So my little keychain hack (see first post in this thread) has been sitting in a drawer all lonely... until today when I finally got my Model S.
Now that I've actually got it attached to the "key", I can say it works perfectly. Love it... that little thread part is VERY strong, seems perfect length.
I went with the same but removed the crab claw and threaded the small ring onto my normal key ring. Because I read on the Amazon reviews that sometimes the small rings break, I used two of them side by side on my ring to make sure I don't lose the fob.

How is the FOB holding up in the same pocket as your keys? Seems like it would get scratched quite a bit over time. I'm considering whether I want to put my keys in a different pocket so the FOB is on its own and more protected. (Ironically, I used to be an engineering intern at Motorola many years ago--and one of my responsibilities was a "pocket test"--an accelerated, simulated test on how the phone's finish would hold up while in a jeans pocket with keys!)
Currently, one front pocket is for my iPhone, one front pocket is for my keys, and my wallet's in a back pocket. Hmm. If I have to separate my keys from the FOB, and the keys can't go in the iPhone pocket...do I need more pockets?!?

Fob in left pocket. Keys in right pocket. That's my solution.
Here I compare my unused key and the one I use all the time. I keep the fob in the same pocket as my other keys -- unconnected to the keychain (standalone). I just took the new one out of the plastic it came in for this shot. It has scratches on it!

Since there's literally no point in having contact access to this fob, I will be putting mine either on a necklace, or a custom arm brace. I do recommend the move towards keyless entry with a backup mechanical key hidden somewhere in case of a power failure. metal keys wear holes in pockets and scratch lots of things. Also, I hurt myself once when I fell with keys in my pocket.

1. Thicker nylon string than most similar products. Not too wide that it can be inserted. 2. Detachable 3. Shorter cord than most similar products.
Others I tried: OP/TECH USA 1301322 System Connectors - Too wide to be inserted
COSMOS 2 inches Black 50 PCS Cellphone Strap with Silver Color Tone Ring - These are what Tesla are providing now except about and 1/4-1/2 inch longer. Too flimsy.

One way to protect the key fob from scratches and the like is to put a coat of gloss medium on it. Liquitex makes the best. It's an acrylic coating that dries to a smooth gloss finish. Not sure how durable it would be but it's worth a try.

I'd worry that the finish would crack when you pushed the buttons since the plastic flexes when you do that.

One of the virtues of this material is that it's flexible and kind of rubbery, so cracking will not be an issue. When it scratches or wears it can be peeled off and a new coat added.

I'd like Tesla to develop something waterproof that contains a passive RFID chip, like the FOB contains and uses if it loses battery power, that I could use to open the door and start the car. The car can already do this with a dead FOB, so all they would need to do is make an RFID chip and put it inside some plastic.

For all you performance, black leather with red piping, carbon fiber people (hint hint Elon and others):
I got it at Amazon and my key lives in it. With 4+ software, the key never needs to even come out and is safe from scratches/dings.
Plus anyone else using the op-tech mini loops: If you take separate the clip , and pass the 1/2 clip through the loop twice (second pass is tough), you can shorten the op-tech mini even further making it even shorter (shown in the picture below). It is very secure and sturdy.

Walla2, that looks like a good solution for me (I've got black perf interior with red piping and CF accents). Does the string come with the holder? The leather holder comes with the metal clip and a leather loop that goes into openable screw rivet. The op-tech mini loops (the string) are separate/not included. I put my op-tech mini into the rivet and then push it in-line with the rivet to make everything as compact as possible.

Stuarts keyring solution
Here's how I attached my Model S key to my keyring.
Ingredients: One Model S key One 10mm ring One tube of Superglue gel
Directions: Stick 10mm ring into slot at the back of the Model S key. Secure in place using Superglue gel.
Result: Model S key attached to keyring.

Jan 9, 2013
Babylonfive
Great idea, but that superglue will (likely) break with little stress, IMHO.
But the same process might work well if adjusted slightly... I suggest: - some sandpaper scuffing of the fob plastic around the location where the ring touches (folded sandpaper or even a triangular file?) for better adhesion - attachment via two-part epoxy, for strength

Jan 9, 2013
Stuart
I picked the rubber-infused flexible glue because I thought that should last better than normal cyanoacrylates. Note that there was no wobble in the 10mm ring it was jammed in there pretty firmly, and the glue was just to keep it from pulling back out. So the glue is subject to tension forces, but hopefully not day-to-day sideways flexing. Ill report back if and when it breaks.

