Tesla Service Centers part 2

Thanks for flagging this -- happy coincidence that the center is only about a mile from the HQ of the electric grid operator for the mid-Atlantic region, the PJM Interconnection. Now I can drive down and charge up while at PJM meetings!

I noticed the Tesla service center page on their website has put addresses for about half of the "coming soon" locations. Arizona also used to have "coming by March" and now has "coming soon" instead. But it looks like it will be in the Airpark area on Raintree and Hayden.

    Fluxemag,

Are there signs of TIs happening at Raintree and Hayden that suggest that is the likely TM service center location?

At the Get Amped tour in Munich, Tesla gave a presentation and announced a total of 5 service centers to be opened up before end of year: Dsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Mnchen. Two new stores in Hamburg and Frankfurt to be added to the Munich location for a total of 3 stores.
No Tesla presence in former Eastern Germany, as some guest noted. :frown:

I suspect this has been brought up already.
Anyone know why the two maps showing Service Centers are different? The map under the "service plans" menu states more service centers will be open by March 1st. Under the "find us" menu there is no mention of March 1st.

I can attest the the Montral Service Center now has a service manager and a ranger, both just back from training in California.
They were assisted from help from NY City until recently.

It is not "officially" opened yet, as they are still installing equipment, but already took good care of my MS, for a UMC issue.

So, close to march 1st, maybe just a few more days...

interesting. I confirmed that yellowpages.ca has the same entry Tesla Motors Inc - 7850, ch Devonshire, Mont-Royal, QC . I wonder how long this has been there? Could be the temporary address they used while waiting for a site or it could be the new permanent home for the service center. Only time (or maybe Hans) will tell.

Edison (central NJ) is a good geographical location for Tesla to have a presense. Easily accessible; you can get to Edison right off I-95 (NJT) and the Garden State Parkway.

It will make a nice location for a super cahrger too. Since its about 110 miles north on I-95 from their Delaware super charger.

My S was delivered Feb 8th and it has been perfect, the first time I washed it I had some paint issues. I couldn't get a decent picture of this but i had about 8 spots from the size of a quarter to a 50 cent piece under the clear coat. If I had to explain it , the look was like a cloud or a very dull whitish spot under the clear coat. I thought by looking at it that it was a contaminated inspectors glove inspecting the paint before clear coat and had left a print residue. Well long story short some of you may know what caused this but the Tampa service center had their detail company come there to meet me, I showed Dan my issues and he said it would be looked after. The manager of Tampa, Mark, took us to the local Mall so we could shop for a couple of hours and have lunch and then arranged to pick us up when Dan was finished. John picked us up and took us back to the shop and there sat a beautiful BLUE model S with no paint issues, Dan had polished and massaged the little critters into submission, just a beautiful job, we arranged to return in a weeks time to have Opticoat applied by Dan, special thanks to all the folks at TAMPA SERVICE CENTER that we met and helped us out, thanks to the service manager Mark, Technician John, Dan the detailer and Kimberly, the very capable and courteous receptionist that kept everything together, thanks again all, GREAT JOB. TAKE THAT GM, I know you can't compete with service like that. Regards Robert

I really have had a tough time with the service center out here in Southern California--- my driver rear door stopped working 3/4--- the service center is ordering me a replacement-- and they have yet to receive it! Also, they told me that the next appointment even if they got the handle in is 4/17! I'm having blue tooth connectivity issues as well. Anyone experience a similar type of delay in service?

    - - - Updated - - -

...also, the service center not open on Weekends and I work fulltime--- :-(. I asked for a ranger to come out and for them to waive the $100 fee. will see what they say.

Woohoo, looks like a service center is coming for Wilton, CT. Shocking, to tell the truth, since Wilton and White Plains aren't that far apart but I'm not complaining as it's less than 10 miles from my house.

Need to scour the local papers regarding any zoning discussions that happened at the town council.

I'm beginning to think that Tesla is having trouble fitting all the cars being worked on and all the cars being prepped for delivery in its service centers. We did see the picture of the stacked cars at one service center...

