Two new features none of us know about part 1

  • Sep 3, 2015
    Robbo
Barron's summarized a research report from Trip Chowdry ( Tesla: The Tweets Have It - Stocks to Watch - Barrons.com ) and in it Trip says "There are still at least 2 new features in Model X, that none of us know about"

Not quite sure how Trip knows that but........

    let the rampant speculation begin.

Someone educate me here. Why do people care so much about LED headlights? Yes, they are better than other existing technologies, but I don't see how this is going to delight customers. Not even worthy of camouflage in my opinion. Moves the needle very little for me, and i'm guessing, most consumers would feel the same also.

LED headlights is not listed under features in the leaked design studio images. It's widely rumored to be a feature but I don't know that Tesla ever said it officially.

That being said, I'd be disappointed with Tesla if this was one if "unknown features". It's industry standard fir high end vehicles now.

    Therefore my vote is:
    1. No cross beam front screen extending far back (remember no pictures of the car from the sides or front in the leaked images)
    2. 360 degree cameras with very cool software features for parking and maneuvering.

360 camera is one of the best new innovations in vehicle safety in a long time. I have it now on our GL we bought because I couldn't wait any longer for the X, we needed a 7 person SUV in April. I told my son's friends that the 360 camera was really a camera on a selfie stick that pops up out of the roof when they asked how the picture had the car in it, and of course the believed it for a few minutes until I explained how it really worked. They really missed a huge opportunity if it's not an option on the X.

It wouldn't move the needle for me either, but LED headlights are immensely more efficient than halogen or low voltage xenon headlights. Life expectancy is upt to 25x higher, energy consumption is about one tenth of halogen. Full LED headlights would simply fit perfectly to Tesla's energy efficiency narrative and would also reduce energy consumption somewhat.

Do the unknown new features have to be new technology?

It's definitely not as sexy or fancy as windows and headlights, but one possibility is a kneeling air suspension that helps load cargo in the back. It's not new technology, but a long travel suspension would also help raise the vehicle when needed to clear obstacles. This helps the "utility" street cred.

Whatever they bring out, there will be some element of disappointment associated with it, so it will probably be "Interesting, but not really usable".

    I'm voting for:

    2) Spare tire - but requires you to remove the 3rd row seats to get to it

Those would both be very useful but don't fall into the secret "bells and whistles" category for me. I don't think adding those would've delayed the X much at all. I'm thinking there has to be some kind of gadget or new technology which was responsible for the delays (besides the falcon wing doors and second row seats) based on comments that Elon made back in February.
  • Sep 3, 2015

My signature summary of course lists many possibilities in many categories, but what I'm personally hoping for is next-generation driver assistance hardware made it to the Model X Sig already, and not come, say, six months after Sigs only. After all, Elon said they were working on a step beyond the current auto-pilot for the Model X. Hopefully this includes the likes of new radars, all-around cameras, new GPUs and innovative software use thereof.

360 degree dashcam constantly recording to a local SSD, 48 hours worth of constant HD footage 360, no matter if the car is parked or moving. The ability for the user to access this and pull out clips (for evidence or just for fun), have the video feed time stamped and tagged for events such as being bumped in to while parked, and of course accidents such as sudden deceleration, flipping over and such things.

Also, if the car is in an accident we know Tesla sometimes call right after to see if the owner is OK - I've read of several instances of this (first that comes to mind is when dmundjal was in a bad crash where he let his landscaper test drive). I think it could be several things triggering such an alert at Tesla HQ, one obvious thing would be having airbags deploy.

Anyway, imagine how cool it would be if the car in the case of such an event started feeding 360 video to Tesla HQ (assuming the systems are still intact or semi-intact and the car has internet connection) where they could help assess the situation, guide first responders etc.

    Guess on yet-to-be Revealed Features

A stick-on rearview mirror would look pretty silly on that large windshield IMHO. Perhaps the rearview camera will be output via HUD (Heads Up Display) and every square inch of that glorious windshield will be clear! Perhaps covering up the top portion of the windscreens on the mules had a dual purpose. There may even be sideview cameras integrated into the side mirrors. How cool would it be if SW stitched all three images together and displayed a single seamless ears-back-view via HUD! Wishful thinking?

I'm thinking this too, I wonder however if they've gone a step further and incorporated this into the back up camera somehow ? Keep in mind that big beautiful windshield; I wonder if the designers wanted to keep that panorama look and there is no mirror attached to the windshield - it's either at the top of the dash or incorporated into the main screen ? Perhaps even in the instrument clustre ??
  • Sep 4, 2015
    MorrisonHiker
I'm pretty sure a rearview mirror is a legal requirement. If a display broke, the car would still need a way of viewing towards the rear and a low tech mirror would provide that. The Gentex Hybrid Mirror/Display does both and would still provide rearward visibility if the display in the hybrid mirror broke.

