"Meet Model X: Exclusive Viewing" part 1

  • Jan 22, 2016
    highedu
I received an email today that a select group of Model X owners and reservation holders have been invited to get hands on with the Model X and speak with product developers in Fremont.

I am not posting the actual email as I don't want to flood Tesla with a bunch of uninvited guests since they most likely will have a capacity constraint

Just an FYI to see who else is going.

Got the email and I am going. Looks like it is open to all North American order holders - atleast that is what the rsvp page says.

That's good news. At least they have ONE good Model X to show, in Fremont. :) I wonder if they're only inviting Bay area folks or a wider group. I'm guessing they're going to start doing this on a regional level to fill up the confirmed order pipeline once they actually start ramping up production in a meaningful way.

I'm in the bay area and I just got invited. Will be attending for sure.

Just got the invite as well, find it strange that you can only bring 2 additional people for a total of 3.

Based on previous experience, does anybody know if they count toddlers (3 years old) against the 1+2 limit? I want to bring myself, 2 other adults, and my toddler.

Hoping they will let us through with 4 people total (3 + toddler).

    "Meet Model X: Exclusive Viewing"

In another thread someone posted that they got an email from Tesla saying the event was already fully booked.
So far everyone who has posted in this thread saying they received an invite is located in the greater SF Bay Area.
I am also located in that area but did not get an invite. I'm not an X owner or reservation holder.

I am an X reservation holder in Orange County and I didn't get invited, but would totally go.
  • Jan 22, 2016
    MrBoylan
I had a chat with one of the ISRs in Fremont today about this and she suggested that there would be more of these events (but could not definitively say where/when they would have them). I expect they will have them in other locations, inside and outside California in the coming weeks. I saw enough at the reveal to confirm my order but I know some folks need to get more hands-on so I think it will be great when they can get more people's butts in Model X seats. Then the orders will start confirming at a furious pace.

Received email @ 10:31 am PST and confirmed right away since these events do fill up. It will give my wife and son an opportunity to eXperience the X before we receive ours since they didn't go to the reveal...

I am in Nor Cal, have confirmed and did get the invite to the 29th event but did not use it since I went to the reveal and also had some quality time with Bonnie's Sig 2. I did not get the invite to the more expanded driving events that others have reported nor the January Update posted above.

I just got an email from someone I know who works for Tesla in the Boston area:

"That Tour is specifically designed for Model X reservation holders who have not yet configured. We will have a separate, exclusive event for those who have already ordered the vehicle. I will reach out with details when they come across the bow!"
  • Jan 23, 2016
    aesculus
That makes sense from what I have heard so far. The two persons that mentioned it had reservations but had not ordered/confirmed.

I thought it odd though that those that received the Exclusive viewing invite had already confirmed. I guess it was in hope of calming our nerves.

So if Tesla's objective with these events is to give X reservation holders an opportunity to sit in and drive an X, it would be helpful if each event had both a 6-seat and a 7-seat X to experience up close, as I think the seating configuration is a major decision for most people. It won't be enough to have a single 7-seat X at each event and say "The 6-seat configuration is just like this car but without the center seat, so just imagine it". I think you need to try moving between the 2nd and 3rd rows without that center seat in place to really get a feel for what the difference is.

Apparently *A LOT* of Model X reservation holders who have not confirmed yet received the e-mail inviting them to the test drive events in North America. If you've already confirmed your order you will not be able to RSVP. But if you want to get on a waiting list for your local event or be notified specifically about Model X test drives in your area, go to this page:

Thank You for Your Interest in the Meet Model X Tour | Tesla Motors

And fill out the form. I don't think all the slots are booked across US and Canada, so if you are logged into the Tesla web site and have *NOT* confirmed your Model X order yet, you have a shot of being able to confirm a date/time.

It's a different page for the RSVP event (for model X reservation holders who have not confirmed yet). That's here:

It is unbelievable that people who have already ordered are being prioritized behind those who haven't. This is the first time I have thought about cancelling my order. If you're reading this people at Tesla, you need to make it right.

