Anyone else get this email, here's a snippet

There's more to it, basically NO GUARANTEE they can make it in time, but would try. I'm all for it!!!

    I got the email, too!

This is the part where they get my hopes up for a 2012 delivery after I've just about managed to accept that it's going to be the end of January 2013!

Oh well, it still put a massive smile on my face -->

I haven't responded to an email so fast, as I did on this one. Told them I'd pickup at the factory if it's easier, just name the date, time and location. Ha! I guess I should start the penfed loan process just in case.

Ditto. I offered to bring them a duffle bag of cash if it would make delivery happen sooner.

I got the email. I replied immediately.
I was expecting clicking the button to take me to MyTesla. I wasn't expecting it to just create an email to delivery with the subject of "yes". My email is forwarded, so I included my P6852 and my Reservation number. hopefully they can figure that out. I'll be interested to hear when people get the follow up emails asking about financing (or was I supposed to say that I'm paying cash in the body of the "yes" email?)

I'd be happy to sacrifice a day or two in delivery to get a 2013 rather than a 2012, since I think 2013s will have higher resale value. but I'd much prefer a Dec 31 delivery to a Feb 15 delivery.

I still don't see how I could be in the running to get my P6852 in December when kroneal is still waiting for his sig.

I just got the email a moment ago and replied immediately. I'm P957, and I'm in Texas.

I will be a little peeved if they feed the California pipeline due to the convenience of delivery in order to pad their quarterly stats. It wouldn't be that big deal if it was P1,200, but P6800+ would be very annoying. Just being honest, and no offense to the later # Californians who got the email. I'm looking forward to the car AND the 2012 tax credit.

I got the email, too. I'm #6703, and I live in Indiana! This might be more about 85kW cars than anything else. But yeah, I'm a bit excited to say the least.

85kWh is the deciding factor. I got nothing (P1440 in bay area)
  • Dec 6, 2012

I'm thinking it's the 85kWh thing, as I'm in Oregon and I've seen both Performance and Non. I've seen several blues but several that are other colors.

Like I said before on another thread, while there is likely some constellation of commonalities in those who are getting cars "early" it's very unlikely that we'll ever be able to deduce what they are. Frankly, I'm just stoked that there's a chance.

Agreed Kip. Tesla has made it clear that 60s come after Jan 1, therefore no 60-future-owner should expect that email.

It makes me wonder if your chances increase if you're paying cash and not trading in a vehicle, since they specifically addressed those two questions in the email. At any rate, I'd hate to be the employee responsible for checking the [emailprotected] address right about now!!

Any idea on whether the EV tax credit will increase in 2013? I mean I realize that Fiscal cliff, nobody knows, etc, etc, but I recall that the proposed budgets had it go up to $10k.... or I could just press the button.

I got the email too and I opted in. Unfortunately I have to sell two cars to get the money for the down payment but I can raid the liquid funds to cover it until the cars are sold.

This could be the greatest Christmas gift ever.

Funny story: My wife said "its a good thing you bought my Christmas gift already since you would probably cheap out" :) She is correct...;-)
  • Dec 6, 2012

At this stage they want to deliver as many cars as possible to those able and willing to pony up the cash or financing this year. I think those questions are purely related to get the ball rolling as the trade in process may be a bit more cumbersome.

+1 on the [emailprotected] email account. Someone's iphone is about to explode.
  • Dec 6, 2012
    PattyChuck
I attribute this to the same argument of, "Why should I buy [insert cutting-edge technology] now, when the next update will probably bring [insert marginally-desired upgrade]?"

One could argue, albeit maybe not very well, that there's always a chance the tax credit will decrease to $5K.

Oh, just take the Red Pill, and find out how deep the rabbit hole goes!!!

Ok, a problem here...any other Canadian reservation holders receive this email?