Normally you'd expect that Tesla would go for greater geographic distribution. (Syracuse, please?) But if service centers are getting overcrowded, then you'd expect more service centers "nearby" to old ones.

The manager of the Watertown MA Service Center told me that they may need to find a larger facility fairly soon--simply not enough space, particularly around the building itself. I'm not sure what the comparative economics are, though, of opening up another, similarly-sized SC in, say, Brattleboro VT or Worcester MA, to unload the Watertown SC, or just finding new space in the Boston area that's 3x bigger.

Strange place for the Bellevue service center too eh? I work in the drum shop that you drive past to get there. Definitely a strange location since it's so far off the beaten path and not a lot of non-Tesla traffic for branding sake.

Yah. There's been talk about them buying some of the neighboring land are and sprucing up the place. I'd love to see that happen. It really is one of the ... um ... "most improvable" places in Bellevue that I've run across.

Driving south on CA-101 in Burlingame Friday, I spotted a big red Tesla Logo very visible from the highway. Must be the new Burlingame service center. It looks big. It's hard to judge location off the highway, but I'm guessing it was at Edwards Ct. off Rollins Rd. Google maps shows a large unused lot and a building which could be converted. But I'm guessing its a whole new building right up against the highway. I didn't have time to stop an scout the location. Too bad it's not walking distance to BART or Caltrain. But with loaner cars that's pretty nice.

It has been common knowlege that the new Scottsdale (AZ) Service Center has been slated for a location in the Scottsdale Airpark. When I heard that they had to fill in a swimming pool to build the facility, I recalled a scuba shop that was once located in the area and went to investigate. There is demo work on three units with a storefront on one side and three huge roll-up doors on the back of the property on the northeast corner of Raintree & Hayden. It appears that Metro Phoenix have a permanent service center in the near term.

My sister (who lives in Milford CT) said she drove by a new Tesla Service Center last night. I don't think it's operational yet, but signs are up saying Tesla Service Center.

I think the exact address is

it's across from Bella Napoli pizza. It used to be an old Saturn dealership.

I know the new Service Manager, who had 15 years experience with Lexus (service tech, then service writer, finally service manager) who is making the leap to TM. I actually recommended him to the HR folks and Jerome (wrote them a letter). He will be an incredible asset to the organization. I was at the Tampa Service Center this AM to have a couple of tweaks done on my car. They introduced me to the manager for the Orlando Service Center and a sales rep. They were both in Tampa for training. Of course, both were very nice guys.

The manager told me the Orlando Service Center is going to be in Longwood (I forgot to ask about expected opening dates). Not sure if this is news or not, but a quick search on the forum didn't turn up any news on Orlando other than supercharger rumors. I also asked him about any news on an Orlando supercharger - he had none.

Many of us have been waiting for the new Walnut Creek Service Center to open (it has been listed as Coming Soon on the TM site for over 6 months). I had previously discovered that the planned location was to be the old Cooks Collision location on N. Main Street next to Autopia Car Wash. Someone else had discovered that a permit had been applied for, then withdrawn (possibly problems with the site, abatement, plans, etc). Today I happened to stop at the Corte Madera Sales Center location to scout out the charging infrastructure (HPWC go live in 2-3 dayssee my other post). When there I ran into the concrete subcontractor (works under the general contractor --hired by TM to do the concrete demolition/repair/new work). He reported that his firm had done all of the concrete work at the Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, and Burlingame locations as well as others. They saw cut existing slabs (e.g. inside old dealership locations like Palo Alto) to be able to pour new 12 thick pads/footings for the new service lifts, plus do the exterior parking lots and hardscape. Anyway, I asked him about Walnut Creek, and he reported to me that his firm has the contract to do the work, that the project is back on track, at the N. Main St. location and that he is awaiting a call to begin concrete demolition in a couple of weeks (on or about 2/1/14). Hope he is right.

