apacheguy (Edit: title should say Moisture)
Just noticed this in two spots on my 17":
![]()
I had annual service done a couple months ago and they "visually inspected cooling system for leaks" but found none. I just can't think of what else it could be. Thoughts?
Aug 16, 2015
AmpedRealtor I remember someone had their touch screen replaced a few months ago over the same issue. That's not a leak. If I remember correctly, it was the touch screen glass de-laminating and/or allowing air bubbles to enter where they shouldn't. LCD screens already contain liquid, so what you are seeing is most likely an air bubble.
Oct 3, 2015
apacheguy Repair came in at $2900 for this. Unsure whether it included a new MCU or just a touchscreen replacement.
Oct 3, 2015
DCWitt Covered by warranty?
Oct 3, 2015
MikeInFL Covered under 4/50 warranty. reach out to your local service center.
Oct 3, 2015
AWDtsla 2900 for an LCD display would be ridiculous.
Oct 3, 2015
nrcooled Had the same issue on my touch screen and it was taken care of under warranty.
Oct 3, 2015
apacheguy Just past 50 K unfortunately. No warranty.
Yeah, was hoping that was the cost of the entire MCU but seems like just the screen. Will know more when I get it back next week.
Oct 3, 2015
MikeInFL I would request a "goodwill" repair from Service. Something along the lines of customer satisfaction for purchasing a $100k car and the screen is falling apart not even 3 years later (assuming the earliest MS being a 2012 model)
Oct 4, 2015
brkaus And screen really isn't mileage dependent, so feels like it would be reasonable to ask.
Oct 4, 2015
aaron.s All -
Have the same problem - and I do believe its the touchscreen glass separating from the LCD, but to a much more extreme level. Mine is peeling along the left edge from the middle of the display all the way to the top, then curving and going across the top and then curving again and going down the right side to the middle.
I stopped by my service center and had my advisor take and look and she concurred and took some pictures and said she would order me a new screen. Luckily I got the extended warranty which is still in effect. Will report back after the screen has been fixed.
Aaron
PS - Have a matte screen protector on my touchscreen if you're wondering why its not glossy!

Oct 4, 2015
shokunin My 2012 P85 is having the same issue, yesterday I got a "touchscreen needs service message" on my console. I have 6-7" long bubble on the right hand side, but not as bad as aaron's. Time to bring in for a long list of small fixes.
Oct 4, 2015
AmpedRealtor I'm with the others, you should request this be covered as "good will". It's patently ridiculous that this touch screen - arguably one of the hallmarks of this car - is falling apart after only 2-3 years. Someone else in the forums had their MCU replaced at no charge after warranty expired. It's completely unreasonable to expect a failure of this component after such a short time. Instead of the touch screen, if the car had hard knobs and controls, you would not be spending $2,900 to fix.
Oct 4, 2015
johnnyS Mine looks like aaron.s. I am at 45,000 miles so I have a little time. It has been this way for some time.
Oct 4, 2015
AWDtsla $2900 is an insane price no matter how you look at it. What happened to not making service a profit center for Tesla? For that price you could replace the broken LCD on 26 iPhones. Or you could buy a 70" 4k TV and still have enough left to get a flight to Japan.
I replaced the 15" retina display on my macbook pro for only $250 last week after I dropped it on the floor. It's a much more advanced display than the one in the Model S.
Oct 4, 2015
apacheguy Aaron - mine looked similar to yours at the time of replacement on the upper right corner. It does worsen over time. I only hope the replacement unit does not have the same issue recur in another 3 years.
Agree with others that $2900 does not seem fair for a part that lasted less than 3 years on a $100 K car and has absolutely nothing to do with being slightly over 50 K miles. I'm still deciding how to approach this.
Oct 4, 2015
brkaus Between this and stories of $1000 door handle, I think this dream car for me may be out of my price range.
Oct 5, 2015
bob_p Compared to an ICE, the Model S has relatively few moving parts - and the most expensive parts, the motor and battery, are protected for 8 years and unlimited miles. And, the rest of the car can be covered for 8 years and up to 100,000 miles with purchase of the extended warranty. I've had my Model S since early 2013 and have over 57K miles on it - and I'm not worried about the long-term reliability and purchased the 8 year maintenance and warranty with my car.
The problem with the touchscreen could have been a problem related to using a touchscreen on such a large display - in a car, that is subject to heat and cold - and, hopefully, they've adjusted the design of the touchscreen to avoid this problem.
My touchscreen had this problem and was replaced several months ago. Is this a problem only with the earlier production units? Or is this problem also happening on the recent cars???
Oct 5, 2015
tom66 I have seen a similar effect on smart phones. It is due to the glue de-laminating from the LCD panel, probably due to thermal cycles. Eventually, it will get to the point where the touches will not be registered properly (probably causing the "Touchscreen Needs Service" message.)
Oct 5, 2015
apacheguy Yeah, it probably has to do with the high heat stress and solar loading on the cabin. It wasn't terribly reassuring that when I first notified Tesla about it two months ago, the tech had me answer a series of questions suggesting engineering is still trying to determine the cause. If the replacement unit lasts less than 3 years like the first one did I won't be terribly happy. Sure hope they beefed up the adhesive that was delaminating.
Oct 5, 2015
DillyBop does the touchscreen work on the areas affected by the air bubble? or does the air bubble kill the touch functionality?
Oct 5, 2015
brkaus Thus far, on my Acura, my only failures are Bluetooth module ($450), Navigation/DVD unit (sent to Alpine to repair $150), tires (ugh), brake pads (did at home) and now up for power steering rack, shocks, tie rod ends, etc. Nothing related to the drivetrain and all parts that have similar components on the Model S (except brake wear). My car is 10 years old and has 130k miles.
I do want a Model S. It is a significantly nicer & larger (and everything else) car than my Acura no doubt about it. As such, it does cost more. At this time, I can make the clearly listed prices work including fuel savings, but I'm concerned about the unknown costs in the future (and the potential impact on resale prices). I can (and would) do the extended warranty. Would like to lease, but the way the EV incentive increases the residual and the sales tax on the complete value here in Texas makes it hard to justify.
Stories like this make me think I'm more of a Model 3 type person for the momentA couple of door handles and a screen is a pretty big chunk of change.