Gah . . . got the e-mail . . . haven't even called Solar City back after my vacation to look into setting things up here, measured garage versus car size, etc. So I'm not ready, but . . . wow, I'd love to ditch my old car. Which I haven't figured out what to do with yet. Looking at Feb/Mar, I really wasn't thinking about this kinda stuff! But I'd love to get it . . . shoot. My other half just woke up, so I guess it's time to talk. ;-)

Coincidentally, I was at my credit union today and happened to ask about timing on getting a loan. I can get it approved the same day, and even if I'm worried about issues or delays, a couple of weeks is plenty o' time he said. He also gave me an idea of the two factors (credit score and monthly-payment-versus-monthly-salary) that would affect getting approved--something I'd just thought about--and I should be fine there.

So . . . damn, I'm nervous but kinda want to say yes. Probably too late (6000 other people just clicked YES, right?). ;-) But hopefully I'll do that soon anyway.

    - - - Updated - - -

Huh? I got: "Financing can be done through our Tesla partner, Wells Fargo, or through your own local bank or credit union. In many states trade-ins can be handled through our delivery process as well." So no problema, methinks. I'm certainly not taking Wells Fargo's rates (they may compare well to banks, but not to my credit union). ;-)

Needless to say, the more of us responding yes, the less likely this will materialize. Given where they are at in production and today's date, it seems very unlikely the majority of us who have been contacted will actually see a car this month.

^This. So much this. Five pages of replies, and no one has said "No" yet. This has been an emotional roller coaster, to say the least! My confidence level of rocketing up the delivery window has gotten pretty grim. A co-worker of mine, who actually might be more excited about this car than I, even bet me a dollar I'd have the car in the drive by 1/1/13. I told him if that happened, he could even have the first drive!

P6286. Had to say NO, as I managed to pay up all the taxes I would have owed in 2012 since I was given a Jan/Feb delivery. Thus, there would not have been a tax credit to use this year. Oh well, you stay alert you lose. I just hope those moving ahead of me in 2012 don't push me further back on delivery.

The big gamble is what will Congress do with the 2013 tax credit? Obama proposed a $10k credit, but I think the GOP will want to kill it, in my opinion, or at least significantly reduce it. This is a big deal folks.

The one day I leave my phone in my work pants after getting home from work. I just read the email, got it at 7:01 ET. Trying to convince the wifey that Dec is the way to go. It does make ad-velorum tax a little more difficult in GA. I really wanted my car mid March, but if I get it in Dec I get all my rebates in March 2012 which would be awesome.

I think I am just going to press the get it now button and work on the wife later!

Just in case anyone is in the same position as me...

I've been farting around trying to decide on colors (leather and paint) since I got the finalize email just before Thanksgiving. When I saw this thread, I emailed my DS (Walter) asking that if I finalized on an 85 with air, would I get the email? He answered within about 5 minutes (as usual!), saying that boat had probably sailed, so I'm likely looking at February(ish).

I'm not actually too sad, it would have been a lot to get organized and I'm out of town for a few days, but it's still great to here they're obviously pushing things along at some speed.

Congrats to all of those now likely to get their cars this side of Christmas, that's the bestest present ever!
  • Dec 6, 2012

I've been thinking about who might be getting this email and I think that the configuration is only part of the requirement (i.e. you've gotta be an 85kWh w/air suspension). I'm also wondering if you need to live in an area where Tesla will have an available delivery specialist sometime this month. Think about it, it makes sense for them to see where they have delivery slots available and make those cars first. Or, put another way, it makes less sense to build a car with a lower number that they know will have to sit at the factory or at a service center for several weeks while they wait for a delivery specialist to become available. Tesla needs to deliver as many cars this year, not only to make as much money as possible, but also to have the positive PR.

Anywho, I'm just speculating (because "speculating" sounds better than "pulling stuff out of my ass").
  • Dec 6, 2012

Apparently, we can take either ad valorem *or* title tax route if we buy in December.
  • Dec 6, 2012
    dsmith2189
Not sure about the delivery specialist speculation. I got the email and i'm in Hawaii. They don't have the service center open yet. (don't even know where they will put it.) and delivery here is more complex because the car has to be shipped by boat.

