Ordered S85 3/13/15 - Let's track this thing out! part 1

    JimmyAZ
My first post on TMC! I'm so happy to see so many posts here. I'm learning a great deal from all of you.

So we pulled the trigger! I decided I'd had enough fun with an Aston Martin I'd been buzzing around in for 18 months. We also are adding solar to the house in a couple weeks so this just seemed to make sense!

I'm writing this to have a chronicle, like many others have, of the path to delivery of the car.

    Here's what I got:
    Grey Metallic Paint
    Pano Roof
    21" Grey Turbine Wheels
    Black Next Gen Seats
    Matte Obeche
    Black Alcantara Headliner
    Tech Package
    UHF Sound

I'm choosing the Tesla lease option because, if you talk to my partner, I appear to get very bored with vehicles. So we'll see how 3 years in this puppy will be. I also chose to trade in my Vantage Roadster, but realized that they use companies like AutoNation who can't possibly offer me a decent price. So I switched to the regular avenues for selling it. *crossing fingers*

The design options confirm tomorrow, so you can imagine how I'm counting the days. The delivery is slated for May, although I'm hoping that I get as lucky as many of you have and will see a 1-2 week advance in that date hopefully somewhere in April! I've already stated as much to my owner agent.

As I get updates I'll post them here. Wish me luck!

Good luck with the new ride!

I went the lease route as its a tech car and in 3 years the previous versions will be out dated. Also, for business purposes its a great tax write-off. Hell, my first Tesla P85 only lasted me 6 months until I had to trade up for a P85D, they let me easily trade in and terminate the lease early.. sure, I paid a little more and took a little hit, but for the difference in performance and features it was well worth it. You will love the car man... much more than an Aston!

I ordered my S85D the day before you. Let's race to see who gets their car first, to see if the P85D cars are prioritized over the regular models :)

Thanks for the encouragement. I hope I don't miss the Aston. I think I've had my fill. Although I may miss the sound of that engine. We'll see!

    - - - Updated - - -

Has yours gone into production queue yet? Mine got its VIN# on Sunday and is now in the queue. Crazy fast. I figured the pre-VIN period would be the longest. I'm starting to stress out now. lol I hope I find a buyer for the Vantage soon!
  • Mar 24, 2015
    brickfrenzy
I received my VIN on 3/19, the day after my order was confirmed and it entered the production queue that day. From what I understand, they've been issuing VIN numbers fairly quickly after confirmation, but then it has taken 4-6 weeks to actually enter the build queue from that point. That being said, my delivery estimate bumped from "Late May" to "May" last night, so they must be burning through the queue to get models out the door for quarterly sales numbers.

I'm right there with you when it comes to selling my current car. Luckily, mine's fairly rare and coveted (A Cadillac CTS-V wagon) so I should have no problem at all selling it.
  • Mar 24, 2015
    JMG
Right, Brickfrenzy is correct. They issue the VIN fairly quickly (I received my VIN just a few days after confirming), but my DS said VINs are being generated 4-6 weeks before production. However, going on recent trends, I think that it is probably closer to 2-4 weeks. They have really ramped up production it appears.

Just got a call from the DS! The car is entering production the week of 4/20. This means my May delivery date will become an EARLY May delivery date! I'm all kinds of excited now!
  • Apr 14, 2015
    brickfrenzy
Lucky you! I finally got a delivery specialist assigned to me. Hopefully he'll give me an update on production soon.

JimmyAZ, was May the earliest delivery date available? If so, I'm a bit surprised. Our P85D was confirmed on 3/23 and began production yesterday (4/13) with a Late April delivery. I would have thought your car should have began production before ours.
  • Apr 14, 2015
    JimmyAZ
Hi nico1199! Yes I chose the earliest delivery date. I've read in other threads that there was a priority placed on the P85D delivery over other models, and left-hand drive above that. I assumed that the 85 single motor production must be slated for this week and next. That being said, I'm stoked you got yours so quickly!!

i hope my car enters production on the early part of next week rather than later. And if everything works perfectly I would hope I could take delivery BEFORE May since I'm only one state over from CA.

I tell you, this is worse than Christmas as a kid. Haha. I'm 43 and still having a tough time being patient. I just keep telling myself others have it worse than I, and that this is a good thing to make me wait for something this amazing. It'll be that much more worth it.
  • Apr 14, 2015
    JMG
P85Ds get priority over us lowly 85Ds!