Oct 5, 2015
AWDtsla Nothing about either part is special. If they're in the Model 3, they'll be the same price (unless Tesla charges differently)
Oct 5, 2015
brkaus Hopefully lower in the future, but yes, that likely applies to both vehicles. The difference is that with the 3 I would have more cash in my pocket to afford it.
Oct 5, 2015
DillyBop
how is the "high heat stress" any different from any other car?
Oct 8, 2015
shokunin Just an update, I posted a page back that i had a bubble on my screen and got a call from my local service center regarding it. I give kudos to the Tesla Costa Mesa service center for proactively calling me to schedule a service and take down any other issues for them to fix when I drop it off.
Oct 8, 2015
apacheguy It's not. But then again other cars don't have an advanced glass touchscreen like the MS does.
Oct 9, 2015
bob_p The difference in the Model S could be the larger display size - currently the only 17" touch screen in a car...
Oct 9, 2015
tliving Would love to hear more on out-of-warranty period experiences. Im 2K miles from the extended warranty decision and trying to make the decision. At 30K miles a year it will only last me 18 months. At $2900 (if its the only thing that happens) I'm still ahead of the game on a $4K warranty... Trying to figure out what the gamble looks like
Oct 9, 2015
russman Don't forget the extended warranty has a one time deductible for each item that is out of warranty, not each trip (ie you can't save up everything and then go in and pay a single deductible.)
I'm concerned about the long-term issues as I have purchased extended warranties for all my cars, but none were this expensive and none had deductibles. So at this point, I'm at 30k with a little over a year, making it not worth it for basically 3.5 years of warranty coverage.

