lolachampcar It seems like there were a slew of ViNs added to the spread sheet over the last week but now that has gone quite. Are they normally issued in batch? If they are, do you think we will see another batch by year's end?
Dec 22, 2012
lolachampcar I just checked timdorr's spread sheet and there are no new ViNs added. Has anyone gotten a ViN over the last few days?
Dec 22, 2012
Zythryn I know someone who got their VIN Friday morning. It was in the mid 3000's range.
Dec 22, 2012
adurstewitz According to Tim's spreadsheet mine is the last one from the previous batch (VIN 3062). I've not seen one higher and was told that they will not be giving out more VINs until 2013.
Dec 22, 2012
Discoducky Oh please let the next batch be 60kWh VIN's! I've only got 20 more days to lock in my financing with PenFed and I'm worried that rates will be going up in 2013.
Dec 22, 2012
Tempus This. Exactly this!
Dec 22, 2012
jhs_7645 Was anybody with a 60kWh given a delivery window? If they throw those of us who were given a delivery range of 12/15-12/31 back behind the next batch I'd be more than a bit ... um... surprised. A lot of us have gone through gymnastics to be ready for an end of the year delivery that has not materialized

Dec 22, 2012
timdorr To be fair, I've been slowing down my update rate for the spreadsheet. I've got a lot of stuff going on right now, so I'm not checking in every few hours like I used to. It may just be me being slow

clmazin I got 2600 on Wednesday. 85, non-sig.
Dec 23, 2012
lolachampcar If 3062 is the last ViN out for 2012, then I'm heading for a 2013 MY car. I hope the remainder of the 15-31st promise dates will get their cars in early January but I can simpathize with the low P numbered 60KW guys wanting their cars in the proper order.
Please post if anyone hears of a ViN coming out of Tesla before the end of the month as I would think that would indicate another batch release.
Dec 23, 2012

Dec 24, 2012
jvonbokel At this point I'm not really sure what to expect. I think they got themselves in a tough spot by inviting so many people to finalize. I know they wanted to keep the production line moving at top speed, but it sounds like they overshot, and now they have a good chunk of people like us (85kWh high res number), plus I can only imagine a good chunk of finalized 60kWh configs just waiting to go into production, many of which have substantially lower reservation numbers. How can they keep both sets of customers happy? I would say they should intermingle them, but I have no idea how they would figure out the sequencing in that case.
Personally, if I get pushed back to Feb/Mar, I think I'll understand. It'll be disappointing, for sure, but I don't feel like I can demand to be put ahead of 60kWh folks with reservations thousands ahead of me just because I went through some financial gymnastics to get ready in time for a potential Dec/Jan delivery. I'm sure not everyone would be as accepting of that though.
Dec 24, 2012
HFh That's all very reasonable of you; however, you went through the financial gymnastics BECAUSE they told you you'd have everything by Dec/Jan. I certainly went through a lot I wouldn't have gone through otherwise, and now I have a bank staring at me (metaphorically) waiting on a VIN with the clock a-ticking away. Sigh.
Dec 24, 2012
kinddog i am in pretty much the same situation as you, and my DS said that while they won't make the Dec 31 deadline, it should be early to mid January. we will NOT be thrown back just because we didn't get in before the 31st.
Dec 25, 2012
lolachampcar kinddog,
at least we get a MY13 ViN bonus unless you have already received your ViN. I wonder what they will do with MY12 ViNs that do not make it out the door in 2012?
Dec 25, 2012
aviators99 I believe they would have to change the Vin, unless it already completed production.
Dec 25, 2012
adurstewitz If you have a VIN, you are already in the BIW phase. So the VIN won't change.
Dec 26, 2012

