New Center Console notice email part 1

    Jonathan Scott
So I got my 2016 90D 2 days ago and absolutely love it but really wanted the center console so I ordered it, just got this email from TESLA about the new console which is going to be $1250! emailed them back saying that I wanted it however wanted to see if they could move on the price considering I just took delivery for a 2016 and such... will see what they say...

    Dear Tesla Customer,

Close communication between customers, service, and engineering enables us to proactively address concerns and fix issues. Customer feedback over the last three years has helped us innovate and continues to drive us towards accomplishing our mission of a sustainable transportation future.

Earlier this week we finalized a new front center console design for Model S. This update will become the new standard for all Model S builds. The integrated design, trimmed in black with chrome accents, features:
    • Covered storage with improved sliding cover and removable dividers for custom layout
    • Flip-up lid with rubber grips and a pass-through to allow installation of a phone dock kit (purchased separately)
    • Retractable rear cup holders that can accommodate up to two cups
    [?IMG]
The Model S Integrated Console will be made available for purchase through the Tesla Gear site and Service Center locations in the weeks to come. As a current order holder for the first generation Premium Front Console, we would like to offer you an exclusive reservation opportunity. If you wish to purchase the integrated console, this reservation will provide you priority delivery upon parts availability. The price for the new console will be $1250 USD. Shipping and installation are complimentary.

Curious how this goes for you. We took delivery of our 90D on Monday of this week and would've loved the option for the center console (or some where to put our phone for Wave navi!)

I'm a bit confused on how this works. How does the center console reach the rear? U less they completely redesigned the center armrest?

I think the tis why it's $1200. It's not just an inset now, it's a whole new center console/armrest/rear cupholder system.

Nice! Can you post picks of the read seat cupholders?

Between that new console included and the new standard wheels (so no need for Cyclones) , the current version of the Model S90D is $3700 less than what I paid in September. Sounds like you got a great deal. ;)

Right? I might need more information now though. If it replaces the entire center console and does not just sit on the top of the yacht floor and it has two cup holders I might be interested.

Just picked up a new 70 today, and came with new console (unexpected)

If there are rear seat cup holders, I can't find them! 4 cup holders up front though.

Check under the vents for the rear seats. Is there a panel that pops out to reveal retracting cupholders?

Perfect picture of what I was looking for. Thanks for the great pics.

Also noticed no iPhone charger as standard. I love the new design but I think I will take the extra $600.00 and get a Blackvue camera instead.

If the wife didn't want the center console I would keep it as yacht floor because that's where I stretch my legs out.

I too received the center console email as I had the original on order. From what I can understand (not verified) this new item is a total replacement of the center armrest which includes the front center console. Looks like they will remove the yacht floor area and the center armrests and replace the entire thing with the new one.

Also the old center console is now gone from the accessories online store. And the new optional docking station for the phones is not listed yet (nor is its price).

Clearly Tesla, this would have been (and is) good situation for you do perhaps a 3 minute video that shows the old center console and the attibributes of the newer design. Right now, I do not have enough information to make a good decision and will have to wait until a new Model S arrives on the East Coast with the new console. I am sure I am not alone in this regard. The email provides just enough data to paralyze my decision process... probably not an intended outcome.

Looks very nice, but at $1250 its too much for me to justify. As someone else said, the $650 price seemed a tad rich already. I've kind of gotten used to the open feeling anyway.

No rear popout cup holders or rear usb. You got it for free which is exactly how much the price of the S should go up for having this item so the future price increase better be for worthwhile items

$1,200? That is a bit extreme for not more than $100 of injection molded plastic and vinyl. Maybe we should charge more for our lighted rear applique:).

Price increases by automobile manufacturers are not necessarily tied to new standard equipment or options. Sometimes prices just go up. In fact, most ICE prices go up every year. There may be a small redesign or new option, but that isn't the reason for the increase.
  • Mar 26, 2016

I would have paid the 1250 for something with rear seat cup holders. I mean, come on, in the design process no one thought, "hey, here is an opportunity to really address a colossal screw up we made by not having rear seat cup holders."