Oct 9, 2015
apacheguy
FWIW, I got a free LTE upgrade out of this issue. Along with a few other issues which were covered under goodwill.
Oct 10, 2015
tliving Thanks. Im going to spend some quality time with the Extended Warranty text this weekend and make a decision. Im leaning towards passing on it just based on these and other discussions.
Oct 14, 2015
FredTMC So you are saying they replaced it under 'goodwill'. No cost to you...
i I should certainly hope so...
TIA
Oct 19, 2015
Vip Since we are considering this occurring because of heat stress then how many of you who have this problem have the pano roof?
Oct 19, 2015
apacheguy I do not.
Oct 22, 2015
demundus I've got this on my 2013 with 65K miles in SoCal. SC quoted me $4600 ahead of time, not sure if it will fall under goodwill, I can only hope... or I'll have bubbles in my touchscreen for as long as I own this car.
Oct 22, 2015
AWDtsla They should consider its negative advertising to anyone that rides in your car... It's only a 2013.
Oct 22, 2015
Maaz More bad news about model s reliability. Makes the decision for the extended warranty even harder.
Oct 22, 2015
apacheguy At $4000 + $200 deductible per item I wouldn't recommend it.
Estimate seems high. Let me know what it ends up coming out to.
Oct 22, 2015
russman Agree, at $4k plus $200 and the fact that I'll use up 100k miles in about 5 years just makes it too expensive. Feel free to re-tweet elon with the tweet I sent!
https://twitter.com/russwong/status/657203610569216000
Everyone wants the ESA, but the cost is just out there, but the fact that we're expecting things like this out of warranty just shows our concern....
Oct 22, 2015
AWDtsla One touchscreen replacement away from break-even? Hmmmm
Oct 22, 2015
russman I don't think it's right to look at it like that. Let's say if your mileage was within limits and you had 10 items go bad, that's an additional $2k just in deductible.
So if the ESA was $6k + $2k, but if the it was 4 door handles, the trunk, the sunroof, the display, and the chair and all those items cost $20k to fix, would it be okay to pay $8k for the ESA?

demundus
Yeah and mine is in the same location as everyone elses... just right of the traffic and geo icons on a full screen'd map. See this image link from another thread i had started:
http://www.teslamotorsclub.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=98438&d=1445216412
Oct 23, 2015
apacheguy I just hope they reengineered the touchscreen so this doesn't happen on my new Rev -M in 3 years.
Oct 24, 2015
bob_p It's likely they had problems with pairing the touchscreen layer to the display - and what was done with the earlier productions models has since been corrected to provide a longer life solution - that works in the hot and cold temperature ranges the displays will see in the cars.
Touchscreen displays have been in cars and relatively hostile environments for many years - the only major change for Tesla is using a much larger display (17") than what has been present in other cars - so I'm confident they can figure this out - and make a long term change that will eliminate this problem.
Nov 7, 2015
johnnyS I scheduled an appointment with service for mine to be replaced next week. We are in Southern California near the coast in Orange County so heat is not really a factor.
Nov 7, 2015
demundus Same, I'm about .5 miles from the ocean, garage kept... Still got the bubbles

Nov 7, 2015
ryanjm No pics (silly me), but I visited my family in AZ last month and my cousin, who has a February 2013 build P85, has this issue at multiple corners of his touchscreen. He's still under warranty so he'll be fine, but just another data point to this thread: early build + subject to the extreme heat of AZ.
Nov 10, 2015
Navyguy ALL dealers are ridiculous so I wouldn't doubt that was just an LCD replacement. BUT i also wouldn't doubt if you can't get JUST the LCD replaced and its the whole unit.
Nov 10, 2015
apacheguy It was the entire MCU. No option to just replace the screen assembly.
Nov 12, 2015
Dave5609 I'm also having this issue on a 2013 Model S. Noticed the small bubbles a couple months ago and they have unfortunately evolved into increasingly widening and lengthening streaks along the sides of the screen. To make it worse..I now have a strange sticky gel leaking out the bottom of the screen. No idea whether this stuff is toxic..but it definitely ruins anything it drips on. I'm unfortunately out of warranty as well...50,100 miles if you can believe it. Still frustrated they weren't willing to make some accommodation for an owner that's been with them since the beginning..though understand at some point![]()
customers would become more of a commodity. Wondering if this might become a recall issue if it happens to enough people.

