pvogel Spoke to a couple of the production engineers over by the MX Skateboard they had on display. I asked explicitly about whether the cars come off the line in VIN order.
Answer:
For Model S, yes, they come in exactly VIN order. For Model X it's *very close* to VIN order. Every once in a while an adjustment needs to be made in the process and a MX will come off the line temporarily so another few MX will get ahead of it on the line and therefore they don't come off the line in exact VIN order, but not wildly off either.
What that means for me, since my VIN is 200 less than the VINS on display is that my car is definitely "done" as sales indicated, so I'm likely just waiting for Sigs to get theirs soon.
He was very hopeful that the MX ramp is going to crank up significantly soon.
Part of the line was visible and he said the mix of cars on the line there was representative of the current Model S and Model X build rates. Having watched the line fairly carefully every time it moved, I'd say that the ratio is 10-15 S for every 1 X right now.
Another interesting tidbit: As of Jan 4, the line runs 4 days a week with employees working 12 hour shifts, the other 3 days the line has maintenance done, adjustments, etc. Before that folks were working 5 days, 8 hour shifts. They voted to have a 3 day weekend and work longer hours.
Jan 29, 2016
mymacbook Did they give you any insight why they are delaying delivery of Production Model X just to finish up Signature if none of those lessons can be given to the already produced Model Xs?
Actually this means you really DON'T want your VIN to be assigned. Perhaps its really smart to order a 90D instead of a P90D just to get the highest quality unit with knowledge from Signature/Founder lines. Sigh.
Jan 29, 2016
highedu There were 4 X's there. I tried to use a bit of social engineering with different reps on the floor but consistent answer that they didn't know anything about production volume.
One who I had met has been with Tesla since 2012 and was part of the S ramp. He said that after the leaks during S ramp they have become very tight lipped with employees downstream customer facing (DS, SC, Sales).
This means if you hear anything from the preceding folks that is not publicly available information or what their computer screen tells them it is probably their own WAG
Jan 29, 2016
pvogel I found that the reps near the cars weren't very helpful. But the guys over by the skateboard were VERY knowledgeable and you could tell when a question was one they knew the answer to but could not share it and when they had a vague enough answer they could give. (i.e. the "line you see is representative of the mix").
We were surprised that they seemed to be doing their own die-casting of the gearbox and motor housings. Apparently the supplier for those (Both S and X) was going under, Tesla bought them and brought all their equipment in-house, but Fremont wasn't going to give them the permit to be doing that kind of work at the factory. Elon said "OK. Well, we're starting die-cast runs on Thursday at this time, here's where I'll be if you need to arrest me. And then we can talk about the 4000 jobs that will be idled because we don't have the parts we need." They got the permits they needed temporarily while zoning gets changed

MikeL i actually get a little happier about it each day I don't get assigned a VIN. I waited to reserve til the res #s were in the low thousands figuring on the conventional wisdom about early builds and their learning curve etc. I didn't really think that stuff would be an issue though but ...

Scrith I was there, the very tall guy in blue. I was just happy to learn that I will fit in my new car. I did talk to an engineer about the headrests, which were a bit low for me, and he said they will become adjustable after the next software update (he mentioned these are unique to the Model X and that the ones on the Model S do not support being adjusted via software)
I also managed to talk one of the sales people into letting me add the 72A charger to my already finalized order without an extra charge (I will follow-up if/when I see it on my order page, but he seemed pretty certain he could make it happen without incurring the charge).
By the way, there was a fifth Model X there, in a room just before where the restrooms were located (non-signature red with white seats). Having seen them, I cannot imagine anyone with young kids would seriously consider purchasing a vehicle with such bright, white seats! They certainly made the interior look different, though.
Also, I loved the figured ash wood (it was in the titanium car I think)...I am very glad I went with it.

Gary and Rachel A very good event. A good crowd but not so many that you couldn't get to the cars. I had a question about the falconwing doors about the Windows. I wanted to know how far they rolled down. Knowing that sensors might be in the way I was happy to see that the Windows went down more than 2/3rds. Sitting in the seat you can rest your arm out the window. Not earth shattering news, just never heard anything about that.![]()

noopec There was indeed a fifth one in the multi coat red vin 441, I had not seen this color in pictures or in person so that was a nice treat. With the white interior and the ash wood. The ash wood looks 95% like the piano wood in S, but under some lighting conditions you can see some wood grains... I think if you want to match the trim in the doors/dash with the back of the seats, that is the best option. If you want contrast then you may want to consider the other options. None of the cars had the black 22 wheels, it seems they are in limited production and going to customer cars instead of their demo cars per one of the reps. I have not seen any pictures with the 22" wheels in black, would be nice if anyone has pictures to share. I'll post mostly pictures of the red mx since I believe that is the least "viewed". Enjoy.

