Key Fob solutions part 2

    Key Chain Idea

Here is my latest attempt. I have used an 11mm ring in the fob, although a 10mm would likely also work and then hooked that ring to a small swivel attached to the key ring. Both the split ring and swivel are available on Amazon for about $3/100. (Note to self - Need to buy more Model S'). The swivel lines the fob up nicely with the keys.

I would like a credit card dimensioned fob that I could keep tucked in my wallet. That's the one thing I miss about my first Keyless Go car.

I've gotten the habit of hanging mine around my neck -- it's on a lanyard by itself so it never bumps up against other keys. It never goes in my pocket.

But do you have the cool Telsa lanyard?

I tore apart a nike fuelband to see if I could stick the internals in there. No go, but I'm sure some sort of sleeve could be fabricated for the internals to slide into. Kickstarter?

also, pete, my service center added a little keychain-like rope to my FOB, which I like, but I'd also jump in for one of yours!

Just plain black. I don't want to draw more attention to it than it does now.

    Waterproof key fob solution?

Hi - I saw the other key fob solutions thread, but it looks like that's about something different.

I like to kitesurf, which involves going out in the disgusting bay and ocean with nothing much but a wetsuit and a harness. Anybody have a good, as-small-as-possible, waterproof keyfob solution?

I've seen some cases like these:http://www.amazon.com/Waterproof-Container-Airtight-Money-Beach/dp/B002EDCS06 , which would work, but if anybody has a link to a specific product that is exactly the right size (so that it is less bulky when stashed under my wetsuit), that would be appreciated. And any other ideas would be nice as well.

I've never heard of waterproof pouches, but a quick google search shows that they do in fact exist. Anybody know if they are actually for reals 100% waterproof, or are they going to be like a ziploc bag which will leak 1 out of every 100 times and ruin the fob?

So far I guess my best, safest idea is to foodsaver vacuumseal one of the fobs (no, really), stash that in a waterproof box or pouch, wrap the cord around my neck or shoulder, and stuff it under a wetsuit.

Hopefully somebody has a better solution, like an exact Tesla Model S keyfob-shaped waterproof box that I can surgically implant into my forearm or something.

Mod note: The posts from pete's awesome Tesla key fob cover were moved to their own thread since it generated so much interest and will likely be sold to people at some point. There seems to be an issue with the server on where they actually went. Will try to get them restored and they should appear in this same section of the forum.

NOTE TO MODS: As part of the aborted move of the portion of the thread relating to Pete's product, this index on this thread seems to be jacked up too. It shows as being 17 pages long (assuming default page display size) for me, but you can't navigate past page 13...

We'll see what happens when I post this...

    Thanks! Definitely better pics.

OK, I kinda like that. So, is it completely enclosed? I.e. how do you put it in and how does it stay in? Is it zippered or something?

It has a opening in the back that it squeezes thru. You can kind of see it in the original pic that I posted (the second pic was of the back)

Thanks! Duh. I have images turned off on my forum settings, and didn't notice the limage links in your first post. i just saw the amazon link. makes sense. i actually think i like these better than the case logic ones (and the Tesla logo'd ones that Pete is making).

I'm in for 2 of these and will give someone else the chance to get one of Pete's first batch of 100. There doesn't seem to be a shortage of people interested in his anyways.

I've suggested some new colors for the fob holders, there's a poll here if anyone is interested. Please keep the comments over there, or on the For Sale thread, since this is now a 'product'.

suggestion: FOB with micro USB port

The key fob needs a micro USB port.

    - when plugged into a power source, the FOB battery is charged.
This will avoid getting lost in the woods with a drained FOB.

    - when plugged into any computer, laptop, or tablet, there will
be an option to install a software/navigate to a URL that controls your car
remotely via the web. The attached key fob serves as an authentication token.

    discuss.

    +1

    - should be able to be plugged into the car's USB ports
    - then it could also be used as a means of securely acquiring the log data.

If you're worried about a dead battery in the fob, keep a spare battery in the glove box.
  • Jun 26, 2013

That's exactly what I did. I figure I can unlock the car with the mobile app, then get in and change fob batteries.

A Leash for that mini-Tesla Fob

That hole is awkward for a wire ring, but that's because it is designed for a thread loop like the wrist straps for digital cameras and the like. Just search amazon for "camera wrist straps."