As it stands now, im not seeing the value yet....
  • Mar 26, 2016
    supratachophobia
Yeah, upon re-reading that email, that is really disingenuous on their part. Two retractable rear seat cup holders clearly implies that the rear seats can easily access them and that they are in addition to the other cup holders already in the car.

Considering that the old $650 center console has been available for 2 years now, anyone who has wanted one has had plenty of opportunity to get one. Moreover, it sounds like all new deliveries are coming with the new version as a standard item. That's actually more like a price decrease. The only ones who are negatively impacted by this price increase are those who recently received their cars before the new version became standard and did not order the older version before it became unavailable.
  • Mar 26, 2016
    Sir Guacamolaf
I don't feel so bad for paying $650 for the older console now. The new one isn't 2x the price better than the old one IMO.
Of course, the folks who are getting a complimentary included center console are the lucky ones - but end of this month prices are going to go up anyway. This week might just be the best week to order a new Model S. You'll get all the upgrades, at the current price.

There's no way that the "Retractable rear cup" can mean anything other than rear seat cup holders. They couldn't have meant the two in in the storage bin as those are forward, not rear, of the armrest cupholders.

I really like my current factory Tesla center console but if this new one really has two rear cupholders, I might have to spring for it.

Anyone want to buy my piano black factory console for $650? It's in perfect condition. No scratches or wear of any kind.

Exactly what I was thinking when I pulled the trigger yesterday on a new Model S. And now the wait begins!

I suspect the cost is so high because it replaces the entire legacy center console/arm rest with one large integrated set up plus the installation. In the pictures provided (thanks for those, btw ;)) above I cannot see any seams and it appears they do not re-use the old armrests portion. Maybe? Just my speculation
  • Mar 27, 2016

I like my open yacht floor. If they offered a rear cup holder option only other than the current option that takes up the middle seat, I'd be in.
  • Mar 27, 2016
    Sir Guacamolaf
^^ @Chaz (because I can't figure out how to quote part of your message)

The prev. console was more or less the same as this console. The only difference I see is the lid that opens (closer to the back of the car). The charging area looks slightly different, but looks like the iPhone attachment will cost more.

The only reason it's $1250 is because people will pay $1250 for it. The previous center console was wildly popular. I thought it was overpriced at $650, the actual cost price of that could not have been more than $50. The cost price of this new console can't be more than $60. But y'know, Elon's gotta eat so whatever! Plus it's going towards a good cause, so I don't mind.

I think everyone may be missing something with respect to the missing retractable rear seat cup holders.

The letter sent to those new owners who had just taken delivery is describing a $1250 option that would be added to their car that was built without a center console. There is no reason to believe that the description of this item applies to the center console that is being provided at no charge right now to current deliveries. Yes, the letter states that the new model will "become the standard" but that doesn't mean the consoles showing up in cars are that final version of the console. There could have been an earlier version that did not include the retractable rear seat cup holders, and Tesla decided to move the inventory on those, before the price increase, to the customers that were getting the console essentially for free. Or the text of the letter could be playing a little fast and loose with the specifics, and the consoles added during production may never include the rear seat cup holders, while the $1250 version of the console does.

I'm going to give Tesla the benefit of the doubt on this one, and assume that the first person to pay $1250 for one of these consoles finds that it has the retractable rear seat cup holders.

I can see the advantages of the center console, but I really love my negative space. It just makes the car feel roomier and also is a nice poke at the idiocy of the transmission tunnel in ICE cars.

+1. Seems like transition state. We know Tesla has a retractable rear cup holder solution (Model X) that is likely compatible with Model S. And remember that right before autopilot hardware was released, there was a small subset of cars that had the new turn signal stalk but without autopilot. Most likely the rumored price increase will get the new center console and the X-style retractable rear cupholders.

Fair point from Andyw2100. If it does turn out this new option has rear cup-holders, I'll be the first in line. And as an added bonus, I'd like to keep the armrest they take out and modify it so that it can tastefully go in between the rear seats. Then I will have 8 cup-holders and we'll be closer to the 13 of the Toyota Tacoma.

OP has first dibs, but if for whatever reason it doesn't work out, we can make something happen. We will all have to figure out what the timeline will be first and if it really does have rear-cupholder or if that was a typo. And I wouldn't mind input on turning the existing console tower into a center armrest with cupholders for the back seats.

