OK, since this was bugging me, I figured I'd start this thread to help anyone else who may be having trouble choosing. Here are pics I gathered from various threads of the interior trim currently available. If you find any not posted here, please share! (though please try to keep it to REAL pictures).

*edit* thanks to all who helped build this list!

    Old Lacewood

For the sake of completeness (and a hope that it may come back), here's the original lacewood I fell in love with

Love the piano black personally, but your pictures definitely scream...fingerprints!

That old lacewood had a lot of character. I can easily see why you loved it.

The banana leaf looks great with the white leather. I wonder how it would look with all black. I'm favoring an all-black car. I know, a bit boring and the piano black does (as Grendal says) "screams" finger prints...

PS: Thanks for posting this, AnOutsider.

Well apparently banana leaf is being nixed and replaced. I liked the piano lack, but in the end the wife said it was far too plain so we went with the new lacewood. She did make a point that we'd already be wiping the screen down. I don't wanna have to do the same with the dash.

@AndyM surely I can get 2 days outta it! ;)

Hope these help those when your emails come in

@AnOutsider, the first picture in the # 2 post showing the instrument cluster and surrounding carbon fiber also is the best example I have seen of the true color of the Tan interior. Great find.

The Piano Black definitely! Lacewood - too weird. Furniture maybe, but not my car.

They will. I would also count the previous 'user manual' posts as another heroic effort.

I'm going with the new lacewood... Having seen it in person, it looks nearly as elegant as piano black, but will take less constant wiping.

    Hi,

I'll probably go with Piano Black as well, and I agree that the black and brown stained lacewood looks weird.

However, I keep hoping that Tesla will simply put a clear coat over its natural color. That would look great with a tan interior.

I would pay for carbon fiber in a standard Model S...why not?
Brushed aluminium would also be nice.

Until now only the piano black is the acceptable choice for me in a Standard Model S

    Hi Thomas,

Just as the exclusive colors and badging are reserved to distinguish Signature models, I believe that Tesla plans to use the carbon fibre accents, along with dark wheels, piping, bolsters and spoilers, to distinguish the Performance models.

So done commented in another thread that it was soft. I'm really torn between the two. My wife chose this weird wood m the Q5 though and I ends up loving it, so i guess I'll defer :(

I used to +1 brushed aluminum, but I honestly think it would be too much on that expanse of dash. Can't get behind the natural lacewood though, sorry Larry ;)

I am with you on this. I generally do not like wood in vehicles.

I would probably pay a little to get carbon fiber (although not expecting the option) and would really want brushed Aluminum. I happen to think the piano black will look great, except during pollen season when it will be speckled yellow.

    Hi Larry
Thanks for the answer, but just as offering the 85kWh for a standard Model S, why block customer choices.
And IMHO a techie-product as the TESLA Model S is...wood just doesn't fit for me...leaving only piano black.

Ditto for me. Wood in a car makes it look so out of date (being charitable here). So it's piano black for me too, though I'd much rather have something non-glossy. I suppose taking sandpaper to it is out of the question:eek:

I've got lacewood in yes. I asked my rep if I could change my order when I saw pics of the cars next weekend. She said that should be fine. I'm curious how Piano black holds up to finger prints/dust, and how the CF looks on all that expanse of dash. It looks like it's much more matte now, which should help with finger prints and dust a bit. I really liked the way Jurvetson's car looked like it had leather or matte piano black on the dash.

A picture of black leather with glossy Obeche would be helpful as well. I'm still debating between matte and glossy. Was leaning toward matte based on the website, but now considering glossy after visiting the Fashion Island store.

@bb, i'm in the same boat... black interior, debating matte or glossy obeche. was also leaning toward glossy after test drive because it had some actual colors in it, unlike the matte which seems just kind of warm grey... but i'm having second thoughts, or something.. just don't want it TOO glossy. like some sort of toy.

i have black leather and warm wood finish in my car (bmw) now and love it, just trying to get close to that really....
  • Aug 29, 2012
    bbmertz
Me too. I ended up ordering the glossy trim yesterday since the matte looked too drab to me. It is quite shiny but I think it looks a bit more finished. Realistically, either will look good with black leather and it just comes down to personal preference. Good luck with your decision...

@grisnjam, thanks for the pix! Makes me feel even better about my decision.

    Interior of R#1079:

    Tan Leather.
    Glossy Obeche.

