Delivery/Installation: Rear Facing Child Seats part 2

Partially based on this post I just asked service when to expect the due bill items parcel shelf and rear child seats. They said parcel shelf will start arriving at the end of January 28th and the rear child seats at the end of February first for Signature then into General Production; still a little way out.

As an update, a P85 was reportedly picked up yesterday in the DC area with child seats installed. Anyone else have their's arrive with the seats yet?

I'll let you know for sure Saturday, but I've asked for my due bill now and maybe I'll know today.

I really hope I get them. I'd like to start taking the kids places Monday.

You have to figure that a *very* small percentage of people in the first few thousand cars ordered the Rear Facing Seats...maybe 10%, tops? Do we have any stats on this, maybe in the delivery spreadsheet? I hope this isn't too long of a wait, as my last eligible jump seat passenger continues to grow at an alarming rate, and won't be able to use these for long!

Looks like my seats are now in and waiting for attachment hardware. I'm hoping to have them installed by the end of next week.

I received my jump seats yesterday when I picked up my Model S (even though I was told they would not be there). The techs at the store were pleasantly surprised and seemed very interested in them (I'm guessing they've seen so few that mine were somewhat of a novelty). Just wanted to let you all know that my oldest daughter, Age 11, is about 4'9" and about 72 pounds, which I believe is over what they recommend. It was tight-ish for her. My 9 year old daughter loves the jump seats and has no issue, but they both say they can't sleep back there. We had 5 adults and the two girls in the back tonight on the drive home and it was impressive. Though I don't think the girls would want to sit in the back for an extended drive, I think that it's fine for them now. And they LOVE LOVE LOVE showing off how they 'get in the back of daddy's car' to their friends (and then make their friends get in. A tip - be sure to hand them some wiping cloth as at least here in Seattle, they are prone to wiping the moisture off the glass which of course makes for great visibility back there.

I will post pictures of them in the back as I know I appreciated seeing pictures of what it would look like (as I knew my oldest was borderline too old for the jumpseats).

Just received word that our kid seats arrived in the Seattle service center today!

We set up a service appointment to install the seats Thursday, January 31st. Kids should have a fun weekend testing out how the seats are.

So, those of yo who are having the, installed, do you have the same latches on the back of the rear passenger seats as pictured up thread?
  • Jan 25, 2013
    Blurry_Eyed
Just by looking at the seat, I can't see any latches like the pictures. But once I start pressing around the back of the middle of the rear passenger seat, I feel the latches and the indentation where they will probably cut the leather and install some type of plastic edging and backing to make it look finished like the pictures upthread.

Once we get them installed, I'll know what the service center has to do to get the latches exposed and properly installed and I'll report back.

So my 3 year old can easily undue his belt buckle (i.e. The red button is too easy to push). His car seat, and all other car seats have required great strength to cause it to unlatch. I'm wondering what others have been experiencing. My wife and I are concerned, since we can't see him back there, if he is still buckled in. My plan is to let TM know and also to mount a mirror.

Maybe a camera that faces the seats and that ties into the 17" screen would be a great option.

Yes, that would be awesome. Being discussed here: Camera for rear facing jump seats

Thanks. I forgot about that thread. Great idea you had and I hope they can make it happen. Maybe it would be part of the child seat option.

    mlascano
Yeah, that would be a very nice option for those with little ones back there. For now I would just be happy to have the jump seats retrofitted. Chicago service hasn't heard anything about any of them heading in their direction. Patiently waiting but hoping I get them before end of February (planning a little road trip then and it would be great if we can the Model S, but need to sit 4 adults, 3 kids).

The kids really like the jump seats.
The buckles took a little getting used to - have to join the two sides before inserting into the latch. (as opposed to inserting one at a time like on regular car seats). Then the straps to cinch are by the hips.

And yes, the kids can unbuckle themselves but they know they are supposed to be secured when the car is moving so it's not an issue.

All of the pictures I have seen so far have been from folks that have black leather interior. Will the color of the jump seats match your leather choice? I have tan leather and am not sure how the dark jump seats will match the rest of the appearance if there is only one color available.

Good point. I haven't ever seen any other option for the jump seats either.
  • Jan 29, 2013
    mlascano
Nor have we been asked about color choices (for those of us who ordered them and have them on the due bill).
My guess is they will all be black/grey, but time will tell.

I have tan leather and black/dark grey jump seats. The trunk is black anyways regardless of leather color so it blends nicely.
  • Jan 29, 2013
    spatterso911
That is probably how they all will be then, no?

I have the tan interior also, and the jump seats are black (or dark grey). They match the black carpet in the trunk area, so no problem there.