I'm surprised with such a large backlog (and with plans to ramp up significantly) that they are not running multiple shifts.....
Jan 30, 2016
dwebb66 are you describing the Dark Ash Wood that is nearly black? I think the figured ash is the 'regular' wood trim that shows the grain.
Jan 30, 2016
andrewket Tesla really should have given them very different names. Figured ash vs dark ash.
Jan 30, 2016
1208 Thanks for pics noopec. That MC red is great, better than the signature red imho. My top 3 colours for the X are now white, midnight silver and mc red.
Jan 30, 2016
bws Looking at the cost on that window sticker, the base P90D is $115,500, while it is $108,000 when I configure right now. Is that the cost premium for a signature, or did the cost change, or am I missing something?
Jan 30, 2016
CmdrThor That would be because in the configurator they display the price after the $7,500 federal rebate.
Jan 30, 2016
NJ Plugin The price still is not right. I think the $15k for the 90 battery is wrong. That is included in the Performance price.
Jan 30, 2016
lango Is it just one shift or two, though? It could be 2x12 hours, otherwise it would not be shifts but one shift

Jan 30, 2016
mulder1231 The red is very nice, I like the look of that red line with the falcon wing doors opened and the dark headliner!

ohmman Note also that the red is in very favorable lighting. The other cars at the event appear to be under warehouse fluorescents. Lighting makes a huge difference.

Jan 30, 2016
omarsultan Agree, seem like they are double-dipping for the battery.
- - - Updated - - -
Damn, the VINs they had on display are only a few dozen short of my VIN. I guess having had a pretty early build of the Model S, I am less worried about getting a "production beta" Model X - I know form experience that Tesla will work to make things right if needed.
It also validates my belief that there once they fix whatever supply chain issue they have, they are going to unleash a torrent of MX deliveries--January might be thin, but I think Q1 will be solid. If there was a fundamental issue with the vehicle, they would stop manufacturing altogether. Instead they seem to be building and then and buffering them at the SvCs.

noopec Yes I was referring to the Dark Ash Wood. Here are a few more pictures:![]()

roser I attended the event, first time seeing the Model X in person. My overall impression was that seating in the car is very tight, especially in the 7 passenger version. I suppose this is to be expected from a CUV, but I'm glad I was able to reset my expectations, resulting in us thinking carefully of our typical seating arrangements and ultimately changing our configuration from a 7 passenger to 6.
The 6 passenger configuration allows the 3rd row passengers to stretch one leg forward in the aisle, and is easier for the 3rd row passengers to get out. Also one of our seating scenarios will be two adults in the front, two child seats in the 2nd row with an adult in the 3rd row looking after the two 2nd row children. Without the open aisle there would be no space for the adult in the 3rd row to reach over and feed the 2nd row kids, hand them toys, iPads, etc. If we went with a 7 passenger, it would be far too tight squeeze for an adult + 2 child seats in the 2nd row, even with narrow car seats like the Radian RXT. With 5 passengers we lose some rear cargo space in the 6 seat configuration vs the 7, but I figured we could probably place a suitcase in the open space in the 2nd row if needed.
Rear view mirror visibility is very poor, especially with the 7 passenger configuration headrests in the way. Others have posted images online. The 6 passenger isn't as bad. The rear view mirror is very small, maybe 6-7" wide.
I'm 5'11" and my hair would touch the headliner when seated in the 3rd row as well as the middle seat of the 2nd row. Sitting with 3 adults in the 2nd row is very tight laterally. I felt those seating positions were best for small children or adults on very short trips.
On the surprising positives was the rear trunk space, even with the 3rd row seat up was very deep. I believe it would be possible to store most "average" strollers in there, but did not get to test it out.
The white seating is indeed very soft, more so than the leather. The employees seemed confident that they would wear better over time vs leather and be less prone to jean dye transfer, with the exception of the stitching, which I had not considered. One employee suggested using a tide pen to clean the stitching if it gets dirty/discolored.
Hope these observations are helpful!
Jan 30, 2016
andrewket It's more glossy and dark than I had imagined. It does match the seat backs, though.
Jan 30, 2016
CarlK Goes very well with the white interior too.
Jan 30, 2016
Zapped Arriving a few day late on this thread and idk if this was stated already ..... but it seems if you're confirmed there's no invite. I'm in the same boat.
I'm guessing TESLA might be going after those customers on the fence who have reserved but putting off confirming first.
Jan 30, 2016
leh22a The $15,500 for the 90kWh upgrade is erroneous on that sheet. Base of $80k + $35.5k for the performance upgrade includes the 90kWh upgrade.
Jan 30, 2016
MrBoylan Yup. The window sticker price is definitely incorrect. Hope someone at Tesla catches that before they start shipping them out to customers. I seem to recall they screwed up the early stickers on the Model S too.
The total price of a completely loaded production Model X P90D (with every single option) is currently $152,450. This one says is $160,450 - $8K higher - and the total price on the page doesn't even match its own wacky options pricing (looks like the price is over by $15,500 but then they're deducting the $7500 tax credit from this incorrect price to get the lower (also incorrect) price).

