boofagle It's amazing what a good designer can do given similar monetary constraints. One looks like a $35,000 car. The other looks triple that. The Bolt looks like it's made out of plastic and the 3 looks like it's made out of sex.
Mar 31, 2016
Xminus6 I'll defer to those of you who have had a car with that configuration. I've only driven a Mini on a test drive.
I think perhaps the plan is to have a very extensive HUD as an option with a tech package and leave the dash on the screen for the cheaper version. It would save a lot of money over a traditional dash or a digital one like on the current cars.
Mar 31, 2016
ljbad4life Mini coopers have the speedometer in the center of the dash. Prius has it the center as well, its closer to the windshield, but it's still the center. I don't see the issue with it here in the Model 3
Mar 31, 2016
Model S M.D. I agree about center speedometers being annoying. I drove a Prius before my Model S and I really hated it...
Mar 31, 2016
erthquake I friggen love that look. That's the color I'm going to get.
Mar 31, 2016
Brad_NC Yes, please drop your Model 3 reservation and buy a Model S... one less person possibly in front of me in line.

Mar 31, 2016
erthquake I suspect that this might be one of the things that Musk tweeted will evolve.

No2DinosaurFuel Alright I'm going to pull a donald trump here. "After I study the subject more... "
After looking at more pictures, here are my thoughts on the exterior looks. This way you guys know where my dislikes of the concept is coming from. Keep in mind the tesla guy said this is pretty close to the final version so I am not sure how much they will tweak before release. I suspect they are more focus on getting the factory tooled up for the Model 3 than making the tweaks to make it look better.
Front view: Definitely needs to change.
Front side view: Please get rid of those mock-Porsche look.
Rear view: OK, not bad can improve.
Rear side view: OK, but can be better.
Sides view: Leave alone.
Top front down view: Please get rid of those mock-Porsche look.
Top rear down: Generic, but most likely OK, no one is going to see it at this angle anyways.
Mar 31, 2016
tga A HUD would be kickass. The Mini has a tach in front of the driver with a multi-purpose trip computer display. I usually leave it set as a digital speedo so I'm not constantly looking to the right.
Mar 31, 2016
shrspeedblade It looks almost a little "Porschey" to me, and I like it! In production I'd better have a display in front of me and not just in the center (ie Prius, Cooper) though! OK, ok I'll settle for a HUD.
Mar 31, 2016
jame521 yes, center dash speedos are annoying.. i presume a HUD might be in store... I am confident though, that they will figure it out.
Mar 31, 2016
tga I (mostly) like the exterior. But the pushed in, flat nose just looks weird in a direct, front-on view. I looks like the car ran into something.
EDIT - won't stop me from buying, though.
Mar 31, 2016
Model S M.D. Haha fair enough. Just my initial response (my previous car was a Prius). This car blows everything out of the water in the same price range, no question about it. We're just mincing meat here... Totally agree the Model 3 looks like a baby Panamera upfront (a big compliment!)
Mar 31, 2016
dennis IMO Tesla just did their best car/launch event ever:
1. Communication to owners prior to the event were frequent, clear and mostly consistent.
2. Elon showed up on time!
3. Franz did a great job of evoking Tesla family design cues: roadster nose, model S silhouette and Model X roofline/glass. Also very nice that Franz was the one to introduce Elon.
4. The entire build up to the event was epic. Allowing reservations to be made before the reveal creating big lines at the stores was unheard of previously in the car industry. This led to being able to announce 115,000 reservations at the event for a product no one had seen!
Kudos to Tesla. Now please just hunker down and deliver this awesome machine by the end of 2017 !
Mar 31, 2016
cashie Agree, please deliver these on time.....
Mar 31, 2016
Ocelot It might of got lost in the shuffle, but was wondering does anybody know if there is apossibility of sunroof with the large sloping appearing glass?
Mar 31, 2016
nwdiver Home run hit... what an amazing day! I'd say ~97% of comments have been positive. Pretty much everything has exceeded my expectations. Congratulations to the Tesla Team on a lot of hard work and a job well done. This share holder and owner is proud