I like all the trims, and I also wonder if there could be some better options overall, but...
Why the Obeche? I actually like the wood. I like the grain, the contrast with the uniform leather. I know, I know - it has been called Detroit, dated, many things - but it is not dated. Well, let's say it's as dated as a wooden baseball bat. Wood is the only finish that has stayed the test of time. Like 90 years. And it is real wood (veneer, I am sure, yes), not plastic or composite. The matte lacewood and obeche are very nice, but I held the gloss obeche in daylight in NYC and White Plains - there is depth and color - warm colors - that come out. Much more so than the matte, to my eye, which seemed a little greyish. Fingerprints? Yes, but the trim is only on a few frequently touched surfaces - the console and area behind and around the cup holders. For me the wood brings a warmth and -yes - a connection to the past I can't wait to see change in the light and feel as I drive. I spoke with Elon about this and I am pretty sure that is why he chose the obeche gloss. Okay, so I made that up - gotcha. But he did choose obeche gloss.
  • Aug 31, 2012
    Schlermie
It's a real shame what they did to the lacewood. I'm still getting it, but it used to be so cool in the original samples. I guess it was just too expensive to produce.
  • Aug 31, 2012
    Grendal
This is one of the items that could easily become a choke point for production. The various interior panels (except piano black) are likely made by an outside vendor. If they can't keep up with Tesla's demand then the entire line comes to a halt awaiting those parts.

The same thing happened with the aerodynamic wheels. The vendor can't pull it off and then Tesla gets egg on their face.
  • Sep 12, 2012
    neroden
I'm also a fan of wood interiors.
If I don't get to see them for myself, I may go with your recommendation here. You're, what, the third person who preferred glossy obeche to matte obeche despite not particularly wanting glossy. I have been having trouble deciding between the matte and glossy obeche.
(There is something I don't like about the lacewood pattern.) I hope I get a chance to see them.
  • Sep 12, 2012
    ModelS1079
Hope you have a chance to hold a sample of the woods. My opinion is just an opinion. However, the comment I made about the depth and colors revealed in the gloss is noticeable and others have commented the same, and the only question is then whether you want that. A tesla rep indicated he expected the gloss to b less scratch able which I found counterintuitive. Said the gloss is protected by the coating. Came up as I was concerned about stuff put on the console scratching, and the console is made from the same wood finish. I would not bank on his opinion though. you know, I have seen several of the finishes and they all step up to he plate and are great looking in this Sweet looking car. It's all a win win choice.

Leather seats in the Roadster seem to be 1/4 inch thick and hard. Impervious to 5 month of dog use. Can the ModelS seats be so sturdy, or should I stick with the cloth that I ordered?

The Get Amped test cars were reportedly showing some wear on the leather upholstery, so I'd be concerned that extended use with dogs could take a toll. I'd be inclined to put a thick polarfleece blanket on my dog-designated seat, regardless.

Thanx. So that's what that stuff is called. The keyword here is thick. Being a cattledog, she might like a coyote pelt tied to the passenger seat. You just don't get leather like the Roadster seats any more.

  • Sep 29, 2012

I will be going with the gloss Obeche. i am a big fan of wood. The great pity is that the lacewood has been stained. In it's natural state it is quite beautiful with a lacy texture and a reddish brown colour. Admittedly, over time, with real wood, even if coated with varnish, the red does go more brown but this only adds to the character. I have made lots of items with this wood. All the trim colours are Grey or black, and while they seem to go with all the available trim colours, a brown would have been good. As part of a wish list, something like birds eye maple also would be fantastic as also European Ash. Both the latter are very light pale yellow timbers which also will darken slightly with age, but look fantastic either way.

The Oak Brook store in Chicago had a Pearl White static vehicle, it may have been a Beta...the paint is gorgeous. I can't recall what the interior trim was. The CF trim is very nice, not overly glossy but with a nice sheen in the pattern.

The static display at Oak Brook used to be a Sig red beta. I believe the white one at Oak Brook is a release candidate. It has tan leather and obeche (I think obeche). The VIN is R00109. These pictures I took were to primarily show the paint armor, which shows an obvious discoloration.

This car (if it was the same one I was in at the Dallas Amp Tour) changed my mind on two fronts:

    1) The blue was stunning. I did not have a color chosen at this point. When I left the property, I did.

    2) The non-pano roof allowed me to understand what other tall people in the back felt like. I sat in the Brown Static Model in the lot (which had the pano roof) and had a bit more headroom in the back. So that sold me on the pano roof.

As an aside, Diana wanted the brown. She thought it was a cool chocolate color. I reminded her of her wardrobe - which is 87.4% brown - and that we can evaluate any outside factors that may skew one toward one color or another. We also discussed her desire to escape that extensive brown persona and move towards other colors in the closet region of our domicile. The eleven second stare gave me a stomach ache. We got blue.

    I love that thread.

I am finding it to be a real challenge deciding between blue/tan and blue/black. Tan did make the car feel nice and open, but black leather gives the inside such a sleek look. I've never had a car with black leather, and there's something appealing about that. I envision the tan getting roughed up by the children with dirty shoes. Maybe I need to get over that.