But if I understand correctly before March 1 you have to pay 1st year ad-velorum and sales tax, and then get a waiver for the 'title tax' which means you pay a bit more with the 1st year ad-velourm (I live in Cobb so less sales tax) and your sales tax, even if it is more than the 6.5% title tax. But it isn't really clear on any of the webpages that I have seen.

I don't understand. Probably I just don't get how the tax credit works. . . . I've Google'd and read about it in the past (and just now) and still don't get why you had to say no.

    gg_got_a_tesla
I'm happy for you lucky blokes! Really! :)

Just wondering though: for many of you with higher sequence numbers who might have been expecting March or later deliveries before, does clicking Yes change your expectations from hereon? So, if you still miss the 2012 boat (coz' it's not guaranteed), would you now expect nay, demand a January or a February delivery at the latest?

We poor cousins with 60 orders are fretting over here. :)

    And here's the link:
    http://www.irs.gov/Businesses/Plug-In-Electric-Vehicle-Credit-%28IRC-30-and-IRC-30D%29

It says very clearly that the funky golf-cart 3-wheeled things they stopped after Jan 1, 2012. For our cars, it is a qualified Motor Vehicle. $417 for every kWh in battery storage, to a maximum of $7500 with a base of $2500. It was last updated August of this year. Quit worrying.

Just one quick comment about the fact that almost no one here has opted for delivery in 2013. This forum is a self-selecting group of enthusiasts who chose to waste... err... spend their time discussing Tesla vehicles. The point is that I doubt that we're entirely representative of the Model S reservation population as a whole.

    - - - Updated - - -

Yeah, the fact that someone got the email in Hawaii pretty much deflated that theory.
  • Dec 6, 2012

Well, I emailed that while I have no particular need to receive in December, I would like to keep the end of my delivery window in January.
  • Dec 6, 2012
    dsmith2189
to be realistic, they would have to be loading the car on the ship right now for me to get it by Dec 31.
and that's not going to happen for many reasons. (is the dock workers strike over?)
  • Dec 6, 2012
    PattyChuck
My original delivery window is Feb/Mar. I received the email about getting the car early, and I clicked Yes. It's clear this is a desire by the factory to ride the ramp-up wave and build as many 85kW vehicles as possible. I would only have the expectation of an early delivery if Tesla told me it was a sure thing. If tomorrow, I receive an email that says, "Sorry, all the early December spots filled up, you won't get your car until the original timeframe of Feb/Mar," I'd be totally cool with that. I think Tesla has a pretty good handle on their manufacturing capabilities, but the unknown quantity, the thing they really have little control over, is the stamp from the Feds that they can begin delivering 60kW vehicles.
  • Dec 6, 2012
    PureAmps
Not really, especially after reading how many emails were sent out. My initial reaction to the email was they were trying to cram in as many deliveries as possible before the end of the year by selecting owners who didn't need financing or require trade-ins. Also given the logistics of delivery and the holiday season, I had assumed the were primarily targeting people who would take factory delivery. That is obviously not the case. So, while I'm hopeful of a December/January delivery. I won't be too upset as long as I receive the car within my original Feb/Mar delivery window, because I've already planned a road trip for April. :)

The biggest advantage of a December delivery is that I will get back hours of time that would have otherwise been spent checking for updates on the TMC delivery threads in Jan/Feb/Mar. ;)

I believe you're misunderstanding the tax rebate. The crucial amount is total liability; how much you paid during the year doesn't affect it. If you paid, e.g., your total liability of $10K during the year you'd qualify, and get a $7,500 rebate check.
  • Dec 7, 2012
    spatterso911
I clicked "No" as I have too much going on this month and never counted on receiving a car in December. I really planned on receiving in Feb-March. I now have a garage project in full swing, no plugs as of yet, and a car I need to get rid of. I think I can still wait a little longer, despite every fiber in my body screaming for me to click the "Hell Yes!" button!
  • Dec 7, 2012
    HFh
I agree it's unclear. The biggest thing for me is that the sales tax is on the price you pay and the title tax is on the value of the car (so a trade-in doesn't help). I'd concluded that I'd be better off with title tax... but because I wasn't expecting delivery until March, I hadn't given it a lot of thought.