Love this info! Thanks man!! We will have our cars very soon it seems...
Jan 30, 2016
engle I wish they had a sign or told us there was a 5th X in that area, since I would have liked to show my wife the exact interior she selected. Based on those VIN's, thou, I expect to receive factory delivery within 2-3 weeks after the last US Sig is delivered, so probably a moot point after waiting almost 4 years now!
Jan 31, 2016
CarlK That does not mean they are not running multiple shifts per day. Where I work we actually run four 12hr 3/4 day shifts (alternate 3 day and 4 day work week for each shift people) per week. The plant (fab) is running 7/24 none stop. Those are very expensive captital equipments we have they need to be put to maximum utilization. I've heard quite a few of our production people were hired by Tesla. I won't be surprised if some of them brought this 12hr shift idea to there. Eventually Tesla could also have a 7/24 operation if need to.
Jan 31, 2016
andrewket At what time is the changeover from one 12hr team to the next? 6a and 6p?
Jan 31, 2016
Marcos I'm confirmed and I was invited. I was just too late to confirm, and it was closed by the time I tried to register.
Jan 31, 2016
CarlK Yes 6AM-6PM and 6PM-6AM shifts. By CA law anytime beyond 8 hr day is paid time and half overtime. Night and weekend shift people also get paid additional 10~15%. Pretty tough 12 hr day but they also get alternate 3/4day weekends. Everyone seems to like that.

ModelXsig1100 I think the first events have started in Sunnyvale. Anyone have success showing up with 3 guests (2 kids and a spouse, say) despite being limited to +2 on the invitation?
Feb 4, 2016
Geemoney3135 I live in Chicago and got the email for the event but by the time I tried to RSVP, the event was filled. Because I "Know" someone within Tesla, I reached out and they were able to arrange a private test drive earlier in the day of the event. I'm so excited. It's next week. I'll post comments and thoughts afterwards.
Feb 4, 2016
CTemp222 I think that the event will be fairly crowded because everyone wants to see the X in person. They might be pretty strict.
Feb 17, 2016
MichealW I brought my wife, kid and my good friend and it was not a problem at all. I also went back another day after lunch and test drove again and they were totally cool about it. Both times I went it wasn't that busy. They had several cars (5 or 6) and they only had a couple out at any given time. The rest just sat waiting.
Feb 17, 2016
CTemp222 Yea I was there too and I was surprised that there weren't a lot of people.
Feb 17, 2016
cbin97 Yeah it is actually pretty casual. They want to sell these things so the more the merrier. Plus two seconds with an X in real life is the best sales tactic. I didn't think I would like it THAT MUCH. I thought it would be a "tall S with some bells and whistles." This thing is the next step in the evolution chain of cars let alone SUV's.
Feb 20, 2016
nick_083 I went to the event in Highland Park, IL today - there were very few customers... but the staff was TOTALLY clueless and couldn't answer a single question about Model X... just kept pushing me to finish configuration. They kept saying "they don't give us much information on the Model X", I thought the level of competency was totally unacceptable.
Feb 20, 2016
TJunkers That terrible. I went to the event in Greenwich, CT and the staff knew every detail about the X. Made the event incredibly fun!
Feb 21, 2016
ModelXsig1100 Not denying your experience, but this could be a YMMV situation - I also went to the Highland Park event Saturday but had a very knowledgable person and was not pressured to finalize. It was pretty crowded around the red/ultra white/6 seat one they had inside when i was there, and the test drive of the blue/tan 7 seater P90D was awesome!
Feb 22, 2016
CTemp222 They weren't anything like that. quite the opposite actually.
Feb 23, 2016
MrBoylan I just got home from the Manhattan "Meet Model X" event (cocktail party, not the test drives). Seemed like there were more Tesla employees than customers there. Not sure if it was the rain that kept people away or they just didn't confirm that many people for it (or a combination of both). I had tried to confirm an hour after I got the reservation last month but the site told me it was already full. Then I got a call from an inside sales rep a couple of weeks later who said he could get me into the event. It was nice to see the X but kind of bittersweet too, given my situation. Got a pic of the one they had in the showroom which was close to my config (Blue, Black leather, black Alcantara headliner, etc.). Spending a bit more time in the X did get me thinking that the 7-seater is not the best choice if you plan to have adults (or big kids) in the rear row, particularly with the black headliner. It just feels too tight back there. The 6-seater feels much more open.
Also, I noticed that the carpet in the six-seater was completely seamless (sorry, no pic). It didn't look like the patchwork carpet that the earliest Sigs were getting (that had stitching where the seventh seat pedestal would have been).

Feb 23, 2016
SMSMD Sorry to see in your signature that you cancelled due to your driveway... are you interested in Model 3?
Feb 24, 2016
MrBoylan Yep. Hopefully the Model 3 will be narrower than the S and X. It will be tricky to keep two cars back there (Model 3 plus Highlander for people hauling) but we'll figure something out. Street parking is not fun with alternate side parking rules but we could leave the Highlander in the street some times and keep the Model 3 in the back. Back to waiting...