Mar 31, 2016
neroden I expect from previous experience that the exterior shape will not change at all. The interior could change a lot.
Mar 31, 2016
neroden Ditto the Model S. Model S prototype had a floating screen and it went away in the production version.
Mar 31, 2016
neroden Heh.
No. Not happening. The people who dream about autonomous cars are still fantasizing. Try having one drive across a grass parking lot -- no chance.
Mar 31, 2016
1208 Apologies for not going through whole thread. The instrument cluster, eg Speedometer is on the top left of the screen, you can see it during one of the videos. Better than the dashboard which is hard to see behind the wheel.
Mar 31, 2016
SageBrush I'm really, really happy with the reveal. My afternoon thoughts of keeping the BMW i3 and new Prius Plug-in in the running are pretty much gone.
Random thoughts, but first disclaimers:
I am not a car guy. At all
I care very little about 'performance.'
It is a rare American who has a sense of design. Mostly they do retro, padded, black and gilded.
I am blown away by the 35k USD for that car. Amazing vision and tech progress from Tesla
- The panoramic roof is brilliant in too many ways to count
- Goodbye, grill. Don't let the door hit you on the way out
- I love minimalist, functional design. Way to go Tesla! Now if only it was a bit warmer I would be in heaven.
- If all else in the Tesla was ICEy and equal, it would still be a car I want to buy for the safety features.

ggnykk maybe they will use hologram or projection for instrument panel to make it truly sci-fi. Maybe even wearing things like Microsoft Hololens to avoid using hologram or projection.
Apr 1, 2016
yesup I think there is almost zero chance of that happening. They remove the instrument panel on purpose to keep the cost down, and to allow more forward positioning of the front seats. If you listen to the video, the single screen design is a "feature" of the Model 3.
As for HUD, the dashboard on the prototypes are not provisioned for that. So I would not keep the hope high.
Since there is no HUD for Model S or Model X, they cannot reuse parts, so I am doubtful that they would implement for Model 3.
Apr 1, 2016
clydetf HUD and TOPVIEW are the options I miss most in my Model S
Apr 1, 2016
jkliu47 Yes it has different looking door handles than the other M3's (with hockey stick handles). Noticed in one of the videos that they work by pressing on one end with thumb to flip out the handle then pull to open. With the 'hockey stick' handles of the other M3's would they have reversed handles to accommodate right hand pulls?

Marcos While I'm reserving judgement on whether it's better or not until I get to see it in the flesh, the dashboard on my X is not hard to see behind the steering wheel. In fact, I carefully adjusted the steering wheel so that I had a perfect view to the instrument cluster behind it.
That said, I still make HUGE use of my center screen for most things. So while i'd prefer to have the instrument cluster, I suspect that I'd learn to live without it if I had to.
Apr 1, 2016
Garlan Garner I don't know about anyone else, but I can't help but to visualize the BMW X4 whenever I look at the profile of the Model3.
The BMW has the abrupt stop at the back. Its a hatchback/trunk short nose vehicle just like the Model 3.
Does anyone have the ability to just put up the profile of a Model 3 and the BMWX4?
Or even the BMW X6 for that matter.

