Unknowns part 2

spatters0911, Fabulous report! Absolutely great. Thanks a million. Did the engineer give you an idea whether they are going to ditch the current cup holders altogether and relocate them as a standard feature or will anything different be an option (i.e. cost money)?

lol, estimates were above his pay grade?

I think the December estimate given in spatters0911's report seems reasonable

Thanks for the updates. Very interesting things underway.

Wonder what that will do to the number of people who will take the one time deferment...and the goal of 5,000 deliveries in 2012.
  • Jul 2, 2012
    Jason S
Could be interesting. It'll definitely separate the people who just want to drive the car immediately from the people who want the whole luxury experience.

It doesn't appear that there is a significant downside to taking earlier delivery, other than the retrofit process being a huge workload for the Tesla Rangers.

    spatterso911
I got the impression that they feel it's a big F-. It may be swapped for something else, but he didn't elaborate, just that the opportunity options are going to number around 3-4
  • Jul 2, 2012
    spatterso911
Yeah, they will likely have to figure out a retrofit program for the sig deliveries and some of the production deliveries.

    One other tidbit of information...

    I know who got VIN#'s 9-12!

    PM for information...

The delivery of 11 and 12 is news. Isn't it? :)

    Great report! What would
mean? Quicker 0-60 times? I'm getting the performance version anyway so shouldn't make much difference just wondering what the motor change would mean since it will likely happen after I get my car.

Thanks for all that splatters. Some notes/questions of my own in red:

I have other unknowns I haven't seen discussed.

    1) Will a Model S be allowed to go through an automatic car wash? Roadsters aren't allowed -- must be hand washed.

    2) Does any of the glass in the car block radio/ radar waves? Some solar-control windshields or side and back windows have silver-based coatings that short out signals to radar detectors and RFID toll transponders.

Not sure where to post this, but since it's an "unknown" for me:

Is it known yet, now that the first Model S are out, what the annual maintenance cost is?

Very excited to hear the news about the power folding mirrors making it into the production models. Hopefully, it'll be ready by the time I take delivery in late December or January.

Does anyone know if they also plan to add a blind spot monitoring system to the mirrors in the future?
  • Jul 2, 2012
    qwk
I think it has been posted that the maintenance is free for the first 4 years or 50k miles(warranty period).

At a recent track event they had a prototype adapter using a Roadster UMC to recharge a Model S.
As expected, it seems totally confirmed that the Model S charge port is electrically compatible with J1772 and Roadster charging as long as you can get a physical adapter to mate the two connectors.

Something to keep in mind about high top speed is that it requires sustained max power output. Heat build up becomes a problem when you do continuous high power output, so the existing cooling system might not be "up to snuff" if they provided taller gearing without upgrading other things too. The battery pack might not like providing high sustained current either.

  • Jul 2, 2012

And another question I was wondering about: To get the advertised zero-to-sixty time in the Roadster you have to charge in Performance mode, which is not recommended. In the Model S is there a not-recommended performance mode that gives you the advertised acceleration, and a Standard mode (like in the Roadster) which gives you less than maximum range and less than maximum acceleration, but is better for battery longevity?
  • Jul 2, 2012
    spatterso911
Never saw a performance mode. The charging screen displays range mode charging and standard charging. All the videos of the performance accelerating demonstrate the advertised time, but no hint that the car was in a different setting.

I asked about this and it is wrong. The only difference between the S and the Roadster is they dropped the yellow color. all other features are the same. Green now flashes with speed of flash based on battery fullness. Light count does neot change.

The car plug by the way has an electromagnet to hold the charge plug in. The plug switch turns it off.
  • Jul 2, 2012
    CapitalistOppressor
That would affect top speed as opposed to 0-60 times. By upping RPM they can increase top end speed without changing anything else on the car. Otherwise you need to change the gear ratio, which would reduce 0-60 times, or install a transmission of some sort which would moot everything anyways.

Apparent no one has made a Model S plug to Roadster socket yet.

We shall see how this all plays out...Tesla told me that all Roadster charging equipment will be compatible with the Model S, and the Model S wall charger is really not necessary if you have a Roadster HPC. A lot of dual Roadster & Model S owners may end up with an extra charge cable.
  • Jul 3, 2012
    DrComputer
Yes, there is supposed to be an "adapter" for HPC owners to allow us to charge our S with the existing HPC. I have yet to see (or get the price) for said adapter. Not sure it will be a cable or just and adapter. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

A new cable won't help charge both the S and the Roadster. Either way an adapter will be needed.

Nope, 220/240 TS-70 from Clipper Creek.

Wouldn't it be wiser for Tesla to convert the existing TS-70's to the new format, and make the Roadster owners buy or provide them with an adapter for the new format connector rather than have two competing formats within their own fleet?

I'm sorry if this has already been asked. I tried to do a search but the results were so many that it was hard to look through to find the answer.

Does anyone know if the Model S will have heated seats? What about cooled seats? Also, does it have automatic rain sensor wipers?
  • Jul 3, 2012
    Lloyd
    Yes heated seats

    No cooled seats

    Yes rain sensor

Great! Thanks for the info. I was originally told no rain sensor so I am glad to hear.

I wish the doors would open at an angle like the Aston Martin's do. Can I add that to the wish list?

Not sure how I feel about this, most Tesla stores have 2 TS-70 stations. What Tesla should be doing is adding two additional charging stations (to these stores) with the Model S connector. Why force Roadster owners to purchase yet another adapter just to charge at the mall?
  • Jul 3, 2012
    strider
In the Roadster you also have to drive in Perf mode to unlock all of the power.

But for Model S, there is just Standard and Range mode. No Perf or Storage modes.

In prototype form (orange cable as seen at Refuel races):
    orange.jpg
The right angle on the Roadster end suggests that they just re-purposed some Roadster socket part for this instance.
So they are least testing them now.
Not sure if production will remain as a cable or if they will switch to a stubby adapter that fits the S charge port socket.

Thanks for keeping this thread going!

Can someone bring an iPod cable and iPhone to a test drive event. I wanna see what happens!

There are so many questions I would have loved to ask during the test drive, but once he said floor it, I forgot.

RE: front plate, I was told at LA test drive that design is almost done and "will be integrated" i.e. not a bolt on like the red sig shown during the delivery event.

Will it be a custom nose cone or did they know?
  • Jul 7, 2012
    Trnsl8r
I heard from a store rep that it will be a contraption that attaches to the grille below the nose cone without drilling holes.

EDIT: "without". Sorry about that everyone. Brain fart.

Awesome. Thank you Tesla for listening. I had been asking for a long time when I got my Roadster and didn't understand why that couldn't have been a summer intern side project or something. Glad they are working on this with the Model S.

Thought I'd ask a question i raised in my "driving EVs out of range" thread:

Does anyone know if a charge-port locks the charge cable in place while the car is being charged?

Can 14 year old boys who watch beavis and butthead and have far too much time on their hands walk along and disconnect my car?

    Thanks
  • Jul 9, 2012
    Doug_G
Reportedly, yes, it locks, but any Model S owner can unlock it. I suppose that may be to support plug sharing, or maybe a shortcut for simplicity not having to code the transmitters for each car, or both.

The picture in the link shows something interesting about the 3G/4G connectivity. The label just above the TM representative's hand shows what looks like the ESN number of the mobile connectivity device.