Dec 26, 2012
silbenny I'm still waiting for my VIN and now don't want it until 2013 (given there's no chance that I'm getting it delivered this year). I'd be very angry if I get a 2012 car, but can't finish the process and be able to claim it on my 2012 taxes. If I'm taking delivery in 2013, I want a 2013 car.
Dec 27, 2012
MaturinNYC Pardon the newb question, but how do you learn if you've been assigned a vin# - via the website dashboard, an email, a call?
Dec 27, 2012
lolachampcar Assignment of a ViN triggers Tesla's ability to ask for payment.... Normally, a Delivery Specialist (DS) will get a hold of you quickly to let you know you have a ViN and to get you your Motor Vehicle Purchase Agreement (MVPA) at which time most have been paying for the car. It's a revenue marker for Tesla so they tend to be pro-active.
Dec 27, 2012
MaturinNYC Thanks - looks like they'll miss my 12/15 - 12/31 delivery date then, which does suck. I put down a Signature deposit in Oct. 2011, then switched that to a regular production in June, so the wait bites hard! Congrats to all who got theirs though - i'm sure eventually i'll be back to driving around electrically - i miss the MINI E experience!
Dec 27, 2012
mdh I am 2747... picking up at the factory this afternoon. 85KW, air suspension, black, leather, paint armor and standard audio. Both excited and nervous, regarding building quality, as they are clearly ramping production at year's end.
Thanks to all the members that have answered my questions along the way.
Dec 27, 2012
jvonbokel I got through to my DS today, and he assured me that missing the 12/31 deadline would not push me any further back. I'm now under the impression that anybody who was given a 12/15-12/31 delivery window will be at the front of the line going forward. My sense is that this means 60kWh battery packs won't begin production until mid/late January, after the 85kWh cars for those who opted for an attempted 2012 delivery have been completed.
If I were a reservation holder anywhere under 5000 and I had finalized my 60kWh config months ago, I'd be pretty annoyed by that, but hopefully all will be forgotten once their cars are delivered.

RedSoxDoc Hello everyone. My first post here and it is to announce that I just got my VIN (3233). My reservation number was #9,149. I'm not really sure how to make all the details of my car appear in the bottom of the window like everyone else so I'll just say it here. S Performance (85kW), Black with black interior and carbon fiber accents. Pano roof, tech and sound package, 21" grey wheels, jump seats. Original delivery window quoted was December 15-31. Emailed a few days ago and finally got a reply back from my delivery specialist. Said they didn't get it in within 2012 but it's currently being made and will be done in 1-2 weeks. I live in Pinehurst, NC for those of you making the spreadsheet. Happy to be a member of the Tesla family.

OK - so I called the main Tesla number right now and explained that we both have the exact same configuration and that I hadn't been notified yet. He looked up my status in the computer and I do have a VIN # !!!!
Since he's not a delivery specialist, he couldn't give it to me - but my car is in production and he is assigning me a DS and they will give me a call "early next week"?? I hope that means Monday!!!
Going to have my outdoor Nema 14-50 installed this friday! I hope our cars are on the same transport! I am opting for delivery at the White Plains Tesla Store - or - the service center which I was informed recently (at the store) would be opening January 1st instead of March!
My street to busy to deliver on, so thats why I'm opting for the store/service center - which should also help save a day in delivery!

Jcmason Aaron,
That's excellent news! It makes sense that they would try to send them on the same truck. The last I heard, mine should be on the truck this coming week. When I finalized the paperwork, it didn't give me the option of delivery at either the White Plains store or Service Center though, just the one in Queens, so I opted for home delivery. I'd have preferred to pick it up in White Plains too, if that had been an option. I'm glad to hear the Service Center is opening soon, that will be pretty convenient. Keep me posted, and I'll let you know as soon as I get more info too.
Cheers,
John

Jan 8, 2013
aaron.s loganss
I called the "Build My Model S" Hotline number that appeared on my Finalize paperwork/email I got: 888-771-2505
You press #2 during the voice prompt "Have Already Finalized". The person that answered the phone checked my status and when he saw I had a VIN, he said he would now be my DS. He emailed me my VIN and activated the Delivery button on the My Tesla page which I promptly went through. He also asked me to send him my License and current Insurance Card.
All went very smoothly!
Aaron
PS - the only major difference I see in your config vs. mine and jcmason is that you didn't get the Pano roof. The only other minor difference is the Piano Black interior and sound studio. Everything else is the same.
Jan 8, 2013
loganss Thanks Aaron. I called the number and my news isn't as good. I now seem to have a DS assigned to me but no VIN number yet. The wait continues for me. I think I'm still going to go ahead and play it safe and try and lock in some good financing rate within the next few days.