Nah. Once you feel the motion it's easy to forget the commotion.
  • Apr 15, 2015
    nico1199
ahhh i did read that but was not sure if it was speculation or not. i believe it's natural to be this excited! i'm right there with ya.

nothing "lowly" about the 85D at all! :)
  • Apr 16, 2015
    JMG
Ha yeah that was a little tongue-in-cheek!
  • Apr 17, 2015
    JimmyAZ
My 85 just went into production this morning! What a cool thing to see when loading the MyTesla page. I thought, "Hey that's a 1-line update and I thought the production queue statement was 2-lines"! My DS stated we should start production a week early which would have been sometime NEXT week. This is getting exciting.
  • Apr 17, 2015

I have mixed emotions because I'm waiting for my own P85D. First congrats on finally getting out of the black hole of the production queue. Second I am saddened by the fact that this means I still have at least 2 more weeks to get to where you are today. :crying:

    I'm envious!
  • Apr 17, 2015
    JimmyAZ
I hear you there. I've never ordered a car this way, so it's been a pretty big test of how patient I can be. I saw that some other 85D's were just produced this week. I'm sad that yours wasn't one of them. Hopefully you'll have some good news next week.
  • Apr 17, 2015
    brickfrenzy
Congratulations Jimmy! I guess this shows the preferential treatment that P85 buyers get (I'm not bitter, even if I sound like it). I'm still waiting for production, with a May delivery.
  • Apr 17, 2015
    JimmyAZ
I didn't order a performance though. Just the rear wheel drive 85. I believe the preference was to the 'D' models to be honest. And yes it's tough to wait, but I keep reminding myself that there are RHD models for Europe that have been waiting longer. I REALLY feel for those people.
  • Apr 18, 2015
    brickfrenzy
And there we go! My status on MyTesla just flipped to "In Production". I haven't heard yet from my delivery specialist - he's brand new to the job and was in training in Chicago this week so he's just getting acclimated to the job. I'm probably going to be one of his first clients. Should be fun!
  • Apr 18, 2015
    JimmyAZ
Nice! Congrats!! I wonder if they still produce on Saturday and Sunday?
  • Apr 18, 2015
    JMG
I was wondering that too. You would think they would be working around the clock if they are trying to get 55k deliveries this year. But you don't see any weekend days on the spreadsheet for any milestones, at least from what I have seen.

Welcome to TMC. Did you mean you ordered the P85D (title says P85 which we can fix)?
  • Apr 19, 2015

Oh geez. No I ordered the 85. No P or D. Sorry for the confusion! How can I remove the P from my thread title?

    No problem. Fixed it.

    mod note: title updated.

My car just updated to 'In transit...' within the past hour. Wow! I JUST got off the phone with my DS regarding my trade and she said I should still expect delivery the week of 5/4, but I'm hoping this update grants me another week advancement!
  • Apr 24, 2015
    brickfrenzy
My car is still in production limbo. Harrumph. My DS said it should be built by the end of this week. My target is a May 9th delivery. I hope I can meet it.
  • Apr 24, 2015
    JimmyAZ
I just got a call this morning from the DS. The car is in transit and will be delivered 4/28 around noon. I'm on cloud nine right now. Time for a margarita!!!

Understood! And just sold the Vantage in the knick of time. The trade in offer wasn't very appealing.

Unreal its so good. It turned a complete non-car guy into a fanatic.

Already made a needless trip into town to buy batteries...

Here's a montage of screen saves I've made as my S85 has progressed. Nice to see it's on its way. My sales guy said this evening (nice he communicates on Sundays) it probably won't be here tomorrow but he's going to see if he can find where it is. If it's within a couple hours' drive I may just go hunt it down. :)