Note that this is a few miles from the proposed coming soon Walnut Creek Sales Center to be located in Broadway Plaza (not sure exactly where in BP it will be given the upcoming major remodel). However this might mean the installation of charging infrastructure in the existing parking garage there (there used to be commercial equipment that was torn out).

Today I happened to stop at the Corte Madera Sales Center location to scout out the charging infrastructure (go live in 2-3 dayssee my other post). They saw cut existing slabs (e.g. inside old dealership locations like Palo Alto) to be able to pour new 12 pads/footings for the new service lifts, plus do the exterior parking lots and hardscape. Anyway, we were talking about future projects/service centers. He stated that TM was looking at a location in Oakland for a service center (not sure if it will also be a sales center). He had no details and his firm has not yet seen a site or been asked to bid on the project.

I too am anxiously awaiting the announcement of a new service facility up here.

I would bet it is either going to be near the end of 7 in Tyson's before 267 or off of the Toll Road somewhere in the Reston area. It would make sense to have it near Aston Martin, Bentley, Porsche, and MB but given the number of MSs I see on 267 daily anywhere east of 28 would be considered a win over driving to Bethesda.

Update--as of yesterday 3/19/14 there is no action at the theoretical Walnut Creek Service Center location on N. Main St. Still has a 'For Lease' sign and some MBZ parked there.

Also checked out the future home of the Sales Center in the Broadway Plaza shopping center in Walnut Creek. Spoke with a 'concierge' who showed me the boarded up future location near Starbucks and Juicy Couture. She noted that there has been little to no construction activity, and I personally have seen no gross change since my last visit a month ago. She also allowed as how there needed to be work done in the parking garage for charging infrastructure.

Looks like we're still in for a wait.....

Just an update on the Walnut Creek Store and Service Centers...

Store...I was by the Broadway Plaza location at end-of-day today 4/3/14, and the temporary construction door was open. I chatted with the foreman and 2 workers. The foreman works for TMs 'prime contractor' building out stores. He noted that he has not been home since New Years and does not expect to be home again until July 4th. He goes around the country from location to location doing the build-out/renovation of the Stores. He has done 1 in NJ, plus the Sunnyvale and Corte Madera stores. He says that they have a lot of Stores in the pipeline.

They have done the interior demolition back to the studs and subfloor. They have to do the finishes (including float the floor and lay tile) and do the electrical, lighting, etc. Looks like the finished space will be about 20x40 feet, not bad given the constrained real estate in Broadway Plaza. They will keep the glass front entrance and the wide door opening to be able to bring inside 1 model S and 1 'skateboard'. They expect to have the work done by the first week in May.

The 6 HPWCs are going into the adjacent garage, on the first floor (technically in part of the employee parking area along the exterior wall backing up onto South Main St.). This parking area is accessed from the south side off of Broadway Plaza Road, through a swinging arm gate. I spoke with the security guard there (the security booth is actually close to the gated entrance) and he is not sure how they will control access for 'casual TM owners' who want to charge. Presumably the TM employees will have an RFID gate card to enter and exit the area. Maybe if you need to charge you will need to park upstairs, go to the TM Store, check in and get access. The transformer has been placed just outside the garage and the distribution panel/circuit breaker panel has been mounted onto the inside of the exterior wall (multiple 100A circuits inside the panel). The contractor (working in the Sales office) told me that they expect to get the mounting boxes and disconnects for the HPWCs in a week or so and hope to have the HPWCs wired up and working in a couple of weeks (...does not mean we can get access and charge).

Service...the suspected location on N. Main St (old Cooks Collision) shows little obvious change. Still has an Available real estate sign out front, however there are fewer MB cars parked there. The Sales office contractor did not know much about the service center (I get the feeling that these are done by different contractors).

If anyone has any better/updated news on the Service Center (maybe someone knows someone in the WC Building Dept who can check permits), please post here.

Update on the SF East Bay/Walnut Creek Service Center:

It is now off the table (and finally pulled from the TM web site which had said 'Coming Soon' for a long time). Too many hassles with the proposed location (including that it might have been too small). Next local Service Center is allegedly going into Dublin. Walnut Creek not totally abandoned, but likely much further down the road.