I posted this on the other thread. I cancelled my center console on Friday when I saw that there was a new one without the piano black. Only 2 hours later, I received this email. I called them today and reactivated the original order for the previous version. I am not willing to spend $1250 ($1362 with tax!!!) just to get a slightly better console.

First time post for me. I've ordered a 90D, it's arrived in Dallas and I plan to pick it up this weekend from Tulsa.

I received the e-mail from Tesla, so I wrote them back with several questions, and just received this reply:

    "Hi Brute,

Thank you for contacting Tesla Motors. Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, we do not have additional photos of the Model S Integrated Console to provide at this time. Unlike the Premium Front Console which was a drop-in unit that filled the void between the front seats, the new Integrated Console is an entirely new center assembly that will also replace the existing center armrest (your current leather trim and dcor from the center armrest will be reused). Additionally, the Integrated Console has an improved sliding cover and features retractable rear cup holders in the rear of the cover storage armrest which can be accessed by rear seat passengers. The Integrated Console will still retain the front passenger cup holders and storage dividers like the original Premium Front Console. The new integrated console will include a flip-up lid with rubber grips and a pass-through to allow the installation of a phone dock kit (purchased separately).

Tesla believes in rolling updates and making the best features available to customers as soon as they are available, rather than waiting to introduce them in a new production year. This is why a new, integrated console is now included in Model S vehicles, but to enable all of our customers to be able to have the integrated console, we offer it as an aftermarket accessory.

We hope this information helps. If you would like to proceed with the Integrated Console, your original Premium Front Console order will be refunded and payment for the Integrated Console will occur at your Service Center following the installation. If you would prefer to keep your existing order, we will process it as soon as possible and your Service Center will contact you to arrange the installation once it has been received.

The standard warranty for aftermarket accessories is one year.

We apologize that we are currently unable to provide timing estimates. Please let us know how you would like to proceed.

    Best,

    [Tesla Specialist name removed.]

Hello Brutewolf! Welcome to the community and congrats on your new Tesla. What a great first post contribution! This is what was suspected by a few people here and you just confirmed it. I now see why is costs so much. However, the net gain is still just a center console and rear cup holders.

    Please see my post here:

    New Center Console notice email

The description being sent out by Tesla is pretty clear that some version of the console is going to have those rear cup holders. The fact that the console pictured doesn't have them is in not something to draw conclusions from.

And as for the new version being "a BIG step up from the original" version, that really depends on your perspective, and your car's trim. If you had the piano black trim in your car, the older version actually was a nice match for your interior. The new version is lacking that piece of piano black, and instead the console is all the same material. This makes sense, and is a much better match for anyone with a carbon fiber, obeche matte, or obeche gloss interior. But the original console with its piano black piece looked very nice with piano black interiors.

I believe the only other improvement, aside from the rear cupholders, which you were not including, is that the sliding part supposedly slides a little more easily.

In exchange for that, people have to pay extra for the phone dock.

Put together, I really would not categorize this as a "BIG step up."
  • Mar 29, 2016

Picked up my 90D today. It came with the new center console which is pretty cool. I see no rear seat accessible cup holders anywhere.

Here's what I got - 2 USB ports in the usual spot, but no phone charging HW to be found. Oh wait, what this? 2 little bags in the front compartment under the cup holders....it's phone charging HW! I almost missed this, and I bet others have also.

Basically you get a little cable to plug into one of the USB Ports. This then runs under the lower plastic of the adjacent compartment and up into the 2nd provided piece, which is an iPhone dock. I haven't installed either, and honestly it almost seams like they forgot to install it. Maybe this was intentional, I don't know how easy or hard it will be until I try.
  • Mar 29, 2016
    Sir Guacamolaf
^^ What AndyW2100 said, with 1 more addition. Even if you had carbon fiber interior, you could easily sticker match the plastic portion (yeah I know, not real but not a biggie). Or just leave it as piano black for that little part. Not a biggie.

IMO $1250 for center console (what should be part of the car - and guess what, going forward it is) - is . .quite pricey. It was pricey at 650, at 1250 it's hmm .. well you could get a new laptop for that much .. or ipad pro .. new iphone with $left .. its a lot!