Nov 12, 2015
demundus Did you ask them for a goodwill fix? I haven't gotten in to my SC yet.
Nov 12, 2015
shokunin They wouldn't recall, but rather just extend the warranty for the display. I just had my 2012's LCD replaced under the 4/50 warranty. Those of us in SoCal may want to also watch out for water intrusion into the hatch from the tail lights. My 2012 had leaky seals and my wife's 2013 is now leaking with the recent rain we've had. When the hatch is raised, water would pour down from within the hatch through lift gate button.
Nov 12, 2015
johnnyS Got my touch screen replaced today--I am at 47,000 miles. It led to another issue--my dash lacewood broke somewhere during the replacement so they also replaced all the wood inlay. Of course lacewood is no longer available, but before it was discontinued they tried a darker version than what was installed in the early cars. They only have the darker version in stock. So for it to match they had to replace all my wood inlay including the center cup holders. I have not seen it in daylight yet. The service center seemed very concerned about making the change. I may not have autopilot, but I do have lacewood!
The touch screen looks much better. I lost a few settings such as our profiles and bluetooth pairing. I also had them replace one of the day time running lights (actually entire headlight) since it was partially out.
Soon I enter the unknown--out of warranty pay out of pocket.
Nov 12, 2015
islandbayy Strange you lost your settings. The service centers are now able to replace the display only, and not the entire computer system. This was a cost measure, to avoid needing to have a $3,000 repair bill to replace a touch screen.
Nov 13, 2015
demundus I have this too!!! I thought I was crazy, though I'll gladly trade a touch screen fix for a leaky hatch.
Nov 13, 2015
apacheguy I can confirm this is not the case. They had to replace the entire MCU when I had this done last month.
Nov 13, 2015
johnnyS Some of the settings remained such as the radio presets, and the various toggle settings under the controls. The new lacewood looks good in the daylight and I am sure glad this extra work was done under warranty.
Nov 24, 2015
aaron.s All -
Finally got my MCU replaced today. Worried that I would get a remanufactured unit that could potentially develop the same problem I was pleased to find out that I got a brand new recently manufactured MCU with 4g (I had previously purchased and had the 4g module installed in my old MCU). I do have the extended warranty on my car (almost over @ 82k miles) and was charged the $200 deductible. I was surprised to find out that equipment replaced during service carries only a 12 month, 12k mile warranty (less than a year for me!) - so here's hoping I don't encounter this problem again!
To my pleasant surprise, contrary to what has been discussed here, my odometer data made it over in the data transfer from my old MCU!!!
Aaron