Man, my order is almost the same as yours - subtract out Smart Air and add in Premium Sound, and everything else (textile seats, red paint, everything) between your car and mine is identical. Yours was ordered a few days after mine and went into production at the same time. But mine's still stuck in production limbo :( Mine has to go on a train to Ohio, but yours is being trucked to Utah. I wonder if that's the difference? They're waiting for a full train-load of cars to head to the east coast before mine clears production?
  • Apr 27, 2015
    JimmyAZ
I would imagine your car would come out of production and move to 'in transit' while it waits for a rail car. How many days has yours been in prod status?
  • Apr 27, 2015
    brickfrenzy
9 days ago. It changed status on April 18th. My DS says it should take about 3 weeks from entering production to arriving in Ohio, but seeing other people's cars move out of production in just a couple of days is disheartening.
  • Apr 27, 2015
    JimmyAZ
I was told about 2 weeks, just in case something needs to be repainted, reprogrammed, etc. But mine still came out after 4 days. I'm crossing my fingers that yours is updated soon!
  • Apr 27, 2015
    Patrick W
FWIW, my DS just rang to say the car has not left the factory after all and that it may be a few more days. Ugh!
  • Apr 27, 2015
    Cyclone
Ouch Patrick, sorry to hear that.

Meanwhile, Jimmy, are you still counting down the hours or have you switched to minutes yet?
  • Apr 27, 2015
    JimmyAZ
I think at this time I have no concept of time. It's crawling along like I'm 3 levels deep in Inception. 2 days is like 10 seconds in real life! Haha. Hopefully a nice cocktail or two will finish out the night and I'll sleep like a baby.
  • Apr 28, 2015
    brickfrenzy
And FWIW, mine just changed in status, from being built to entering the production queue. I went backwards! :(

And edited. It now shows as production complete, in transit. Sweet!

I don't see yours in the spreadsheet (I could just be old and blind). Can you add it if it isn't there? At least post the ordering and VIN details here so those of us madly clicking refresh on "My Tesla" can see how close we're getting.

As requested, I have pics! I was really humbled by the delivery process. What a cool way to introduce someone to their car. It might be done like this with other manufacturers but I've never experience it.
    IMG_3174.jpg IMG_3175.jpg IMG_3177.jpg IMG_3182.jpg IMG_3183.jpg IMG_3185.jpg

It's interesting. Now I'm finding that the Blink stations I thought would work really well have bad displays and don't connect. Things I'd never notice until I actually needed them. I'm stuck with outside charging options until we get the solar system finalized. Then I can install the NEMA plug.

Is it weird that I want to sleep in the car tonight!?:biggrin::biggrin:

Great pics and beautiful car! Looks very much like mine when it will arrive. Are those leather fob holders along with the keyfobs? Which one of the three in the second pic got the first drive? I bet you all are still smiling! And nope, camp out tonight to "monitor" charging. Heck, I've slept in my 4Runner before, but I was also camping lol.

Congrats on your new car Jimmy.
Great thread, it crackles with your excitement, joy and energy.

Regarding your non-charging experience with Blink:
If you have access to a 110V plug in your garage or at your work, you can still get a "trickle charge" until you get the Nema 14-50 installed.
Very, very slow rate of charge, but it will keep you from going into a complete negative energy usage trend.
Eventually, every location that you plug in your car to charge will show up on your dash, just not as a Supercharger.
  • Apr 28, 2015
    JimmyAZ
So I'm the one on the left in the group. The other two are car fanatic friends of mine. (Crazy that I almost put a pic of my checkbook on the forum!:scared: haha). And yes, they gave us 2 leather fobs to carry the keys in! I was going to buy one of the silicone ones to protect it so this was a treat. And it's nice to be able to hang them on a hook by the door like all the other cars. The Aston was a solid key with no way to connect a keyring so I always left it in the center console. I guess you can't do that with this or it can drain the battery.

    Thanks!

Yeah the 110 will work. I do have 110V plug in a perfect spot, but you're right, it charges at about 3-4 miles per hour charge. Good to know the Blink stations I visit will be listed on my dash. Is that using the PlugShare map?

I spoke with the SC yesterday. They confirmed that production is complete and that the car is on the truck but then noted that the truck is still sitting at the factory and has been for a few days. Ugh... But it'll get here eventually.

JimmyAZ, what a great post! I read every one - you should go back and think about how you were feeling as it moved through the process . . . just for old times sake! :)

Was there anything you were overyly appreciative of at delivery?

Was there anything you wish were different or were disappointed in at delivery?