OK--latest news/rumor...was at the new Walnut Creek Store in Broadway Plaza a few hours ago. Spoke with a sales rep (was at Santana Row for 9 months...transferred). Has anyone heard about a location for the Jacksonville, Florida service center? If the location of the pin on the service center map means anything, then my guess is that it will be located at the northeast corner of the intersection of North Main Street and State Street. Just a guess. There appears to be an old foundation and partial structure there right now.

    New service centers

Not sure where to post this but wondering how Tesla is going to keep up with production as more service centers are getting very busy. I think we are already feeling the impact of more MS on the road. When I called the Rockville service center in October to schedule an annual service, the earliest appointment available was in December. And when I wanted to have my snow tires (already mounted) put on before the snow hits us (like today) I was given a date two weeks out! Needless to say I took it to my local tire shop who did the switch while I was waiting. Not too happy about all that. One of the few perks with the service plan are free tire changes.

Chris -- The Fairfax service center should be open in March 2015. Hopefully, this will alleviate the pressure a bit.

As for service centers in general, I haven't heard of any grand plan. Presumably, Tesla monitors the service center workload, but I'm not sure how they translate that workload into action or how anticipated sales are factored in.

I'm pretty sure that the Service Centers do double duty, both handling service and maintenance, as well as receipt and preparation of new cars in the region. I think that is part of the reason why Tesla Motors is getting some larger locations, old dealerships that are available in some markets, so that can be handled more easily in certain territories.

What Tesla has been finding is that the smaller service center locations get frequent drop-ins from the public looking for information and test drives. I know Montreal/Dorval had to bring salespeople on board even though they were originally intended to be strictly a service location. Now Tesla is opening a larger store/service center in Montreal proper.

I got bored and put these charts together. I found approximate service center openings by tracking Tesla's website changes, sale estimates from insideevs.com, industry dealer count and industry sales from wardsauto.com.

    Service Center Interactions

This post started out as part of the response to another thread. As I kept writing I realized it had less to do with that particular topic, and was more a topic of it's own, so I split it out.

I hope you don't get too frustrated with the service center guys. They are good guys, perhaps working with a rapidly changing set of rules and data, but usually for the better I hope and think. Respectfully encourage them to find the solid answers and commit.

If there's anything that really leaves you less than happy with their actions and you think there is something for them to improve (vs they did everything right, but it's still a crappy situation), then definitely talk to the manager at the service center, then go from there. They are approachable and really want you to have a great experience. These guys as a team really are different than just another car dealer's service center. They are there to prove it can be different.

I've certainly always found that dealing with Tesla at every level and multiple service centers has been far different than dealing with other auto industry folks. It's usually been a positive experience, but even their negative experience were different than most of the negative experiences I've had at auto dealers/service depts. With few exceptions (that tend not to stick around that long) they are protective towards Tesla as a whole as well as towards the owners. So long as one doesn't flip them into a mode of being in a defend the mothership from the hostile invader/customer, there's a great opportunity to interact with them in a mutually positive and trust building manner I don't often see in such industries. There's an opportunity to give feedback that'll actually effect change, and an opportunity to have a long term experience with them that approaches friendship rather than the wary, at times adversarial encounters many of us are more used to.

I just want people to see the difference and the potential that Tesla and the service center guys themselves are trying to accomplish, and help them get there through the challenges that come up, rather than write them off when something negative happens based on our past experiences with others auto industry interactions. Keep at it, expect different, and gently but firmly encourage it, and I think you'll be pleased to actually see it happen.

People have often said here that they think roadster owners get special or different treatment at tesla. Some roadster owners have said this isn't true, and some non-roadster owners have said that the get the same supposedly preferential treatment as the roadster owners. Isn't it possible that what's really happening is that the owners themselves are treating the service center people different? Expecting better and treating them better, not automatically assuming a "out to get me" type response from either side? It becomes mutual. I've always felt like I was part of the Tesla family. It's not a perfect family, but a good one, trying to do great things. Family is of course not exactly the right word. Substitute team for it, or effort for it. The feeling remains though, even when disappointments happen. Some have been just plain things I think they messed up (and of those, they often but not always agree). Some have been when I thought they should be able to do something that realistically wouldn't work out for them. Regardless though, we move forward by dealing with it as people with common goals and a tendency to expect the best from each other rather then the worst (or merely the satisfactory), built upon history and trust gained.

