BerTX My newly delivered S60D has rear cupholders, and two rear USB ports. The DS said he had not seen them before...
I took a video and will post as soon as I can figure out how.

LastGas Dimmit. Mine finished production 8/31. Whine.
Sep 10, 2016
number12 How much would you pay to have 2.0?
Sep 10, 2016
LastGas That's a very complicated question, but maybe $2K on top of the $2.5K I already paid for the AP convenience feature. The alternative, though, is to trade cars later. I already have a Model 3 reserved. My car was ordered when AP was $2500, but built after the price increase.
My answer is also contingent on what the current hardware is capable of as the software improves. It may be totally different tomorrow.
Sep 10, 2016
Model S M.D. Awesome!!! Would love to see those pictures! What is your VIN btw? I'm 158XXX...
Sep 10, 2016
hyper Hmmm. Asked my local store today....not surprised, they knew nothing. So, until we see pics is this just a rumor?
Sep 10, 2016
LastGas Upon reflection, I probably wouldn't pay very much for AP 2.0 hardware. I would be satisfied with the current AP hardware if the software were just more refined, and some software features added (like TACC automatically reducing speed when the speed limit changes). I don't think AP 2.0 is necessary to fix the occasional scrape in Summon and Autopark.
I can wait for the Model 3 (or beyond) for full autonomy.
Sep 10, 2016
Canuck Perhaps not but that's minor compared to the fact that it can drive you under a trailer bed given the lack of a forward camera/radar at eye level.
Sep 10, 2016
LastGas That's a good point, but I think that problem can be dealt with using current hardware.
Sep 10, 2016
Canuck How? We know the range of the current hardware and if it can't see high enough because of its placement, how can software change that?
Sep 10, 2016
fallen888 I call bullshit on this. It's been 24 hours and not even a pic of said cup holders.

Sep 11, 2016
LastGas Why do you say it can't see high enough? I know that it can't see objects up high when a few feet away when doing Summon, but generally sensors fan out at distance. All the reports I read said that the problem was the lack of contrast between the truck and the sky, and limits in the radar imaging, the latter being addressed by software.

Drucifer I feel for people who just took delivery and missed some new thing, even if the new thing is relatively minor like cupholders and USB charging ports.
One of the joys of owning a nearly 4 year old Model S, is that when a new feature comes out, I now only feel joy for the proud new owner that found a feature that was a sort of unannounced "Easter Egg" than sadness that I missed out. In fact, the longer I hold on to this car, the more "new to me" features I will enjoy in the next one, so there is even some joy of anticipation that comes with that.
Congrats on your new Model S, and on your "find".
Sep 11, 2016
rdevillers Thanks for this information! Our May 2015 85D and Nov 2015 P90D have the same camera housing.
The May 2015 car does not have the additional blacked-out area on the passenger side of the housing. I think they added that in summer 2015 as a place to mount a toll road transponder. The glass in that area apparently does does not have the coating that may block transponder signals.

BerTX Not cameras -- they are opaque

Sep 11, 2016
BerTX Yep, that looks like what it is.
Sep 11, 2016
Canuck That's nice to say, but we all have momentary lapses of attention while driving, or perhaps a medical issue. The price of an additional camera is cheap to save a life. One of the huge selling points is peace of mind and additional safety, not the ADWEO requirement.
From what I've read, the cameras "arent sophisticated enough to overcome blindness from bright or low contrast light.
The sun was behind the Tesla, not in front of it, it was later in the day, and it was ideal conditions. It certainly seems like a hardware problem to me. Of course, it can be tweeked but the fact is, relying one one piece of hardware give me no peace of mind, regardless of the software capabilities. ADWEO is a must and that defeats the purpose for me since I can't relax. Others can and that's great. It really comes down your nature and the risk you are willing to accept. Overall, AP1.0 will do much more good than harm. However, for me, as I've said before, I can live with me killing me accidentally, I can't live with AP1.0 accidentally killing me (even though it's really still me killing me for failing to be ADWEO).
Sep 11, 2016
Sugacookie Me too!
Sep 11, 2016
LastGas Musk said today that the new 8.0 software would likely have prevented the Florida crash. The camera contrast issue was the problem with the 7.1 software, but 8.0 makes more effective use of RADAR so that confirmation by the camera is not necessary.
The Electrek article from a couple of weeks ago talked about this.
What is new and exciting is the ability of the updated software to "see" an object in front of the car in front of you (bouncing RADAR signals under the car in front). That way you can start braking BEFORE the car in front swerves to avoid the object.
Sep 11, 2016
LastGas Nothing at all about new hardware in the Autopilot release today. Indeed, it seems like a multiple camera system is superfluous. I still think the car needs more RADAR to reach full autonomy.
Sep 11, 2016
Canuck This is from Tesla's press release:
If preventing a collision while on AP1.0 is superfluous, and accidents are fine as long there's unlikely to be "serious injuries", then we will agree to disagree.
Sep 11, 2016
Lyon I don't think VIN has a whole lot to do with it. It's more about built date... at least I hope. My VIN is 155xxx because it was assigned in August some time. Since then I've changed configuration but it does not look as though the VIN has changed. This tells me that the VIN was assigned but the car hadn't been built yet. FYI, my DS thinks I'll have the car by the end of the month and it doesn't look like they've started building it! They must be building cars quickly these days!
Sep 11, 2016
Model S M.D. No kidding, mine hasn't begun production yet, but I keep being reassured an end of Sept delivery... Sounds like crazy fast production. I hope they really are testing our 100 kWh batteries extensively and not rushing it.
Looks like a small side benefit of this slight delay was the rear cup holders and USB ports

