This is super cool. Even if we don't learn anything new (somewhat likely), it will be cool to see pics from inside the GF.

EM has a flair for the dramatic. Maybe he will be there to show off the GF and Model 3. Maybe he has "bombshell" news for us.....

    we can dream, right?

Pretty sure he has access to a G-V.....

But yea....he probably won't be there today, which means we won't get any really cool news, since he loves to be the one sharing that with us.

UNLESS....he sends a timely tweet, which he has been known to do....

The author of that article is a pretentious douche. "we iPhoned Teslas PR department" lol seriously?

Don't see anything wrong with that.

MT has a rather inflated opinion of itself, based on all the puffery in that piece.

They kind of do. See their Apple car article where they made it seem like they got the scoop over everyone else (when it was just something they had some one make up).

If anyone is on social media with Motor Trend, could you have them take some measurements of the length and width and settle the question (or at least take a perfect side profile shot with something for reference in size)?

Also, some better pictures of the trunk opening would be helpful (the ones from the event were too dark to see much detail).

So on the wall Tesla has called it Giggafactory 1... inferring there could be more??
  • Apr 21, 2016
    GoTslaGo
Yep, gotta be. Several threads out there talking about battery production that would be needed to convert most car sales to EVs.
  • Apr 21, 2016

Yeah! Another pic of a 3...:)

Which of course is clearly posted on the sign, NOT TO SHARE...
  • Apr 21, 2016
    Dan Detweiler
My understanding is that the portion of the Gigafactory they currently have under construction is only 1/10 of the final factory. They will build further modules as need arises. Perhaps the Gigafactory 1 title is in reference to this being the first of 10 modules to the site.

Upon closer inspection it was reported that the Model 3 is actually 23% shorter than the Model S, even shorter yet than what Elon Musk had mentioned prior to the unveiling. At that point a Tesla PR rep fired back, "You have to measure it from the base!"
  • Apr 21, 2016
    JamesL
Well, given that the Gigafactory will be able to produce enough battery packs for 500K cars a year, in order to get to 1 million per year by 2025, you'd need another one.

Ha, yeah, first thing I noticed is the sign saying not to share pictures. Looks great in silver.

I'm counting down until someone makes comment about the nose...3...2..1...:p

One thing I just noticed, that I hadn't before is that the fender actually has two creases, one from the tip of the back of the headlight and then one closer in towards the hood opening. Was it always like that? I'm sure it probably was, but didn't notice before.

Another reason why I do not like Motor Trend. They achieved acceleration times with the MS P90DL nobody else in the world was able to achieve. They gave Tesla a reason to state false acceleration times (rollout scam).

I think MT is a little bit to much in bed with the industry. I am not surprised they get a private date with the Model 3...

And that's it. So... not much new at this point. They are going to do another live feed of the car driving around later today.
  • Apr 21, 2016
    ModelNforNerd

I watched too. Wasn't highly impressed.

I'm curious if this is the same Alpha Prototype we saw at the reveal, or if the interior has already changed, and this is a Beta?

from the very little they showed through the glass roof and windshield, the screen is still there, but they were very careful to steer clear of showing anything else inside.

When they demonstrated how the door handles worked, they went to the back of the car.....

so the tin foil hat conspiracy theorist wants to know:

WHY CAN'T I SEE THE INTERIOR OF THIS PARTICULAR CAR...UNLESS IT'S SOMEHOW DIFFERENT THAN THE ONE MILLIONS OF US HAVE ALREADY SEEN...???

I noticed that as well. I say Tesla with an "s". Don't care how Elon says it.

I apparently also mispronounce ASUS ( I say "A-suhss") as well as CATIA, which the maker pronounces "cauht-ia"
  • Apr 21, 2016

Same thought here. The reasoning behind not showing the interior was "why bother." It seems like a pretty weak reason to not at least show what they have.

Daaaaaang, 275/30/20 tires on the back. Those are about the same size as my BMW M3. That ain't messing around on such a little car....
  • Apr 21, 2016
    ModelNforNerd

    One thing to note, though:

this one has red brake calipers. It's the performance model. Base model may end up with 18's or 19's.
  • Apr 21, 2016
    Dan Detweiler
Wonder if 19" wheels will be standard like on the S. I prefer them due to better wear and cost to replace.

Using those tire sizes and some very rough measurements from available photos the model 3 is about 170 inches long. That's a good bit shorter then an A4.

I had the same thought. I prefer even smaller if they have it available for the same reason. I don't need the large diameter rims, and it'll do much better against potholes too.
  • Apr 21, 2016
    Dan Detweiler
After test driving an S the other day I will definitely NOT need to max out the performance that these cars are capable of too. Had to change my underwear afterwards! 19s will be fine thank you.