I am said friend with the 40xx number. I am basically excited because I live down the street from Arnold Panz so I don't have to watch him drive by my house in his Model S anymore. I specifically told them I wanted the car in December or March not really in between. I am really worried about a Jan 2 delivery. I feel fine pushing it to 2012, because I get my tax rebate in March. But if I get it in Jan I'll be rushing my purchase, I won't be exactly where I want to be financially, 240VAC outlet wise, taking time to sell my car. So we will see.

Res. 8040 in Bay Area. I asked if I changed to 85kWh (from 60) and took factory delivery if I'd have a chance at delivery this year.

Was told that even if I were able to change my order it would be unlikely.
  • Dec 7, 2012
    gg_got_a_tesla
GasDoc, yes, I dabbled with that idea too but, was told the same by Tesla that I'd most likely spill over into January anyway.

A switch to 85 may not really be worth it if, presumably, the 60 serves your range needs by any math that you may have used in the past - the EPA's actual 208 mile rating for the 60 pack is better than almost all estimates.

GG -- hold fast to your decision on the 60 kWh. I've been driving for over a month and never get my range below 100, and I am sometimes driving quite a lot each day. Other than inter-city driving, I really couldn't envision needing more than the 60 kWh battery for around town driving.

Yes, Josh, in hindsight, it almost appears as if Tesla was "compelled" to put out the 85 pack to prove the naysayers wrong with that magical 300 mile figure (and then the Perf for the driving dynamics) but, the 60 appears to be a sweet spot that fits a lot more driving profiles. And, even for intercity driving, it appears that I can, in theory, make SF-LA on one supercharge alone or with a brief second supercharge.

Back on topic here, congrats to those who'll eventually make it into the 2012 production (and more importantly, delivery) window!

GG, not to mention since you've been grandfathered into the supercharger access, come Jan 1 the sticker price on your model just went up $4500.

This is the first I'd heard of grandfathered supercharger access... how does that happen?
  • Dec 7, 2012
    SteveH
At first the website indicated that the 60kWh car has supercharging included. At the very least there was a lot of ambiguity. If you finalized a 60kWh car before they clarified that and formally announced the $2000 supercharging price for 60s then you get it for free.

    Has anyone been contacted yet?

Shortly in the real world = within a few days
Shortly on this forum = Ack, it's been hours already and I haven't heard back!!!!

I assume as soon as anybody gets another email it will be posted instantaneously.

    Yes, I'm inpatient. :)

    D'oh!

Dang. If I'd been invited to finalize at that time, I would've gone with the 60kWh option. I only decided later to go up to 85kWh, and it was largely because of the $2k cost for supercharger access with the 60kWh car.

I guess I can take solace in the fact that I'll now likely get my car sooner thanks to the 85kWh and Active Air Suspension.

I just spoke the a Tesla representative regarding the early delivery. Here is the deal:

    1. The car will be finalized before the end of the year, paperwork completed and "sold" to the buyer.

    2. The car will be delivered as soon as "transportation can be arranged". This may extend into the middle of January, according to the representative

    3. The car would be shipped "directly from Tesla to you on an 18 wheeler" according to the representative

    4. The delivery specialist would call and arrange a time to come out and go over everything.

The car will be delivered as a 2012 model.

Essentially this would guarantee that one could take advantage of the $7500 tax incentive for 2012.

There was no guarantee that the car would arrive before December 31, 2012.