I'm also wondering if they could have Gorilla Glass for the windshield.
  • Sep 4, 2015

oh really ? didn't know that a RVM is a legal requirement - hmmm
  • Sep 4, 2015
    MorrisonHiker
They are in many states but I don't know about the provinces. I guess side mirrors can qualify in the case that you don't have a rear window at all or if the view through the rear window is obstructed.
  • Sep 4, 2015
    MileHighMotoring
I'm not sure about that - it's legal to have solid panel vans with no rear visibility so I can't imagine they require a rear mirror on those, lol. Side mirrors, yes.
  • Sep 4, 2015
    MorrisonHiker
Reading the laws more closely, it sounds like you are correct. The driver's side mirror seems to always be required and the passenger side mirror is sometimes required. It's just a requirement overall that one has to have a view to the rear. Maybe the rear view mirror isn't required...but I would prefer it to looking down at the screen.

most minvans have that taken care of with a smaller concave mirror in the ceiling where the sunglasses holder is. you can see the entire second row seat and the tops of the third row with it. Works well for short kids that aren't in the normal field of view for the rear view mirror since it's centered on the back window, not the second row seats.

Yes but why limit to 200W? I think the utility and marketing value of being able to use your Model X to run your refrigerator in a power outage or at a campsite etc is worth this upgrade. After all, it's kind of like a power wall with wheels!
  • Sep 5, 2015
    MorrisonHiker
I don't think a refrigerator is the best example. Modern refrigerators use surprisingly little power. Mine uses like 50 watts...but I know where you are going. I would definitely like to be able to use the battery to power home devices in emergencies. I don't think they will allow that any time soon since supercharging is free.
  • Sep 5, 2015
    Yggdrasill
You're right, refrigerators use very little energy, but I think that's average. It's probably more like 500 watts 10% of the time, as the compressor starts and stops.
  • Sep 5, 2015
    Aljohn
If there were a AC outlet, it would be limited due to the size of the DC to AC converter. It isn't the size of the battery, but the hardware to convert the DC power to 50-60 cycle AC to run a small appliance. Running your 200Amp house requires a rather LARGE converter, as would at 500 KW refrigerator.
  • Sep 5, 2015
    spottyq
deonb, that would be a great feature imho !

As to why it has to be limited, there are multiple arguments to be made.
    1) Cost. Inverters aren't cheap. (And the more power you need, the higher the cost, obviously.) 2500W inverters working off 12V cost something like 1400 around here (retail). Tesla would be working off 400VDC; I can't say if it is easier to design an inverter to work from 400VDC or 12VDC.
    2) They would have to design two versions, 120V/60Hz and 220V/50Hz for different markets * multiple different sockets.
    3) Power electronics get hot; you need to be able to evacuate the heat somehow. With a higher power rating, you've got more heat to evacuate. (I've known a car where the inverter would shut itself down after half an hour from overheating at 75% of it's rated load !)
    4) Realistically, most people will only use them to recharge laptop batteries for themselves or the kids in the back seat. No need for more than 120W here.
    5) Then there's the whole stealing electricity from superchargers issue that can be greatly limited with a low power rating of the inverter.

I can understand the need of a high power inverter in a work truck (like VIA is doing.) But I doubt a high power inverter is an economically feasible option for Tesla's market.

[Edit :] Well, it seems I type quite slowly ! MorrisonHiker, Yggdrasill, and Aljohn all posted before me ! :)

    1. Each cup-holder will come with a water pump linked to a system directly adapted from the Space Station, thanks to a partnership between Tesla, SpaceX and NASA. The Water Recycling System will reclaim waste waters from urine, oral hygiene and hand washing, and by condensing humidity from the air.
    2. Next to Ludicrous, a Mars mode can be selected that turns the Model X into a training ground for people who want to test life on Mars. Basically, at first, it will merely be impossible to exit the car for one year; your car needs to be plugged into your garage charger to activate this mode. The driver's window will be lowered 5 inches once a week for 10 minutes to allow your family to transfer food. Thanks to a software update available when it is finally ready, communication with a bot simulating a NASA space mission engineer will be offered for free, with a real-life, Tesla exclusive, ten-minute delay. Successful Model X astronauts will be offered a "Drink pee ! A small sip for a man, a giant leap for a Martian" t-shirt, and a 10% discount on future SpaceX public missions to Mars, starting in summer to late 2018 +/- 80 years.