Remember that the "tan" interior is really "black and tan". Only the seating surface, portions of the side panel, top of the center console, and underside of the dash are tan. The carpet and back of the seats are black. So, just tell the kids to keep their feet on the floor, and you'll be fine.

Some of these pics are of the white leather interior offered only in the signature models. I'm not sure if this was pointed out.

The tan has more of a brownish hue to it. I was considering the Blue/Tan but just realized that I was basing this on the pics I've seen of the blue model with the WHITE interior. I'll probably go with grey now.

wish Tesla made the white interior available for non-signature cars. They are making the sig red available so why not the interior. For a futuristic car the white interior looks more fitting than the tan or grey. I would guess if the white were available as an option it would probably be #1 or #2 most popular (black being the other). I really hope they drop either the tan or grey and offer white.

You're right. The white would look spectacular for about a month (even less if you wear dyed clothing) and then :scared:

Does there exist pictures of general production interior? As I understood the ordinary general production cars will not have leather covered dashboard, but maybe I`ve missed something?

I believe the performance has more leather.

    Regular:
    Nappa Leather $1,500
Hand-wrapped surfaces of soft supple Nappa leather. 12-way, power adjustable, heated seats.

    Performance:
    Nappa Leather STANDARD
Nappa leather seats with contrast piping and Alcantara bolsters. Extensive leather throughout. 12-way power adjustable, heated seats.

I believe it is supposed to be vinyl, faux leather, in the general production interior.

Ok, so it will hopefully look similar to the Signature dash? I really like the look of the dash, and would hate if I had to settle with something plastic-looking stuff. Getting the leather pack anyway, but hope dash and doors look leather-covered as well as the seats.

Are we sure the Signature dash is covered in leather? I have doubts -- it's not a good material for the kind of constant exposure to the sun that a dash top receives and thus would not hold up well.

Well, no. I just assumed it was leather. Thought I read it somewhere, but as you point out, other fabrics are better. The most important for me is still that the dash and doors look leather-coated. It gives the interior a luxury feeling :)

The biggest difference I've noticed is that the entire headliner in the Performance cars is Alcantara.

I have been told by multiple store employees that all headliners will be alcanatra (including my P60) - is this not the case?

Production headliner was supposedly microfiber.. I think it was neroden who was commenting on the different headliner materials.

as far as I know. alcantara is a brand and their product is the worlds best known automotive finishings microfiber..........but just the same a microfiber. and the name has become synonymous with the product kind of like a xerox copy...........

I have definitely seen two different headliner materials in the demo cars, and I have on one of my videos from the Palo Alto event a brief snippet of a Tesla person demonstrating the difference to another customer.

However, perhaps things have changed, and they are all Alcantara now. I'd be delighted if so -- the headliner in my friend's Sig Performance was very nice.

(The other material was more of a woven textile, by the way.)

I really like it, and I don't mind sharing with non-Sigs on this one. :)

Does anyone know whether cleaning the Alcantara will be a problem, particularly with the tan interior? Sorry, showing some ignorance here, but it seems like it would stain easily relative to leather. I may have that totally backwards since it's a microfiber.?.?

The Alcantara upholstery in my 2004 Prius have no stains after 140,000+ miles and I haven't been particularly careful. It's the leather that will have the problem (and unfortunately, you're forced into leather to get heated seating--someone screwed up big-time there).

This is not only very true, but also a key point. The test car at White Plains is Blue with Tan interior and I was impressed - happily so - by the black accents supporting the tan - or are they tan accents on black? In any case, it looks more fast and much less Chevy than I feared when I ordered tan. I want the warmth of tan, but the sleekness of black. I do have many pics of this and will try and upload.

    Performance gives the Alcantra headliner

"The $3,500 Upgraded Interior includes all items in the $1,500 Nappa Leather Interior package, plus an Alcantara headliner ($1,900 on a Porsche Panamera), additional leather treatments and Alcantara seat bolsters ($600), Carbon Fiber dcor option ($500 on Audi S7), and contrast color piping on seats ($200). This package rolls up to between $4,200 and $4,700 (depending upon if you choose the Carbon Fiber Dcor on not), but was included in the Performance Package "

I am totally confused with your shots at this point :) The top five shots show the tan interior to be almmost ivory white. The last shot of the series shows the tan to be darker and more of a light saddle color. What is the real color; ivory whitish or darker tan?

We have ordered a Pearl White P85 with the grey interior, but now maybe I should switch to the tan if it is ivory white in reality. Of course if someone has the Pearl White with the Grey interior and it works, please reply to my post as I am very confused at this point :)

PhilMul: Looking at pictures on the web can be difficult. The white balance may have been off on the original pictures too. Is there any chance you can make it to a Tesla store to look at actual samples or maybe a local owner can let you see their car?
