AnOutsider I posted elsewhere that that may end up being the performance nose. I dunno, it took a while for me to become OK with the S nose, I'm not sure I'm ready to jump to the X's
Feb 13, 2012
WhiteKnight I was told by reps in the Fashion Island store that the Model S performance edition would have carbon fiber in the nose and along the bottom lip in the front of the car.
I don't know what that means exactly but something similar to the Model X prototype seems like a good bet.
For non-performance buyers you might be out of luck.

AnOutsider I'm sure we'll be seeing some mods done to the cars. I sorta liked the alpha that had no T on the grille, but instead had it on the hood. I'd like to see someone do that (remove the "T" and chrome). Perhaps someone OTHER than carbonone (or w/e he goes by these days) can make aftermarket CF noses

BriansTesla Nose treatment
Anyone know what happened to this design front end without the grille/nosecone. The current model looks too Audi-Jaguar-ICE like for me and an earlier design looks MUCH MUCH better in my opinion.

It seems that the Model S is all about efficiency and performance and the current front end looks like a styling gimmick.

AnOutsider This is from the alpha testing prototypes. It's mainly missing the bump out and the T, but I don't think it was ever considered a viable production version. There's a whole thread dedicated to the various facelifts the nose cone has seen.
May 8, 2012
Todd Burch With a Cd of 0.22, that's no gimmick. And to achieve 0.22 WITH style is a good thing. The difference between the Cd on this vehicle and the Cd in the beta is probably pretty minimal. But the fact that you like this nose better...well, I guess tastes vary. Can't please everyone. I don't think anyone's getting the Model S they built in their mind.
May 8, 2012
Lloyd I agree with @brians! I not only like this better, I like this a lot better. If I knew that this would be next years model, I would wait! If it was a part of the performance option, it would clinch the extra $$ for this option. I've posted this before, I believe that in the current nose the design emulates the grill of an ICE that they are struggling to differentiate themselves from. This was a move in the wrong direction IMO.

qwk When this alpha nose was first revealed, people were bitching about it non-stop. Now that Tesla has changed it to look more like the prototype, people want the alpha nose. The grass is always greener....
May 8, 2012
dsm363 I am fine with the new nose cone. Getting some people to buy an EV is tough enough. Many people don't want the car to be too far out there on looks. The EV component is enough for them. The car is already amazing looking. This is all subjective of course.
May 8, 2012
jerry33 To me the Model S looks so "me too" or "19th century" that the nose doesn't really bother me. I'm getting it for the high tech and will live with the antiquated styling.

Larry Chanin Hi Brian,
Welcome to the forum.
Personally I would prefer no nosecone whatsoever.
However, I suppose it may serve a function, such as permitting access or being replaceable in the event of minor front-end damage. The bumper resides behind the nosecone and this area of the car is one area most prone to bumps and scrapes, so replacing this small area would be better than replacing the entire front-end.
In the event the nosecone does serve a function, and must be there, then I agree I prefer the earlier design, but I would like to see the Tesla T added.

BriansTesla Hi all.
I should have introduced myself. I have been the automotive business for 36 years and we have been doing electric conversions for a couple of years now. My wife and I randomly wandered into the Bellevue WA Tesla store and she was immediately in love with the Sig Model S. 10 minutes later, we put down the deposit and I began the process of discovery for the Model S.
About the nose design, I always have liked classic designs for cars that stand the test of time as well as designs that are functional and serve a purpose beyond something just for looks. Tacked on items look dated soon after introduction.
If the nose cone enhances aerodynamics, that makes a difference to me. Mine will at least lose the chrome surround as soon as possible. For me the nose on the S in my earlier post looks like it might be on a car designed anywhere from 1995 to 2020. That tells me it will still look good in 2020.
![]()
A logo could be incorporated on the front end and would look good.
I am very excited about driving my Model S. Since I can never leave anything alone, I am planning a number of aerodynamic improvements for it. I'll be looking forward to getting the wh/mi as low as possible.
Brian
May 8, 2012
dsm363 Maybe a LED Tesla logo that glows from behind the cone at night would be cool. I like the new cone but agree the chrome around it could probably have been toned down.
May 8, 2012
NigelM Welcome. You do know the design is finished, right?
May 8, 2012
AnOutsider I've mentioned it before, but it would be cool to see some aftermarket nose cone options. I sorta like the plain come and logo on hood approach. Though I've no problems with the final design.

Larry
May 9, 2012
BriansTesla I am not above making design changes where the original becomes dated at some point. Here the factory redesigned and I just carried it a little further. I think for a car designed in 1990 it made the look more timeless IMHO.