I used a needle threader, a piece of thread and similar strap as this, it pulled the strap through the hole pretty spiffy.

Thanks Al. I only have grey/red in stock at the moment, but I've got more stock coming in multiple colors (and a couple of designs) within a week or two. The Tesla ones look like a carbon copy of the Case logic design, at least from the photo. Mine are sized to the actual key fob, so are a slightly more snug/tailored fit, but, then again, I'm biased :)

Yes, the fob fits snugly into the case. Pete's fobs come in a variety of colors. Quite nice. If TM sold them they would probably be twice the price

I bought two of Pete's fob cases (red with black and black with red). I have used them both all of this month, and can attest that they are well made, work well, and are stylish. I do not carry any other keys, so they are perfect for me. I can tuck one into any convenient pocket without worrying about marring either the plastic or other pocket items such as my iPhone. They do come with a split keyring for those who need to carry keys. Highly recommended! And if you want to play Maverick [at least half of this forum probably won't get it], there is room for your $100 bill under the fob . . .

Moderator, please! I wrote a number of pages ago begging that we don't make this a commercial site for Pete's cases. Pete, great if you would help with that as well. I subscribe to this because i'm interested in *different* key fob solutions, not a zillion variations of the same approach, or a zillion endorsements/orders/etc. of Pete's solution.

    Tomas.

No offense intended but as I read it, this thread is intended to let everyone know of Key Fob Solutions. There have been many posts about different solutions. Some of these are generic and can be made of existing household items or converted USB covers from Amazon. A forum member, and model S owner, has come up with a valuable (IMO) solution for a fob cover and has recently modified (improved?) it. I believe it is OK to share that information on an open forum/thread like this one.

When I ordered a key fob cover from Pete before I asked to be placed on an email alert list if he came out with any new products or refinements to old ones. Today I received an email notifying me a new shipment of the fob covers have come in that have some changes/improvements. So, I am sharing that news with any other interested forum/thread members/viewers.

Again, sorry if you take offense or feel that sharing this news is inappropriate.

If you wear jeans the watch pocket under the belt is a perfect place for the KEY. If you can't find your KEY in the morning then you know exactly where it is: in the watch pocket of yesterday's jeans.

+1, though the rubber? inside the fabric can wear out.

I also use them in place of wire ties--we got a "ball" of them once at a sale once for $1.00 (must have been 30 of them).

Has anyone got a solution for a hard case for the keyfob? My wife has a tendency to accidentally press buttons on it while it's in her pocket and she's getting in or out of the car. I've had at least one phantom charge port opening I attribute to this, and it used to happen frequently with my old car. What I'd like is a nice, small, rigid case that prevents one from accidentally pressing the buttons, but it still fits in the pocket.

Anyone else have this problem and solve it?

I really like the rustic leather version. I have the earlier um, city version ;-)
Bothers me though that the car drawing is reversed from the way the fob best goes into the pocket.

Truth be told though, even though the car shape fob is kinda cool, the whole fob concept is a little annoying if it means the fobs are that large. I'd love to see the fob be much smaller, like stick of trident small, and flat as a credit card. I'd gladly lose the car likeness for that. Be happy for it to be securely put on a personal device too, like a watch or tied to phone, so long as it is implemented to use local networking, whether rfid, NFC, whatever - no dependency on a cell network, etc.

I agree. I've bought a number of covers from them (both on-line and at TMC Connect), including the distressed leather one pictured above and always come back to the silicone one. Simple and effective and quite durable too.

I actually wish the fobs had real rolling wheels like a real matchbox car! Then again, would they be 21s or 19s? :)

I got one of those today, in orange. Fits very well, looks to be indestructible. I had one of the Tesla black neoprene fob covers but it stretched and the fit was so loose that the fob fell out. Fortunately it fell out onto the floor of my Roadster and I found it (I keep the fob on the same key ring as my Roadster key).

Porsche does a range of key bands with a quick release clip. They fit the Tesla key very nicely. You just need to undo the internal retention bolt in the clip, thread the Nylon woven band through the key and put it all back together. The Nylon band is slightly too wide, but once t's back together it's a very nice fit.