Nov 24, 2015
apacheguy My trip meters transferred as well. What is the part number of your replacement MCU?
Nov 24, 2015
aaron.s Here is is:
TOUCH SCREEN WITH NAVIGATION AND 1 PREMIUM AUDIO - NORTH AMERICA (1004777-00-M)
CABLE TIE EDGE CLIP (1015212-00-A) 1
Never had premium audio - and nothing seems changed in the audio settings. one REALLY nice thing though - the higher resolution screen is so nice compared to my original MCU from 2013!!!
Aaron
PS - I did have to re-pair my phone with the car - not surprising since it was a different bluetooth module in the new MCU.
Nov 24, 2015
apacheguy Not sure about higher res. Ingineer checked the LCD on his MCU and it is exactly the same part number as in 2013. Also, it apparently still runs a Tegra 3.
Nov 25, 2015
aaron.s I have no doubt its still running on a Tegra 3 - but the LCD itself is clearly higher resolution than the one I originally had....
Aaron
Apr 7, 2016
majgill Yup I got the same problem my vin is 1955 and I am at 78k miles and I am not sure when these air bubles came so I was also quoted close to 3k as I am out of warranty. I think tesla service should really look at the early vin's and they keep saying this is rare problem. They need to come here and I thought it was only mine till I found this thread. They really need to replace this unit atleast once as a goodwill.
Apr 7, 2016
johnnyS The touchscreen that was replaced a few months ago in our car was a re-manufactured unit. A few weeks ago when I we had our 50,000 mile service I told them the software updates were not installing correctly. I got the car back and I still was getting daily messages every morning "software not able to install." So back to the service center now with 51,500 miles. They replaced the touchscreen again at no charge. This time all settings and memory were wiped clean. Fortunately they never mentioned a charge. Touchscreen number three is also a re-manufactured unit.
Apr 8, 2016
apacheguy Warranty replacements must default to refurbed units while out of warranty gets new. Wonder if they allowed refurb out of warranty if there would be a substantial price reduction?
Jun 4, 2016
DFibRL8R I am curious about the cause of this problem because I would prefer to avoid this problem (duh).
Several have speculated that heat-cold cycles could be a factor. Those affected are from various regions of the US (NY, Virginia, SoCal, AZ) so climate does not seem to be an issue.
What about screen brightness setting? It can be adjusted manually from 0-100% and the brightest setting certainly generates more heat. Where those affected keeping the screen brightness on a higher setting? What about a screen protector which might cause greater heat retention? Curious if there are any trends that might benefit those of us interested in avoiding or at least delaying a $2900 repair. I try to keep my screen dim and I have it set so brightness is adjustable with the jog dial on the steering wheel so I can quickly dial it up if needed in glare situations etc. Also no screen protector for me.
Jun 4, 2016
tliving I have a screen protector on (and have since I got the car a couple years ago) but I keep the brightness pretty low (30%?) as I don't like too much light off it. Haven't had any issues with the screen. So data point of 1 but the screen protector doesn't seem to cause an issue. And we have plenty of weather cycles here in New England.
Jun 4, 2016
apacheguy Nope. Screen brightness very low, usually 10-20%, and no screen protector.
Jun 4, 2016
AWDtsla This is plain and simple a manufacturing defect, the screen is delaminating. I don't think there's any user behavior that will change the outcome.
Jun 5, 2016
DFibRL8R OK, thanks. Seems like keeping the brightness low couldn't hurt longevity but in your case didn't prevent a failure.
Jun 19, 2016
DFibRL8R ![]()
NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Jul 26, 2016
cdf3 My touch screen started displaying bubbles underneath the glass. My vehicle is no longer under warranty. I've had to repair all 4 failing door handles, a leaking Pano Roof, a leaking hatchback, door seals, rear camera, and now perhaps a failing touch screen. All repairs have been out of pocket. I've already spend well over 6k in repairs. With the car being only 3 years old, I'm starting to question how reliable it will be a few more years from now.
Jul 26, 2016
demundus That's intense.
Jul 26, 2016
odguy I'm awaiting delivery of my MS but these reports definitely have me thinking about that extended warranty. those that have it are SCs lenient with the $200 deductible? Its already $4000 then it says $200 deductible per visit.
Jul 27, 2016
Vip Did you have an issues when the car was under warranty?
Aug 7, 2016
sbgator90 I noticed slight vertical bubbling at edge of screen and didn't think much of it at the time and didn't take it to the service center as I am not much of a nit picker. I was in the mid 40k on the odometer range and what a mistake it was to not immediately take it in at that time. The car now has 60k miles and the bubbling has gotten much worse since around 55k miles and it is now oozing some gel glue like substance from the bottom...took me about three weeks to figure out it wasn't my wife or kid spilling something in my console. I guess I'll go to the service center this week to see what this doozy is going to cost. I highly encourage EVERYONE under warranty to MONITOR this very CLOSELY until they are completely out of warranty. Based on my forum reviews, it looks like it is happening to a lot of cars at about the 3 year mark in age. This is a very obvious material defect and will effect most cars produced with the same material!!!
Aug 7, 2016
sbgator90 I've done the door handles, headlights and now my screen is oozing gel at the bottom after forming bubbles starting about 15k miles ago and having gotten much worse in last few thousand. So much for the low cost maintenance I was hoping for. I had two BMW 5's in a row with 100k miles each and never paid a cent for a repair. Only routine maintenance. TESLA appears to have a long way to go on manufacturing for precision and durability....
Aug 7, 2016
DFibRL8R If you don't mind posting what parts and labor ends up costing, curious what I'm going to have to shell out for this. Upthread $2,900 was mentioned

Aug 8, 2016
demundus $2900 is still the sticker I have been quoted. I took my touchscreen leak all the way up to regional service manager. I got a "split it with you" deal... Still deciding if its worth half price. No one left to complain to, no one left to care