Don't take any of this as apologist talk, or anything of the sort. Trust is earned, not given, and all that. And certainly as Tesla gets into more and more markets and quantity, they are going to have to scale and change to deal with it. But do recognize it is a two way street and that many of us come to the table with our own past bad experiences affecting what level of friendliness, initial trust, etc. we offer. And do recognize that they are trying to do things different and work with them to encourage and accomplish that, providing constructive feedback both positive and negative. Try to keep stuff that can be dealt with at the local level local, but also do carefully share with higher levels too, in a way that doesn't throw the local folks under the bus. We can effect change and help them scale while still staying uniquely Tesla rather than slowly morphing into the beast that is largely the rest of the industry.

You are absolutely right here, @ra-san, and I hope I wasn't too grumpy to the SC guy this AM. Tesla is a truly great company with great service.

My only real complaint about service centers is that they're too few and too far between. (Syracuse NY please?)

Tonight there was an opening reception for the new Service Center and Store in Dedham, Mass. Located right on a busy Rte.1 street side by side with other conventional dealers.

Beautiful facility which increases Tesla's visibility in New England in a significant way.

Event was very well attended with at least 100 Teslas (and owners) showing up for the opening. Great marketing event!

@kyalami - thanks for the pics (the wife's car is the red one in the first picture, glad we washed it :)

I hope someone got a video of the parking lot...it was a lot of fun...
Good to see some familiar Tesla faces, especially those in new roles.

You wrote this in March 2014. I notice it isn't on the "coming soon list" as of July 25, 2015.

    No, it won't be.

Tesla is not expanding the Service Centers successfully at the necessary speed. :-( This is getting to be a serious problem.

Maybe Tesla will have to delay the release of the Model 3 due to a lack of service centers. It would be better than releasing it without enough service centers. :-(

    - - - Updated - - -

You wrote that in June 2013. As of July 2015, I count 70.

This is a *terrible* rate of increase. That's an average of 6 per year.

At this rate, Tesla will be unable to service Model X, let alone Model 3.

I hope Tesla hires a new manager of service center expansion (separate from the manager of service) and gives them a large budget. Because this is going too slowly.

I just dropped off our Roadster for an upgrade, and got a Signature Model S as a loaner! I saw the "6USX..." plate and did a double take. I assume it was traded on an X. Some other people also were talking about getting an older loaner vehicle, and were happy because the turn indicator stalk was in the right place (for them... and me...)

Glad you got a loaner for the Roadster. There were some rumblings not to long ago that they were no longer doing so.

Just dropped my MS P85+ at the Sunnyvale (CA) service center and go stuck with Nissan Altima through Enterprise. I guess the Bay Area service centers just have too much business or too few loaners. There were 4-5 new Model X inventory cars on the lot. A lady was dropping her Model X (didn't even have plates on it yet) off for service - something to do with an idiot light or indicator remaining on in the driver's display.

I want a service center in Quebec city, going to Montreal is such a pain.

Tesla could also have one in Trois-Rivires at Sylvain Juteau Electric Station. Everything outside of Montreal and Gatineau is fine with me !

What do people do for service if they live 100 more more miles from a service center? Does Tesla come out at pick the cars up, or doesn't one have to plan on day-long commitments to take the car in for service?

And what about major repairs in that case?

(I'm thinking practically about what owning a Model S would entail for me today. )

I'm not sure if it works the same everywhere, but here in Michigan they pick up the cars locally and then truck them in groups to the nearest service center for no charge. It may increase turn around time by a couple days but is perfectly convenient.

