Mango Soooo... has anyone received delivery with the new center console?
If so photos please? I am picking up my S90D Tuesday.
Mar 24, 2016
Soundchasr I feel like this thread is going in circles.
The no-console supporters feel like they're right because the car was designed without a console, "as it should be", and they're just fine without any place to put things because they don't have things to put.
The console supporters feel vindicated by the fact that Tesla now includes one standard because "that's what people want" and they have things that need a place to be put.
Do I have it right?

Mar 24, 2016
TexasEV Yeah, that's about right.
I would also add the stereotype that the EV/tech enthusiasts are anti-standard console and those coming from luxury cars are pro-standard console.
Mar 24, 2016
HookBill Sort of like listening to a debate between Dems and Republicans. Basically, there will be no end.
Mar 24, 2016
skilly I have the best console. Everyone loves my console...its the top of the line console and I spared no expense; no one could have a better console than me.

brianman Shark jumped.
Mar 24, 2016
ohmman Let's pivot to something we all agree upon. The console sounds like something that should be optional (as I believe @brianman said upthread) because there are good arguments for both configurations. I've heard plenty of arguments from people who use the car differently than I do, and I see where they benefit from a console. However, I don't want to be stuck with one since mine would just be in the way.
Agreed? OK, back to the topic - it appears the console is standard without an option. So maybe if someone's ordering a MS, they should ask if it could be optional (assuming that's what they want).
Mar 24, 2016
Cyclone There is precedent for that too. For instance, some people ordered their S with "alcantara delete" on the dash.
When the original fabric headliner was available, the alcantara was a paid upgrade. However, getting it also changed two sections of the dash from black leather to black alcantara (even if you got the white alcantara). However, if you asked, Tesla was able to use some custom codes in the back-end to get the full leather dash instead.
Perhaps something like this would happen?
Mar 24, 2016
Andyw2100 And while the red brake calipers were included in the price when I ordered my P85D, I thought they'd look a little flashy for my tastes on my blue car, so opted not to get them, even though there was no cost savings by opting out of them. Tesla had no problem doing that.
I fear, though, for people interested in ordering a car without a center console, it may not be that simple. I would worry that Tesla is now so into streamlining production, and reducing configuration options, that they may just be standardizing on including the built-in console, and because of the pieces it attaches to, etc., they just can't offer a "no-console" option, because they don't plan to keep purchasing those other parts.
For the sake of those who would want a Tesla without a console, I hope I am wrong.
Mar 24, 2016
ohmman Hey, I did the same thing - black calipers for me as well. I did keep the P85 badging on the back, though.

Mar 24, 2016
DougH For the record they are red calipers not pads.
Mar 24, 2016
Andyw2100 Yes. Thanks. I have already edited my post. (I had seen that ohmman correctly referred to them as calipers, and realized my error.)
Mar 24, 2016
ohmman I knew what you meant. And I knew that you knew what they were. No problem.

