Things you didn't know about your Model X part 1

  • May 28, 2016
    AnOutsider
We have a thread like this for the Model S, but figured the X could use one too. As we all know, these cars are chock full of tech (probably too much of it in some opinions). There's a lot to discover... I'll start:

My wife informed me that the windshield wiper fluid actually comes out of the wipers! This was hard for me to wrap my head around at first, because seeing it in action you don't see a spray, just the wipers wiping, and suddenly there's moisture.

Still makes a mess on the top section of the glass at speed though.

    What else?

    • Auto lane change requires you to ensure safe clearance before initiating the change. The car itself does not ensure this beyond detecting blind spots.

According to my service center, located on the flat ledge surface either side of the 3rd row seats is a covered port for an as yet unavailable cargo cover.
  • May 28, 2016
    cantdecide
    • Rear AC automatically turns off unless there is an adult or large child in the middle of back row. When my 6 year old is in the middle row and the rear fan at maximum it only turns on while going around sharp corners. The rear AC is the vents on the pillars... the one on the center console is controlled with the front as with the S.
    • Your large wheel nuts are actually covers for the real wheel nuts, need to remove when installing snow chains
    • 12 volt outlet is active 24/7 (at least in my car) which is not the case in my S.
    • Rear hitch installation and uninstallation is tricky, please practice ahead of time.
    • In car phone charger has plastic rails that you should install if they weren't installed before delivery.
    • Front headrests automatically move with the seats.
    • Trunk shelf has two positions
    • At least some toll transponders (fasttrak flex for example) do work through the windshield.
    • If FWD get stuck... hold the physical button down or hup for several seconds to override (the button just behind the driver... reach in through the front row)
    • In the middle row the middle seat is narrower than the outer seats in 7 seat configuration.
    • In the middle row all 3 seats have tilt adjustment... the middle seat has it in front of the seat.

I was actually told this was discontinued.

we actually spent time trying to figure this out today. We have a 6 seater with kids in car seats in the second row. Third row is folded down. Rear AC would not turn on. My youngest was soaked in sweat -_-.

    Needs better control IMO

The AC compressor fan also acts as a parking lot locator device. Turn on the AC remotely, listen for the jet, and acquire your target.

  • May 29, 2016

The theory is, if you need the j1772 adapter, you are not using the UMC. So you will not need to unpack the bag.
  • May 29, 2016
    spleen
Indeed - the chances that I'll need to use the UMC is slim. But the chance that I'll want to use the J1772 adapter is much higher so I'd like to keep it close at hand instead of buried in the frunk/trunk. On the S, there was that very handy compartment in the glove compartment to stash the J1772 adapter and keep it from rolling around which doesn't exist on the X. I too would appreciate knowing exactly how the OP situated the adapter in the driver's door pocket so that it's secured. For now, I've shoved it all the way in the back of that pocket in an upright position which seems to be doing pretty well but if there's a better location/position, would love to hear it.

The air blows faster if it's in circulate mode vs biohazard. Biohazard slows the air volume. Also it's easy for the fan to blow with setting on cool but still have the AC off. Not sure why that is. If you have it at 69 and it's 80 in the car why is the AC not powered on?
  • May 29, 2016
    CmdrThor
My theory is this is due to the HEPA filter. The higher the MERV rating of a filter the more particles will be filtered out, but it will also require more air be blown through the filter.
  • May 29, 2016
    CmdrThor
We don't have an S so perhaps you all already knew this but you have to do a hard press on the windshield wiper fluid button to get fluid to come out. Otherwise it just runs the wipers. Probably belongs more in a Dummies Guide to Model X, but at first we thought our X was delivered without wiper fluid
  • May 29, 2016
    ohmman
Not a bad theory. However, it doesn't sound like the fan drawing through the filter. It sounds like the cooling fan for the compressor. You may be right, though - I could probably just pull my HEPA filter out and see how it works without the filter.

TIL, if you have any other door open when you exit the MX, auto-close won't happen on the drivers door.

I exited my MX like I always do and left my drivers door open. I had opened the passenger door to get something out. I closed the passenger door and walked away. When I came back the drivers door was still open!
  • Jun 8, 2016
    FarmerDave
Watch out for strong winds when you expect auto-close to take care of the driver's door. It happened to me yesterday - auto-close only managed to close the door halfway, leaving it sticking out into the traffic lane. Fortunately I looked back and took care of the problem the old-fashioned way.

IMHO: Avoid keeping the car key in your pocket. I learnt it the hard way today :)
We had a birthday party for our girls at a local horse ranch and I had to load and unload a lot of stuff and boy did I freak out myself and a bunch of folks helping me. It was a scene with various doors coming down on us with unintentional pressing of the buttons on the key fob in my pocket. No injuries or bumps, just some scared folks.

I'm suspicious of this "door coming down" thing. I have it as well, especially with the liftgate. It's happened at least 4-5 times. In over two years and 35k miles on the Model S, how many times did it happen? 0. So I'm just not convinced it's "pocket fobbing". My only other hypothesis is that it has something to do with "walk away" locking or similar. Proximity related, anyway. I wish I had a better feel for it. I just know that it's annoying.

I just tested this as this was just too intriguing. Walk away door lock doesn't happen if you have other doors open. However, pressing the top of the key fob does close all doors.

The space in front of the two adjustable cupholders inside the center console can accommodate a cube-style kleenex box, but only if the kleenex box is turned on its side (i.e. hole facing towards rear of car). It's a little too tight to accommodate a box upright.

When I picked-up my X at Fremont Service Center with new 3rd row seatbacks installed, was advised not to use the Tesla-supplied leather(?) slip-in key case because it can press on the buttons. They installed a small loop held by the battery compartment cover for me, instead.

My service advisor, who used to work at Fremont's Fletcher Jones Mercedes store, showed me how to put the X into reverse, adjust the auto-tilt-down of my side mirrors, then save it in my personal driver configuration.

@ohmman, I thought it a bit harder and on at least one occasion I am sure I did not have the key fob in pocket. In fact I did not have the key at all as it was in my wife's hand bag and I had to use the app to unlock the car to take out a box when the door came down on me.

I have a new hypothesis. The cars are Internet connected. They have access, theoretically, to this forum. They see what we're saying about them. And they want revenge.

So this is true for both S and X, when using TACC (or AutoSteer which inherently uses TACC), the accelerator pedal doesn't move. The car manages the energy to the wheels directly without using the accelerator pedal. However, the brake pedal does move when the car needs to engage the physical brakes. For the most part it e-brakes but when it needs to use the actual brakes you can see/feel the brake pedal move.

Remotely as in you don't have to touch the car? You need PUP to open the front drivers door without touching. The fob will do the FWD, trunk and frunk to the latch position. There is no touchless opening for the front passenger door (yet).

I was driving home from a road trip and was about 65 miles away from home, with about 85 miles left in my battery. I put in my house address on the navigation. The screen warned me to drive below 55mph in order to make it home. I ended up putting it on Range Mode and the warning went away and drove 70mph and was able to get home with 15 miles remaining.

I previously wasn't aware that it would give me warnings, it was pretty cool.

When you release the accelerator to "coast" the brake lights turn on. It wasn't really something I put too much thought into until my recent trip to Lake Tahoe. While coasting downhill to keep some distance from the car in front, the constant brake lights would make the driver behind me #1 think I'm an amateur driver, #2 intentionally braking to have them back off, and #3 become thoroughly annoyed as it would make them keep moving to & from the brake pedal. One solution is setting low regenerative braking.
  • Jun 21, 2016
    aija SigX 649
I too am overly cognizant of how my brake light indication may be misconstrued by other drivers. There must be a better way to signal that the car is slowing without implying erratic brake pedal behavior. Perhaps using the rear camera and/or rear proximity sensors as additional inputs to brake light control may be beneficial without sacrificing power regeneration.