Thank you! This process was amazing; all the way down to the delivery appointment. One thing that I was really appreciative of was the conversation with service about the car. I have to assume the new owner is also new to EV, so they tell you what to expect with service and how they can help if you have a flat tire and such. They also were adamant about having me call them with ANY question that I had about the car. They wanted to be my first contact above all. I've never had that with any service department except BMW, which was only because he was a car nut like me so we'd talk all the time.

Although I didn't sleep in the car last night, I'm pretty sure I was driving in my dreams.

So apparently, per my DS, my car just got put on the train. It hasn't even left California yet :( 10 days in production, and now 8 days in transit, and it's still on the west coast. Harrumph.

Gives me some hope that ours will leave along with yours. Ours left production last Friday and heading to Chicago (Villa Park Facility). Would imagine same train head through Chicago on way to Cleveland.
  • May 13, 2015
    brickfrenzy
This sucks. My DS just told me that he doesn't think the car's going to make it to Cleveland by this weekend. 10 days in production, and now 2 weeks+ in transit - probably over 3 weeks in transit by the time it gets to me. :( People are getting their cars 5-6 weeks after ordering, and I won't get mine for TEN.

Edit: The train is currently in a switching yard outside of Kansas City. It's getting closer...
  • May 13, 2015
    JimmyAZ
That's a bummer! Did you ever find out why it needed more time in production? I assume that now it's at the mercy of the train schedule, right?
  • May 13, 2015
    Cyclone
This is why I ended up deciding to pick up my CPO rather than have it trucked down. They estimated it would take two weeks to get to me, it wouldn't load up that week, and then there are reports of delays in transport. In the end, I fly up in 22 hours and pick up the car at the two week point. Saving a few hundred on transport (CPOs are variable shipping cost based on distance) was icing on the cake of getting the car sooner. I hope your car heads over from Kansas City quickly brickfrenzy!
  • May 13, 2015
    brickfrenzy
I never asked why the car was delayed in production. I'll probably never know. Odds are something failed in inspection so it had to go back through the production line. But yeah, now it waits for the train. There is a major automotive switching yard just outside of Cleveland (thanks to Ford's cargo van plant there) so I suspect it will end up there, then trucked over to the store.

Argh, I hate having to be patient. I suck at patience. I totally would've done what you did, Cyclone, had it been an option.
  • May 14, 2015
    brickfrenzy
Hey THX1139, you should be happy to know that our train has reached the BNSF Logistics auto unload center in suburban Chicago. I suspect your car is being unloaded (or has been already) and will be trucked up to your store today or tomorrow. Mine has another day on the train and will probably be unloaded for me in Cleveland this weekend. Getting closer!
  • May 15, 2015
    thx1139
As of 5:30PM yesterday ours was still at the BNSF logistics center. DS said could show up at service center later on yesterday or this morning. Spend 2 days waiting at the logistics center. Since the service center is open on weekends we will be taking delivery next week Monday or Tuesday.

Kinda bummed about it especially after my 17 year old basically totaled our trade in Wednesday evening ( a couple blocks from home ). I had just received the confirmation on the trade in value an hour before. Not a bad accident just a fender bender basically, but body damage on a Mercedes is so damn expensive. $8200 in damage when trade in value was $7000. We are caught in a conundrum. Do we claim the insurance (sons 2nd accident in a year) or eat it. We have been with State Farm since I was a kid. No claims ever until this son totaled 2 cars. A 2007 Camry and now a 2007 Mercedes.
  • May 15, 2015
    brickfrenzy
My DS just told me that he's pretty sure that Cleveland cars are unloaded in Chicago too, and trucked from there. So it looks like my trucked car and your trucked car are leaving the facility at roughly the same time. It's just that mine has a 5 hour longer drive to get to me.

Bummer on the accident. That's one of my big fears, that my current car gets wrecked before I sell it.
  • May 16, 2015
    thx1139
Still at the logistics center as of about 7PM last night. Now the earliest delivery is Tuesday. Grr. Why would they want it to stay at a train yard for 3+ days?
  • May 16, 2015
    Cyclone
Want might be a bit of a stretch. From stories I've heard in general about train shipments, it very well could be sitting for the right person to take an interest in moving that box car along. I would imagine Tesla would like for it to move as fast as possible too.