Mar 24, 2016
Soundchasr Per Tesla rep, console is standard now, not an option.
Mar 24, 2016
HookBill Sounds like the Ayes have it.
Mar 24, 2016
wdolson I have very long legs too, but I had planned to put a center console in my Model S when I get it. My current car doesn't have one, but it does have door pockets and good storage in the armrest as well as a couple of drawers in the instrument panel. My last car before that had no storage and it looked like a rolling garbage skip much of the time because nothing could be stored anywhere. Having some storage in the car is an important feature to me.
I hear and respect the differing opinions on this. Some women like the open space for their purse. My SO wouldn't, she refuses to carry one. In the winter she uses her jacket pockets and in warmer weather she occasionally carries a small bag that remains strapped to her body (she gets quite angry if anyone calls it a purse) or more usually just uses her pants (trouser) pockets when she is wearing pants with enough pockets. She thinks women who carry duffle bags around are ridiculous.
Other people like the minimalist look of the car without a console.
I think it would be a good idea to enable the center console's removal so people who don't like it can go back to the original look.
Mar 24, 2016
whitex Yep, you can never satisfy everyone. That is why the larger the democracy the larger the minority being discriminated against. Some like the console, some don't. Personally I think I'm one of those who convinced themselves they don't need one. After 3 years of driving without one, I am totally fine without it, yet there are still times where I wish I had one, and most of the time a better cup holder placement than right under my elbow would be reason enough. I also place the seat slightly closer to the steering wheel than I would otherwise do so that I can rest my knee on the bottom corner of the MCU screen rather than it falling into the center hole. So in this case I seem to be in the majority who think a center console is probably a good thing (with all the room it should be nice a roomy). Then again, I am definitely in the minority who wouldn't pick the pano roof even if it was free.
Btw, did anyone who has a confirmed order with a console check with their DS whether the Yacht Floor can be installed as a retrofit removing the console? It would simply reverse the current status where there is no console by default and you have to pay for retrofit to get one, to a new way where you have to pay to remove it by installing Yacht floor retrofit.
Mar 24, 2016
wdolson I don't like the pano roof nor do I like leather seats, though I wish there was a way to mount a roof rack with the standard roof. I wish they would just kill off the existing standard seats and just make the next gen the standard with and without leather.
Mar 24, 2016
Soundchasr Whitex and wdolson - why don't you like the pano roof? Doesn't it give a little more head room and also open to let air in?
Mar 25, 2016
wdolson I don't like having windows above me in a car. According to Bjorn it lets in cold in the winter. I don't live in as cold a climate as Bjorn, but my SO complains bitterly when the temperatures drop below 60 F and the daily highs are below 60 at least 6 months a year around here.
Some cars, the glass has a sliding door so it can be closed off, but the Model S has only the optional sunshade, which doesn't completely block out the world. Open like that, it lets in cold in the winter and heat in the summer.
The cold in the winter and hot in the summer is a major reason I don't like leather seats either.
I'm 6'2" tall, but all my height is below the waist. The standard roof has plenty of headroom for me.
Mar 25, 2016
EVie'sDad Or just perhaps, they had so many orders where customers were adding the center console, that it created additional unnecessary over head between the parts/service department and the assembly line. Considering measures to cut costs, this is one quick way to eliminate having to keep adding a part that is not standardized on the primary model. Probably also the reason behind the recent discontinuation of the 85 battery and the old 5 spoke 19 inch rims.
Mar 25, 2016
whitex I'd have to say added noise (which I notice every time I drive a loaner - my first thought is always "someone left a window cracked"). I know you can get used to the noise, but to me a quiet ride is one of the EV benefits. Another reason is the inability to close off all the light which I find distracting - even in the rain (no shortage of that in Seattle), it's just annoying to see the water flow over the roof and/or dirt accumulate - I feel like it needs a wiper or something). Lastly, I hear no pano makes the car lighter and therefore faster, and the roof is much less likely to leak (no shortage of stories here on that topic).
All my cars in the years leading up to Model S had sunroofs or moonroofs. I didn't want them but was forced to get them as part of packages which included options I did want. I always kept them closed. On rare occasion I would open them thinking it would be nice but then quickly end up closing them once I hit the highway or even earlier because I didn't want the noise, the wind, the blinding sun, and the smell of cars around me. I was happy when I realized I can get a Model S without pano, especially once I realized there is no way to completely cover the pano with a cover from the inside as I did in my other cars. I have no need for the extra headroom. As for letting more the air in, I think you can get plenty of cross winds opening all 4 windows. I do wish I could put up a roof rack, but mostly because I would like to mount my Valentine One radar detector on it since the windshield is metalized which cripples the forward radar sensitivity by 80% or more. I realize that puts me in the minority, but then so does not getting red calipers or badging on the car. I like what I like, and if I'm going to spend that kind of money on a car, I want it to come the way I like it.

zambono Has anybody asked if the new console include rear USB
Mar 25, 2016
Cyclone First and foremost, I respect your choice and there is nothing wrong for you picking what works for you.
I was this post before the S. After reading about how much the pano made a difference to the feel of the "light, airy" look of the car, I got it on mine. I do not regret the choice at all. While I never open it, I enjoy the lightness. Once I got a clear ceramic tint on it, I didn't have heat sinking in (not cold enough for me to note cold soaking in) and no more glare. I enjoy it. That said, the same extra weight, potential leaks, and things to break of a sunroof exist over time and if Tesla offered a fixed glass top as a choice, I would pick that in a heartbeat. That would hopefully include the roof rack hardware too, so then you get a "middle-ground" option for those like me who never open the pano.