    JohnSnowNW
I would also prefer smaller wheels, 18-19". Minnesota winters are not kind to asphalt, nor are repairs particularly timely.
  • Apr 21, 2016
    ModelNforNerd

I test drove a MS P90D-L a few weeks ago.......

It would be very hard to persuade me NOT to check that box on a Model 3. The wife was along for the test drive...she KNOWS that will be a hard battle to fight and win with me. LOL
  • Apr 21, 2016
    Dan Detweiler
0-60 in 6 seconds will be just fine. About all my poor heart can handle! ;)

I do however want the larger battery for range. If what happens with the S holds true, that will also knock a good second or so off the 0-60 time. Lord help me!!!

    Dan
  • Apr 21, 2016
    plankeye
The larger rims look great, I agree, but for the reasons already stated, I'll probably be sticking with the stock size. Plus, a higher profile tire will help make the wheel well gap not look as large.
  • Apr 21, 2016
    Garlan Garner
20's for me - weather it comes with them or not.
  • Apr 21, 2016
    ModelNforNerd

In some cases I would agree, like this one.

But on my current car, filling that gap actually worked better with me lowering the stock height by about 1.25" all the way around.

I wouldn't dream of doing that to a Tesla though. I would imagine for aerodynamic reasons, they'll be paying some attention to wheel gap anyway.
  • Apr 21, 2016
    Skotty
How about that rear tire width? Crazy. I'm sure the base model tires will be quite a bit smaller in both width and wheel diameter. I would guess base model might be something like 235/50 R18 front and rear. Certainly not 275/35 R20.
  • Apr 21, 2016
    Garlan Garner
I don't remember what the tire sizes are, however the BIG REVEAL camera's did a close up of the tires....which showed the tire sizes. The only thing I know for sure ( and was surprised at ) was that the black matte reveal car had different size tires on the front than it did on the rear.

For me? My M3 will have 20's. The car will be wrapped - white carbon fiber.

I would need to cash in my 401K for that! ????

I think the biggest implication from the brief video was that the interior of the car as shown in the reveal is almost meaningless. There was some mention of being able to be very creative with the final version. So as we all suspect, Reveal II will really show us something different.

It seems that nearly all of the development so far has been battery/drivetrain and exterior, and the next two years will be refining what they have and designing the interior and other details to include as much as possible while sticking to the price point. That makes sense: first you have to develop what makes the car a car, then you see what is left for the "cowbells."
  • Apr 21, 2016
    ecarfan
It's not an inference. Elon has stated many times that looking out into the future, the demand for batteries will require many, many Gigafactories.

I totally agree. I took that route with my 1995 Civic. But I think that car had a wheel well gap at least twice as big as the M3.
  • Apr 21, 2016

Someone should take that video and count the floor tiles and determine the width and length of the car. Would have been easier if they hadn't parked at an angle to the tiles, but shouldn't be too hard, right?
  • Apr 21, 2016

I thought AWD is faster than RWD? The guy was saying 0-60 in less than 6 seconds. I thought that was standard. I guess if RWD is 5.9 seconds and AWD is 4 seconds it's still less than 6 seconds so technically correct. :)
  • Apr 21, 2016

  • Apr 21, 2016

Yeah, I think they got the two things mixed up. Under 6 seconds for the base model and AWD is available.
  • Apr 21, 2016
    Snow Drift
Well, it depends on how you interpret the answer.

The MT guy asked if it was 6 seconds or less? Someone (Tesla?) responded, yes, per the reveal.

Now, the reveal said 0-60 under 6 seconds. This is true for both RWD and AWD.

At the reveal they said the AWD was faster than the RWD. That does not mean that AWD isn't 0-60 in less than 5.8 seconds (or faster). All we know is they are all less than 6 seconds.
  • Apr 21, 2016

I will definitely be going with the smaller tires. I especially dont want a staggered setup - had that on my Lexus which translated to ~$1000/ year in tires since they only got about 25k on them and that's how much I drove in a year.
  • Apr 21, 2016

This article is terrible. It's poorly written and the Apple fanboy word choice brings the quality down further. Some of their "specs" and "stats" are clearly wrong, as others here have already noted. The constant "FOLLOW US" social media ads are annoying. Sure, add that to the end of the video. But a picture in the middle of the photos gallery and a three minute "teaser" just to say that? No; just no. The only nice things about this video were seeing the exterior in a well lit space and the door handles.

This article is like water in the desert. Would I accept a drink from the devil? Probably. But I wouldn't have to be happy about it!

They are 12" x 24". Unfortunately, none of the indoor photos are from an angle which would allow us to figure the hypotenuse of the triangle made by the 3 relative to the 90 angle in the floor tiles. A photo from a balcony or terrace would have been the money shot.