butchmank9 I'll bet that there is a HUD becuase Elon did say he wanted to save some things for later. I hope LOL
Apr 1, 2016
Nozferat I am seriously underwhelmed by this design.
It looks like the Model S...an already excruciatingly outdated looking car IMO...that's been thrown into a dryer and shrunk.
EV's need more flair and style...this thing looks just too blah and bland.
I know everyone is wetting their panties about this car and while I'm sure the tech and price points are fantastic, the exterior design...to me...is such a big let down. Perhaps it'll look better in real life but as it is from the images, it's just nothing special at all.
Look at the Nissan Sway concept to get an idea of how a future EV replacement should and could be....(i.e for the Leaf of course).
The Model 3 just looks so pedestrian and ordinary.
Apr 1, 2016
Red Sage I do believe the Model ? is beautiful. I love the Panoramic Windshield front & rear. It looks best from the side, 3/4 rear, and rear. I had expected it to be a bit more cab forward in design, though... I find it disappointing that it is a Notchback, though access through the Trunk seems fine. There seems to be fitted luggage in the Frunk.
I will continue to await the arrival of a Coupe. Hopefully that will have both Falcon Wing Doors, and a Liftback. Oh, and a front end from Ferrari instead of Porsche.
Apr 1, 2016
engle In my Model X, I set it so I hear a tone whenever I exceed 10 miles over the speed limit, which happens a lot with a P90D! The setting is variable. I never glance at the speedometer driving on the freeway, only the hi-definition rear-view camera display, and the Google-based navigation display if driving in an unfamiliar area. I have both split-screened on the center touchscreen, with the rear-view camera on top. I do that since with a 7-seat Model X you can't see much out the rear view mirror. The camera view is far superior in any event once you get used to it.
The Model ? will be able to drive itself on the freeway just like its big brothers the S and X if you order the anticipated "Autopilot Convenience Features" option, which costs $2,500 on the X and hopefully will be less on Model ? since the engineering has already been paid for. You just set the maximum speed and the car does the rest!
Note the distinction that only the "Autopilot Safety Features" are included in the base Model ?, from what I understand.
PS. The Model X "Big Sky" all glass panoramic roof for the front passengers tint is dark enough even under bright California sun, IMHO. I expect the same for Model ?, which will bring this driving experience to the back seat passengers, as well. Just be sure you have no or a very low deductible on your glass coverage and don't follow large dirt trucks too closely!
Apr 1, 2016
Big-Al I am a Mini owner too and I fully agree with you. I never look at the speedometer in the center console; it takes your attention from the road The best location is in front of the driver, behind the steering wheel.. I have to think that the final version of the Model 3 will have an instrument cluster in front of the driver.
Apr 2, 2016
vortexz Real live footage in the wild

Apr 2, 2016

Apr 2, 2016
BriansTesla I think this is a sign of what driving will be like in the future. Even if you are doing the driving, you won't need to watch the gauges at all. The car takes care of all that for you.
Apr 2, 2016
M67v I don't really like the front, but the side profile and rear end look nice.
Apr 2, 2016
Darren F As a Scion xB driver I disagree. I have no issues with my center mounted gauges.
Apr 2, 2016
DougH Agree 100%, hopefully they will change it up a little. It also looks really small inside of the car.
Apr 2, 2016
int32_t This is the wrong forum on which to say Tesla vehicles are ugly! Just thought I'd put that out there.
Beauty is entirely subjective and 100% independent of the cost of the item said to be beautiful. Just because something is expensive doesn't mean it's ugly ...
Personally I think the Model 3 looks like a cool combination of a Roadster front (with slight Model X undertones) and a Model S body outline and rear.
Teslas don't have gears for anybody to change, not even the car, thankfully. The Model 3 will be quicker than most ICEs out there as a result ...
Apr 2, 2016
SageBrush Would someone please twist EM's arm into disclosing the tyre RR, car Cd, and weight ?
Apr 3, 2016
jame521 well.. I don't see anything wrong with people posting their negative opinions on the aesthetics of the model 3.... Whether perty or not, the one thing you cannot say is that the model 3 looks 'cheap' for the price... They certainly didn't try to make it look more primitive, like basically all other manufacturers do, in order to distinguish it from its more expensive peers.. It looks like a Tesla through and through.
Apr 3, 2016
SageBrush Just as valuable as the opposite.
My request from all though is to distinguish personal opinion from fact:
I think the car is [ ] -- is fine
The car is [ ] -- is not

Why would you even make a TMC account if you don't like Tesla.
I feel somewhat mad that a guy who doesn't truly appreciate Tesla gets to own one and I don't.
Apr 4, 2016
int32_t Just ask on Twitter. He was answering a bunch of questions earlier ...

Canuck From the pictures, I like the look of Model 3 better than the Model S. Maybe if I saw it in person that would change though.
Apr 4, 2016
eisbock Probably won't get the weight because the body construction and battery sizes have not been disclosed, but Elon did say the goal for Cd was .21. I'd assume they're pretty close to that now.
Apr 4, 2016