4SUPER9 I've been out of town for the past week and missed the explosion of this thread. I perused it a bit, and could not find my answer. Does the new center console have a piano black trim, or is it just plain black material. From the pictures, it looks like the latter.
Now, herein lies my problem: I took delivery of my 85D just a couple of weeks ago, and pre-ordered the center console. It apparently comes in piano black. They say (said) on their website that is was not returnable "once installed". Since mine is not installed, I am wondering if I can return it and ask for one that is not piano black. Interestingly enough, the front console is no longer available in their store. There are plenty of pre-2016 owners out there who are considering one.
Mar 25, 2016
AustinPowers And you have every right to do so.
I am sure I will enjoy my first Tesla just as much, even though it will still be a few years until then, as it will be a Model 3.
Mar 25, 2016
Andyw2100 Yes, from the pictures it definitely looks like the part that had been piano black is just the same material as the rest of the console.
The pictures also make it look like the new console is attached in a way that it is more "part of the car" than the original center console. So while you may be able to not take delivery of the piano black center console you ordered, unless you believe Tesla is about to offer the new console as a stand-alone option on older models, you'd be left with no console at all.
Mar 25, 2016
4SUPER9 I spoke with TM today. They pulled the old center console off the store, and will be making the new center console available "in the coming weeks". They refunded my money since they didn't fulfill the order yet. They said that pricing of the new console is currently not known.
Mar 25, 2016
Wknapp0924 Update on the center console I ordered.
Earlier this week we finalized a new front center console design for Model S. This update will become the new standard for all Model S builds. The integrated design, trimmed in black with chrome accents, features:
- Covered storage with improved sliding cover and removable dividers for custom layout
- Flip-up lid with rubber grips and a pass-through to allow installation of a phone dock kit (purchased separately)
- Retractable rear cup holders that can accommodate up to two cups
The Model S Integrated Console will be made available for purchase through the Tesla Gear site and Service Center locations in the weeks to come. As a current order holder for the first generation Premium Front Console, we would like to offer you an exclusive reservation opportunity. If you wish to purchase the integrated console, this reservation will provide you priority delivery upon parts availability. The price for the new console will be $1250 USD. Shipping and installation are complimentary.
When signing up, please include your VIN or vehicle reservation number. When parts are received by your preferred Service Center, a Service Concierge will contact you to schedule the installation appointment. Payment for the integrated console will be accepted through your Service Center following the installation.
If you would like to keep your original order for the Premium Front Console, it will be sent to your preferred Service Center and a Service Concierge will contact you to schedule the installation appointment after it is received.
At your earliest convenience, please reply to [emailprotected] to indicate which console you would prefer to move forward with. This exclusive offer for order priority of the Model S Integrated Console will end on 4/15/2016. After this date, orders for the integrated console will be placed in the normal queue.
Mar 25, 2016
Andyw2100 That's quite a price bump!
Mar 25, 2016
Wknapp0924 Yes. I am sticking with my first generation console at the lower price.
This one even says a charging kit will be extra on top of the $1250.00.
Mar 25, 2016
jmsurpri I wonder if this is part of the supposed 'price increases' coming..?
Mar 25, 2016
ohmman No way.. everyone has already said it will include a new facelift, Autopilot 2.0, battery upgrade, go-go-gadget spring suspension for avoiding traffic, etc. No chance it's just a console.

