JohnnyB85 We have a 30 lb. Golden doodle and drove around with him in the back with the rear seats down. I had problems with him falling forward off the seat under sudden braking, so I built him this box. It's a pretty basic box, but it anchors using the child seat anchor in one corner and the buckle that normally locks the seat up for passengers in the other. It's very secure (Insane mode tested) so I thought some other Tesla owners might want to copy the design. Our dog was anxious driving around without the box, but loves driving around with it.

marchino I haven't got my Model S yet (it arrives next week), but I bought the Tesla bootliner (A$ 260) and got a divider grille from eBay (about $60 including shipping to WA) to keep the dog off the back seats. I also got the chrome boot sills from Tesla (another $260) to try to protect the back when the dog jumps in and out.
Just in case you didn't know, Tesla now has an official brochure for accessories with Australian prices, so if you get that from them you don't need to ask for price quotes on every item. I still wish they'd open a store on the Australian Tesla website though.
Oct 2, 2015
Andyw2100 I don't know how the chrome will protect, but you may find that you want to protect that too.
What I do is really simple, but it works well.
I keep a blanket just crumpled up and shoved over to the left, in the well area just inside the hatch. (My UPC lives there as well.) When my 50 pound yellow lab has to jump in or out of the hatch, to get into or out of her crate, I just cover the entire back edge of the car with the blanket. It takes literally less than 5 seconds to set up, and the same to put away, and it's probably a good idea to have a blanket in the car anyway.

Bratwurst I purchased a liner from US trunk liner. Gallery
It was on the pricey side, but I travel with my Rottie and French bulldog everyday to work. It was the design I was looking for. Easy to install and remove, and easy to clean. It has the option of a rubber anti slip dog mat and a vinyl roll out bumper protector. I recommend both.
The first one I received didn't fit right, but I contacted the company and they sent the correct one quickly!
I like the material it is made of because it has enough static to hold hair, even with the windows open, but it can still be wiped or vacummed off easily.

AudubonB 23 months on, Borealis cannot leap any more - no more in and out of frunks, for example. We need to assist him in and out of most vehicles; the Tesla he usually can manage on his own. He has a custom ramp for negotiating other cars. He's on "short leash" for the rest of his life - not allowed to pursue snowshoe hares or squirrels in Alaska nor bunnies in Arizona. So he aged more quickly than he deserved - he and Aurora are about to turn 8 but he's probably about 2 or so years older, effectively, than his sister. His ineffable courteousness and good humor remain untouched.
Of all the many malamutes I've had or been privileged to know over the past 30 years - and all dogs are, of course, special in their own ways - Bobo stands head and shoulder above them all and always will.

Urgo I just got my Tesla recently and plan on driving from NC to MA for xmas and wanted to get something to transport my dog, plus have something to bring him around town to parks, etc. The OxGord cover as mentioned above looks like a great option but I ended up going for the 4Knines cover. It has a "hammock" mode that my dog seems to like so far. I put a video up trying it out for the first time. At first my dog is a bit nervous (first time in the car, he's used to sitting on the floor too) but he was quite content on the way back from the park.

DSurber Aluminum dog crate for an aluminum car
Its taken a while (a very long while) but I finished my custom aluminum dog crate for our Model S.
![]()
We got our MS in June 2013. One of the requirements was that it hold a crate for my German Shepherd Dog. I dont like driving around with a dog loose in the car. Ive built semi-custom crates for our other cars, but never one as nice or as elaborate as this one. My challenge was fitting a crate big enough for a GSD in the back of the Tesla. I built a number of mock ups out of foam core until I finally came up with one that works and seemed practical. Two years later its done.

AudubonB Very nicely done, DS. What are the two tabs on the center top? In car pix only - not when on workbench.
Dec 23, 2015
DSurber Pieces of foam to protect the window. There's only about a cm between the crate and the glass. If I hit a bump or something I don't want the hard metal corner hitting the glass. Instead the foam should cushion the hit. I hope.
Dec 23, 2015
Cyclone How stable is it? I would be worried about it shifting and damaging the hatch glass.
Dec 23, 2015
DSurber So far, not a problem. I do intend to strap it to the seat back latch points, but haven't figured out the best way to do that yet. Hence the foam mentioned in my previous reply.