The motor trend guys really didn't know much. We all heard the base model will be under 6 seconds a couple weeks ago. The AWD variant is not base and will be much quicker. That's when I lost my confidence in their reporting abilities. They seemed to be very interested in the door handles though!

Seems like they should have thought about either using a tap measure or walk foot-to-foot to get the length of the car. Tesla seems an expert at frustrating our efforts on determining the length of the car.

Well the current front end still isn't quite a slamdunk for me but I have to say my opinion of it has improved! I also have to reverse my opinion that the Tesla mustache would look better. No it wouldn't. Additionally, I tend to find silver cars rather boring and bland, but the Model 3 certainly wears the color well. I had ruled out silver as a color choice for me, but I may have to revisit that too. That photoshoot has definitely made me re-evaluate some opinions I had.

I would definitely go with 18" wheels, the 20" looks great, but not at all practical given our South African roads and judging the 3/5 series BMW they all have standard rims from 17-18" so I would think Tesla would do the same, including the AWD version would be a nice to have, but not necessary in a country that gets half an inch snow once every 3 years, then again if it makes a positive difference to the distance the car can travel I am sure it would be the top seller.

Noticed the front guards (fenders) are directed connected to the A pillars, would be very surprised if that made it to production, probably just body filler for looks at the moment.

Rear bumper also seamless with body, it's by far from production.

I'm looking forward to a "mega factory episode" about the giga factory. What intrigues me is how come a factory of this size, once complete can only produce 500000 batterie packs ? considering the Fremont manufactoring plant is much smaller but would be able to manufactor 500000 cars and not to forget lots of in house manufactured parts. Also the cost of the giga factory of 5 billion. That means they would need $2000 profit per batterie pack so the factory can be paid off in 5 years other wise it would be a bad investment right?
  • Apr 22, 2016

I quite liked the M3 when I saw the reveal photos but the MT videos show the car in all its glory and I now think it gorgeous with exquisite detailing - so classy and under-stated! Love the sharp but 'calm' edges............The haunches; the lights; the tail spoiler; etc

It looks so 'right' despite having such untraditional proportions (it is actually a 'weirdmobile' - huge wheelbase/minimal overhangs/glass roof/extra height(?).........!)

    Well done Franz (and others)!

I still can't help feeling that the nose is following the MX path - lots of deception and just a raw pallet for now. I think Tesla will come up with something new and different at Part 2. But we will all grow to love it..............
  • Apr 22, 2016

I have been thinking the exact same thing. I have never had a silver car for that same reason. But I do really like it on the M3.
  • Apr 22, 2016
    vjason
The factory will also produce battery packs for other Tesla products.

No need to pay it off that quickly. A company with 400K reservations 18 months from launch of a new product likely has access to as much (financing) cash as it wants to keep things moving.

Just keep the fingers crossed that the production ramp goes well. I shudder to think what stock traders will do if Tesla can't ramp up production on a reasonable schedule. Unfortunately those traders will determine what is reasonable, which sucks but that is how it is. SpaceX is fortunate that they aren't subject to the volatility of being a public company, as it allows them to do what they want without worrying about stock traders/external majority shareholders/etc.

Argh,.. Can we please stop assuming that "change the nose" means "add a grille"?!?

"Shape of nose" and "does it have a grille?" are completely orthogonal. Disliking the flat "duckbill" nose doesn't mean wanting a grille, it means wanting the shape changed. Those are two different and unrelated design elements.
  • Apr 22, 2016
    Dan Detweiler
I am fine with the way it looks now but I am also ok with a refinement of the lines of the nose if they decide to go that route, as long as any refinements don't mess with the aerodynamics and thus range of the vehicle.

For real. Even if they only wanted to accomplish getting a good photo/video shoot they seemed to have failed at that. Plus any kind of actual journalism of asking questions and finding out things we didn't already know from the reveal or Elon's tweets was a complete and utter failure.

I love it the way it is, and I feel if they add any superfluous design elements like the stache'... That it would be a retrenchment.

What was notably missing from that salt roof was all the solar panels it is supposed to be covered with.

The aerodynamic nose is a nice statement that his is a new car. But the "mustache" that appeared on the new S and X could also work. I am fine with either. These cosmetics don't make/break the deal.
What I'm getting worried about is how damn small it is. I'm a big guy, used to big honken SUV's for comfort. (yeah, I know I'm drowning polar bears). If these M3 crisp lines means I can't get into the little beast.....
The reveal had some big guys. The reporters said a 6'5" guy sat in front of a 6'3" during drive. Maybe, maybe, small is not too small. I'm worried. This MT shot did not alleviate this fear. I want Giga big!!

I noticed that there was a straight on, rear shot that would probably lend itself to using the known dimensions of the license plate to at least derive the car's width at the rear, if one were so inclined.