Sorry if I appeared to criticize - you did pick the best cyanoacrylate, IMHO. I bought some similar lanyards at Michael's the other day. But I too am thinking I won't carry around any other keys.
I always had my car key on it's own ring. I keep my keys in the car, so they are always with me. I think my house key may join the rest and not make it back into my pocket.
I have used a sampo ball bearing swivel before. it allows the fob to spin, so it can lie flat in your pocket. I tried several sizes of split rings that I had lying arround. pictured is the best I could find, but I am still looking for a smaller one, but I don't know how I would get it on without ruining the bar it goes through. It still needs a bit of work.
I wont own the Model S for awhile, but I just ordered the Case Logic Flash Drive Holder. Might as well. Good thread!

I had a house full of stuff for a car I didn't own! Floor mats, license plate light bulbs, frank mat, cargo net, 14-50 outlet, jacket. The S will come, and you'll have a blast actually using all the stuff. Buying something every once in a while helped with the wait, because then I'd get excited about the new accessory coming, taking my mind off the actual car, and when it got here the S delivery date was a few days closer. It made the time go by a little less slowly.

I've been avoiding keeping the fob with my other keys to avoid scratching it up and even so, it's already showing signs of wear. I'm only half kidding when I say I'm actually considering having "paint armor" added to the fobs when we have the whole car wrapped. once they are protected, i will add them to my key chain, they are just so slick that they fall out of the pocket easily when not connected to anything and I sit down on the couch.

Kinda brings up a (new?) question. Can you buy a keyfob yet? Anybody had to? What would it cost?
Ok the Key Fob is very cool. Everyone loves it but the design is very flawed. I need ideas on how to attach it to my key ring. One thought is to use a cable tie but it's pretty bulky in my pocket.
Although that worked fine and made it easy to detach a key-ring from the fob, was starting to see too much wear on the fob itself from being in my pocket, so now advanced to this USB sleeve:
Ended up attaching the camera straps to the USB sleeve key-ring, as I liked the detachable connectors.

A very thin zip tie. Takes a few seconds to work it through the opening in the fob, but then you can attach it to the rest of your key chain and it's pretty unobtrusive.

I use that, except...I don't use it. I have one on each key--originally didn't even bother with one on my key--and I've hooked it to my regular chain once. But I usually wear jeans to work, so I just but the fob in the small coin pocket, my regular keys in my regular pocket, and I'm good to go! No need to attach to my other keys; never need to take it out, but if I want to tape the buttons quickly, it's easier to get to or push in the little coin pocket instead of the deeper pocket mixed in with other keys. For me, I mean.

I saw that product in the stores a couple of years ago and thought "how stupid is that?" Who'd want to carry USB thumb drives in a padded case on their key chain? After reading this thread, I knew it would be perfect for the Model S key fob and went looking for one. All of the stores I went to told me the product was discontinued, and I finally found one in the clearance bin at the 5th store I tried.
It works great, but I'd suggest moving quickly to find one!

Thank you!! I agree. I hate the FOB. I was going to start a thread about a blog that doesn't look like a cheap hot wheels car. I assume that before too long there will be parent blog posts that say "6 months later and we found the Tesla key in the kids' toy box." This was another impractical gimmick, just too cute, in the vain of, "hey, no one really wants grab handles or hooks for dry cleaning."
I think the FOB should have been sleek brushed aluminum with a nice Tesla emblem on it and visible buttons it. I would have taken the approach -- how would Apple have designed this key. Btw, for "practical" cute, I might have, say, made the key be USB thumbdrive with 32GB of of memory so that you could use for your media too.

Apr 15, 2013
Jason S
Keyfob having the media would mean the fob would most often be left in the car. ... Nice idea tho. =)
I do what kendallpb does; put it in my coin pocket.

Similar to me. Tried the first, works fine. But didnt want the fob to get all scratched up as other owners are reporting. So I got the USB sleeves too. Instead of just using the sleeve, which I guess technically the fob isn't attached to and may fall out (unlikely, as it's a tight fit), I use a combination of both. Works just fine for me.

Apr 21, 2013
jomo25
When I first saw your photo of the doubled up solution, I thought it was overkill. THis was before I had the car. Now that I have it, and used the USB sleeve, I realize how easy it is for the fob to pop out, esp. when pressing the fob. And that could potentially be bad. So, I am also using the doubled-up solution. I happened to have a couple of these straps lying around (I think from actual USB/SD card readers I've bought over the years). Much safer.
The only mod to your design is I poked a very small hole in the back of the case logic sleeve to thread the strap through, then attached to the key ring. This helps keep the fob in the sleeve since it sort of anchors it in there. Otherwise, its more prone to pop out because it forces it to hang out slightly. But great idea. It is odd that we'd have to engineer such a "complex" solution IMO. Part of that is Tesla's design and our anal-retentiveness I suppose

Same here. Came to this solution as soon as the USB case arrived. Fantastic fix; doubling-up means you always capture the fob, no matter needing to get a good push on a button or it just slipping out.