May 9, 2012
vfx Because that's what customers are used to looking at on big sedans. Same with the first Roadster with analog gauges and a "stick shift".
Some owners will likely paint the black void same as the car color. Some like Brian will take it even further.

Jul 7, 2012
dsm363 That's cool. Is this your photoshop design with the grille? That's what the performance version should look like.
Jul 7, 2012
PV4EV
Yup!
I realise the Model S had to have something on the front to optimise the Cd etc, but every time I look at a photo of the production car, all I see is a gaping chrome-rimmed black shiny panel.
So the other night I did some pixel pushing (oddly, I wasn't using photoshop either!) to see if I could add some 'fake' grill lines, even though in reality there doesn't need to be any kind of grill or radiator inlet. The images are a bit rough n ready, but they achieve what I set out to do.
I kinda like Mod 3 below, it would be the easiest to produce and seems to make the car look a whole load more purposeful :-

Jul 7, 2012
vfx Franz pointed out as we stood at the nose the other night that they started out with typical airflow through the nose but as the engineers kept cutting back on the need they dropped the AC and powertrain cooling down low to make huge gains in aerodynamics.

Johan I for one don't like the look of the shiny nose cone. Love PV4EV's suggestions with the fake grill but some work would go into this. My suggestion is something that I think just about anyone could do on their own, with very little skill required and very little cost: put on some black matte vinyl wrap. Tried to do a PS job of what it kind of might look like (not good with PS).
![]()
Got the idea when I saw the pics of the roadster that TMC member Andre Wolfe has just bought (see this thread), image below. Anyway, I think it's doable. Maybe $20 for the vinyl film, some cleaning, a knife and a blow dryer?

Jul 12, 2012
Robert.Boston I think one of the vinyl "carbon fiber" options will be great on the nose cone, especially now that TM has pulled the CF from the front valance and rear diffuser.
Jul 12, 2012
Dborn Agree. I was planning to do just that. Fortunately, I have a cousin in the sign business/ car wrap business. He can also do much the same with the interior, if you don't like the current choices. B pillar "carbon fiber" is also a possible. I would, however, caution against "DIY". - Muck it up and it will look terrible.
Jul 12, 2012
jbherman I agree. I've been thinking the same thing. The Model X nose cone has some CF accents. I think it looks great and would work well on the S, as well. I can't find a good enough picture to show the detail, but I saw it in person at the Santa Monica store and was impressed.

Soflason Have to admit, I'm still bothered by this telling quote in the otherwise glowing Motor Trend COTY story: "...exterior design theme of the Model S as "somewhat safe and conservative," but... beautifully executed design-enhancing proportions, the excellent stance and gesture, and the harmony and grace of its lines... only criticism? "The front end is a missed opportunity to establish brand identity."o update this thread -- lots happening here, we've been seeing some impressive mods to the nosecone as of late.
To me, in my humble opinion, the nosecone, is just neutral - it doesn't match the beautiful design of the Model S, you could argue that the plastic nosecone detracts from the strong overall design aesthetic. But, t?
May have something in the works too on this front - no pun intended...
Recently a few folks have "remixed" their Model S and taken to some creative reworking of the front end:

May 2, 2013
brianman IMO, to their original point, aftermarket modifications can promote the brand (logos, etc.) but they can't really establish brand identity. That has to be done on the entire fleet.
As an example, I don't like the "front teeth" look of the Fisker but it's definitely brand distinctive.
May 2, 2013
FlasherZ I happen to think the Sig nosecone fits the car much better than the new nosecone. I do think the front end on the Sigs look much better and does match.
(To brian's point about the Fisker, it's the "mustache" that turns me off as well. I think there has to be at least a little neutrality.)
May 3, 2013
chadstyle After reading through this thread I see lots of strong opinions. A few seem to like the "bling" of the early mesh prototypes while others like the sportier look with fins across the front. I have a vision of my own when I see the front end...there's some beautiful lines created by the LED strip in the headlamps as it comes forward towards the nose cone. The problem now is that this grill is lacking flare and doesn't make the statement that an 100k sports sedan should make.
Hopefully the very talented guys at Teslaccessories come up with a stylish solution to the nose cone snafu.
May 3, 2013
Soflason Agreed, I actually like Fisker's overall design, not the car though... but they've caught a lot of design pushback for the front grille "mustache" look. They missed there. The Model S nosecone isn't a miss, it's just a bit bland for such a beautiful car.
Al & Ed's also just did a wrap that brings the nose "into" the car a bit more:
