Textile or leather? part 1

Does anybody have experience with a textile interior? Pros and cons?

Leather if you ever plan on selling your car. You may have a very hard time selling the car with textile seats.
  • Oct 14, 2014

Leather if you have kids, and for when you sell it.

Yes, I have textile. Pros: less slippery, less sweaty, less nasty scratches from bolster seats. So far holds up great on normal use with kids. Cons: the parts of the seats that look like leather are the fake stuff, both slippery and sweaty.

Good point... textile seats will make the car unsellable in the future. You'll need to send it off to the crusher when it's time to replace it.

Sorry, you don't have Steve Job's "Reality Distortion Field". I'd be more than happy to have a vehicle without leather seats as they can be terribly uncomfortable in warmer climates. :\

I could have ordered Textile or Leather, and I chose the Textile, after sitting in and driving both.

The leather was too slippery and with the NON supportive Tesla seats, it was worse than most performance cars.
I also like the seats not to go to temperature extremes in the winter and summer.
Yes, I have Tint and the ability to cool down the cabin, but trust me, having my Tesla through the summer AND also having a leather seated car, I prefer the textile.

Having said that, my leather seats in my Genesis are FAR more comfortable, but that's because it's a better leather and seat.
I doubt the resell will be affected if people know what they're getting from each.

FYI: People think the solid parts are leather, but without the problems that come with leather.

Ditto. In fact, I did buy textile and like them. I've never wanted leather seats, yuck.

    Textile seats FOR LIFE!

Bought them. Have no regrets. They are even better (quality fabrics) than my previously spectacular GTI textile seats which still looked great after 7years and 125k miles of seat time.

Still 40k miles, and 1.5 years in and my Model S textile seats look like new.

Can you textile seat owners also read tea leaves? When do you suppose we will have additional color options for textile interior (seats, maybe matching ceiling?) and P85D seats in S85D?

With the Charlotte SC now permitted, I'm inching towards time to buy..........only 5 or 6 "must have, but not yet available" details left on the list. Paramount is excellent seats as my wife and I are 57 and starting to get back tweaks. Her main concern seems to be the seats (maybe she is resigned to it otherwise?).

Anyone have a Pearl White with black textile seats and pano? Would you recommend standard ceiling or black? I would like to see Tesla offer 3 color options, at least, like Mercedes B offers.

    I always default to leather.

But I did see the textile in a car at the local store. It was surprisingly nice--I would not have minded it.

I wanted the red piping on black leather, so my choice was still leather.

I suspect the demand is such that we'll continue to have a single color choice for the textile seats. Hopefully the P85D seats eventually offer a textile option, and filter down to the lesser models. We saw something similar with the Performance leather seats originally, so I'd guess it's just a matter of time.

The resale argument is tough. Certainly leather is more popular, but it is pretty crazy to assert a car with textile seats has no resale value. In my last luxury car, similarly priced to the Model S, had that vehicle's relatively-rare textile (alcantara) option for the seats. When I put it up for sale, I had a guy come the next morning from 2 states away specifically because it had this uncommon option.

If the textile seats were crappy it'd be one thing, but the material is nicer than the leather, IMO. The faux leather inserts are lamentable, but they do provide a nice overall visual appeal. I'd have preferred leather inserts (or a full textile seat), but I understand the no-cruelty nod they took with the inserts on the textile option. If I ordered another Model S, I wouldn't hesitate to go with the textile seats again.

I've always bought leather seats. Just prefer the look and feel of them. But I agree, having seen the textile seats in the S, I don't think they're bad.

Does anyone have Textile and dogs - was wondering how well dog fur releases from the textile seats--I am thinking of textile for the MX, have leather in the MS.

  • Oct 15, 2014
    Zeani
I do, but my dog stays in the trunk and I keep a towel over the rear seats to protect against his drool and minimize the fur on the back of the seats. Its definitely easier to clean leather but you should be able to get the textile clean with a bit of vacuuming (assuming the dog itself was clean).

What about spills on the textile? Does it bead away just as easily as with leather?
  • Oct 15, 2014
    Plug Me In
Happy with textile, and I think it looks nice. If you haven't seen it, it's much better quality than your typical Ford Taurus, etc. cloth.

My dog usually stays in the back, but she always works her way up to the driver seat while supercharging. Dog hair is holy hell to get out of the carpet in the back but vacuums off the seats pretty easily.

Fond of my textiles. Comfortable and durable over 20,000 miles. Synthetic inserts don't bother or appeal to me but aren't in contact in my normal driving position. I'd do it again.

I have two dogs. Both are large and have lots of hair that makes its way into the car. The seats clean so easily. A quick vacuum and there are only a handful of hairs left to pick out by hand. The carpets on the other hand. I just have a grey trunk (white dog, and black carpet) most of the time. Vacuuming doesn't seem to do anything other than orient some of the hair in the same direction.
  • Oct 16, 2014
    Gizmotoy
Very easy to clean. Unlike most fabric car seats, these don't have a ton of little fibers sticking out to allow the dog hair to cling to. I had to keep a lint roller in my alcantara vehicle to get rid of the hair, but just brush it off with my hand (and vacuum the floor) or vacuum the seats directly if it can wait in the S. And I use a Li-Ion underpowered vacuum, so it must be pretty easy.

I chose textile mainly for price reasons (the S85 was a stretch anyway) and would easily do the same again. The textile is much better than in the average car. Having had 3 BMW's with leather before the MS, I was a little bit worrie until I got the car.
Also, I think the leather seats are really nice, but the leather is kind of a "too good" quality so while it has a very nice look and feel, I'd say it doesn't match well with kids or dogs and would require some maintenance to remain good.
  • Oct 16, 2014
    HermosaRyan
I just liked the textile look better so I got them. Helped they were cheaper. But I recently found out the leather does have an extra pouch on the drivers side. That would be nice to have since storage space is limited.

I have leather seats and have driven a couple of loaners with textile.

I think the textile is quite nice and the selection is one that should be based on what you like. I personally do not understand the two comments I hear about textile versus leather.

First, I don't find the leather slippery at all and have never understood the comments from those that say leather is more slippery. Unless you are putting on some kind of leather treatment (which is probably a mistake anyhow) I find no difference in traction between the two. Second, I don't understand what the issue is regarding temperature difference. I did not find any difference between textile and leather.

There may be some kids and dogs preferences, but dog owners (per the dogs thread) are often putting dogs in back and using covers for the trunk area or seats anyway. A lot of leather seats shown there.

That's why they make multiple kinds of seats: people have different opinions.

I think if you have two surfaces, one smooth, and the other coarse and textured, you're less likely to move around on the latter. The friction on smooth surfaces is less. This can be (and usually is) overcome with substantial bolstering on leather seats, which the current seats lack. When I was at Laguna I rode in a P85 with leather, and as a passenger in my own car. I definitely slid around more in the leather seats. It's not just an "in your head" thing, either. Check out the seats on any serious performance car and you're not going to see much leather (unless it's suede) on the friction surfaces. Even more "pedestrian" sports cars like the Panamera and 911 default to alcantara when you upgrade from the base seats.

More than the above, the fact that leather seats don't breathe very well is huge. I'd love to trade you, I dunno, sweat glands or something but if I spent any amount of time in them I would get out of my leather-equipped cars with a sweaty back even if I was comfortable with the overall temperature in the vehicle.

Which is not to say leather doesn't have some distinct advantages: it's easy to clean, and often feels nicer to the touch (depending on the leather quality). Try 'em both out and get the one you like.

  • Oct 17, 2014

It's just as easy to spill on as leather. Your 2 year old will have no problem spilling anything on the textile seats!

They seem to clean really well. But I haven't really had any spills that would soak into them. My seats clean and look NEW, even after 40k miles.

Just had a loaner with textile seats for a day while my Tesla was in the shop. I found them to be decent but like the feel of the leather. The textile also felt hotter in the Phoenix heat but that could be black vs tan. If you wanted to save money or if leather offends you they would be fine.

Looking forward to the textile seats in my Frankenstein of a P85D. Wasn't too thrilled with the wrinkly, slippery, sweat-inducing first gen leather seats in my original S60. The next gen seats were too expensive to justify.

Just received my S85 yesterday with the textile seats. I really like the texture, it's nice and grippy and doesn't feel cheap. I would say the lack of side bolstering in the standard seats is compensated somewhat by the higher friction seating surface. I only wish they had the handy front pockets you get with the leather seats.

Just drove a brand fresh loaner with leather which seemed to work in the cool weather just like my textile seats have done since day one. But then I noticed the Heated Seat icon so turned it ON. Wow. Don't know why my textiles did not come with a heater, maybe they do nowadays. Anyway it should be standard equipment!!

Loaner I had with textile had seat heaters
  • Dec 1, 2014
    DjiM
I have a P85 with textile seats. If you take the tech package, these seats can be heated. As far as I know, they also have the exact same electric motors for seat positioning (including memory per driver profile) as the leather seats.

I actually prefer textile seats in my cars because the cars have to "sleep" outside on the driveway. On hot days as well as on cold days, my personal opinion is that leather's temperature inertia is far too uncomfortable for the bottoms :)
Even with heated seats, I don't like the first few seconds of petrifyingly cold privates. And in summer, it's always risky to wear shorts with (black!) leather seats.

On the topic of cleaning: the textile still looks pretty good even though my two daughters (2 and 5) repeatedly climb the seats with dirty shoes. It must be said that there are strategically placed fake leather patches that do an excellent job.

I had textile on a Prius and a BMW 5-series before. Never missed the dead cows :).

The only downside I see it that there isn't a choice for colors.

Textile seats for me too. Have never regretted them even a tiny bit. They are comfortable, look good and have no seat sag. Seat heaters work great. I know some people are total snobs about leather but all the seats I've ever had with leather ended up cracking a little bit along the edges.

    > I have a P85 with textile seats. If you take the tech package, these seats can be heated. [DjiM]

Unfortunately sounds like another Tesla 'hostage situation' i.e. get something you need by getting stuff you don't need.

An aftermarket seat heating pad might be the way to go for the 2012s with textile seats. Wearing an overcoat for the first 40 miles is usually what I do Nov > April.

Still wondering when we get color options for textile seats. Is non-alcantara ceiling the same material?
  • Dec 1, 2014
    Gizmotoy
I don't know if something changed very recently, but as of as recently as a few months ago all textile seats were heated (regardless of technology package selection). Tesla added the heaters across the product line somewhere around the major September 2013 revision, touting it as a way to save energy by reducing reliance on the cabin heater. Obviously that doesn't help the 2012s (could you even get textile seats in 2012?) and early 2013s, but anyone ordering now should have them.

I'm more interested in if the textile seats will get a "Next Generation" update or will be slowly phased out. It seems pretty likely that the old seats are something Tesla would like to ditch, and given there isn't a Next Generation option as with the leather seats, I'm not even sure we can count on the textile seats being an option in the future.

To answer your question, though, no the headliner fabric is very different from the seat fabric. The seats feel sturdy and of very high quality, the headliner not so much.
  • Dec 1, 2014
    CHGolferJim
Thanks Gizmo. It hadn't even occurred to me that textile could be eliminated, but I guess you're right. Would Tesla then have to stop upcharge for leather?

Actually I think the change occurred during the price increase going into 2013, or at the very least early 2013. I have a May 2013 delivery (March 2013 order) with textile seats and the seat heaters were included at that time. At that same time Tesla made the seats the same and prior to the revision the textile seats were only 8 way power seats and did not have memory.
  • Dec 2, 2014

The original owner of my car took ownership May 19th, 2013. The car has black textile seats with heaters and 8-way memory for driver profiles.

We originally wanted to go leather, but when this vehicle became available it had the textile seats. My wife and I were really surprised at how much we liked these seats, and we in no way miss not having leather. That being said, we've had a loaner for the past 3 weeks with leather seats, and they, too, are super comfortable. As a general rule, my wife is partial to leather and will likely go that route when she gets her Model 3, but if I had to do it allover again on the S, I'd probably stick with the textile seats.
  • Dec 2, 2014
    Gizmotoy
You might be right. My memory is a little hazy. I remember in September 2013 I was looking at buying a 1-2 month old inventory car. They were relatively cheap because of the August price increase, but decided not to because none of them had seat heaters in the textile seats, or at least that's what I was told. Further, supposedly none of the showrooms in the Bay Area had the 12-way heated textiles, so I had to buy sight unseen.

    But none of that's definitive.
  • Dec 2, 2014
    gg_got_a_tesla
Yup, this. I couldn't get textile with heaters and memory even with my Jan 2013 build MS60 as it was finalized in 2012, pre-price-increase.

More bolstering would be great for the textile seats. I don't think they'd be going away but would simply have a next generation version.

    Gizmotoy
Lets hope. I'd be interested in another Model S, but I'm not buying one with the previous-gen seats, and based on my experience with the textile so far, I absolutely want textile again. I could maybe be swayed if the leather was ventilated, but even then I'm skeptical.

Textile = vegan. That is strange but understandable. 'Woven' might be a better term since it is comprised of plastic threads, not cotton or anything found in nature. Very rugged; dog claw scratches only leave deformations in the thread which don't appear to weaken it. May go away slowly over time, bouncing back.

I don't see Tesla offering colored textile seats anytime soon. They've been cutting down "unnecessary" options to streamline the production process. I doubt colored textile seats will help with that unless there are tons of people demanding it. The next gen seats were an absolutely necessary addition though.

The Next Gen seats have much more prominent side bolsters and a slightly more concave base so that you "sit into them" more. That's why so many people say they prefer them. But it sounds like you don't want that. At this point the "old" seats are still coming standard in all models. How long that will be the case I have no idea.

I don't know if this has anything to do with the seat material, but the seat heaters seem to work much more quickly in my MS (textile) than our previous cars that have had leather seats. Unfortunately I haven't done a comparison test with a leather-seated Tesla. I'm thinking that the leather would be more of an insulator and make the seats take longer to warm up. My butt is toasty warm within 30 seconds on the Textile seats.

Textile af this end and mainly due to very hot and cold temps for leather and also due to not being interested in using animals for chairs if not realy necessary.

its very interesting to see that Tesla is pretty much the only car maker that doesn't force you into leather seats if you buy all other top level luxury assecories available. I personally feel this has something to do with the fact that they expected many buyers to be "environmental conscious" many of whom have aversion against using animals for seats for the same reason....

Think so, too. Wish they'd offer in earth tones though..........would pay extra for this low volume option.

I have had the textile seats for more than two years now and am completely happy with them. To help two couples decide which they wanted to order, I was asked by a local Tesla employee to come to the Seattle Tesla Store so my seats could be seen and tried on in person. I'm confident they'd make the same arrangement for you. It was really fun, too, for me to share my enthusiasm with people who were just about to finalize their order. Do ask!