zambono Missing rear usb
Mar 25, 2016
commasign Retractable rear cup holders? Does this mean the pop out cup holders from the Model X 2nd row?
Mar 25, 2016
tfung hmm.. I have the first generation center console too.. but no email yet from Tesla about this "enhancement"..
On a similar note, the first generation console is no longer showing up on the official tesla online shop....
Mar 26, 2016
zambono I would guess that yes it has the pop outs the X has. I hope they added the rear usb and forgot to mention.
Mar 26, 2016
Petra I think those of us who like not having a center console are just going to have to get used to the idea of paying a good custom shop to rip out the center console and construct something that matches the original design.
Mar 28, 2016
4SUPER9 I decided to reactivate my original order for my center console. This is a leased vehicle and I am not willing to spend $1,250 + tax ($1362) for some storage. $600 was too much, but a necessity for me.
Mar 28, 2016
pedriscoll When I purchased my 85D the center console was not available. I ordered one and it took about 2 months for delivery and installation. While I got used to the open yacht floor, I really like the look and functionality of the console. I thought it was expensive at $650, so $1250 seems really excessive for the new one, especially without the phone/USB ports included.
Mar 28, 2016
Andyw2100 Pretty sure the USB ports should be where they have always been. They aren't part of the console, but rather are on the area between the two front seats, below the armrest.
Mar 28, 2016
liuping It does seem at that price they could have thrown in the phone connector...
Mar 29, 2016
HeIsAGod Yes I carry a purse. Females do that sometimes
I don't drink coffee in the S, but honestly I would rather clean coffee off it than have to replace the contents of my purse when it empties everywhere from being spilled off the passenger seat.
Or th horror of having to put it on the passengers floor where bottoms of shoes go.
I can appreciate that this is not a concern for a male, or a female who doesn't carry a purse.

scottybrittas Does anyone know if the new integrated centre console is going to be included in the build for any car that hasn't entered production yet? In my case, my order is confirmed and the car has entered the factory production queue.
I had an email two days ago confirming that my wheels had been changed to the new Slipstream style, so I'm sort of expecting to get one soon about the console.
Apr 1, 2016
L-P-G The email was only for those that chose a different wheel and couldn't have it, its been the standard for a while, if you want to verify go to your my Tesla and in your docs section to you'll have a detailed bill of materials
Apr 2, 2016
scottybrittas In my order agreement which was added on 5th March, there's no mention of a centre console (plus I don't believe that they had made it standard on the design studio at the point). It does state "matching yacht floor" though. Consequently it does only say '19" wheels".
If I load the design spec through my tesla, the slipstream wheels are in the images but no mention or image of the centre console. Also, no mention of the yacht floor though, which i suspect gets deleted with the inclusion of a centre console.
Apr 11, 2016
SUN-day Driver Anyone have a delivery in April yet? Did it have the center console?
Apr 11, 2016
cochese I took delivery at the end of March and was surprised with the new console. It would be odd for them to ship some cars with the console, then later revert to no console. I would bet that all Model S built in April will include the new center console.
Apr 11, 2016
HankLloydRight Is your console removable to restore the open floor, or is it one piece with the arm-rest like it is in the Model X?
Apr 11, 2016
Shelt The new console is an integrated one piece unit. I unexpectedly got one in my late March build. It looks almost identical to the X console except it does not have the rear seat pop out drink holders. I haven't tried removing it yet to see it you end up with an open carpeted floor. I'm keeping mine in -- I have too much junk in the car!
Apr 11, 2016
HankLloydRight I'm afraid to think this is just the new way at Tesla, and there won't be an option for "console delete". I've really become accustomed to the open floor.
Apr 11, 2016
EMdoc12 It seems stupid not to have rear seat cupholders or rear usb ports. Its 2016. People want those.
Apr 11, 2016
BoldSharpe Agreed. It almost seems like the person responsible for the new console design was hired away by Apple midway through and Tesla decided to release it anyway.

Apr 11, 2016
cochese One piece with arm rest.
I'm pretty happy with it though. Found a USB extension cable with left angle plug that easily routed through the available routing hole, under the cup holders and pops up nice and out-of-sight near the back of the console. I plugged in a 256 GB memory stick to create a really clean, hidden source for music. Easy to remove the memory stick too, just pull out the front most cup holder piece and unplug.
Apr 12, 2016
SUN-day Driver Excellent! I ordered mine in March (before the console appeared online) and it just finished production so I expect mine will have it too. I can get rid of my little organizer caddy bag I used in my 2013 S. Woo Hoo!
