (2) I kinda of like not advertising the vehicle's price/value for would-be thieves.
  • Dec 2, 2012
    EarlyAdopter
Those would have to be some pretty sophisticated thieves, since there's no ignition to hotwire, no starter motor to rig. It's all computer controlled requiring an RFID key to be present. Not saying it would be impossible to steal a Model S, but I think the only thefts we'll ever see are cases where someone left their key in the car.

As far as advertising for smash and grabs for contents inside, the car's shape will do that all by itself. I don't think badging will make one bit of difference.

Personally, I wish Tesla had developed a nice, subtle-but-present badge for the performance model, much like the BMW M logo, or Audi S logo.
  • Dec 2, 2012

I also wish there was some sort of exterior Performance Badging. We pay a premium for it, should be indicated IMHO.

Maybe they could provide a carbon fiber fin or something...

Perfectly happy with the non badging on our perf. Wouldn't care at all if later cars had badging.

I would very much like the option of having the P85-badge on my car. Cant see any problem for those not wanting it. Most car manufacturers give you a choice of "removing" badging at no cost when ordering a custom car from them. At least VW, BMW, Audi etc do so as standard.

Having the P85-badge would be nice for me at least, but I also like to see the AMG/M3/M5/M6/S4/RS4/Etc-badges on other brands performance cars. I simply feel it gives the cars some extra "oomph, oh yes I'm special"-feel as compared to the more standard motorised versions of the cars that looks more or less the same.. Most people dont recognize it, but the people in the know acknowledge it right away. I'm not going for the CF-spoiler since I like the look of the car better without it so there goes the only styling-cue visible on the outside of the car.

+1. Was there a reason it was dropped? I'd rather have the badge and be able to take it off (e.g. with carefully used dental floss) than not have the option at all.
  • Dec 4, 2012
    gg_got_a_tesla
They ran out of chrome?!

Seriously, as I recall, the reaction back then - when Jurvetson's car was delivered - on these forums was very mixed with folks dissecting the "Phase Current Amplification" tagline beneath and such. And, some were worried about telegraphing the price of the car as well with the badge. Tesla may have taken this as appropriate feedback and may have chosen to drop it for good.
  • Dec 4, 2012

I'm rather the opposite, I'd rather have no badging and woudn't mind getting rid of the "Model S" badging as well. As long I know I'm driving the Performance version, that's good enough for me.
I removed all badging on my Saab 95 and that made it look much "cleaner". Besides It also Get people a bit curious of "what kind of car is that?"
If I do get the Performance, I'll go for thr CF spoiler though. Then Tesla people would know it's a Performance. The P85 badge would not make any sense to people not knowing Tesla anyhow.
  • Dec 4, 2012
    Doug_G
Not sure that's a good idea. Everyone's seen a Saab. Most people haven't seen a Tesla. My Roadster's TESLA logo is kinda hard to read. As a result I often get people tailgating me trying to read it. Quite annoying. If there's nothing at all you might find people doing stupid stuff while trying to figure out what your car is.
  • Dec 4, 2012
    brianman
    Heh.
If you're really driving the Performance, nobody will have time to see the badging.
If you're parked, then it's just an excuse for people to drool, hate or steal. None of which really appeals to me.

    Just one opinion.

I'm sure if Tesla decides to offer a badge, it will be available to add. I had someone peel off most of my Roadster Tesla logo & it was easily remedied the next time I was in Menlo Park.

I'd probably opt NOT to add a badge, but agree it should be an option.

  • Dec 5, 2012

Hmm ok. Here at least Audi, VW and BMW does this free of charge.. This is of course when ordering a car directly from the factory, and not from a dealers lot.

When I bought my Audi S4 I asked the dealer to remove the "Supercharged" badges along the side of the car when they prepped it, since I thought they look gaudy and had sharp angled edges just waiting to grab a wash mitt. No problem, no charge.

  • Jan 13, 2013
    jhs_7645
Well, since I started the thread, I might as well comment :) In general, the idea of a P85 badge appeals to me, but the design has to be subtle and blend in *perfectly* with the car. Side story time: When I got my 1999 Passat, I got the 1.8T. The only badging Passat had for their engines was for the V6, the 1.8 was conspicuous in it's *lack* of badging. Except in Europe. Now here's the funny thing. In Europe they understood the 1.8, that it's actually a pretty freakin' awesome engine, combining fuel economy and power, so guess what.. They *HAD* a 1.8T badge, but only over there. So.. to the internet I went, I ordered a badge and had it sent over here and I installed it in the exact position that VW had intended. The match to the the badge 'Passat' was perfect.

OK, enough of the side story, my point really is this. If it's not designed and manufactured by Tesla, there will be something about the badge that doesn't fit the car, the slope of the letters, the font, the kerning, the exact reflectiveness of the chrome, etc.. so.. unless Tesla makes the badge, it just won't work for me.
  • Jan 13, 2013
    EarlyAdopter
Needs stripes. Car won't be as fast without stripes. :)

Perhaps the "P" could be a small element, off the 85. Or alternatively each letter of "p e r f" could be in the stripes.

I don't think there would be much call for 40 or 60 badges so I if I were going to add anything I would just go with the word "Performance" in a similar script to the one used for "Sport" on the Roadster as the 85 is a bit superfluous.
Personally, as I'm not getting a performance I will stay with nothing.

In my (ill-conceived) message in the middle of this thread, I was trying to hit something similar but not just copy the original P85 badge... I think a copy of that badge is definitely possible, though.

