Big difference. Gotta shell out the big bucks if you want lane assist and the like.

Very nice interior and front end. Kudos for supercharging and autopilot. Not sure about the rear either, its approaching Prius territory!

Totally new UI for the touchscreen too. Looks very sleek, very modern. Better than what we have in the S :)

It's Autopilot _hardware_ standard, with the _safety features_ standard.
    Supercharging standard.
Base model will be 0-60 under 6 seconds; more powerful versions faster.
Best cargo capacity in its size class.

    Over 115,000 reservations so far.

Now I just need to wait until 2019 (I hope) until I can get one.

I have a hard time believing there's no instrument cluster...unless it's going to have a HUD. That would be amazing.

I'm not sold on the rear at all. Reminds me of the old BMW 318ti. It just feels lopped off. I'm not going to cancel my reservation just yet. A lot can change between now and the final production version.

Meh, I like the Model S more, as I was expecting. Its cool though, but doesn't captivate me like the S.

Touch screen is apparently not enormous, but 15" instead of 17"

Because it's the prototype I think they cut corners on the dashboard to make the unveiling. As it sits, the dashboard is probably not street legal. I expect the production display will be more incorporated into the dash and the dash will be more substantial.

Am I the only one who thinks this thing looks ugly? I mean the model S was sleek. The Model X was OK. I wont fault it since it's an SUV and SUVs are definitely never better looking than sedans. But this car is the worst of all. Even uglier than the Model X. I expected better from tesla.

Now I am seriously hoping they would change the exterior drastically on release date because I definitely don't want to be seen in one.

The Model 3 design is perfect for me. I saw in another thread that it has elements of the Roadster and Model X. That's exactly what I was thinking. The front trunk and headlights draw fro the Roadster heritage, and the nose is Model X.

It's low slung and sporty like the Roadster, and the small size says it can be tossed around corners with joy.

    I drive a Honda Civic. This Model 3 is a perfect replacement:D

Curious about the instrument panel.... the center LCD display is horizontal instead of vertical... but I don't see any instrument cluster screen in front of the driver. HUD display? I would think Elon would have made a big deal about that if true.

I don't think tesla thought this one through. Looks like the trunk will not allow the full opening due to the single piece of glass in the rear. I highly doubt the whole glass will move. Looking at the trunk, you might not have much room to put big things in there. Front tries to look like porsche. Definitely failed at doing that. The mission E is much better looking

The car is gorgeous! Front, rear, side - Everything! The only thing I don't like is the lack of a dash display in front of the steering wheel, but I'm sure that will change. Sorry GM, time to scrap the bolt and go back to the drawing board!! HAhhahahahaha!!!!!

It's that rear, too high to be sleek. And they added the micro spoiler just like someone mentioned BMW 318. A shooting break might have been a nicer rear, but the US is hatchback averse even though the S , S7, and others are hatchbacks

I think for what you are paying for the Model S and especially the Model X are both butt ugly. This model 3 is not going to win any beauty contests but its definitely compelling value. Assuming we can get the Federal credit (plus the California one where I live) what other car can you get for $25k that comes close? I just see these Teslas as boring appliances that will save me money on fueling costs for puttering around town. For real enjoyment I'll be driving an ICE car that howls and I get to change my own gears.
  • Mar 31, 2016
    Xminus6
Not sure why that's an assumption. If you watch the Periscope of the test drive the driver specifically talks about the speedometer being not he center console. This isn't Tesla's first car, so I'm not sure why they would completely forgo a instrument cluster at all in the reveal. If they were pressed for time I'm sure they could retrofit an instrument cluster from one of the other vehicles.

Home Run launch....and as we move closer to end '17 I'm sure front end, instrumentation, etc. will be refined. This is just an early look.

Hitting the $35K price target with AP & Supercharging along with a standard pano roof in an industry leading safe smaller car will make this a sellout before first ship date. Guaranteed.

I think the proportions are perfect, as for the styling, maybe that will change a little by the time of the release but I think it is pretty classic and will grow on a lot people who aren't sure yet.

I'm intrigued. For the moment I will leave it at that, especially remembering how much the Model S changed from prototype to production version. Of course, I am sure, the differences between the Model 3 prototype(s) (especially interior) and the production version will be more subtle than on the S, but still. Things might still change for the better or the worse.
As it stands, as I said, I am intrigued....positively that is :)

A centered instrument cluster has been done before in a production car. While I think it might end up with one in front of the driver there's no legal reason why they would have to put one there. Look up some pictures of the old Saturn Ion interior. Center cluster with nothing in front of the driver. I presume this makes it easier to adapt for RHD applications as well.

Right... Tesla didn't just spent YEARS designing this thing. They probably just mindlessly hacked something together late last week, "Crap, we need to reveal something next week! But don't give it any thought, it's not like we're betting the entire company on this car or something."

Obviously they thought it through. Whether it meets your needs or not remains to be seen once we get the production version. It's like the X. It's perfect for my needs because it's a people-hauler, not a cargo hauler. But for those who wanted folding seats, Tesla "didn't think it through." They can't design the perfect car for everyone, but this one clearly hit close enough. So much so, in fact, that I tried to find justification for a second car in our household. (I failed. One car is enough.)

    I love it!

That dark gray is just bad-ass, I might be getting the silver one though, red somehow doesn't work for me, interested in white also.

I'm surprised at center 'tunnel' in front, guess they needed space to put some internals.

Some angles need some getting used to, otherwise 10/10.

Now I wait for part two! And more pics and videos.

Some engineer (Three days before production begins): "Hey Mr. Musk, did you realize we can't open the trunk? It's one piece of glass!"
Elon: "Holy s**t young engineer, you're right! I can send people to space but I never thought about how to open the trunk!"

That flat dashboard is so symmetrical , it will be very good for audiophile sound reproduction as the two sides are near acoustic equals.

Can't open trunk? Never said anything about can't open trunk. I think you need to check your reading skills.

Wow!! The car is so beautiful. They went with 3 different designs with 3 different cars in span of few years while companies have been using the same front end for decades. Speaks a lot about the innovation of this company. Love the interior, again breakthrough work.

I'm glad it's not more hatchback-like than it is, but it's right on the line for me. Hatchbacks are so gross, I wish they'd figure something out with the design to go back in the typical sedan direction. I have no problem with the nose and lack of grill. I hope the center console goes away. My favorite thing about the S when I sat in it today was that I could get in and drop my purse right beside me instead of throwing it by my feet. I realize most of the people involved in production are never going to think of this, but it felt like a huge deal when I got in.

Now that I think of it, though, I don't remember seeing where cup holders were in the S.
  • Mar 31, 2016
    SCW-Greg
    Sure is beautiful.

They showed the early Model X (prototype) with a pseudo floating screen somewhat like this, but in the end, they just utilized the same Model S monitor layout. The real issue with a floating screen is durability. Kids will yank on it. Sudden stops and/or you end up bang into it... and then the next thing you know, you have a really expensive monitor dangling by wires sitting on your floor.

These cars are prototypes, and things will change.
  • Mar 31, 2016
    Kurt Foster
If you look at the Model X when they had prototypes, the screen looked like it was in mid-air, thats not the actual case with the finished product. My best guess is that they first REALLY focused on the exterior, then worried about interior nonsense in the short timeframe before they start producing it.

Ok., so it doesn't blow my skirt up in the styling area, but I understand the design constraints of providing headroom for five adults, with the shorter overall length. Can they work on the blunt front nose though. Where's the model X stylized logo/slit grill?