Throw on top of that the statement Tesla has made that waiting to configure does not cause you to lose your spot in line. Basically it was a complete waste for me to configure already if that was true. I could have waited until now and gotten my test drive invite and then configure.
  • Jan 23, 2016
    ModelS8794
I have an order finalized, and a second order not yet invited to configure. I do not have an order invited to configure but not yet completed.

I received my invite at 5PM EST today (Saturday)

Perhaps wait a day and see if an email invitation arrives.

The invite I received looked just like the email from a few days ago "January Model X Update" or something like that. In the first email there were two sections. In this email there was a third section at the bottom with a link to the drive event signup website.

I received the Model X update email yesterday. There was no link to "Meet the X" in the email. I doubled checked again today. Nada, Nothing. Not going to stress, I was at the reveal, with a test ride. Confused, but content. Let those who have not had a chance to see, take the drive.
  • Jan 23, 2016
    CarlK
It makes sense since their delivery date would be sooner than those who have not ordered yet. This will give them one last chance to corfirm.
  • Jan 23, 2016
    aesculus
At this point I am not sure those that have ordered will get delivery sooner than those that have not for the same configuration. This is a chance for Tesla to do the right thing one last time and let those who delayed because they wanted to see the car in their rightful place in line based on their reservation position.

I will gladly step aside for someone who is ordering right after these events and has a reservation date before mine.

Ohio might be one of the states Tesla is having problems with. The state might not allow a "test drive event" or getting permits to do it are a bureaucratic nightmare.

    - - - Updated - - -

Occasionally you need to be pro-active with Tesla. Sometimes just saying you don't want random e-mails from Tesla gets you off the mailing list for events. Call/e-mail your Tesla rep and make it happen.

Non illigitimi carborundum : Translated from Latin: "Don't let the bastards get you down."

Perusing these forums, you will often find very helpful information and A LOT of VERY helpful people. What you will also find mixed in is a fair amount of "internet outrage" over small things that aren't a big problem at all. This can take the form of people complaining about anything and everything whether or not the complaints are legit. TBH, I've pulled back from reading the forums because it can get so damned depressing; people have complained about so many of the things I love and find unique and wonderful about this car's design (falcon wing doors, panoramic windshield, etc.). Just realize that there are a lot of silent lurkers on the forums that are pretty darn happy with the cars and are just tired of getting beaten down by the "YOU IDIOT!!! THE FALCON WING DOORS ARE THE WORST DESIGN MISTAKE IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSE!!!!!" Some of the frustration is VERY understandable! But some of it is truly absurd ("THE CAR IS TOO WIDE!!!!!!").

Is Tesla doing everything right? No, but show me a car company that is. Could Tesla's communication be improved? Yes, absolutely! Will it stop me from buying the fastest and cleanest SUV/CUV on the planet? No.

For newcomers, it's often hard to see the happiness of Tesla ownership through all of the noise, fear, anger, and reckless speculation on the forums sometimes. But don't lose sight of the forest for the trees. Many happy Tesla owners never visit the forums and many never post.

It isn't that you don't lose your place, it is that if they haven't gotten to your number yet, you don't lose your place. That is an important distinction. Given your relatively low number it likely will benefit your place in line having confirmed your order since there will be a number of people lower than you holding out for one reason or another. They are still holding out by the time your number comes up then they are clearly going to be behind you.

To your other issue, why did you confirm your order if seeing the car was a make or break issue? at a 6k reservation holder I would have thought it would make sense that you would get a chance to see one well before you would have to order to avoid losing your spot. I mean even with a fast ramp, there should be safely a couple cars in the Atlanta area with owners around that would likely be happy to show their cars if Tesla didn't have any available still. Did you feel like they were going to pull your place completely if you didn't confirm your order as soon as it opened?
  • Jan 25, 2016
    CmdrThor
When I was invited to configure I don't think people had heard yet whether waiting would affect your place in line. I figured it could potentially and they might just go by confirm date in which case I should go ahead and confirm. Also it isn't that seeing the car is make or break, but if the car is going to be here, and they are giving people test drives, I absolutely want to be included in that group. If no test drives were being offered before my delivery date then I wouldn't really have another choice.
  • Jan 25, 2016
    MrBoylan
And don't you hate when forum trolls pick out one small piece of an otherwise excellent post just to dwell on that one issue?