Welcome to the forum. You're in luck. I happen to have something for ya:
    RearBadgingOnGraphPaper.jpg

The backing is 8.5" x 11" graph paper, so the "Model S" is approximately 8.5" wide. Note that the spacing isn't identical to when the letters are attached to the vehicle, as they are detached from the vehicle in this photo.

    Notes:
    - The red on the T(esla) logo is just a reflection.
    - The "Model S" thickness ia about an 1/8th of an inch.
    - The "T" thickness is about 3/16th of an inch.

Wow, that's just about perfect! Can you verify that the M is ~ 0.5 inches tall? (I got that via 8.5" / 34 (grid squares) * 2 ... the M looks about 2 squares tall)

If anyone cares, my current plan is to use the image from page 5 (http://www.teslamotorsclub.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=14669&d=1358354830) as a base. That's the most "official" looking reference that matches the P85 badges on Elon's car and others, so that 's what I am going with.

    1) Vector version of the letters from the image above. (Done)

    2) 3D model of the badge.
In progess; I'm working on getting the slight bevel to export from either Maya or Blender properly... otherwise I'll have to go with sharp edges and sand them down later

    3) Get 3D prints of the models.
In progress: Shapeways - Make Share Your Products with 3D Printing I've been uploading the unfinished 3D models to get an idea of the cost... probably around ~$3-5 per print for the smooth plastic

    4) Chrome the 3D print
Researching: Short of actual triple plate chroming, I'm currently planning on using products from either UK's Premier Supplier Of Chrome Paint - Chrome Paint or Spaz Stix Paint to get the chrome finish. That will be followed by hand painting in the red center on the "P" (the 3D printed model should have a trough for that, so precision won't be an issue) and finally an automotive grade 2k clear coat.

All in all I expect the project to cost around ~$40-50 (with lots of leftover paint). As to why I'm doing it this way; I've been unable to find a company that will do small quantities (< 250) of custom emblems. EmblemART will do them, but the style of their prints isn't right.
  • Jan 25, 2013

  • Jan 25, 2013
    scriptacus
Thanks again. I guess mine will be slightly taller at 0.6" instead of 0.5625". Close enough. :)

I finished up the 3D model today and ordered prints in 3 different plastic materials though it sounds like it'll be a few weeks before I get them. Costs for each print range from $4.31 to $7.10. After those come in I'll see how they hold up to painting. If I can't get the finish I'm looking for, I may search around for a local shop that does chrome plating... And if they can't plate the plastic I may try a polished alumide or stainless steel print instead. ($4.58 and $18.32 respectively)

If you will be painting them in a color other than chrome, I think it is important to render them on the car in all the colors that Tesla Model S is offered in.
For instance, the P85 that was on car #1 had some red stripes down the long end of the P that was very BMW 'M' logo like.
The red on the 'P', IMHO, clashed with the signature red color of the car, while it would have gone well on a black or white car.
Since you are in LA, you should stop by Al & Ed's in West Hollywood and speak with Elie who will have referrals for you.

Count me in Scriptacus as I am also in Los Angeles and would like the P85 badging on my car as well...although I plan on blacking out most of my chrome with either matte vinyl wrap or carbon fiber wrap. Also have you thought about replacing the center grill plastic cone with a much cooler black mesh grill to match the lower mesh of the car? Thats what I also plan on doing but do not know which bodyshop to go to yet! Any ideas?

    Update:

Bad news. The Mirror Chrome paint on the 3D prints doesn't really work. The smoother materials have striations, and the fine detail materials have a sort of fine grained texture. Unfortunately in both of these cases the paint picks up all of these imperfections and never quite gets smooth. The parts are all too small and fine to attempt sanding down (e.g. The inside loops of the "8").

I have one unpainted print left that I may try to get chromed, though I'm not sure what the cost will be, or if the plastic can even work with the process.

Best bet at this point is probably to try and do a group buy on an actual shop made badge, as mentioned in another badging thread.

I was just there this afternoon and Alex had not heard of the badging yet ... I guess he looked into after i dropped by. Did you initiate the call or did he?

Actually, I was the one who told them about the badge. Gregory checked and ordered some according to his email.

Well people in California tailgate regardless, so I'm not sure it can get much worse. :)

I definitely prefer the one they ended up with over this one. Now we just need to see if the 60's are getting them as well (my guess is that they will).

My car shipped without a carbon fiber spoiler (on the punch list).. I fully expect them to install it when they get around to me. I don't think this is much different. Other than it wasn't officially on a punch list.

No doubt an adhesive on the back, likely something from 3M.

ah ok, I've never even met Gregory. I thought there were just two working out of the Laval center but I've only ever dropped in as a tourist as of yet so obviously that was a bad assumption. Is Gregory a service tech or a DS or ...?

I just got my S today. Unfortunately it cam with no badging of the P85

Andrewket I'm sorry are you saying that the service center installed this for you? Did you have to request it? I just received my delivery of the Performance 85 today and was told they do not instal the badges anymore. I want one! Any idea how I would go about getting it???

Thanks in advance for any input.

Just picked-up my 85kWh (non-performance) and it had the "85" badge... None of the 60kWh cars got a badge... My DS said that they started doing it only a few days ago and only the P85 and 85 will get badges... 60 and 40 will not.

I hope we get an option to delete the badge, just like you can have you BMW delivered without any. I'd prefer them never sticking it to my car in the first place to having the Tesla shop remove it afterwards. However this plays out, my car will not have any badges.

Most badges can be removed with some fishing line and an appropriate residue remover.

I asked and was shot down. Was told that due to the way the car is manufactured, it's not possible to delete the badge.