See this old thread I started:

Modifying the Tesla Center Console for phones in cases (Pictures Included)

It should help you connect the dock, which should be quite simple. I imagine the parts haven't changed much, if at all.

Hopefully you won't have to utilize the toothpick trick described in the thread above, and Tesla will have made the adjustment for that on their own.

Also note that in the past that cable was long enough to run to the 12V port, so if you didn't want to give up a USB port, or if you wanted to charge faster, you could get a low-profile 12V USB charger, and charge from there.

Meh. They're getting a perfectly good armrest assembly in exchange. $1250 seems a tad steep for a retrofit. Even at $175/hr for labor.

    And so it goes.

    Couple of thoughts:

    1) One of the coolest features of Tesla is they provide retro-fits of such options. My car has been retrofitted with LTE, scheduled for Ludicrous, numerous OTA updates, and I will likely get this console. Name another manufacturer that treats their customers investments with such upgrade flexibility? (i.e.: I buy a 2006 E class, the console is upgraded in 2007, my only option is to buy a new car...if I want it...etc

    2) if you look at it from this perspective, the optional $1250 cost is reasonable. If you like your open floor, you get to keep it at no cost.

Seems to be a fully integrated setup.... looking forward to seeing the retrofit version w/ the cup holders for the rear passengers.
  • Mar 30, 2016
    studiojon
I couldn't agree more. My old S85 was upgraded with folding mirrors and LTE. If I wanted to I could have done next Gen seats - and I would have done that if it weren't for autopilot.

No other car company has ever been so good about this. In my current 90D I will indeed do the new console when it's available. I will also most likely do the ventilated seats when they become available too. I have a friend with an older S who wants my next Gen seats when I do that deal so...... Revolutionary. Just like almost everything else about Tesla and the whole experience.

    No dice.

Unless it's like one of those bookshelves in movies where you have to press in just the right place to open the hidden door, there are no rear cupholders in this location.

Based upon the communications I have received, it is very likely that the new $1250 retrofit center console has features that the new "standard" center console does not have.

Excerpt from a Tesla Communication to me....

"Additionally, the New Integrated Console has an improved sliding cover and features retractable rear cup holders in the rear of the cover storage armrest which can be accessed by rear seat passengers. The New Integrated Console will still retain the front passenger cup holders and storage dividers like the original Premium Front Console. The new integrated console will also include a flip-up lid with rubber grips and a pass-through to allow the installation of a phone dock kit (purchased separately). The phone dock kit may be ordered through your Service Center."

I am quite interested in that flip-up lid. No word yet on the cost of the phone docking kit. I suspect this new integrated console will take some time to get into the field.... June or July perhaps on the East Coast?

this was asked in a previous thread, it sucks the air from the cabin. Either for temperature readings or just air recirculation etc.

It looks just like the old one, maybe with a few kinks worked out, the glossy top, etc. If that is the case I can't see it being worth double the price! Glad I got the old one at $650 which was high enough for something that should be a standard option IMHO.

Took delivery of my 90D today. It had the center console (unexpected). It entered production on March 15, I think it's a good standard feature.

I picked mine up on Saturday. It went into production March 12. No center console.

The new retrofit console still isn't available, as far as I can find out.

Yes, you are right. I have been waiting patiently. Last time I visited my local SC they told me they have not yet received a single one to install yet. Anyone else waiting for the new center console retrofit?

I am. I've already had three vultures, errr, I mean owners, want to purchase my version 1.0 center console.

The disquieting aspect of the new center console is this.... it has not yet been advertised in TESLA GEAR website as for sale, and as you are aware, the "old" center console was promptly removed from the website. (just the rear console remains for order).

The email (as I recall) said the new console would shortly be advertised in the Tesla Gear accessories website. Until it shows up there, we are for sure going to be on pins and needles. I am hoping on June or July.... we are, after all, dealing with Tesla Time.... which is not based upon a 24 hour day.... something a bit longer...