gerti These are Keeper (in the back) and LiLo:
![]()
They love riding in the Tesla! We found the first dog hairs in our car as we were picking it up... Keeper went through a similar ordeal as Bo (who I hope is improving daily!). Fluke accident about a year ago, hyperextended tendons. They fused a joint in his right front, and added a plate. Keeper broke that plate, so they replaced it. Broke screws on that plate, so they replaced them and he has been wearing and additional brace since. The bone is stable enough that they were able to remove the plate a few weeks ago.
Despite all those trips to the vet, Keeper still gets very excited when we go for a ride!
Dec 23, 2015
kf93 Can someone with an S check and see if this crate will fit in the back of the vehicle with the second row seats up from the dimensions? I doubt it will, right now it takes up about the entire volume of our 5 series wagon cargo area, and I think the wagon is a lot taller towards the end of the car than the model S is. We currently have our dog ride in the crate and swap it back and forth between the two cars, but very soon the 5 series wagon is probably going to be replaced with a model S and I'll either need to fit the crate in there or find some other solution to keep everyone safe. gerti Exactly, glad to hear he is "howling good"!
As far as the hair is concerned, no matter how careful you are, if you own malamutes you will always carry a piece of them (in form of some hairs) wherever you go! So near the end of our new owner intro my wife and I simultaneously noticed some dog hair (obviously transfer from our clothes) in our not-yet-signed-for car... We thought it was funny, a tell-tale of things to come.
First Tesla, Titanium Metallic 85D with all extras except third-row seats. Joins a VW CC in the garage, though the CC doesn't get moved much lately... We just like driving the Tesla too much (and the CC really is a fun car to drive, as far as ICE cars go).
Here it is at the supercharger in Hinckley, MN (yes, both dogs are in the back, hence the crappy parking job to make it easier for the invalid boy to get in and out):

Dec 24, 2015

Dec 25, 2015
GreenT Silly question #2 for this thread ... what do you call your dogs ... when calling them?
Au and bo?After all dogs names are usually mono syllabic or two at most. You have 3 and 4!

Dec 25, 2015
Zybane I'm pretty sure he means that by parking sideways, there is plenty of room behind the trunk to open and get the dogs in.
Dec 25, 2015
Cyclone Ahhh. That makes more sense. Thank you.
Dec 25, 2015
gerti Exactly. Brand-new supercharger (at that time) in Hinkley MN, opened just 6 days prior. It had rained all day and the area behind the concrete was soaked. Keeper is a big dog (>100lbs) and wearing a brace he needs help in and out to ease the load on that hand (though he certainly will jump in an out if you are not quick enough!). So parking sideways gave more room to maneuver behind the trunk. No shortage of parking or other Teslas around either day we were there. It was a gun road trip, dogs and us had a great time.

Cyclone For those of with larger breeds, do you use the trunk space with the rear seats up or down? Our 94 lb black lab-dane mix hasn't ridden in the S yet, but I want to be prepared with the right covering. I have thought about a dog harness that attaches to the seatbelt (I thought I saw that in this thread, but not seeing it right now), but then I have to be really careful with the leather. Thought I would see what you all have been doing. Some of the photos look like labs or retrievers in the trunk area, but I am not sure if they were perhaps younger/smaller ones back there. Thanks!
May 2, 2016
johnnyS The glass in the rear is kind of low for our golden so we usually fold one side of the rear seats down.
May 2, 2016
gerti Our slightly over 100 lbs Alaskan Malamute male rides in the trunk with the seat up (see post #145 in this thread). Initially that was for our sanity, as in the car before he'd stick his head between ours and do his "heavy breathing and drooling" routine, which was very annoying... We did not think it would work out. Turns out he loves it. It is his own private den, he can get up and look out front, side and back, and keeps his sister at bay. He really likes riding in the car and going places.
Obviously there is hair everywhere in the trunk, I never found a convenient way of protecting the sides. The heavy weathertech-style trunk mat works great for the floor though.
May 4, 2016
jerjozwik only thing i would add to the trunk dog method is here in los angeles the back window lets in a LOT of heat, even with UV tint it can get very warm back there and AC on full blast does not really do anything. our rear seat hammock is on the way.

BertL IMHO, placing big dogs in the trunk area can be problematic -- airflow that most dogs prefer is a challenge in the rear seat anyway, let alone getting it into the trunk area up over our high back headrests. Of course, the trunk then also has all that glass to compound the possible heat challenge. For my 65lb Golden, if I was insistent upon using the trunk area for her, I'd only do it with the rear seats down for those reasons and have to then cover that very large area. ...instead, several of us put our larger dogs in the back seat which is covered to protect the leather (a number of options from a sling-type device to a custom Canine Protector which I have had now in 3 different vehicles including my MS -- read upthread), and easily provides you an option to fasten a harness to one of the 3 seatbelt latches if that's what you also want to do.

I am really no fan of using the back seats. I currently have a sedan and have been leaving her on the back seats which I really hate. I hate having to reapply the seat cover every time I have to bring her somewhere. Also she is very hyper and hard to control (still a puppy). Also I am not sure it is very safe.
Will she comfortably fit in the trunk area?
Jun 12, 2016
MarkS22 We have a 65 pound Golden. She fits fine in the trunk area. She can sit, stand, and lay down with plenty of room. I put the Tesla cargo liner down, then a fabric liner that not only protects the walls and seatbacks, but has a foldable lip that protects the car when the dog is climbing in and out. (The fabric liner with walls is a must because she sheds a lot.)
Best of all, the rear footwell and frunk are still available for storage without taking up any room.