It would seem, then, that they (or I suppose this forum) misunderstands the requirements for the $7500 tax credit. Everything I've read shows that the car must be put in service (i.e. actually being driven around by the owner) before the end of 2012. That being the case, having it on a truck on it's way from the factory doesn't cut it.

Well, TMC, am I missing something?

I think the true motivation here might be to maximize 2012 Q4 sales figures rather than get the buyers their 2012 tax credit.

That appears to be the common wisdom, but if you look at the IRS instructions for the credit, what it actually says is:

"The vehicle must be acquired for use or lease and not for resale. Additionally, the original use of the vehicle must commence with the taxpayer and the vehicle must be used predominantly in the United States. For purposes of the 30D credit, a vehicle is not considered acquired prior to the time when title to the vehicle passes to the taxpayer under state law."

Basically what counts is how your individual state determines when you take title. In California, that date is the date in which Tesla mails the forms to the DMV.

After receiving the "December Delivery is Available" email I immediately replied with "Yes, 2012 please." Just now when I logged into "My Tesla" the DELIVERY button lit up for me and I filled out my info. The estimate says Dec 21 to Jan 4.

I guess next step is a VIN and a call from my delivery specialist? Exciting times.

"Delivery" button was there for me, range was Dec. 15 - Dec. 31.

Fingers crossed that it arrives before Dec. 22. My pig-headed relatives will be visiting that weekend, and they're totally against electric vehicles (a wide and expensive collection of gas-guzzling sports cars/hummers). I would love nothing more than to take them for test drives...

Oh, and I also just lost $5 to a coworker.

Call me crazy, but I ended up deferring for a couple of reasons! For the rare few that deferred delivery to 2013 , does any one know if the original delivery window still gets moved up in 2013? I've emailed Tesla, but no answer as of yet.

    no button for me.

Hopefully there won't be too many other times.

It's a credit, methinks, but yes, this was how I thought it worked--much like the credit I get for homeowner insurance fully counts even if it's the only reason I get a refund. Whew!

OMG, I hate to make you indignanter (is that a word?), but: I logged in a little bit ago for another reason and didn't look to see where these buttons were--wasn't looking. I just logged in again and there's a freaking delivery button...might've been there 20 minutes ago but I didn't see it.

My #'s higher than yours so if you had the e-mail and clicked yes, I recommend logging in again and then (in My Tesla) refreshing the page just to make sure. My config's diff from yours (brown, air, no perf, pano, cloth seats, stock wheels, tech, parcel, HPWC, twin chargers), but if you got the e-mail (did you?) then maybe it's just something tedious where they have a lot of e-mails to go through...or maybe response order was the critical factor. (But I didn't reply till later than many).

I figured there'd be an e-mail (one way or another) in a few days, so I've been checking my e-mail every 5 seconds to make sure I didn't miss it. ;-) 'Cuz, you know, with no promise of timeframe, clearly they meant they'd e-mail today, right?

Anyway, sorry but I'll cross my fingers you have the button soon!

I got a call from a very nice delivery specialist and I also had the delivery button in my garage. I have the same window of 15 Dec - 31 Dec as others on the forum. There is no way I could be more excited right now. This will be one HELL of a Christmas gift...belated or not.

I have an electrician to come out to set my garage up for the car and I have gotten financing lined up through Navy Federal at 1.79% for 60 months. Now I just have to sell my cars.

Wow, at P4996 I went from getting hints that I was tantalizingly close to a 2012 delivery, to being passed by people 2-, 3- or even 4,000 in sequence behind me. What gives? I wonder if the title-issuance rules are different in PA, or if there was a run on Obeche Gloss, or what? I will probably never know. And now I know just a tiny sliver of what it felt like to be one of the Last of the Sig-hicans!

Nonetheless, so excited to see so many people getting delivery promises for year-end, or shortly thereafter. Time to buy more stock, perhaps???