Sep 11, 2016
LastGas The press release does not say that this limitation is due to lack of a 2nd camera.
Sep 11, 2016
Canuck Yes, true, although it would be very odd if it did say that, even if it was the truth, which in my view it is. We know that fully autonomous driving is available with more hardware (which obviously solves this problem) -- to quote Elon Musk:
But the limitation may not only be lack of a second camera, but also lack of sufficient processing hardware, both of which we know are coming, the only question is "when?". I know the next step is not full autonomy, but I use that example to show that the limitation is due to the lack of hardware, that is not solved simply by software improvements, at least in my opinion.
Sep 11, 2016

Xenoilphobe Is that the GM cup holder?07-14 Tahoe Floor Console Cup Holder- Black- GM Brand New # 19154712
Sep 11, 2016
Canuck That seems to be the conventional thinking but how do we reconcile that with this:
Speaking about Teslas progress in full Level 4 autonomy, Musk said that what weve got will blow peoples minds, it blows my mind itll come sooner than people think.
The article goes on to state that Musk said the issue is not one of hardware, except in relation to the computer, or processing hardware. So it's conceivable that the Model 3 will come out with the same radar and camera hardware as the Model S/X but will greater processing power to do more with them. I don't accept that view, but what do I know? Nothing really about this stuff, except for my gut feeling, and that's worth about what people are paying me for my opinion.
Lastly, Musk has said repeatedly that the Model S/X will always lead in all areas of technology over the Model 3 (that is, the new S/X's available at the time vs. the Model 3, of course, since a Model 3 will obviously be more advanced than older S/X's in certain tech areas). When we put this all together, unless the Model 3 has the same hardware (both cameras, radar and processing) as the current S/X, AP2.0 has to come out before the Model 3, but even that is just a guess.
Sep 11, 2016
LastGas I understand that the current limitations on automatic lane change relate to sensor capability--they can't see a rapidly approaching car from behind in the passing lane. I am also concerned about the ability to make a turn onto a non-controlled highway with no merge lane without increased sensor range to the sides on the front of the car.
It seems to me that testing out the next generation of AP sensors in the existing S/X fleet would be better than waiting until a mass of Model 3's come out. They would already have data collected to make the Model 3 experience better from day one.
Sep 11, 2016
Canuck Yes, that's it. I use one in the back and one up front since I don't have a center console, and it also fits great in that spot, and I use it to hold my drinks rather than the arm rest ones. The one in the back is a bit deceiving though. That's a small water bottle. For larger bottles, you need to move it back a bit or they hit the top and don't fit. I use non-slip like this under it and it works great:

Sep 11, 2016
Canuck Nice. I like that one. I note that the non-slip stuff I posted was $64! That's a rip-off -- I just googled it to find it as an example. I had some lying around since we used it in our travel trailer to keep the cups and dishes in place while driving. You can probably find it online a lot cheaper, or at RV stores. You will want to use it to keep it from moving around unless you anchor it some way more permanently.

LastGas In context, this seems to apply to automatic emergency braking, not Autopilot. This is what Musk said at the press conference today:
When the Autopilot is not active, it will operate in an emergency braking mode. In that case, its more likely to mitigate the impact speed because if Autosteer it doesnt know if the driver is actually going to get out-of-the-way of an obstacle or not. So it will only brake at the very last second.
If Autosteer is turned on, the car computer knows what its probable path is and whether it will actually turn in time or not. And so it will be a much more comfortable braking experience as opposed to the last-minute and in that case, we think mostly likely we will be able to brake to a complete stop instead of simply mitigating the impact velocity.?
Sep 11, 2016
Buddy This cup holder topic comes up a lot. Please keep the thread on topic so it's easier to find. Plenty of autopilot threads.
Sep 11, 2016
Canuck That was my first attempt too but I couldn't get the velcro to grasp the carpet and when you use the adhesive on the carpet, mine came off before the velcro did so I moved to the non-slip stuff.
Sep 11, 2016
PatrickCP So I missed the cup holders and usb plugs by less than two weeks. Oh well. I guess if you wait to order on hoping it will have some minor convienience additions you will never order and not have the joys of the future now.

??ELECTROMAN?? Yep, Iv'e been waiting for years. I think it will be worth the wait if I ever stop waiting. Although I should have bought the 40kWh, in hind sight, even though I was unemployed and it didn't have rear cup holders. Oh well.

alexvirital @PatrickCP, same exact boat, man. I'd love the cupholders (actually, would prefer the rear USB more) but I love having a magical wonder boat of myth and joy way more. Given how crazy I was during production, waiting another two weeks may well have killed me.

Sep 12, 2016
ecarfan The product page in the Tesla Shop states that console has "USB/power-cord pass-through". I interpret that to mean that it is designed to allow access to the existing USB ports.
Sep 12, 2016
Morristhecat I interpret that as pass through for the front USB ports into the front console. The photo in the online store does not show USB ports in the back by the cup holders. But if it is an outdated photo, I would like to know the new information.

1/1/2015
guest I hope so, you should ask the SC to confirm before install, surely they are only making one version now!! so tell them you don't want old stock,
1/1/2015
guest Lucky newest owners! I wish mine had it (refreshed S delivered about 6 weeks ago).
Quick question for the lucky new owners with the rear cupholder: does it look like the panel that holds the cupholder is a contiguous piece with the rest of the console? In the prior version, the back piece under the heating vents (where your cupholders are now) is just a snapped in flat plastic panel. It would be amazing if the new cupholders are designed as a part that can mount the same way. Take a careful look for a seam that runs down the length of the rear panel!
I'm still hoping the cupholder part is retrofittable to newer cars (and those that just got the new integrated center console installed in older cars).