Tesla makes no guarantees about picking up and dropping off the cars for new buyers any more. They may require you to make day-long commitments to take the car in for service. So far they've been pretty nice to people who have *complained* about this, and have dropped off / picked up the car. But if you plan to keep the car for more than a couple of years,.... well, either expect a day-long commitment or don't get the car (until they build a closer service center).

does anyone have any information in relation to the alleged opening soon Service Centre in Edinburgh, Scotland UK. Our Model S is due in September and when ordering it we were told the Edinburgh service centre would be open by then, just curious

Thanks. That's what I thought the situation might be these days. Still, I occasionally read people raving about Ranger service. But I have the impression those are the exceptions.

I live 337 and 378 miles from the nearest Service Centers. When I purchased the car I was told that if the car was driveable it was my responsibility to take it to the Service Center for warranty service. If the car was undriveable they would pick it up, up to 500 miles away, for warranty service. Ranger service is available but it is fairly expensive ($3/mile for the one way distance IIRC, I haven't checked lately).

So, yes, one generally has to plan day long trips (two days in my case) for service if one lives far away from a Service Center, or pay a lot for Ranger Service. I have an appointment for a door handle repair in Salt Lake City in a couple of weeks. It will cost me a motel bill, a couple of days, and 700+ miles of tire and car wear. It's the price for driving a Tesla when one lives far from one of their very few Service Centers. I'd wait for a regular service visit but the handle is beginning to annoy me and my time, at least, is free since I am retired.

Something to consider when buying a Tesla. FWIW.

I tend to agree with you. There is only one showroom and one service center in all of Colorado but the bigger problem is a lot of the neighboring states have 0 so not only are all the Colorado S3X buyers going to be using it so are the other states' drivers and I hear its already a mess now.

....that would be those of us who bought unlimited Ranger service for 8 years before Tesla stopped offering it. It was a great deal. Since they discontinued it -- don't buy the car until they open a service center near you.

This is the one and only reason I am telling people not to buy Teslas.

Kind of crazy in that CO is a state that had a $6000 rebate for EVs registered in the state. Including used ones brought in from out of state. One and only one service center is poor planning. Two or more are needed.

We bought both "extended service" options (the 8 year ranger and the warranty extension), but with a change of operating policy by Montreal beginning last year, we now have a minimum five day round trip to Montreal, or a $6,000 transport bill, for any repairs which can't be done by Rangers. There is no way we can finalize our Model 3 reservations if just getting TO warranty repairs cost this kind of money. Moreover, as neroden suggests, those of us in the Maritimes (or any other part of Canada outside of the major metro areas) should be "unselling" the Model 3. Paying about $40k for a car and then having to pony up another 15% for the first (inevitable) warranty repair would be a customer relations nightmare.

They're required to provide *you* with free transport service for the annual service and any problems found therein. They were very clear in the advertising for the 8-year unlimited ranger service.

If they absolutely refuse, sue them. I doubt they'll refuse. So far they've been very good about honoring the service for the rather short list of "grandfathered" people who bought the 8-year unlimited ranger service while it was available; you're the first person I've heard who they're trying to cheat. Make it clear that you would not have bought the car under the conditions they are currently trying to impose, and that you feel that you have been defrauded. Worst case they'd have to buy the car back and refund your money.

Certainly you should not buy a Model 3, not with the current service center situation. I would cancel my reservations immediately if I were you.

Is anyone else have very long waits to get in for service. I called on 8/22 and couldn't get an appointment till 9/26 - almost 5 weeks. We live near Wash DC and it seems the two service centers are overloaded. We have a passenger door you can't open from the outside and for a couple of days mirrors that wouldn't un-fold despite re-booting twice -- they fixed themselves overnight. We also get intermittent problems with the navigation - route partially disappears if you zoom in/out -- see uploaded picture.

Anyone else finding very long delays in getting in for service?

Store & Gallery locations need to accelerate. Wish there was a "Supercharge.info" map showing upcoming/future store locations. Transparency might help put pressure on this.

Maybe they should consider contracting/partnering with someone like Carmax.