Like others have already mentioned, my kids love the jump seats too. It didn't take too many tries, they are now experts at getting in and out of the trunk, buckling themselves in/out, and also opening/closing the trunk themselves. There is a button that can be accessed from the inside by the occupant in the driver's side jump seat. They can open and close the trunk. The child lock setting accessed on the 17-inch display will disable that button along with the back year doors if enabled.

Bottom-line: These seats are working great!! I love that I can take 4 more adults along with 2 kids in the car. Its a mini-van disguised as a Jag or Maserati:love:

My button will close the trunk but not open it... are you sure yours will open it?
  • Jan 30, 2013
    Bound466
Yes. I believe you push it or pull it. The button toggles both ways. If that doesn't work, check your setting for child safety locks ON. if it is on, the button won't function to open the trunk - same with the rear doors.

Sorry to ask a stupid question, but are the child safety locks all independent, i.e. are there three sets of locks (one for hatch, one for driver rear and one for passenger rear)?

My current car has two manual locks (as I think most cars do), so it works out well because I can leave the door that my oldest child sits next to unlocked os he can get in and out freely. I have the other door locked so my younger daughter doesn't try anything stupid.

If there is only one lock for the entire rear bench seat, that'll suck because I'll be forced to leave it engaged, and my son will always need to wait on me to open it.

    tzejohn
There is only one setting for all the doors. But, this is all controlled from the front screen, so what I usually do is to leave the child locks on, and then when I get to a stop to drop the older child off, I change the setting to off, and they can open the door and get out. Then I toggle the setting back. There is no need to get out and do anything.

I leave mine in the garage at home. I tried to stuff it various places, but couldn't find a good place to store it.

They say you learn something new every day... I didn't even try to pull it, like a window switch -- I've only ever pushed it to close. I'll have to show my boys. Thanks!

I believe that the power lift rear hatch is tied to the tech package. I wonder if this button will be there if you get the rear facing child seats without getting the tech package? Since I'm definitely getting the rear facing child seats it would be cool to get the power rear hatch without getting the rest of the items in the tech package I'm not all that interested in. Anyone with the child seats option who did not get the tech package care to comment?

Was this button installed with the seats? If not where is it?
  • Jan 31, 2013
    Blurry_Eyed
The button came already installed in my car. If you are looking at the trunk from the rear, it's on the left side of the car, just under the parcel shelf rail area (i'm recalling from memory. We're getting our rear kid seats installed today, so when I pick up the car tomorrow, I'll confirm and edit the post if i'm off on the exact button placement). Not sure if it's only included in cars with the power lift gate or if it's in all cars, or if it's only installed for cars that ordered the rear kid seats.

Thanks I was able to find out where you are talking about. There is not button on my car. I have the Tech Package (thus the power gate) so I assume the kids seats come with this button. Interesting.

I was mostly interested to see if it could be accidentally hit by dogs, or moving stuff in the trunk.

Ah, and now we find out why the seats cannot be installed by service centers after delivery. FYI, my son hit this button just yesterday and it freaked my wife out since I didn't know about it either. Turns out it only works when the car is in park. Thank goodness!

My mom is in town this weekend, to see my car (and me i guess), but next week I might pry back some panel/carpet and see if I have the appropriate wires to put in a switch.

Well spotted! I have that button, never saw it before. But since my Rear Seats have yet to be installed, that likely isn't a surprise...it's only meant to be seen from inside the Trunk!

Same here, never noticed it before as you don't really know it's there until you start feeling for it. Still waiting on the jump seats. Nice feature for the kids to open and close the hatch.

I posted pictures and more details in the 'Rear Jump Seats' thread so I won't double post here. Seats are great!

I ran into another MS owner at the Gilroy SC today and he told me that rear facing seats cannot be installed after delivery. I don't remember hearing this before I ordered and my wife and I both thought this could be done after delivery. Is there information posted on the Tesla website about this? Is it that hard of a change to make besides this magic button?
  • Jul 20, 2013

Old news...there are major structural mods to the rear bumpers for the rear facing seats. Early production vehicles came with the mods, but presumably to save $$, later production was altered.
  • Jul 20, 2013

It depends on how old your vehicle is.

Newer cars have a different design in the rear safety envelope depending on the presence of rear-facing seats. If you check the design studio now, it's clear that the seats can't be added later.

I think there's a thread here that describes the VIN range.

Thanks, I just found this. Appreciate the tip as a prior search didn't yield the answer.

3rd Row Child Seats Now Factory Only
  • Jul 21, 2013
    DrTaras
So a benefit (private resale point) of having an older Model S that does not have a 3rd row,
over a newer Model S that does not have a 3rd row is that
the older one can still be modified by a new owner to install the 3rd row whereas the newer car can not!
  • Jul 21, 2013
    SFOTurtle
The other thread seemed to conclude with a post that Tesla will no longer make any modifications to add these rear facing seats after delivery, regardless of VIN. Does anyone have any data one way or the other on this other than what's reported in the other thread?