Aug 8, 2016
William13 Vin520 here. Bubbles started at 55,000 miles and 3 years. Screen protector and brightness around 70% most of the time. Bubbles slowly worsening, no goo yet. Plan to replace if needed or at 95,000 miles before my extended warranty runs out.
Aug 8, 2016
DFibRL8R Split it with you is better than full price!
50% off is not bad, what was your approach, that it is not a milage dependent part and shouldn't have failed so quickly?
Aug 8, 2016
demundus Pretty much yeah. Manufacturing defect... Why would my touchscreen be leaking caustic commercial adhesive on a 3 year old car in coastal (moderate temp) california. 50% may not be bad, but thats basically my Model 3 deposit. Why am I paying for one of the most prominent interior feature's premature failure based on mileage alone? Aggravating to no end.
Aug 9, 2016
jawdoc1234 I have a recently discovered oozing of a sticky gell like material from under my screen with the appearance of bubbles and linear defects in the screen display. Bubbles are identical to those shown above. This is in a 2012 Model S Signature series. Is this a manufacturers defect? This just shouldn't happen.
Aug 9, 2016
demundus If you're still in warranty, go get it fixed NOW. If you're out of warranty, welcome to my plight.
Aug 17, 2016
TSLA Pilot I've been thinking a bit about this. I'd recommend tweeting a picture of your screen (and any screen drippings!) to Elon and asking for an across the board policy change with this issue. Tesla really should be holding their suppliers feet to the fire on this--better for Tesla to spend more on parts' contracts going forward, BUT be able to aggressively go after bad parts by sticking it to the manufacturer--all doable if it's in their original contract (and it needs to be).
Should be a win-win: better quality parts going in, and much better customer service and loyalty. This is how long-term reputations are made....
Aug 17, 2016
demundus Tried tweeting him, and Tesla's official twitter twice with pictures of the issue. I've also posted on their facebook, called the owner hotline 4+ times, talked to a SvC asst mgr, mgr, and district manager. Unless Elon or someone from corporate steps in, I am mostly stuck.
Aug 18, 2016
sbgator90 Don't wait too long. It will start dripping a very nasty sticky glue all over your center console that will not come off!
Aug 18, 2016
sbgator90 It would be great to consolidate as many people effected by this and approach TESLA in mass and followed by the press if need be. I think this would get the desired result. This is a very high profile aesthetic of the look and sales positioning of the car. A 17" screen leaking copious amounts of glue and now looking like it is submerged in a fish tank- I took mine in yesterday to get it documented, but will not get it repaired until they take care of this absurd manufacturing defect as they should have long ago put out a service bulletin on this matter! I do believe this problem is going to grow exponentially for them over the next year and they will be forced to deal with it. I hope all of this glue doesn't fry the circuitry of the screen before then
Aug 18, 2016
DFibRL8R Hopefully the version of the touch screen they are using now is an improvement over the original in this regard. Time will tell. Honestly that is part of why I have yet to have mine fixed even though the bubbles have increased. I figure holding out as long as the screen works and the dreaded glue drip has not started will buy me a better screen when it finally has to be replaced. Plus I am out of warranty so no hurry to spend the cash if Tesla continues to take the stance that a touch screen failure at year 3 is a mileage-based warranty issue not a manufacturing defect that should be corrected under goodwill.
Aug 18, 2016
demundus I am of the opinion that, because they used a metallic trim around the screen, it conducts and retains heat more than the rest of the dashboard, thus the delamination around the edges. Next time you get in the car, touch the metal near the screen... its friggin hot.
I don't believe they've changed the border around the screen, so I suspect we'll see more of this with later owners.
Aug 18, 2016
DFibRL8R Hopefully they have improved the adhesive or whatever else can be done. Intuitively, with the adhesive dripping out that you experienced it would point to a failure of this, likely temperature related. I tried (and continue to) to keep the screen brightness low and keep the interior cool (out of direct sun). My failure coincidentally happened on a hot day when the car was parked in the sun with the sun roof open.
By the way, did you replace yours? If not, how have you dealt with the dripping goo problem?
Aug 18, 2016
demundus They did not replace mine. I got all the way to the regional service manager who agreed to split half with me ($1250). I had also heard there is development underway for a fix that doesnt involve replacing the screen, but they were only rumblings... no timing yet.
I deal with the dripping goo by leaving a towel in the car. I wipe the leaking area with a damp papertowel every morning (from holding my smoothie, so no waste!)
Also, when I complained this shouldn't be a wear item, they said that the screen use produces heat, which is true. However my rebuttal is that Tesla now automatically controls brightness... so I trust they know whats best? Arggggg
Aug 18, 2016
DFibRL8R Thanks for the tip, I am on goo watch lately. I really babied my screen with ridiculously low brightness settings figuring that would prolong screen life but alas, the bubbles came. I disabled the auto brightness adjust on mine as I was constantly turning mine down only to have the car turn it right back up again.