Jan 8, 2013
RLA12194 Does anyone have any ideas on the time from completing the Tesla paperwork and receiving the counter signature to VIN assignment and/or the appearance of the delivery button?
Jan 8, 2013
lolachampcar now there is a question. Some get ViNs within a few days while others signed up in early December and are still waiting on a ViN. Some may be longer as I am only speaking from my experience.
Jan 8, 2013
Jcmason Well, I ordered in May 2012 (#9096), got the invitation to finalize on Dec 4th, had my test drive on Dec 7th and finalized my configuration that same day. Then, I got the red Deliver button on Jan 2nd, signed the final MPVA that day and got my VIN too, received confirmation that everything was finalized (ie countersigned by Tesla) on Jan 4th, sent checks (personal and from PenFed) on Jan 5th, and also emailed a photo and the FedEx tracking number to my DS on Jan 5th. Latest I've heard from my DS earlier today was that the car has now "passed the factory gate", will spend 2 days in testing, one day waiting for a truck, 10-12 days crossing the country to the east coast, one day preparing for delivery at the local service center, which leads me to a delivery at home on or around Jan 22nd (hopefully!).
Good luck with yours. I'm trying to remember that the waiting is actually the fun part, just like waiting for Christmas when we were kids.
Jan 8, 2013
PattyChuck Then there is the other side of the coin. I placed my order in January 2012, finalized October 26th, counter-signed paperwork received on the 27th, and was invited to take part in the seemingly chaotic early December delivery extravaganza. Given a delivery window of Dec 15-31, but no VIN, and no DS. Finally was assigned a DS on Dec 17, but that info had to be pulled from Tesla. His communication was poor, because it took to December 28th for him to finally call me back and tell me there was no chance of a 2012 delivery, and that he could not give me a new delivery window. Waited until today to reach out, and was given a new delivery window of Jan 27 - Feb 10 (and still no VIN).
So, to answer your question another way, go to a casino and try to guess numbers on the roulette wheel. Sometimes you'll get lucky, and sometimes you won't.
Jan 8, 2013
Stoneymonster Thanks for the suggestion to call the delivery hotline number guys! I had heard nothing at all from Tesla (I declined the December delivery email). After calling I was hooked up with a DS and told my car was halfway done and had a VIN (3280, 2013 model)! Delivery window is now Jan 12-26. Sounds like they are having some communication fall through the cracks and folks need to prod them. I was reservation 6421.
Jan 9, 2013
lolachampcar PattyChuck,
The race is on!
At P8911 I'm behind you so I hope you get your ViN first but we are roughly in the same boat.
Jan 9, 2013
dave I also took your suggestion to call in last in night, and couldn't believe that my car was in the "last stages of production", had a VIN, and could be released to shipping on Friday as long as they got my money in time!!
I was expecting to get a little more notice from Tesla! In any case, I quickly mailed them the check this morning and am now cautiously optimistic that I may get my car this month!!
I'm a little disappointed that the paperwork indicates its a 2012 model. I was under the impression that Tesla wasn't doing model years, and even if they were, I'd be receiving a 2013. Concerned that the one year difference will equate into a loss of $$ when it comes time (hopefully not for a LONG time) to sell her.
P9389 VIN 3236.
Jan 9, 2013
brianman Perhaps in the December mail Tesla should have asked which model year people wanted. Seems people are unhappy on both sides of the model year result of their vehicle.
Jan 9, 2013
dave Why would someone want the older model year? I guess it's possible insurance may be slightly lower in a few years, but that would be because the book value is lower, which translates into your car being worth less!
Jan 9, 2013
jvonbokel You can't please all the people all the time... I'm getting a 2012 (hopefully next week), and I'm happy about it. I think if there's any price difference between a 2012 and a 2013 (assuming similar mileage), the 2012 will be more valuable due to scarcity (~3200 made). To each his (or her) own.

highedu My status is "The Tesla Factory is building your Model S" so I have sent a note to Tesla to see if they have a vin or if the vehicle has even entered production yet...lets see what they say, not sure how quickly after finalizing they actually get started. Seems like its all over the place, in some cases within a few days, in other cases many weeks or months.
Jan 29, 2013
RedSoxDoc Don't feel bad. My Tesla was delivered two weeks ago (VIN 3233) and when I go on the website it STILL says its in the factory being built. Keep calling the number every day to check the status. Even then it's not always perfectly accurate. They told me that mine should be on a truck in a day or two and then 7-15 days to get here (North Carolina). The next day the driver called and said he'd be here in two days. So it's not a perfect system and it seems like every day is a week when waiting for your car. Been there. The end is near!