Speaking of which, the width of the car is actually relevant to some folks. :) Living in NYC, our driveway is really tight: about 100 inches wide at its narrowest point. With mirrors extended, the Model X is 89.4" wide, leaving only about 5 inches on each side. So the X is over a foot wider than our 7-passenger Highlander Hybrid. Folding the mirrors gets you back about 8 inches, but there's a really tight corner at the bottom of the driveway, passing between a building wall and our neighbor's car. I'm glad the X has proximity sensors and power folding mirrors. And the Summon feature of AP 7.1 may allow us to let the car navigate the tricky parts. But this is the one thing that my wife is really worried about as it already feels tight getting through the driveway in our narrow little SUV and both mirrors of our current car are already scraped up. We also frequently have to squeeze around double-parked cars in Queens where every inch counts.

So while "THE CAR IS TOO WIDE" might seem like a strange objection, the fact that the X is wider than a Cadillac Escalade (which I wouldn't ever consider buying) is actually relevant to some prospective buyers.

And I didn't quote the rest of your post because I agreed with it. :)

FWIW, got an invite on Saturday morning and promptly made an appointment for Saturday, February 6 in Burbank, CA.

I'm an early reservation holder (~3000), but haven't ordered yet as I have no desire to risk $5k before actually seeing the car.

If anyone gets word on whether 2 kids plus 2 adults might be allowed, I'd appreciate knowing. Otherwise, I might not get to ride in the car myself! (Spouse's likely primary car and we couldn't leave a kid at the service center by himself).

Depends on your configuration: P90D (early 2016) comes before 90D (mid 2016) which comes before 70D (mid to late 2016).

At this point, when you'll get your car is unknown, but based on the available data, it appears that P90Ds with the Premium Upgrades Package may be moving along through production faster than those without it. I say this based on what we've seen in Model X tracker with VIN assignments and estimated delivery dates.

I configured my 90D on December 13th and the order was confirmed on December 20. It's a 90D (without the "P" upgrade) but with everything else but the 22-inch wheels. My best guess is that I'll get my car in June or July. It could be earlier or later, but that's my guess. I do have a DS (Delivery Specialist) assigned, but he has been no more specific than "mid 2016".

It just occurred to me that we may be talking about 2 different types of events.

The one I've been to earlier was a 15 minute test drive. That invite came as part of the January Model X update email that I received on January 22. (I'm an low-ish reservation number, but haven't ordered).

I, at least, haven't seen any other kind of invitation.

  • Jan 26, 2016

In Manhattan, there were two distinctly different events:

a.) A one-on-one "Meet the X" test drive which I believe was scheduled each half hour from 10-6 on the applicable days (2/23 to 2/26 in NYC). Since I have a confirmed order, I did not get invited to these events.
b.) Evening reception on February 23rd from 7-9 PM, which I'm assuming is more of a group event with one or two Xes that you can get in, play with, but not drive. I *did* get invited to this one, but tried to RSVP 2 hours after it was sent, and the event was full.

Here's what the second event invitation looked like:

Same thing in the case of Chicago. Feb 13 test drives by appointment (for reservation holders who haven't configured/ordered), Feb 15 evening 2-hr "viewing" event for those who have ordered. I for one believe this is an appropriate and well thought-out approach. That is, invest more resources into driving conversion of reservations into orders, but still *generally* do right by those who have ordered by giving them an opportunity to touch and feel the car. At least in my case, I don't think the experience of a full test drive would be THAT much more valuable at this point than a close encounter with a parked X. I can wait for my own.

Did everyone who got an invite get an invite to both or is the test drive invite to a select group in select locations?
  • Jan 26, 2016

Test drive seems to be limited to reservation holders who have not yet clicked 'order'

I don't think anyone has received an invite to both. Or, I guess there might have been an anomaly here and there, but for the most part people fall into one group or the other and have received the invite to the corresponding event.

I got my email on Jan 23rd and I am 8009. Not sure if the 26th was available to me but I picked the first one that came up which was Sat at 9:15.
My order is not placed/confirmed yet.

Ok, perhaps there are 2 events: test drives and viewing. I got the evening viewing one. Not the test drive...yes, I already ordered, but that means I can't get a test drive?

