Dave Metcalf and son Adam break the 400 miles challenge! Incredible...

Okay guys, I'm going for it with my 12yr old son who loves Guinness. Left at 12:22 AM Eastern. Got some good advice from Tesla and my NASA engineer friends. It is going well so far 60mi in 12.4kWh avging 202Wh/mi including two big bridges to get off the island. After that down to 191 or less... I'll keep you posted at stops. Pray we don't get rear-ended!

I'll autopost pics to Twitter- follow dmetcalf.

He definitely can with 200 miles down and 162 rated still on the dash! And here we thought someone in CA would be first ;)

From the dashboard pics it looks like he's doing a constant 25mph. This is also close to optimal for speed vs. range on the Model S.

One of his earlier screenshots showed 25MPH. I'd guess, like djp, that he's aiming for that sweet spot.

Long time lurker here excited about Tesla and the Model S. I have to wonder though how this challenge is going to have any positive effect on the mainstream buyers. Going 400 miles in one charge is cool, and the techies and enthusiasts will love it, but averaging 25 mph on the highway and taking all day to do so isn't exactly going to win the regular joe to want to buy the car. If you go slow enough, I'm sure 500 miles would be possible but people don't drive that way. I'm also echoing a previous poster in questioning how you go so slow on a Florida highway without getting pulled over by the police, isn't there a minimum speed limit?

  • Dec 8, 2012

Yeah, as matt says, it's a bit like those MotorTrend folks sweating it out from LA to Vegas on one charge. Atleast, Florida in December is ideal for this kind of thing.

All the same, looks like dmetcalf and son should be getting there right about now!

    Congrats in advance!

Besides the point of taking up the challenge from Tesla to hit 400 miles, what this also does is clearly point out how you can stretch your range if necessary by slowing down, which might help some people avoid being stranded. I doubt 500 miles is possible with this car no matter how you drive.

The big achievement is showing that it can be done; part of the longer term development is doing it faster and more efficiently. These type of achievements can become a collective tipping point to change perceptions, attitudes and, eventually, behavior. There will be plenty of people out there already who are going to feel more confident about their range just knowing that one driver did this. Dave Metcalf may have unwittingly affected the perceptions of thousands of people in a really positive way.

First, thanks again to all of you for the support, especially my virtual pit crew with good advice from prior attempts, etc. Adam and I had fun and shared the journey like many of you acknowledged. He turns 13 Mon, so this did have a right of passage feel to it and that was a lot of the reasoning for attempting. I will try to respond over the next couple of days. By way of explaining, I was trying to be good and only auto post from the camera function while on the road. We stopped a grand total of 17 minutes plus one routine, police stop to make sure we were okay with the hazards on in the fog so I did not see the new thread until this afternoon. Many things worked for us and a few against. I'll try to detail these and also provide a bit more narrative to go with the pix.

I am going to bed soon :). Thanks again for all the support and well wishes!

First half of the month is only 8.4 cents so $6.74 gets you 423.5 with equiv price in FL of $3.35/gallon means 2.01 gallons is 210 MPGe, right?

    - - - Updated - - -

Bingo! No doubt that California has been a big catalyst in the EV movement but it's fantastic to show that these sort of things can, and do, happen in other places also.
  • Dec 8, 2012
    dmetcalf
I think since I only used 80.3kWh and the car still functioned in a limited way even after the big red charge now after reaching zero for a few minutes might mean there IS a reserve. Some of you may already know this.

We hit rain and some traffic that threw us off a bit toward the end. I was thinking 432 and had aimed for the 450 on the curve from the Tesla blog. Rain really effects rolling resistance...
  • Dec 8, 2012
    NigelM
That's especially cool. Thread title is updated to reflect there was actually a driver and co-pilot.
  • Dec 8, 2012
    dmetcalf
I do think 450 is doable. Pretty flat routes, but more rise than I thought, energy use to get off the island/ town traffic near our house, and the rain and construction pauses hurt, even though I only got stopped at 7 lights the whole day. Coasted up to all the rest 15-20 total. To all of you unfamiliar with Florida, I picked blue highways and back roads in VERY rural areas leading to beautiful "Wild Florida" locations near the big lake and Everglades. A few of the roads had higher speed limits, but were 4 lanes so I just had to watch to make sure they went around me. None had minimum speeds and I found a route with no freeways ( the route selection was easy since few routes meet these criteria and Elon's point A to B criteria, but I had only been on 25 pct of these roads ( thank you Google Street View).

    - - - Updated - - -

George called on behalf of both of them and also talked to Adam. This is the type of impression I know will stick with him and I am thankful. I hope he gets to meet them sometime too.

    - - - Updated - - -

Also remember that I have 21s on. Overinflated to the same 50.5 my car was delivered with. This may have emulated some range extension...

    - - - Updated - - -

Amen. The father son experience waswhat this was about for us. If we can help Tesla and the community, even if it is in a small way for us enthusiasts, this is a win-win.

Part of it was proving that we could do our part as well as the car's performance. Doing 50-100 mile ultraruns has helped with the endurance needed to make a long day attempt with just a few minutes out of the car. I look at this as an endurance sport and disciplined/precision driving challenge others may see it differently. My son was in it for the snacks and Guinness attempt :).
  • Dec 8, 2012
    mulder1231
Officially, MPGe is calculated based on the assumption that 33.7 kilowatt hours of electricity is equivalent to one gallon of gasoline. So in your case 78.5 kWh used divided by 33.7 is equivalent to 2.33 gallons used. 423.5 divided by 2.33 equals 181.8 MPGe. This method takes the price per kWh/gallon out of the equation.
  • Dec 8, 2012
    dmetcalf
Adam and I submitted it for review late this week, but it takes 4-6 weeks to get reviewed. I signed all the paperwork and have an official attempt letter/legal agreement, pending their request for evidence and examples. That's why I got Tesla involved...

Thanks didn't see some of these until we were much further north. My main goal was to avoid traffic and maintain constant speed to bring the kWh down. I would have loved some rallying but had to stay focused on the road. 27 near you was some of the fastest roadways on our route and we were on high vigilance to not get rear ended.i spent some time driving in the breakdown lane : ).