Very interesting reading this thread about a "NEW" console. Almost 3 years ago I contacted Tesla to order a front center console with Lacewood, and was told I would be put on the list and that they would contact me shortly when it became available. Now, over 2 1/2 years later....not a peep! I wonder if the wait will be the same for the new console........

I received notification today from my local SC that the new and improved center console (to replace the optional center console that I purchased thru Tesla's online store) has arrived and requested that I schedule its installation. Due to complications my schedule, installation will have to until early June.

WOW that is great news! Thanks for the update RandyR! And as one of the first to get the new console, can we hope for pictures when done? Please?

That is a long wait. Which service center is this? I wonder if someone else could request to see it and take a few pictures.

Next available installation appointment was May 27, however that didn't fit my schedule. I'm using the Dublin CA SC...

Are you going to ask to retain all the old deck and console parts? Just wondering.
  • May 11, 2016
    artsci
Absolutetly. It's more more than $100 worth of infection molded plastic and other cheap stuff. The margin on it has to be close to $1000. Tesla may not want to make money on service but that sure has hell doen't apply to parts.

    ARE THERE REAR CUP HOLDERS???
  • May 12, 2016
    ArtInCT
Please read the first post in this thread. The email from Tesla that many of us received indicated that there would be
"Retractable Rear Cup Holders" in the new center console. We have not seen this yet but we expect it to be much like
the Model X center console and not the newer Model S standard console.

Yup we all need confirmation.... I just emailed my orders contact to ask when I can expect the new console to ship to my Milford, CT Service Center.... I will report back when I hear something. Also there is an additional item, the iPhone charger port that has to be installed as well.
I guess we just have to be patient...

I got called to schedule the install of my old center console. Well she just said my center console has arrived for install. Maybe with the similar timing I will get the new one at no extra cost.

Probably not but one can wish.

Ok, got some info from Tesla Motors Online Orders here goes .... the "old" $600 center console option which was order able from Tesla Gear has just recently come back into stock for remainder of existing orders, and the "old" center console is shipping out to Service Centers for install. Thus, if you did not cancel your "old" center console and replace it with the "new" console you will be getting the call. BTW, if you did cancel the old center console you would have received a $600 refund to your credit card in Mid-April.

Now, In addition, I was told that the "new" $1200+ center console will begin shipping once supplies of it are available. At present it is not available for shipment yet.

So, if you recently received a call from your Service Center, that call is very probably for the installation of the "old" $600 drop in center console.

I am passing this information along, it comes from a person in Telsa Online Orders... I cannot vouch for that person's expertise in this matter.

I cancelled my order for the "old" center console and received my $600 credit, as a response to the email telling me that I can upgrade to the "new" center console. I received an email on Tuesday May 10 from the local SC telling me that my Center Console has been shipped to them and to schedule an appointment for installation. All indications to me is that this is for the "new" center console. Again, installation is scheduled for June 7th. I will post photos. I will also keep all of the old/removed parts, just because I like keeping old parts...

    Randy:
I really hope that you are getting the "new" center console. You may want to check with your Service Center to insure that fact. Also, did they discuss the optional phone recharging hardware (if it is the new center console)? As I understand it that item is not a part of the $1200 fee. Can't wait to see the photos. PS, out cars are essentially "twins" from the appearance perspective. Lastly, What is an HOV sticker?

PS: I will want to keep the old parts/pieces too. Good move.

HOV stands for California "High Occupancy Vehicle", though clean energy vehicle qualify for them. It allows us to use the carpool lane even when driving solo.
  • May 14, 2016
    ArtInCT
Great, we have just a few carpool lanes here in CT on interstates, you just need 2 or more passengers in your car to use them. No sticker is required. Sadly, we have virtually NO clean energy vehicle policies in place at this time that I am aware of in order to use those lanes.

I officially have console jealousy syndrom; CJS.

I have the old console installed as of last year, they added it at the service center. The new integrated one looks so much better. In my experience, the old one 1) moves a bit much on the side, 2) looks more temporary, 3) has the bright white stitching that matches nothing else in the car, 4) the piano black is very scratched up easily/subpar, and 5) the flipping part is starting to rub on sides which have shifted and not open all the way without a manual push - bit annoying

New one looks much more solid and would have been probably worth the $600 that the old was...