Don't claim it and make him work to pay back a substantial portion. You will get killed on insurance rates if you claim it. Either that or take him off insurance and say "you're on your own". My own son got broad-sided in my car back a couple years ago. Insurance didn't go up but does have a pretty heavy price for me to keep four people and four cars covered. May start to remove collision off the older cars to try to self insure a bit more. In my case, the car looked repairable but insurance totaled it and then my $1000 deductible got paid by the errant party's insurance. Not bad but still, that was a nice car at the time.
  • May 16, 2015
    thx1139
We ended up claiming it. The cash out for our car and the other car would have been about $10000. Yes the insurance rates will go up, but it will take a long time to make up that $10,000 (not to mention the opportunity costs). He is paying up and then some. We do keep the deductibles high. Our oldest car now is a 2012 Volt so still value to keep the collision on it.
  • May 17, 2015

Well, my DS says the car will make it to Cleveland tomorrow, with my delivery date confirmed for May 20th. So exactly 1 month from production start to delivery. Longer than I'd hoped, that's for sure.

Just an interesting note: I took my 85 to the service center this morning for some minor tweaks that were noticed on delivery. The loaner is a P85. I thought it would be just an incremental increase in power - WRONG!!

Holy detached retinas! This car is a crazy increase in power from the 85. And I haven't even BEEN in a P85D. All I can say is WOW. I'm loving where this car company is going. And I was positive I'd already drunk that Kool-Aid. Apparently there was some more in the glass because now I'm excited all over again at the range of Tesla cars from which we'll have a choice in the next few years. I am one HAPPY CAMPER.

As for my 85, I'm still deeply in love with it and am excited to take my first Supercharger trip from Phoenix to Flagstaff this weekend.

Thanks for this. I took a drive in an 85D last week and it was pretty awesome - awesome enough in fact that almost regretted ordering my P85D (which I might get this coming weekend). Happy to hear that an 85 driver feels the difference that is costing me an extra $20k . Also very happy to hear that you love your car - my wait is almost over.
  • May 18, 2015
    JimmyAZ
Yeah I still LOVE my car. And I'm surprised how many of my friends are in disbelief when I show them the power it has. The P85 is amazing, and I can't imagine what the P85D would be like. Super car performance for sure. Funny how now I'm thinking 3 years down the road at what I'll get when this lease is up. Haha.

Makes me wonder just how busy the store your delivery was going to is. That's the only thing I can think of as to why it's sat for so long - they don't have room at the store for it due to other deliveries ahead of you?

I think another DS answered it for me. They dont want to take cars car by car. They wait until they have a full car carrier before they take the cars to the service center.

But enough about ours. Did you take delivery today? Any nice swag?

Awesome! Let the permagrin begin. I had mine in for service to tweak some things on Monday and had a P85 loaner. It was FAST, but the old seats were not something I liked at all after having enjoyed the Recaro Next Gen ones. Talk about spoiled!

Christ on a pogo stick this car's acceleration is otherworldly. I'm coming out of a similarly powerful car (A Cadillac CTS-V Wagon), but the acceleration here is so hard and so instantaneous it feels like you're being teleported. No downshifting, no hesitation, just push the go pedal and end up somewhere else.

I did not get any extra swag, just the standard kit - hat, keychains, leather fob pouch. Though my DS and the store manager gave me a welcome gift with a few things they like (Dr. Pepper, Seattle's Best coffee, nutella and Mother's wheel and tire cleaner). It was a nice little gesture.

    Brickfrenzy,

Congratulations!!! I'm hoping to be about a week behind you. My 85D was as of this morning in New Mexico and is Cleveland bound. Thanks for keeping us up to date with your experience. The waiting doesn't seem to get any easier but good to know your delivery went well and you're happy with the car. I've only test driven an 85 so looking forward to the D!

Awesome so far. The acceleration (on an 85D) is still crazy. This evening we have are first road trip. Just a short one to pickup son from college in Madison Wisconsin. The Tessie is Badger red so will fit in just fine. So also our first SuperCharge as well before we head home tomorrow.

As for Swag, my wife and I got jackets, 3 t-shirts for our boys and a couple key chains. Unfortunately no metal coffee mugs.

Perfectly happy with the Standard Sound System. With the internet radio I was able to listen to New Order and the like on the way home yesterday and this AM for my Starbucks run some Bob Marley. Dont think I will miss XM radio.