UPDATE-
Got a very good deal for them to replace the touchscreen and problem solved for now on that. Have another hugely expensive ridiculous problem now. When I gave them the car for the touchscreen repair my air conditioning was working perfectly fine as it has for its entire life (3.5 yrs and 63k miles.) When I picked-up the car the a/c wasn't working and so I took it back in as soon as I could get another appointment explaining that it stopped working while they had the car! The diagnosis was that the DCDC unit had a shorted fuse and so the entire unit has to be replaced at about $2,500++ and that they suspected that the a/c compressor might be binding and will need to be replaced at the same time for another $1,800++. I talked to them about how suspicious and coincidental it is that the a/c stopped working at the time of the touchscreen replacement. They are absolutely adamant that the short in the DCDC unit could not have come from anything they did in replacing the touchscreen. They proceeded to replace the DCDC unit and the compressor was working fine. Their story then switched to the compressor might intermittently bind causing the short to the DCDC fuse and that if I don't replace the compressor that I am told is working fine than I might have the same problem again. So.... currently out of pocket for $2,500 and they're suggesting to spend another $1,800 to replace the working compressor for a total of over $4,300++ all in... or drive off now and after the $2,500 sunk currently maybe days from now, if it is the compressor, I'd have potentially another $4,300 on top of the $2,500 to fix an air conditioner in a 3 year old car that stopped working while they were making another repair. I wish somebody that knows anything about the electronics of this car would weigh in and tell me if any of this makes sense? Or, if it is possible to get a short in this DCDC fuse in any other way, especially from something they did while replacing the screen or is it a total coincidence? For anyone weighing the purchase of a TESLA, let me tell you the cost of repairs that have been done to my car in just the past 11k miles (less than 1 year) after the warranty expired and their was plenty before that. 2 headlamps, 4 door handles, 1 Touchscreen, 1 DCDC unit (whatever that is) 1 recommended a/c compressor and a few other odds and ends--- at service center quoted prices over $11,000 (some I have paid for, some have been waived and some we have met somewhere between.) And, I was thinking with the motor and battery fully covered for eight years what else could possibly be a big enough problem to shell out $4,000 for an extended warranty?? Before this Tesla, my last four cars were a BMW 535, BMW 545, BMW 550 and another BMW 535 that in total I drove 380,000 miles and paid less than $2,000 in repair bills (not including regular maintenance) without an extended warranty on any of them....

DFibRL8R That stinks. Great that they gave you a deal on the touchscreen replacement, bad news about the other repairs. I thought fuses were supposed to protect the expensive parts that surround them? I am definitely not the guy to figure out why this happened but certainly the timing is coincidental.

qwk Did they do a software update while fixing the screen? I bet that's the culprit. The newer software causes problems with older parts more often than not. This isn't a big deal when under warranty, but will make Tesla a ton of cash for out of warranty cars.....

demundus What was your good deal? Also yes, all those other things are pretty insane. My A/C has been acting a little funny, hopefully its not that, and is the dummy sensor instead.
I decided to buy a salvage touchscreen and replace the digitizer myself. I'll be doing a write up soon for others. You should consider grabbing a salvage compressor, paying the fee to access the repair manuals (Massachusetts friend?) and do it yourself if you're a little handy and brave.

apacheguy The AC compressor is HV, it does not even pass through the DCDC.

SeminoleFSU IMO Tesla should be repairing these on Goodwill at a minimum at no charge to the owner. The 17" touch screen is the HALLMARK/TOUCHSTONE of the freaking car and if another car company started having these kinds of problems with the primary (and in the case of many settings only) user input and control surface the driver relies on to interact with the vehicle, it would be huge deal. I like the idea of owners who are having these problems (especially the goo) tweeting all their pics to Elon and Tesla motors. I'm willing to bet some changes would happen at that point. Living in the SE (Georgia) this is deeply concerning to me even though I have the windows tinted and usually have it parked in a covered area.

mhan00 Teslas are starting to sound like most other luxury cars, fun to own when new, but a nightmare financially when out of warranty.

guest does the screen/digitizer still work when this problem occur? (will it ever stop working) other than the goo issue?

guest I didn't take any pictures when I replaced my digitizer over the weekend, sadly, but my goo became a massive puddle. I'd estimate 3 tablespoons. It was all hidden above the cubby but below the screen (behind/on the cubby shelf).
I never had a touchscreen failure, so I suppose I could have gone on like that forever? But I shouldn't have to, the glue was gross, and cleaning that much of it was crazy.

guest I think eventually it will stop registering touch input. How much did you end up snagging the salvage MCU for?

guest 1700, including the IC (for tinkering). So kind of a wash vs Tesla doing it, but now I have an additional MCU to resell/play with.
A couple of door handles and a screen is a pretty big chunk of change.