    I already ordered too.

That appears to be the case, yes

I would think that all locations have a test drive event too... maybe it's just a lottery.

Should Tesla prioritize Model 3 potential customers instead of Model X actual customers for any Model X related events?
The mismatch marketing should be part of excellent customer service?

I think it's totally correct direction that Tesla satisfies existing Model X customers first, then soon tobe X customers, then potential X customers, then potential 3 customers, and finally the mass unknown and non-potential customers.

And it is full - I tried to RSVP today.

The 'sorry' page says they'll be scheduling another viewing in Dedham in the near future.

Thanks. I ordered a P90D with performance. Tesla has been going around the East coast arranging test drives of MS. They first did an event in Red Bank, NJ headquartered in a hotel. I subsequently received an offer to bring the car to my house for a test drive. But nothing for the X.

That's not what they're doing here. Model X "customers" would be those with confirmed orders, Model X "soon to be customers" would be those with refundable deposits but no commitment to order yet. With the test drive events, Tesla has acknowledged specifically that they're prioritizing "soon to be customers" - those who have reserved a Model X but not confirmed their orders yet. I'm not saying it's wrong. People like me are already "on the hook" and Tesla needs/wants to get more of these low hanging fruit (reservation holders) picked.

But it does feel a little like we're being "penalized" for being crazy/dedicated/excited enough to confirm orders without a test drive.

Was there anything you had to do to get a DS assigned? I confirmed Dec 8th for fully loaded 90D and haven't heard anything yet. Should I be bugging them?

There seems to be a pattern based on where you intend to take delivery as to whether you hear from a DS early or not. I finally called delivery last week and asked them who my DS is and what's the status of my car. DS called me within the hour with the most facile pablum of "early 2016" for my car. It was fairly clear to me that she probably hadn't even bothered to check the status of my car in SalesForce as my inside sales rep was able to tell me more about the status of my car 2 weeks ago than she was willing/able to tell me last Friday.

Well, I don't know if it was coincidence or not but I did e-mail one of the senior guys at the Westchester store with questions about the X and whether they had delivered any yet (he was the guy who took us on our S test drive in 2013). I'm considering switching delivery to Syosset as they have delivered several Xes already. The next day I had an e-mail from someone who says he's my DS and he works at the Westchester store. I have no idea if these two issues are related.

But also, I'm not sure whether having a DS matters for us since deliveries of the 90D are still pretty far out (likely July/August time frame). I've e-mailed my DS twice in the past week (about the "Meet the X" events) and still received no reply. I may give him a call at some point to see if he can get us into any of the local X events.

I have a confirmed order for a 70D and I got an invitation to the event in Chicago yesterday. The only two problems are that I live in Minneapolis and I will be in Hawaii at that time. Hopefully they will have a Model X at my local SC some time soon. Given the fact that I am getting a 70D, driving one before my car is built should not be a problem.

I just got a call from Tesla to arrange a test drive (not just a viewing) at the Sunnyvale store. It is next Tuesday, the 2nd.
Looking forward to it with great excitement.

So tomorrow is the day of the event. Probably won't get a lot of time to ask a ton of questions so want to prioritize top 5 questions:

    1. How quickly are fixes to issues found in the field incorporated back into the production line?
    2. What is the current pace of production? Has their been a temporary slowdown?
    3. When do you anticipate 90d's beginning production?
    4. Is the extra sensitivity in the falcon wing doors a hardware or software issue?
    5. ?

    What do you guys think?

i think #3 is the only question that they will respond too and the answer will be the same as you can get from calling them today.

I will ask, let's see what they say.

In the email I received it said some of the product engineers for X will be there to ask questions. I am assuming they know more than the DS or Sales teams

4 Model X Production VINs from Factory Event

Just returned. Got eXcited when I realized all 4 Production Model X's on display have a higher VIN then my 41X: 000444, 000445, 000447, 000448. Here is each VIN plate followed by its color. Someone please add them to the database. Thanks! I also learned there will be a total of 16 of these initial marketing production X's touring the country in the coming weeks.

Ugh...the late end of what I was expecting. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. When has tesla ever exceeded on a timeline estimate?