    Team,

Is there a trick to enabling Auto park?

I tried many times today and I could enable auto park for parallel or vertical parking (between two cars) and I tried multiple locations. Auto park is enabled.
  • Jun 21, 2016
    Phil Seastrand
A couple of things come to mind:
    1) How many miles do you have on the car? It won't enable AutoPark until you have at least several hundred miles -- needs to calibrate.
    2) How close are you to the cars? You need to be closer than you would otherwise be so the sensors can "read" the cars and the gap.
    3) You must have a car - gap - car for the AutoPark to detect a spot.
  • Jun 21, 2016
    ohmman
There's also a speed limitation, though I can't recall offhand what it is. My car shows the Autopark icon relatively frequently, but I have yet to use it.

I wonder about just that. In fact I always prided myself for taking highway 50 from SLT and almost never touching the brakes in my manual transmission car unless I had to back up to yahoos who stuck on the brakes for every turn they could have made at twice the speed they were going at.

    1. NOT true. Mine auto parked with < 30 miles both parallel and perpendicular. First day I drove car.
    2. I find that you have to be within 8 feet for sure, 6 feet is probably better between the side of your car and the parked cars you are parking inbetween.
    3. Yes, there must be cars on both sides of the parking spot or at least a bush that looks like a car :)
Also, don't drive REALLY slow like 2mph, drive closer to 10mph and it works fine.
  • Jun 22, 2016

@loganintx Calibration IS true. The manual states it clearly as did my SC. Not sure why yours did it so fast, but that's not the case for most people.

Mine comes on, but never when I need/want it. Useless for me. I don't trust the ultrasonic sensors anyway though based on my AP experience.

BTW, I have also found that sometimes it doesn't display the P but it still works. On those occasions, I have been intently looking for the P, given up on it, only to find that when I put the car on reverse to park it myself, all of a sudden the touchscreen displays the controls for auto-park.

I was wondering if that could be a possible scenario. I will check it.

This feature is a SAFETY issue. It allows emergency responders to access the Frunk so they can cut the power loop located in the area by the passenger (Rt) side forward of the "firewall"... This disconnects the 12v power to the battery relay, thereby disconnecting the high voltage DC battery pack.

I've parked about 10 times with it in 2 weeks. Works perfectly. If it's not then I'd take it to the SC, have them drive the car with you and see whether it's user error or car error. I've done it on both left and right sides with both parallel and perpendicular.

I've taken to talking to my X:

    1. "Sorry, we're not driving anywhere today". ("We" because of Autopilot.)

    2. "Sit tight. I'll charge you tomorrow".

    etc.

I really did say #1 a few times. Fully expect to see it added to the DSM-IV next time its revised.

I too am abnormally concerned about how my driving / braking appears to those behind me. I always have been, even before the Model X.

I've now been driving the X for about 3 weeks. It took about a day to remember it was going to regen, and not clumsily come to a stop 50 feet short of a stop sign. It took about a week to start feeling natural and judging distances correctly and smoothly. And about two weeks to be able to finesse it at any speed so that I felt comfortable with its decision to show brake lights.

You just have to work very gently with the first 3-5% of e accelerator. Going down a hill? Letting off the accelerator will be like braking. But keeping it pressed 5% will be like downshifting to 4th, and your brake lights will not come on. If you release it further to 3%, it will be like downshifting to third, and the brake lights will come on (and probably should!).

To test your abilities, try taking a freeway off ramp, and try to control it so that the brake lights only appear in the last 200 feet leading up to the stoplight.

Also, when you feel you are flashing your brake lights too much, simply look around you. Most other people driving in any amount of traffic are brake-lighting constantly, and often fairly erratically. Don't let your OCD ruin the fun, and enjoy turning it into a game you can play with yourself.
